- Abstract
This book will help cognitive behavioral psychotherapists adopt a transdiagnostic approach in their practice. In recent years, a new approach in psychotherapy has been arguing for a move from a focus on specific diagnoses to a transdiagnostic approach that targets psychological mechanisms and processes common to different mental health conditions in order to develop more personalized treatments. This book shows how to adopt a transdiagnostic approach using different third wave cognitive behavioral therapy protocols, such as: Functional Analytic Psychotherapy, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Trial-Based Cognitive Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Metacognitive Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, Process-Based Therapy and the Unified Protocol. “The mental health care field is undergoing rapid changes toward transdiagnostic and personalized methods. In line with this development is this superb text. In her book, Dr. Ana Ornelas developed an outstanding book that every student and professional clinician should read. It presents the main protocols of CBT in a single volume by conceptualizing the client in their uniqueness. I highly recommend this text”. - Prof. Dr. Stefan G. Hofmann, Alexander von Humboldt Professor of Clinical Psychology, University of Marburg, Germany. “Until recently cognitive behavioral therapy has been tailored for individual DSM disorders resulting in numerous treatment protocols. But advances in identifying mechanisms of action of these therapies has led to single interventions that are effective across broad classes of disorders such that they are called'transdiagnostic'. In this groundbreaking book leading approaches qualifying as transdiagnostic are described and presented in a way that will be very useful to clinicians in their practice and in their training”. - Prof. Dr. David H. Barlow, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry Emeritus, Boston University, USA. Founder of the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University. Some information in this book was originally written in Portuguese and translated into English with the help of artificial intelligence. Subsequent human revisions were done primarily in terms of content.

- Abstract
This book offers an accessible guide to the role that Zen has played and, alongside Buddhism, might play in both Eastern and Western attempts to alleviate mental suffering. Since its beginnings 2500 years ago, the central belief of Buddhism has been that what we perceive as “reality” is a mental representation; a religious belief which has since been substantiated by the evidence of neuroscience. The work and progress of clinical medicine, psychiatry and psychology have attempted to alleviate the sufferings of life, but the current approaches to mental health in psychiatry, the neurosciences and cognitivism don't fully address the complexity and mutual inter-relationship of the variety of factors involved in mental suffering, and its non-linear and chaotic aspects. Zen Buddhism, on the other hand, encourages access to reality, and so this book will explore, scientifically, the ways in which it's guiding principles can be deployed to support and enhance Western, clinical solutions to mental strife.

- Abstract
This book presents the Evolutionary Case Formulation model, a new proposal of case formulation protocol developed with the aim of providing psychotherapists with a common language to identify and treat psychological problems of varying complexity. This new case formulation model was developed based on the analysis of textual data in complete psychotherapeutic processes which led to the identification of different dimensions of intersubjective meaning elaboration that are a product of our evolution as a species. The Evolutionary Case Formulation model is based on a system of first and second order intersubjective knowledge domains. The first order knowledge domain is the Self System, which is ubiquitous in the processing of information and creation of individual meaning in a cultural intersubjective matrix. The second order knowledge domains are the different dimensions of intersubjective meaning elaboration: Cognition, Emotion, Interpersonal, Imagination, Corporeality, Sexuality and Religiosity/Spirituality. This system provides psychotherapists with a new conceptual framework to work with patients in the different stages of the psychotherapeutic process, from assessment to treatment planning and implementation. The book Evolutionary Case Formulation: Developing a Unified Language for the Practice of Psychotherapy, that the reader has in their hands, was first published in Spanish in 2021. This English edition is a fully revised and updated version of the original Spanish edition. More specifically, the case formulation protocol presents a series of innovations that are not present in the Spanish edition. In other words, it is a protocol that includes numerous clarifications in the intersubjective knowledge domains, making this book different. The original manuscript of this book was written in Spanish and translated into English with the help of artificial intelligence. The author (with the friendly support of a bilingual psychotherapist) has subsequently revised the text further in an endeavor to refine the work stylistically.

- Abstract
This text is specifically designed to meet the needs of those teaching and learning interviewing and diagnostic skills in clinical, counselling, and school psychology, counselor education, licensed clinical social workers, and other programs preparing mental health professionals. It offers a rich array of practical, hands-on, class- and workshop-tested role-playing and didactic exercises. The profiles included throughout provide students/trainees with a wealth of information about each client's feelings, thoughts, actions, and relationship patterns on which to draw as they proceed through the different phases of the initial interview, one playing the client and one the interviewer. Each client profile is followed by exercises thathighlight attending, asking open and closed questions, engaging in reflective listening, responding to nonverbal behavior, making empathetic comments, summarizing, redirecting, supportively confronting, and commenting on process. This second edition is based on the new diagnostic system (DSM-5-TR) and all profiles and case examples are updated. Throughout, the author emphasizes the importance of understanding diversity and respecting the client's perceptions, and of reflecting on the ways in which the interviewer's own identity influences both the process of interviewing and that of diagnosis. This text is essential for both students and practitioners of clinical psychology, counselling, psychiatry, nursing, social work, and other allied professions.

- Abstract

- Abstract
With a Foreword by Nancy McWilliams The purpose of Meaning-Fullness: Developmental Psychotherapy and the Pursuit of Mental Health is to show why current mental health practices are falling short in the ever-growing need for effective responses to the epidemic of mental unwellness. Jan Resnick begins by taking a critical look at psychiatry and psychology, especially the misuse and corruption of research that undergirds these practices. He goes on to offer an alternative perspective, understanding, and approach to issues of mental disorders. Resnik focuses upon the existential vacuum, a term originating in Viktor Frankl's classic text Man's Search for Meaning, which refers to feelings of emptiness, purposelessness, and meaninglessness. Feelings that are increasingly prevalent in our contemporary world. The existential vacuum points to a domain of experience not well described by the DSM or treated with a bio-medical approach. A radically different therapeutic approach emerges through elaborating Winnicott's ideas in Playing and Reality, his last published work. Resnick shows how the capacity for meaning-making originates in early childhood development, and how this understanding can be applied to adult experience, thereby making psychotherapy a developmental process. Developmental psychotherapy aims to cultivate a greater capacity for play, creativity, relationship, and meaningful living. In addition, therapy must work toward relief of mental suffering, recovery from trauma, and mitigation, if not resolution, of psychological disorders. The theory is richly supported with clinical examples throughout the book, culminating in a long case study that integrates the ideas with clinical practice, which forms the final part of the book. Dr Jan Resnick has created a must-read work for mental health practitioners the world over. His easy-to-read prose makes it accessible and of value to anyone concerned with issues of mental health and well-being, personal development and creating a meaning-full way of living.

- Abstract

- Subjects

- Abstract
This book makes the unorthodox claim that there is no such thing as mental health. It also deglamourises nature-based psychotherapies, deconstructs therapeutic landscapes and redefines mental health and wellbeing as an ecological process distributed in the environment – rather than a psychological manifestation trapped within the mind of a human subject. Traditional and contemporary philosophies are merged with new science of the mind as each chapter progressively examples a posthuman account of mental health as physically dispersed amongst things – emoji, photos, tattoos, graffiti, cities, mountains – in this precarious time labelled the Anthropocene. Utilising experimental walks, play scripts and creative research techniques, this book disrupts traditional notions of the subjective self, resulting in an Extended Body Hypothesis – a pathway for alternative narratives of human-environment relations to flourish more ethically. This transdisciplinary inquiry will appeal to anyone interested in non-classificatory accounts of mental health, particularly concerning areas of social and environmental equity – post-nature.

- Abstract
Cognitive Analytic Therapy and the Politics of Mental Health provides an overview of the development of cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), and illuminates how the political context affects the way in which therapists consider their work and facilitates their practice. This book examines how CAT contributes to wider debates over ‘the politics of mental health'. With contributions from those working in services – including adult mental health, learning disabilities and child and adolescent therapists – the writers consider how contemporary politics devolves responsibility for mental illness onto those suffering distress. The evolving political and social attitudes clients bring to therapy are also addressed in several chapters, and there is a focus on groups in society who have been marginalized and neglected in mental and physical health services.Cognitive Analytic Therapy and the Politics of Mental Health offers a fresh understanding of the contemporary politics of mental health that will be of interest to all therapists and mental health professionals.

- Abstract
In this groundbreaking book, author Clara Hill analyzes various theoretical approaches to MIL, and provides clear, practical guidance on how to incorporate MIL as a construct and focus in therapy. We all struggle to process our experiences, achievements, and failures within the context of a meaningful life. Knowing how to discuss meaning, and how to help patients find it, is a vital tool for all mental health practitioners. The concept of meaning-in-life (MIL) can help clients come to understand their lives as filled with significance and purpose. Hill weighs decades of research on MIL against her own recent work at the University of Maryland, distinguishing MIL research from other similar constructs and discussing the various sources of meaning that we all can find and apply in our daily lives. With strong case examples and hands-on reflection activities, Hill shows how therapists of all orientations can apply MIL in their practice.

- Abstract
Psychological Problems And Their Big Deceptions reveals the multiple fraudulent and deceptive concepts of both Psychology and Psychiatry, such as the present-day gross misuse of the'PTSD'diagnosis, while introducing the foremost, but previously unrecognized, concept, the'Unconscious Entity.'Though all people do not have a mental illness, everyone, without exception, has periods of being emotionally uncomfortable. This book convincingly shows what causes a state of being emotionally uncomfortable to any degree, and what is necessary to regain a state of being emotionally comfortable. In doing this, one will conclude it is a lot less the psychological counsel, in someone seeking professional help, and much more the listening, in any'counseling,'that makes the cure. This book explores, in detail, a dimension of human communication Psychology and Psychiatry have yet to fully appreciate, that has an immense capacity to make a person more emotionally comfortable, as well as an equally immense capacity to keep a person emotionally comfortable. That dimension is prevalent in any on-going small talk, and is mutually utilized, to the same degree, by the participants of that talking.

WBT is an innovative strategy that is based on monitoring psychological well-being, whereby the patient progressively learns how to make it grow. This type of therapy has enjoyed much success and is increasing in popularity around the world. The first part of this long-awaited book describes how the idea for WBT was formed, the first patient treated, and the current evidence that supports this approach. In Part II, Giovanni Fava provides the treatment manual of WBT, describing what each session entails, and includes many examples from his own cases. The last part covers some of the specific conditions for which WBT can be used and how sessions can be conducted. It includes sections on depression, mood swings, generalized anxiety disorder, panic and agoraphobia, and posttraumatic stress disorder. There is also information on the application of WBT in interventions in school settings. Throughout the book, Dr. Fava keeps things interesting by peppering his narrative with anecdotes from his medical career. The primary audience for this book is professionals within psychology, psychiatry, and other fields of medicine (e.g., family practice, pediatrics, and rehabilitation). However, the book is written in a relaxed, clear, and accessible style that also makes it of interest to counselors, educators, and family and friends of patients, not to mention patients themselves.

- Abstract
Psychosocial problems appear within a medical context worldwide, and are a major burden to health. Psychosomatic Medicine: An International Primer for the Primary Care Setting takes a uniquely global approach in laying the foundations of bio psychosocial basic care (such as recognizing psychosocial and psychosomatic problems, basic counseling and collaboration with mental health specialists) and provides relevant information about the most common mental and psychosomatic problems and disorders. The scope of the book is intercultural—it addresses global cultures, subcultures living in a single country and strengthening the care given by physicians working abroad. This clinically useful book outlines best practices for diagnosing the most common bio psychosocial problems and mastering the most common communication challenges (e.g. doctor-patient conversation, breaking bad news, dealing with difficult patients, family and health systems communication and collaboration). Every chapter integrates basic theoretical background and practical skills and includes trans-culturally sensitive material, important for work with patients from different cultures. Psychosomatic Medicine: An International Primer for the Primary Care Setting serves as an excellent resource for clinicians hoping to gain and develop knowledge and skills in psychosomatic medicine.

- Abstract
At the time of this writing, there is much uncertainty about the form of this country's future healthcare system and the role of psychiatry and other mental health disciplines in that system. Current experience with various managed healthcare programs is not encouraging. Most often patients with severe psychiatrie disturbances receive, at best, so me form of crisis intervention or brief treatment. Marital and family approaches to treatment receive even less support. This discouraging socioeconomic context makes the work of John Schwab and his colleagues even more important than it would be in more favorable times. Their message is clear: The family is crucial to an understanding of psychiatrie disorders and must often be the major focus in the treatment of these disorders. This book is unique in its direct reflection of the senior author's long-term professional interests-the family, epidemiology, and history. A careful reading provides family therapists and researchers with won derful opportunities to examine the ways in which history, socio economie and politieal contexts, and epidemiology can be used to in crease understanding of the family. This his tory of the family is unusually thorough; in particular, I found fascinating the information about early Egyptian families (3000 B.C.) and their accordance of high status of women.

- Abstract
How does a person experience emotions? What is the relationship between the experiential and biological dimensions of emotions? How do emotions figure in a person's relation to the world and to other people? How do emotions feature in human vulnerability to mental illness? Do they play a significant role in the fragile balance between mental health and illness? If emotions are in fact significant, how are they relevant for treatment? Emotions and personhood are important notions within the field of mental health care. What they are, and how they are related though, is less evident. This book provides a framework for understanding this relationship. The authors argue for an account of emotions and personhood that attempts to understand human emotions from the combined approach of philosophy and psychopathology, taking its models particularly from hermeneutical phenomenology and from dialectical psychopathology. Within the book, the authors develop a basic set of concepts for understanding what emotional experience means for a human person, with the assumption that human emotional experience is fragile - a fact which entails vulnerability to mental disturbance. Drawing on research from psychiatry, psychopathology, philosophy, and neuroscience, the book will be valuable for both students and researchers in these disciplines, and more broadly, within the field of mental health.

- Abstract
This book provides a new generation of research in which scholars are investigating mental health and human development as not merely the absence of illness or dysfunction, but also the presence of subjective well-being. Subjective well-being is a fundamental facet of the quality of life. The quality of an individual's life can be assessed externally and objectively or internally and subjectively. From an objective standpoint, other people measure and judge another's life according to criteria such as wealth or income, educational attainment, occupational prestige, and health status or longevity. Nations, communities, or individuals who are wealthier, have more education, and live longer are considered to have higher quality of life or personal well-being. The subjective standpoint emerged during the 1950s as an important alternative to the objective approach to measuring individual's well-being. Subjectively, individuals evaluate their own lives as evaluations made, in theory, after reviewing, summing, and weighing the substance of their lives in social context. Research has clearly shown that measures of subjective well-being, which are conceptualized as indicators of mental health (or ‘mental well-being'), are factorially distinct from but correlated with measures of symptoms of common mental disorders such as depression. Despite countless proclamations that health is not merely the absence of illness, there had been little or no empirical research to verify this assumption. Research now supports the hypothesis that health is not merely the absence of illness, it is also the presence of higher levels of subjective well-being.In turn, there is growing recognition of the personal and social utility of subjective well-being, both higher levels of hedonic and eudaimonic wellbeing. Increased subjective well-being has been linked with higher personal and social ‘goods': higher business profits, more worker productivity, greateremployee retention; increased protection against mortality; increased protection against the onset and increase of physical disability with aging; improved cognitive and immune system functioning; and increased levels of social capital such as civic responsibility, generativity, community involvement and volunteering. This edited volume brings together for the first time the growing scientific literature on positive mental health that is now being conducted in many countries other than the USA and provides students and scholars with an invaluable source for teaching and for generating new ideas for furthering this important line of research.

- Abstract
Social workers, in whatever capacity they work, can expect to come into contact with women who have experienced/are experiencing violence and with women who are experiencing depression. Therefore, a range of social work supports and interventions are required in order to meet the needs of diverse women and assist them in their recovery. One of these methods is group work where women can share their experiences, learn from each other, reflect on their learnings and identify and achieve changes in their circumstances. This book is based on original research by the author that sought to understand depression in women from a feminist and gender-informed perspective, develop a feminist-based group work response, and highlight the activities of consciousness-raising and resistance as methods for women to achieve change in their lives and in their selves. An innovative and creative group work program, the Women's Journaling Group Program, was developed from this research and provides a new method of working with women who have experienced/are experiencing violence and mild-moderate depression. The Women's Journaling Group Program is research-informed, theoretically-grounded, practice-based and feminist and gender-focused. This book, and the program model within it, is an important contribution to the field of critical feminist social work practice.

- Abstract
Resilience is a topic that is currently receiving increased attention. In general, resilience refers to the capacity of those who, even under the most stressful circumstances, are able to cope, to rebound, and to go on and thrive. Resilient families are able to regain their balance following crises that arise as a function of either nature or nurture, and to continue to encourage and support their members as they deal with the necessary requirements for accommodation, adaptation and, ultimately, healthy survival. Handbook of Family Resilience provides a broad body of knowledge regarding the traits and patterns found to characterize resilient individuals and well-functioning families, including those with diverse structures, various ethnic backgrounds and a variety of non-traditional forms. This Handbook brings together a variety of perspectives aimed at understanding and helping to facilitate resilience in families relative to a full range of challenges.

- Abstract
In this book James Davies considers emotional suffering as part and parcel of what it means to live and develop as a human being, rather than as a mental health problem requiring only psychiatric, antidepressant or cognitive treatment. This book therefore offers a new perspective on emotional discontent and discusses how we can engage with it clinically, personally and socially to uncover its productive value. The Importance of Suffering explores a relational theory of understanding emotional suffering suggesting that suffering, does not spring from one dimension of our lives, but is often the outcome of how we relate to the world internally – in terms of our personal biology, habits and values, and externally – in terms of our society, culture and the world around us. Davies suggests that suffering is a healthy call-to-change and shouldn't be chemically anesthetised or avoided. The book challenges conventional thinking by arguing that if we understand and manage suffering more holistically, it can facilitate individual and social transformation in powerful and surprising ways. The Importance of Suffering offers new ways to think about, and therefore understand suffering. It will appeal to anyone who works with suffering in a professional context including professionals, trainees and academics in the fields of counselling, psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, psychiatry and clinical psychology.

- Abstract
The importance of mental health counseling has grown, including the array of mental health issues that arise in an uncertain and fragile world. It has been 25 years since the original edition of Foundations of Mental Health Counseling was published. This fourth edition expands the information in the previous editions by updating the positive changes in the field of mental health counseling including the recognition of licensed professional counselors by managed care organizations and insurance companies. There are twelve new authors that have added tremendously to the depth and breadth of the book and which offer chapters that include both practical as well as theoretical ideas and information. Presented in six sections, Section I is an overview that covers a historical perspective from which an assertive and articulate voice for the identity and advancement of mental health counseling has emerged. Section II covers the role of theory and the integration of these theories in the practice of mental health counseling, including mental health and aging, multiculturalism and diversity, career counseling, and the use of humor in counseling sessions. Section III details the expanding employment opportunities, work settings, and private practice. The issues of substance abuse and the effective counselor and intimate partner violence is addressed. Section IV presents the counselor's role in recovery and trauma counseling treatment regarding terrorism. Section V explores the licensure, credentialing, and legislation related to mental health counseling, its impact, and the counselor as a political activist. Section VI addresses assessment, research, ethics, curriculum, and trends of mental health counseling. Additionally, there are two very important segments that reflect the changing times for counselors. First, the role of counselors in dealing with disasters and terrorism, and second, the place of technology within the counselor's world and some of the issues that will be faced in coming to terms with technology in the twenty-first century. This book continues to be the most up-to-date resource in the field of mental health counseling and is a “must read” for anyone working or aspiring to work as a mental health counselor.

Alessandra Lemma - Winner of the Levy-Goldfarb Award for Child Psychoanalysis! The contemporary relevance of psychoanalysis is being increasingly questioned; Off the Couch challenges this view, demonstrating that psychoanalytic thinking and its applications are both innovative and relevant, in particular to the management and treatment of more disturbed and difficult to engage patient groups. Chapters address: clinical applications in diverse settings across the age range the relevance of psychoanalytic thinking to the practice of CBT, psychosomatics and general psychiatry the contribution of psychoanalytic thinking to mental health policy and the politics of conflict and mediation. This book suggests that psychoanalysis has a vital position within the public health sector and discusses how it can be better utilised in the treatment of a range of mental health problems. It also highlights the role of empirical research in providing a robust evidence base.Off the Couch will be essential reading for those practicing in the field of mental health and will also be useful for anyone involved in the development of mental health and public policies. - Abstract
In this volume, Elena Garralda and Jean-Philippe Raynaud aim to contribute to advancing awareness of child and adolescent mental health within an international framework that gives special consideration to problems arising in different contexts around the world and through expert views supported by empirical evidence and considering clinical implications. There is increasing recognition worldwide of the importance of child and adolescent mental health problems, of the distress and impairment they can cause to children and their families, and of the markedly adverse effects on education and on adult psychiatric adjustment when left untreated. Globally, however, services to attend to these problems in children are uneven and patchy. There is a need to advance awareness of child and adolescent mental health and of factors that influence them. Chapters address the effects on child mental health of issues ranging from secular changes in family composition in both western and eastern countries, rapid industrialization, poverty, deprivation, and adoption, to refugee status and aboriginal life. It considers emerging issues, such as cyber addiction, PTSD, ADHD across different cultures, and the autistic'epidemic.'They discuss new service developments (Eastern Europe, paediatric liaison services) in the context of traditional methods (traditional Chinese medicine).

These are some of the issues addressed by the Kardeners in Breaking Free: How Chains From Childhood Keep Us From What We Want. Why do our best intentions so often go awry? What prompts people to engage in behaviors that have the opposite outcome from what they wished to have happened? What attracts us to our mates and then alienates us from them—only to find similar difficulties in subsequent relationships? How and why do we get in our own way of success? What contributes to distress within a person, between people, communities and nations?

- Abstract
Drawing on research from a variety of domains - clinical studies of trauma, developmental psychopathology, interpersonal psychobiology, epidemiology, and social policy - September 11: Trauma and Human Bonds addresses especially the fundamental relationship of human bonds to trauma and underscores the manner in which developments in all these fields are coming together in complementary ways that sustain a key finding: that trauma must be understood in its relational and attachment contexts. The quality of early emotional attachments, differences in attachment styles to family milieus, and the psychological qualities that enable traumatized parents to avoid traumatizing their children are among the topics through which these contexts are explored. From their various disciplinary vantage points, the contributions converge to show how human relationships can either provide an anodyne to trauma or serve as the vehicle of its transmission. As Susan Coates observes, a major legacy of 9/11 is the realization that'there are no simple truths in the world of trauma studies, no easy-to-remember anodynes or pharmacologic magic bullets or depth-psychological schematizations that will hold true for a majority or even a sizable minority of cases.'Yet, in delineating the multiple connections between human relations and trauma, and in elaborating these connections from multiple disciplinary perspectives, the contributors to September 11 have taken a decisive first step to consolidate new knowledge about trauma and to demonstrate how it can assist clinicians who encounter diverse responses to trauma in their day-to-day work. A sobering reminder of shared human vulnerability in the face of devastating events, September 11 is also a heartening reminder of resiliency in the face of overwhelming loss and of the healing potential of human connection.

- Abstract
Psychologists, says the old joke, know everything there is to know about the college sophomore and the white rat. But what about the rest of us, older than the former, bigger than the latter, with lives more labyrinthine than either? In this ambitious book, Karl E. Scheibe aims to take psychology out of its rut and bring it into contact with the complex lives that most people quietly live.Drama, Scheibe reminds us, is no more confined to the theater than religion is to the church or education to the schoolroom. Accordingly, he brings to his reflection on psychology the drama of literature, poetry, philosophy, history, music, and theater. The essence of drama is transformation: the transformation of the quotidian world into something that commands interest and stimulates conversation. It is this dramatic transformation that Scheibe seeks in psychology as he pursues a series of suggestive questions, such as: Why is boredom the central motivational issue of our time? Why are eating and sex the biological foundations of all human dramas? Why is indifference a natural condition, caring a dramatic achievement? Why is schizophrenia disappearing? Why does gambling have cosmic significance?Writing with elegance and passion, Scheibe asks us to take note of the self-representation, performance, and scripts of the drama that is our everyday life. In doing so, he challenges our dispirited senses and awakens psychology to a new realm of dramatic possibility.
