The selection of peer-reviewed chapters in this edition of Stress and Anxiety addresses three major areas of topical interest: Theory, practice and measurement. Authors ask ``What is the meaning of stress''and offer a reconceptualization of the topic. They take us on a journey across decades of strategies we use to cope with stress. Recommendations for practice based on theory form a significant part of this edition. A focus on children and practice implications at home and in the school are presented. All papers presented in this volume are not only relevant to theory and understanding factors which influence behaviour but, most importantly, there are significant implications for practice and measurement.

This book celebrates the 40th anniversary of the STAR Society - the enduring legacy of our esteemed colleagues Charles Spielberger, Henk Van Der Ploeg, and Ralf Schwarzer who conceptualised the idea for a society focused on the measure of stress. Since that time, the focus has moved on from measurement alone, to include stress, coping and resilience: theory, research, and practice. Exactly 20 years after its inception, we initiated the annual STAR Lifetime Career Award to members with a long and distinguished history of scientific contributions in the field of stress, anxiety and coping. Around the same time, the STAR Early Career Award was established to honour researchers achievements in the science of stress research within the first five years post their doctorate. Last, but not least STAR society gives a STAR Student Development Award to a student for the best paper on stress, anxiety and coping in theory, practice or research in the previous year. We invited all past award winners to contribute to this book which has yielded an exciting overview of the work of the individual researchers and their current research focus. Here Hans Eysenck applies the principles of modern learning theory to account for the observed phenomena of hysteria and anxiety. Such principles were initially developed through the experiments and theories of Pavlov, Hull, and Tolman. When The Dynamics of Anxiety and Hysteria initially appeared, these were considered the most advanced, relevant, and applicable to the subject matter. They have not been superseded by later work. The Dynamics of Anxiety and Hysteria has never been published in the United States. It was the fifth book Eysenck authored as part of a series of experimental studies and theoretical work carried out under the auspices of the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of London. Two of the first four books-Dimensions of Personality and The Psychology of Politics, have been reissued with new introductions. These focus on dimensional analysis of personality based on experimental and empirical studies. The present work, on the other hand, goes beyond classification to a study of dynamics; from nosology to aetiology; from description to causation. Eysenck scientifically explores such topics as learning theory and human behavior, personality and learning theory; personality and perceptual processes, socialization and personality, drugs and personality, and psychological theory and psychiatric practice. This volume, which complements Transaction's other new editions of Eysenck's groundbreaking work, will be of lasting significance to psychologists, psychiatrists, behavioralists, and students of personality disorders. He provided for modern psychology the empirical foundations of themes that previosly were the monopoly of psychoanalysis. Hans J. Eysenck (1916-1997), a professor of psychology at the University of London and the director of its psychological department at the Institute of Psychiatry, was best known for his experimental researches in the field of personality. This work challenges the notion that anxiety and depression amount to a mental illness denoting that something is wrong with the individual sufferer. Instead, anxiety and depression are described as perfectly rational responses to difficulties in the sufferer's world, experienced subjectively by that person. An essential contrast is drawn between objective conceptions of normality (what reality ought to be as per commercial and other objectifying sources) and the reality of the individual's subjective experience of the world (abuse, unemployment, and so on). Chapters include tackling the myth of normality; examining shyness; and analysing the way in which assumptions behind the use of language can foster anxiety and depression. The book's primary purpose is to explain the meaning of anxiety as experienced by the sufferer. These insights also lead to a view, by way of secondary purpose, that the role of the therapist is not in'curing'the individual, but rather to negotiate demystification and to provide insight into the effects of the problems in the sufferer's world, based on the sufferer and the therapist's shared subjective understanding.

For our students? For the public at large? For an inner sense of feeling supported by science? Most disciplines are concerned with cumulative knowledge, aimed toward self-affirmation and self-definition, that is, establishing a sense of legitimacy. The three parts of this volume are directed toward the goal of affirming a public and private sense of the legitimacy of psychoanalysis, thereby shaping professional identity. In each contribution we adhere to the precepts of'scientific inquiry', with a commitment to affirming or disconfirming clinical propositions, utilizing consensually agreed upon methods of observation, and arriving at inferences that are persuasive and have the potential to move the field forward. This book serves two purposes. First, it provides the psychoanalyst or psychotherapist with a more flexible method of practicing psychoanalysis. This is the clinical approach of'analytic contact', a technical stance in which more patients can be reached in a deeper and more helpful manner. Analytic contact is an operationally robust Kleinian approach for the real world of private practice and targets the combination of internal and external factors there are consistently at play with all patients.The second aim of this book is to examine specific groups of patients that present unique challenges to the psychoanalyst. Many texts about anxiety are based either in the philosophical tradition or within the medical model under the guise of discussions about post-traumatic stress disorder. In the case of fantasy, however, the usual sources of discussion are in literary and cultural criticism. Bringing the two together offers the scope for a book with an original theme. The balance between clinical ideas, philosophical ideas and literary sources is aimed at keeping both potential audiences interested. Patterns of Emotions: A New Analysis of Anxiety and Depression provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of anxiety and depression phenomena experienced in some degree by everyone and in crippling intensity by many. This book is a sequel to The Face of Emotion (Izard, 1971), which presented a general conceptual framework for the study of the personality, a theory of the emotions, and evidence for the universality of the fundamental emotions of interest, joy, surprise, distress, anger, disgust, contempt, shame, and fear. The book defines the problems of anxiety and depression, in the framework of differential emotion theory, as combinations or patterns of interacting fundamental emotions and bodily feelings. The differential emotion theory of anxiety and depression is compared with psychoanalytic theory, cognitive theory, and biogenetic theory. A number of studies are presented which support the differential emotion analysis of anxiety and depression. The book also presents studies of various life situations in which a particular fundamental emotion is dominant. What has been found repeatedly is that, in each such situation, the dominant emotion occurs in a pattern of dynamically related fundamental emotions. The patterns for a variety of commonly experienced and universal emotion situations are presented and discussed.

Psychological Stress: Psychoanalytic and Behavioral Studies of Surgical Patients attempts to present as complete a picture as possible of the psychological aspects of surgery. The primary purpose is to highlight the theoretical implications by conveying what has been learned concerning the dynamics of human adjustment to stressful life events. It also draws attention to some of the main practical implications with respect to three important types of problems : (a) the formulation of policies of medical management which take account of the psychological needs of sick people; (b) the improvement of diagnostic procedures relevant for predicting high or low stress tolerance; and (c) the development of effective methods of psychological preparation which could be widely applied as part of a mental health program designed to reduce the disruptive emotional impact of many different types of potential disasters. The book is organized into two parts. Part I formulates a large number of propositions concerning the dynamics of stress behavior. These propositions generally deal with the causes and consequences of various types of emotional reactions and adjustment mechanisms that are frequently activated when people are exposed to severe environmental threats, dangers, or deprivations. Part II focuses on two reaction variables which appear to be of fundamental importance in adjustment to stress: (a) fear of body damage, as manifested by verbalized attitudes of apprehensiveness, overt signs of emotional tension, and overt attempts to execute protective actions; and (b) externalized anger, as manifested by verbalized attitudes of resentment toward persons in the immediate environment outbursts of rage, and overt acts of opposition or resistanceto the demands of danger-control personnel.

Theorists are increasingly arguing that it is fruitful to approach anxiety from the cognitive perspective, and the empirical evidence supports that contention. The cognitive perspective is also adopted in this book, but the approach represents a development and extension of earlier ones. For example, most previous theories and research have been based on anxiety either in clinical or in normal groups. In contrast, one of the central themes of this book is that there are great advantages to be gained from a joint consideration of clinical and normal anxiety.Another theme of this book is that it is of major importance to establish whether or not there is a cognitive vulnerability factor which is associated with at least some forms of clinical anxiety. It is argued (with supporting evidence) that there is a latent cognitive vulnerability factor for generalized anxiety disorder which manifests itself under stressful conditions. This vulnerability factor is characterized by hypervigilance, and is found predominantly in normals high in the personality dimension of trait anxiety.The scope of the book extends to the effects of anxiety on performance and to the phenomenon of worry, which is regarded as the cognitive component of anxiety.
