152. Good Feelings : Psychoanalytic Reflections on Positive Emotions and Attitudes

- Abstract
This tightly edited volume opens a new vista in psychoanalysis by focusing upon positive and life-enhancing emotions and attitudes. The realms it covers include love, friendship, enthusiasm, courage, tact, resilience, and forgiveness, among others. Seminal papers on these topics have existed but remain scattered throughout the psychoanalytic literature. This book brings them together in a harmonious gestalt. It is more than an anthology, however. Each paper is followed by a freshly written commentary that critically evaluates the paper and brings it in consonance with up-to-date, contemporary psychoanalytic knowledge. Issues of development, adaptation, psychopathology, and analytic technique, as these pertain to the positive dimension of affective experience, are elucidated. The book also deals with the broader and overarching issue of the'goodness'that accompanies, causes, and is enhanced by the positive emotions in consideration here. Thus the ever-elusive and puzzling issue of psychoanalytic morality finds a place in the discourse, with all its rich and complex theoretical and technical implications.

- Abstract
This book samples the groundbreaking work that has been developed over the last twenty-five years by psychoanalysts, writers and practitioners associated with the International Society for the Psychoanalytic Study of Organizations (ISPSO). What characterises this collection of original papers is an attempt to look at organizations, groups, teams and organizational role holders using psychoanalytic, systemic and psychodynamic perspectives that collectively eschew superficial, linear, prescriptive and mechanistic views of both the system and the individual within. These papers, delivered as presentations to the Society during the Annual Symposia of the ISPSO from its inception in 1983 to date, collectively form an important commentary on the changing societal dynamics and current preoccupations facing contemporary organizations, their leaders and their workforce. As such, these papers are representative of many that have contributed to, and documented, the development of the thought and praxis from a psychoanalytic perspective and systems thinking over the last quarter of century. Whilst most of these papers have already been published elsewhere, the ISPSO as an organization wished to include them in this volume, recognising their lasting influence and legacy as well as their ongoing impact upon the thinking and the practice of its membership and beyond.

- Abstract
Mentalization is the capacity to perceive and interpret behavior in terms of intentional mental states, to imagine what others are thinking and feeling, and is a concept that has taken the psychological and psychoanalytic worlds by storm. This collection of papers, carefully edited by Fredric Busch, clarifies its import as an essential perspective for understanding the human psyche and interpersonal relationships. The book is divided into theoretical, research and clinical papers, reflecting how the investigators thoughtfully and purposefully pursued each of these goals. Those involved in identifying mentalization have also made consistent efforts to measure and research the concept. Thus, in addition to expanding the theoretical bases and implications of mentalization and identifying clinically useful applications, the authors describe research that scientifically grounds the concept. Mentalization addresses and expands upon a number of implications of mentalization. These include: What are the broader implications for mentalization with regard to social and evolutionary development? How does mentalization interdigitate with other psychoanalytic models? How is mentalization systematically assessed? What clinical correlates have been found? How do we understand variations in the capacity for mentalization, even within a given individual? What are the applications of mentalization in the clinical arena, including specific disorders? Readers of this volume will find their clinical work to be more productive and their view of the human psyche broadened.

- Abstract
This book comprises papers on the theory and practice of supervision, all written by experienced psychoanalytic psychotherapists and Jungian analytic psychotherapists. Important aspects of the supervisory relationship are covered, including papers on the supervisor's countertransference, supervising work with suicidal patients and the dynamics of racial difference in supervision, and group supervision and dynamics related to the supervisor's role in the assessment of trainees. The contributions in this book mainly began life as presentations to the BAP course on'Developing Supervision Skills', a space in which new thinking about supervision has been able to be developed by contributors and participants alike. The book also covers fundamentals to consider when beginning in supervisory practice, including ways of creating a secure frame for thinking to take place and some of the ethical attitudes needed within the supervisory relationship. Supervisory technique is considered in broad overview and in some very personal views, from two highly experienced supervisors and a supervisee who has keenly observed some different supervisory styles.

- Abstract
In Our Clients'Shoes conveniently assembles a number of important papers on the Therapeutic Assessment approach in one resource, explicating its history, theory, techniques, as well as its impact on clients and assessors. Author Stephen E. Finn incorporates pieces presented at various conferences over the past 13 years, in addition to previously unpublished work, with the intent to allow psychologists greater insight into their clients'perspectives.Arranged in three sections, the first set of papers describes the history and development of Therapeutic Assessment, including personal experiences of the author, which ultimately led him to focus on psychological assessment as a potential therapeutic intervention. The second section follows with a variety of essays to illustrate particular techniques of collaborative and Therapeutic Assessment. In this section, readers gain an understanding of how to integrate test findings, engage clients in discussing their experiences of a test, conduct assessment intervention sessions, and teach Therapeutic Assessment to graduate students. Finn concludes by drawing a link between Therapeutic Assessment and two major schools of psychotherapy: intersubjectivity theory and control-mastery theory. He also discusses how assessors grow and change as a result of practicing psychological assessment, and addresses practical matters such as when to apply the approach, how to bill for Therapeutic Assessment sessions, how to market Therapeutic Assessment, and where to find professional support for this kind of work.In Our Clients'Shoes is appropriate for all clinicians who wish to further impact the lives of their clients and enhance their own wisdom, compassion, and personal and professional development.

- Abstract
This Volume of Annals of Theoretical Psychology highlights the fact that the flourishing aftermath of both Freud's and Lacan's ideas still exist. This is done in different ways. Some papers focus on rereading core texts of Freud and Lacan. Others apply Freud's and Lacan's principles in a new and contemporaneous actuality. Others again, transform and develop some of the core principles in psychoanalysis, whereas others discuss the scientific principles that lie behind psychoanalysis. This book will be important for scholars interested in psychoanalysis in general. The readers should be both clinicians and others interested in psychoanalysis all over the world.

- Abstract
This volume contains new papers addressing a number of new and traditional issues pertaining to the roles of representations in visual perception.Among these issues is the one concerning the nature of the perceptual state itself – e. g. on the issue of whether the perceptual state, like its distal objects, is structured, for instance by possessing a spatial character. Other issues include those of whether at least aspects of the distal object are presented immediately to us visually, whether representation plays any (interesting) role in disjunctivist and naïve realist accounts of visual experience and the relationship among visual perception, attention and representation. The anthology includes a wide variety of positions on the subject of the roles of representations in visual perception, which would help to close the literature gap and will be of interest to scholars from all schools and trends of philosophy of mind.

- Abstract
This collection provides a primer to the process and promise of computational modeling for industrial-organizational psychologists. With contributions by global experts in the field, the book is designed to expand readers'appreciation for computational modeling via chapters focused on key modeling achievements in domains relevant to industrial-organizational psychology, including decision making in organizations, diversity and inclusion, learning and training, leadership, and teams. To move the use of computational modeling forward, the book includes specific how-to-chapters on two of the most commonly used modeling approaches: agent-based modeling and system dynamics modeling. It also gives guidance on how to evaluate these models qualitatively and quantitatively, and offers advice on how to read, review, and publish papers with computational models. The authors provide an extensive description of the myriad of values computational modeling can bring to the field, highlighting how they offer a more transparent, precise way to represent theories and can be simulated to offer a test of the internal consistency of a theory and allow for predictions. This is accompanied by an overview of the history of computational modeling as it relates to I-O psychology. Throughout, the authors reflect on computational modeling's journey, looking back to its history as they imagine its future in I-O psychology. Each contribution demonstrates the value and opportunities computational modeling can provide the individual researcher, research teams, and fields of I-O psychology and management. This volume is an ideal resource for anyone interested in computational modeling, from scholarly consumers to computational model creators.Chapter 1 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

- Psychology--Research--Methodology, Problem solving, Cognitive psychology, Metaphor--Psychological aspects
- Abstract
This book addresses a longstanding impasse in problem solving research: if structured mental representations of problems are required for solving them, how do those arise and, if needed, change? The book argues that established theories underestimate this question due to methodological requirements.Proposing to momentarily suspend these requirements, including the focus on well-defined puzzle tasks, the book suggests to alternatively conduct exploratory studies with more complex, open-ended problems. It presents a qualitative case study of participants working for several days on a mental paper folding task designed to challenge them to construct their own representations. Charting their use of gestures, metaphors, and ever more complex descriptions, it carefully traces the chronology of their thinking. Combining in-depth empirical investigation with theory-building, the book proposes a framework of problem solving that goes beyond established models, accommodating associative, motivational, and affective factors. This book will be of great interest to researchers, academics, and postgraduate students in the fields of cognitive science, psychology, philosophy of mind and cognition, and cognitive artificial intelligence.

- Abstract
The Study of Lives reveals for the first time the extent of Henry A. Murray's considerable influence on the study of personality. Throughout his long and distinguished career, he has either trained or strongly influenced some of the world's leading psychologists, eighteen of whom have written fascinating essays for this book. The range of topics presented here is as diverse and highly original as Murray's own ideas about personality. Everyone concerned with the study of personality will find this book an excellent sampling of the best work being done in the field.'The study of lives'is a phrase Henry A. Murray has often used to describe his own work, and it suggests his central conviction that living beings must be studied as living wholes. Personality, he has repeatedly pointed out, is a dynamic process-a constantly changing configuration of thoughts, feelings, and actions occurring in a social environment and continuing throughout life. If small parts and short segments of human affairs have to be isolated for detailed scrutiny, they must still be understood as parts of a patterned organic system and as segments of a lifelong process. This has never meant for him that all research should take the form of collecting life histories, although his contributions along this line have been outstanding. It implies simply that isolating, fragmenting, and learning just a tiny bit about a lot of people tend to carry us away from what is most worth studying. The essays in this book are grouped under headings that represent some of Murray's strongest interests: His conception of personality as a dynamic process is reflected in Part I, which deals with continuities and changes in the course of life. His interest in devising procedures suitable for disclosing live feelings, fantasies, and adaptations and his insistence on the necessity for an adequate taxonomy of carefully discriminated, carefully defined variables are represented in the papers of Part II. His view that creativity is a central property of human nature has contributed to the reflections and researches that make up Part III. Finally, his concern with values--the great blind spot of traditional science but so obviously a momentous problem for contemporary lives and societies--has been taken up in several different ways by the authors of Part IV.

- Abstract
Witty and fascinating look at Love and the Sex-Drive from world-renowned expert psychoanalysist Theodor Reik.“This book was first published in 1943 and will have been read long ago by all senior psychoanalysts and most students of psychopathology…Even the most obdurate opponents of psychodynamic theory must be disarmed by the high quality of the writing and lost in admiration for the erudition of the author, whose copious quotations, allusions and aphorisms are nearly always apt and frequently both witty and illuminating. They cover a wide field of learning in several languages and range from philosophy and psychology to Lewis Carroll, Punch and the popular press. Too often the ponderous jargon and turgid style of psychoanalytical papers bring back at least one reader to the schoolroom, where he is trying ineffectively to construe the more involved passages of Livy or Thucydides. It is, therefore, refreshing to find a serious work from a psychoanalyst written in clear and impeccable English and leavened on every page with natural sincerity and effortless humour. The main objective of the book is to demonstrate that love, affection and tenderness are not the product of aim-inhibited sex and to controvert the Freudian doctrine that all forms of love are exclusively of sexual origin. Although the author remains a warm and generous admirer of his original teacher, Freud, and of his genius and achievements, he demolishes his libido theory with criticisms, barbed with ironic wit.'His libido system, however, will, I am afraid, have the sad destiny which Herbert Spencer once bemoaned in speaking of'a beautiful theory that was murdered by a gang of brutal facts''-British Journal of Psychiatry.

- Abstract
Artificial Psychology (AP) is a highly multidisciplinary field of study in psychology. AP tries to solve problems which occur when psychologists do research and need a robust analysis method. Conventional statistical approaches have deep rooted limitations. These approaches are excellent on paper but often fail to model the real world. Mind researchers have been trying to overcome this by simplifying the models being studied. This stance has not received much practical attention recently. Promoting and improving artificial intelligence helps mind researchers to find a holistic model of mental models. This development achieves this goal by using multiple perspectives and multiple data sets together with interactive, and realistic models. In this book, the methodology of approximate inference in psychological research from a theoretical and practical perspective has been considered. Quantitative variable-oriented methodology and qualitative case-oriented methods are both used to explainthe set-oriented methodology and this book combines the precision of quantitative methods with information from qualitative methods. This is a book that many researchers can use to expand and deepen their psychological research and is a book which can be useful to postgraduate students. The reader does not need an in-depth knowledge of mathematics or statistics because statistical and mathematical intuitions are key here and they will be learned through practice. What is important is to understand and use the new application of the methods for finding new, dynamic and realistic interpretations. This book incorporates theoretical fuzzy inference and deep machine learning algorithms in practice. This is the kind of book that we wished we had had when we were students. This book covers at least some of the most important issues in mind research including uncertainty, fuzziness, continuity, complexity and high dimensionality which are inherent to mind data. These are elements of artificialpsychology. This book implements models using R software.

- Abstract
Joseph Pieper and Marinus van Uden have proposed a book consisting of previously published papers on the topics of religion, coping, and mental health care. It covers quite a bit of territory: the complex relationships between religion and mental health, surveys that present the views of therapists and patients about the interface between religion and mental health, a case study of a religious patient struggling with psychological problems, empirical studies of religious coping among various groups, and a method for teaching the clinical psychology of religion.Although the papers are diverse, they are unified by several themes. First, the papers convey a balanced approach to religion and psychology. They speak to the potentially positive and negative contributions religion can make to health and well-being. Second, several of the papers focus on the role of religious coping among patients in the Netherlands. This focus is noteworthy since the large majority of this theory and research has been limited to the USA. Third, they underscore the value of a cross-cultural approach to the field. Their surveys point to the importance of religious/worldview perspectives to many patients (and therapists) in the Netherlands, even though the culture is more secularised than the USA. However, their papers also suggest that the manifestation of these religious/worldview perspectives may take different shape in the Netherlands. Fourth, the papers have clinical relevance. The case history of the obsessive-compulsive patient by Van Uden (ch. 4) contains an excellent example of the way in which religious resources can be accessed to counter dysfunctional behaviours. This volume shows initial effort in a newly emerging area of study. It is encouraging to see a significant body of research and practice on the psychology of religion and coping coming out of the Netherlands. It could stimulate further advances in a more cross-culturally sensitive, clinical psychology of religion. – Kenneth Pargament, Professor of Psychology, Bowling Green State University in Ohio, USA

- Abstract
The three primary papers in this special issue explore personality measurement in both directions, that is, more narrow and specific and more broad and heterogeneous. The first paper reviews research on conditional reasoning, with a focus on the construct of aggression. Next, tolerance for contradiction is explored, which is defined as a mode of thinking that accepts and even thrives on apparent contradictory information. The last primary paper covers core self evaluation, which combines measures of four traits: locus of control, self-esteem, generalized self-efficacy, and emotional stability. The special issue concludes with provocative and insightful critique and commentary of the three primary papers. It notes some important points of criticism, but is primarily positive and laudatory of these research programs.

- Abstract
Incest is a universal taboo that is found throughout the history and mythology of the majority of societies. A neglected subject in more recent psychoanalytic work, this book was inspired by the COWAP European Conference of 2003. On Incest explores the theories and reasons behind incest, using themes such as gender identity and perversion. This fourth volume in the Psychoanalysis & Women Series for the Committee on Women and Psychoanalysis of the International Psychoanalytical Association contains papers from leading experts in the field. It includes the papers delivered at the conference, and two additional papers from Mariam Alizade and Brendan MacCarthy, who present their accounts of the discussions as they developed during the conference. The collection deals with a number of issues that surround incest, including Freud's work and how his outlook changed throughout the years; the post-Freudian theories; treatment of both offender and victim through traditional one-on-one and group therapy; the importance of the sex of the analyst; the permutations of the abuser/abused; and the'why'of incest.

- Abstract
This current volume by successful consultants to leading organizations and institutions combines two of their recent papers. The first paper,'Disillusionment', looks at the phenomenon of illusion and disillusion in organizations. The authors believe that illusions construct us, as opposed to the commonly-held view that we create them. This is the main hypothesis in the book, which is examined with the help of examples from personal and institutional points of view. The authors claim we can learn to recognize our own illusions and learn from them, and this is the process they call'disillusionment'. Dialogue of Lacks follows on from the first paper and further elaborates on the process that is disillusionment and discusses'lack of dialogue'.'The trudging that each of us is engaged in - over a shorter or longer distance - whilst grappling with our own illusions is a fundamental journey, intimate and unique, passing through our own construction and touching on the very essence of our life.

- Subjects
- Psychotherapy, Spirituality, Psychotherapy--Religious aspects
- Abstract
This volume is a much-needed exploration of contemporary theories on psychotherapy and spirituality, moving away from the more traditional, non-spiritual aspects of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. The book consists of a dialogue between the opposing sides; most of the papers have responses from the'other'side. This dialogue mirrors the early communication between Freud and Jung regarding spirituality, and opens up doors for continuing collaboration between psychoanalysis as a pure science and the spiritual and religious dimensions within. This inspiring collection of papers grew from the lectures held in 2002 at the London Centre for Psychotherapy. In the time of increased interest in more scientific schools of psychoanalysis such as neuropsycho-analysis, there is also a surge of interest in spirituality within psychoanalysis, as demonstrated by the great interest in these lectures.

- Abstract
Originally published in 1981, this volume presents papers from the first Ontario Symposium on Personality and Social Psychology held at the University of Western Ontario from August 25-27, 1978. The general theme of the symposium was social cognition. The chapters have been grouped into two major parts. Chapters 1-5 focus on the implications of cognitive structures for social cognition, with particular emphasis on the nature of social schemata and the organization of social information. Chapters 6-11 focus on the consequences for social cognition of various cognitive processes and mechanisms, including verbal and nonverbal communicative processes, category accessibility, salience and selective attention, hypothesis-testing, and self-centered biases. Chapter 12 comments on the general perspectives taken in the previous chapters and suggests some additional directions for future consideration. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

- Abstract
In the World Library of Psychologists series, international experts present career-long collections of what they judge to be their most interesting publications – extracts from books, key articles, research findings, and practical and theoretical contributions. Marc H. Bornstein has published widely in experimental, methodological, comparative, developmental, and cultural science as well as neuroscience, pediatrics, and aesthetics. In this volume, he has collected an integrated series of his papers on parenting. Many disciplines over many centuries have expounded on parenting, but theory and opinion have prevailed. Bornstein initiated efforts to make parenting an evidence-based field of study through his journal Parenting: Science and Practice, the Handbook of Parenting, and two monograph series, Monographs in Parenting and Studies in Parenting. In addition, Bornstein has undertaken empirical studies that address the determinants, nature, scope, and consequences of parenting. The writings selected for this collection symbolize the development of an empirical parenting science and the meaning and importance of parenting for the lives and well-being of children, parents, and society. Including a specially written introduction, in which Marc Bornstein reflects on the importance of parenting and contextualizes both the field and the evolution of his wide-ranging career, this collection will serve as a valuable resource for students and researchers of parenting, developmental science, and all disciplines from anthropology to zoology concerned with nurturing, socializing, and educating the next generation.

- Abstract
'Adolescence - when we are no longer children and have not yet reached adulthood - is a time of much disturbance, change and potential for growth. The adolescent is confronted with a body that stretches, changes and grows in all directions, as does her or his mind: he is no longer who he was.'- Inge Wise from her Introduction Adolescence is a turbulent period of time in life. Adolescents experience hormonal and physical changes that affect their mood and emotions. Psychoanalysis can help them resolve these new and often confusing feelings. In this collection, Inge Wise has gathered together a wide range of papers, dealing with issues such as adolescent violence, suicidal feelings, and addiction. Other papers explore psychoanalytic definitions of adolescence and central psychoanalytic contributions to the understanding of adolescence.

- Abstract
The papers in this volume bring together a cross-disciplinary mix of researchers--developmental psychologists, evolutionary biologists, economists, anthropologists, and sociologists--working on the common theme of investments in children. The interdisciplinary conceptual framework adopted by this collection of papers is loosely built around the idea that there are two broad dimensions of parental investments. These include resources (e.g., income, wealth) on the one hand, and behaviors (e.g., parental instrumental support and parental activities that promote warmth, socialization, and cognitive stimulation) on the other. Believing that parental investments yield a'return'in improved child and young adult outcomes, the papers discuss how parents differ in terms of the resources they have available to invest, the choices parents make, the behaviors they engage in, and relevant policy and program interventions. More specifically, core questions addressed by the authors include: Why do some families invest while others do not and are differential investment patterns related to biology, economics, or social factors? What constitutes a successful'investment portfolio?'How are'investments'measured and/or characterized? Are different investments interchangeable, compensating, or off-setting? Given a set of resources, why are some families able to make more effective investments in child outcomes? How well do these investments affect outcomes for children and for these children as young adults? Can interventions or public policies help families build assets or become'better'investors in their children's potential? Developing a better understanding of what investments matter, when they matter, and how resources can be successfully invested in children's potential is key to shaping efficient interventions and social policies. Knowledge of how parents invest and what strategies are effective may help policies which seek to further empower and enable parental involvement and choice for their children.

- Abstract
The International Conference on Cognitive Modeling brings together researchers who develop computational models to explain and predict cognitive data. The core theme of the 2004 conference was'Integrating Computational Models,'encompassing an integration of diverse data through models of coherent phenomena; integration across modeling approaches; and integration of teaching and modeling. This text presents the proceedings of that conference. The International Conference on Cognitive Modeling 2004 sought to grow the discipline of computational cognitive modeling by providing a sophisticated modeling audience for cutting-edge researchers, in addition to offering a forum for integrating insights across alternative modeling approaches in both basic research and applied settings, and a venue for planning the future growth of the discipline. The meeting included a careful peer-review process of 6-page paper submissions; poster-abstracts to include late-breaking work in the area; prizes for best papers; a doctoral consortium; and competitive modeling symposia that compare and contrast different approaches to the same phenomena.

- Abstract
'There are more questions than answers in this book - questions that are important and will continue to intrigue us. This book will be needed to remind us of the different opinions and to help us create tomorrow's theories. Human experience cannot be reduced to sexuality, but there is sexuality in everything human.'- From the Introduction A challenging exploration of contemporary theories on femininity with cutting-edge papers from leading analysts, this volume presents a thought-provoking dialogue on femininity, sexuality, gender and masculinity. These key issues are analysed and discussed in new and stimulating ways, whilst familiar concepts are dissected and dismantled to bring forward fresh ideas. The diversity and developments currently advancing studies on femininity towards new understandings are shown clearly throughout. This rich and inspiring collection of papers grew from the'Sexuality and Gender'conference held in Sweden in 2002, organised by the Committee on Women and Psychoanalysis. The conference was created with the conscious intent of bringing different ideas to bear upon each other in order to promote further research into this vital area.

This essential edition brings together a collection of classic papers from key figures in Kleinian and post-Kleinian thought that explore the relationship between psychoanalysis and art.Sandra Gosso begins with a comprehensive and fascinating guide to the history of this relationship which began with Freud and was developed further by Melanie Klein at a time when most analysts were moving away from links with art. Melanie Klein's pivotal paper,'Infantile Anxiety Situations Reflected in a Work of Art and in the Creative Impulse', follows the Introduction. The other papers featured are mainly from British analysts who expanded on Melanie Klein's ideas, inspired by the influence of the creative Bloomsbury and Imago Groups.

- Abstract
The third volume in the The Practice of Psychotherapy series, Elusive Elements in Practice brings together a collection of papers, examining their ideas and theories more commonly regarded as off-centre, or indeed elusive, in psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The papers in this volume concentrate on the religious and spiritual dimension of the therapeutic encounter, the'aesthetic experience', creativity and mysticism. These'moments of relatedness', or meetings of minds, are discussed and examined with the help of clinical examples.'...psychotherapists tend to agree on what is just too eccentric and is to be regarded with reserve and suspicion. These ideas are left on the margins and, getting less attention, they are more elusive. They will not get concentrated consideration either in the consulting room or in the study. This is one reason why they are more elusive.

- Abstract
Dimitris Anastasopoulos and Evangelos Papanicolaou have gathered together a distinguished group of contributors to focus on the therapist's participation in therapy and the influence of personal factors on the therapeutic relationship. The majority of the papers grew out of the proceedings of the fourth EFPP Congress of the Adults Section in 2000 and explore the therapist-patient relationship with the emphasis on the influence of the therapist as opposed to that of the patient. Topics discussed in this collection include the impact of the patient on the analyst, how the analyst's clinical theory and personal philosophy affect the analytic process, the effect of the therapist's dreams on the therapeutic process, the psychoanalyst's influence on the collaborative process, and intersubjective phenomena and emotional exchange in the psychoanalytic process. Certain papers focus mainly on theory while others are more clinically-oriented. This volume presents an overview of historic and current thinking and aims to generate yet more discussion on this evolving and important issue. It will be of interest to practicing and training psychotherapists.

- Abstract
In 2013, the journalist Julie Burchill wrote a mischievous newspaper column defending a friend against political extremists. She was pursued by an outraged mob, denounced in Parliament and never published in that paper - or any other - for many years. Welcome To The Woke Trials is part-memoir and part-indictment of what happened to her between then and now, as the regiments of Woke took over; an irreverent and entertaining analysis of the key elements of a continuing and disturbing phenomenon. Raised in a Communist household and a lifelong Labour voter, Burchill also makes the case for a progressive future politics, a time when we see ourselves as a common humanity with similar hopes and visions - rather than a childish world of villains and victims.

- Abstract
This volume gathers together the recent writings of the analysts and members of the Freudian School of Melbourne and the Belgian analyst Christian Fierens, displaying the ongoing interrogation by the School of Lacanian psychoanalysis into its history, theories and practices.Within the framework of Lacan's interventions in Freudian psychoanalysis, the book in particular highlights Lacan's inventions in theoretical discourse and clinical practice, including the no-sexual relation, the discursive structures of language, the school, the cartel and the pass. Theoretical shibboleths such as the Oedipus complex are questioned, while the historical writings of Sabina Spielrein are read and interpreted anew. Chapters also engage with the psychoanalysis of children, the questions posed by the psychoses to psychoanalysis and the intersection of creativity and the arts in new and original ways.Bringing together a range of expert contributions, this text will be an illuminating resource for scholars and practitioners of psychoanalysis.

- Abstract
Volume 25 of The Annual is dedicated to the memory of Michael Franz Basch, who achieved distinction as both a psychoanalytic theorist of the first rank and an authority on the nature and conduct of dynamic psychotherapy. A wide range of original contributions bear witness to his theoretical, clinical, and educational interests.A number of papers remind us of Basch's prominence as a self-psychological theorist: Elson's self-psychological reappraisal of self-pity, dependence, and manipulation as self-states; Ornstein's developmental perspective on power, self-esteem, and destructive aggression; Tolpin's review of sexuality from the standpoint of normal self development; and Wolf's discussion of self psychology and the'aging self.'Basch's life-long educational concerns gain expression in Goldberg's discussion of clinical teaching, particularly the challenge of leading of case conferences; and Ornstein's and Kay's thoughtful consideration of'enduring difficulties'in American medical education.Additional highlights of the volume include: Fawcett's consideration of the role of pharmacotherapy in psychodynamic treatment; Jaffe's consideration of the applicability of hierarchical models to assessment and intervention in brief psychotherapy; Galatzer-Levy's review of the'witch'metapsychology; Gedo's analysis of mythic themes in the operas Don Giovanni and Der Rosenkavalier; Modell's reflections on metaphor and affects; and Kernberg's discussion of a'new psychoanalytic mainstream,'which he compares and contrasts with a parallel convergence of Kohutian and interpersonal analytic approaches. Many of these contributions incorporate reflections on Basch as a teacher and colleague, and the entire volume is framed by Goldberg's moving tribute. Analysts and psychotherapists sharing Basch's commitment to academic and clinical excellence and his keen awareness of the pragmatic requirements of doing effective therapy will find in Volume 25 a cornucopia of riches.

- Abstract
This valuable self-help book for people affected by cancer, their loved ones and friends focuses on self-care when life hurts. It explores the impact of cancer and explains why the usual ways of coping may leave people stuck. The first book of its kind to focus on the scientifically based Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) approach, it helps people to find ways to cope with painful thoughts and feelings, and to rebuild a meaningful life despite the cancer. With an emphasis on value-based living the book illustrates skills such as mindfulness and the development of acceptance to help people affected by cancer to participate in a fuller life and gain a greater sense of well-being. It combines evidence-based practice with the experiences of people who are living with cancer in the form of numerous quotations throughout, as well as paper and pencil ‘thought'exercises. Living Your Life with Cancer through Acceptance and Commitment Therapy helps people affected by cancer to feel more able to sit with the uncertainty of their future, show themselves kindness and compassion and to learn to be true to themselves, no matter what the cancer throws at them. It is also important reading for psychological therapists working in oncology.

- Abstract
Many people spend considerable time seeking a sense of purpose in life and, concomitant with that, a sense of personal identity. This book demystifies this search, revealing why this search is a fallacy. The purpose is to inform readers about results in neuroscience and biophysics that may guide us to some liberation needed in the current age of great complexity in life with a diverse burden of chores; a deliverance from some afflictions that prevent individuals from achieving the true purpose of our lives. Among these afflictions we find two primordial concerns: the belief and subsequent attachment to a self, and the conviction that life must have a deep purpose in which we are major players. While this is a scientific text, it can easily be read by a lay audience, written with minimal technical jargon and with references to scientific papers enough to satisfy the curious. We have tried to extract the essence of scientific observations such that we can glimpse at those aforementioned concerns about the self and life, observations which help us comprehend what we are and what we become, the being and becoming of our own selves and natural phenomena around us. Jose Luis Perez Velazquez received a PhD in Molecular Physiology & Biophysics. His research seeks principles of biological organisation. He worked at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and was Professor at the University of Toronto. Currently he is a Research Scholar at the Ronin Institute and lives in the natural paradise of Asturias, in Northern Spain. Vera Nenadovic is a nurse practitioner, neuroscientist and entrepreneur. She has 30 years of experience in healthcare from First Nations communities to intensive care units. Her research focuses on predicting brain injury outcomes. She is a clinician and researcher at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab Hospital. Her startup company BrainsView is commercializing software that analyzes brainwaves to monitor brain function and recovery after head injury. The relation between psychiatric disorders and general medical conditions is currently a topic of much interest. This volume includes a broad range of papers dealing with psychosocial issues in the morbidity of asthma, depressive symptoms which appear to be more common in asthma patients than in the general population, the link between asthma and anxiety disorders, or side effects of corticosteroid therapy. Furthermore, one paper looks at problems with adherence to treatment and the interaction between patient and provider and another one presents a model of changing human health behavior. Emotional disturbances contributing to several primarily psychogenic illnesses that mimic asthma are also covered. Each chapter includes an overview of the field for those with minimal knowledge of the topic. This book is written by experts for clinicians, general practitioners, mental health professionals, allergists, pulmonologists, and primary care practitioners involved in treating asthma patients especially with a view to the psychological aspects and their influence on the disease.

- Abstract
Classifier constructions are universal to sign languages and exhibit unique properties that arise from the nature of the visual-gestural modality. The major goals are to bring to light critical issues related to the study of classifier constructions and to present state-of-the-art linguistic and psycholinguistic analyses of these constructions. It is hoped that by doing so, more researchers will be inspired to investigate the nature of classifier constructions across signed languages and further explore the unique aspects of these forms. The papers in this volume discuss the following issues: •how sign language classifiers differ from spoken languages; •cross-linguistic variation in sign language classifier systems; •the role of gesture; •the nature of morpho-syntactic and phonological constraints on classifier constructions; •the grammaticization process for these forms; and •the acquisition of classifier forms. Divided into four parts, groups of papers focus on a particular set of issues, and commentary papers end each section.

- Autobiographical memory
- Abstract
This special issue of the Psychology Press journal Memory spotlights and aims to encourage research that uses a functional approach to investigate autobiographical memory (AM) in everyday life. This approach relies on studying cognition, in this case AM, taking into account the psychological, social, or cultural-historic context in which it occurs. Areas of interest include understanding to what ends AM is used by individuals and in social relationships, how it is related to other cognitive abilities and emotional states, and how memory represents our inner and outer world. One insight gained by taking this approach is that levels and types of accuracy need not always be regarded as memory'failures'but are sometimes integral to a self-memory system that serves a variety of meaningful ends of human activity. The papers in this issue include theoretical and empirical work by individuals who have made central contributions to our understanding of memory functions in their programmatic work. Previously hypothesized functions of AM fall into three broad domains: self, social, and directive. Each paper addresses how AM serves one or more of these functions and thereby examines the usefulness and adequacy of this trio.

The selection of peer-reviewed chapters in this edition of Stress and Anxiety addresses three major areas of topical interest: Theory, practice and measurement. Authors ask ``What is the meaning of stress''and offer a reconceptualization of the topic. They take us on a journey across decades of strategies we use to cope with stress. Recommendations for practice based on theory form a significant part of this edition. A focus on children and practice implications at home and in the school are presented. All papers presented in this volume are not only relevant to theory and understanding factors which influence behaviour but, most importantly, there are significant implications for practice and measurement.
