People spontaneously imitate a wide range of different behaviors. The interest in this phenomenon dates back to at least the 18th century when Adam Smith (1759) argued that imitation can be seen as a primitive form of sympathy. Despite the longstanding interest, it was not until the 20th century that different research fields within psychology and neuroscience started empirically investigating this social phenomenon. This book brings together leading researchers from various domains to provide readers with a recent overview of developments in automatic imitation research. This is an open access book.

How to Build a Human Brain takes a developmental approach to understanding brain structure and function. This book presents the creative processes in art throughout history and cultures. A specific cognitive function, the homospatial process, is extensively documented and described, as well as short and long term scientific research in artistic creation and its applications to aesthetic appreciation. Drawing on research in psychology of creativity, creative operations, and relationship of mental health and illness to creativity, the author delves into the psychology of creativity in art and other fields, and presents intensive and experimental studies of Rembrandt's self-portraiture, controlled experimental assessment of prizewinning young artists, descriptions of three key creative processes, and in-depth exploration of the operation of the specific creative homospatial process in works of art throughout history. The book also presents specific controlled experimentation on use of the homospatial process, its application in the creation of clothing design, and two explorations of major artists and the relationship of mental health and creativity, ending with a reflection on the role and function of creativity in society.

This book offers an accessible guide to the role that Zen has played and, alongside Buddhism, might play in both Eastern and Western attempts to alleviate mental suffering. Since its beginnings 2500 years ago, the central belief of Buddhism has been that what we perceive as “reality” is a mental representation; a religious belief which has since been substantiated by the evidence of neuroscience. The work and progress of clinical medicine, psychiatry and psychology have attempted to alleviate the sufferings of life, but the current approaches to mental health in psychiatry, the neurosciences and cognitivism don't fully address the complexity and mutual inter-relationship of the variety of factors involved in mental suffering, and its non-linear and chaotic aspects. Zen Buddhism, on the other hand, encourages access to reality, and so this book will explore, scientifically, the ways in which it's guiding principles can be deployed to support and enhance Western, clinical solutions to mental strife.

This edited volume seeks to integrate research and scholarship on the topic of embodiment, with the idea being that thinking and feeling are often grounded in more concrete representations related to perception and action. The book centers on psychological approaches to embodiment and includes chapters speaking to development as well as clinical issues, though a larger number focus on topics related to cognition and neuroscience as well as social and personality psychology. These topical chapters are linked to theory-based chapters centered on interoception, grounded cognition, conceptual metaphor, and the extended mind thesis. Further, a concluding section speaks to critical issues such as replication concerns, alternative interpretations, and future directions. The final result is a carefully conceived product that is a comprehensive and well-integrated volume on the psychology of embodiment. The primary audience for this book is academic psychologists from many different areas of psychology (e.g., social, developmental, cognitive, clinical). The way we make sense of emotional situations has long been considered a foundation for the construction of our emotional experiences. Sometimes emotional meanings become distorted and so do our emotional experiences become disturbed. In the last decades, an embodied construction of emotional meanings has emerged. In this book, the embodied simulation framework is introduced for distorted emotional and motivational appraisals such as irrational beliefs, focusing on hyper-reactive emotional and motivational neural embodied simulations as core processes of cognitive vulnerability to emotional disorders. By embodying distorted emotional cognition we can extend the traditional views of the development of distorted emotional appraisals beyond learning from stress-sensitization process. Conclusions for the conceptualization of distorted emotional appraisals and treatment implications are discussed. Distorted emotional cognitions such as rigidthinking (I should succeed), awfulizing (It's awful) and low frustration tolerance (I can't stand it) are both vulnerabilities to emotional disorders and targets of psychotherapy. In this book, I argue that distorted emotional cognitions which act as proximal vulnerability to emotional disorders are embodied in hyper-reactive neural states involved in dysregulated emotions. Traditionally, excessive negative knowledge has been considered the basis of the cognitive vulnerability to emotional disorders. I suggest that the differences in the affective embodiments of distorted cognition confer its vulnerability status, rather than the differences in dysfunctional knowledge. I propose that negative knowledge and stress-induced brain changes conflate each other in building cognitive vulnerability to disturbed emotion. This model of distorted emotional cognition suggests new integration of learning and medication interventions in psychotherapy. This book is an important contribution to the literature given that a new model for the conceptualization of cognitive vulnerability is presented which extends the way we integrate biological, behavioral, and memory interventions in cognitive restructuring. This work is part of a larger project on embodied clinical cognition.

Christian Lönneker systematically explores the phenomenon of magical thinking in the context of severe grief reactions focusing on intrusive forms reported by bereaved individuals seeking professional support. The author succeeds in proposing a comprehensive definition of magical thinking and a rationale for its association with grief based on various disciplines, such as psychology, anthropology, and the cognitive science of religion. I first met Ernest Furchtgott twenty-five years ago after joining the faculty of the College of Social Work at the University of South Carolina. At that time, Ernie chaired the Department of Psychology. In the following three years we collaborated with an Academic Committee on Gerontology in conceptualizing and shaping the University's Certificate of Graduate Study in Gerontology Program, guiding it to final approval by the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education. For twenty years we team­ taught our graduate-level course,'Psychosocial Approaches to Geron­ tology,'involving colleagues from related disciplines. Over the years, we examined and jointly graded hundreds of research posters prepared by our graduate students in gerontology as their final course requirement. Several years ago, Ernie formally retired from the university. He in­ stantly agreed to my request that he continue teaching the psychology of aging portion of our interdisciplinary course. On campus nearly every day since retirement, Ernie frequently telephoned to discuss are­ cent article in The Gerontologist or a paper presentation that had ex­ cited him at the Gerontological Society's annual scientific meeting. He maintained a clear presence in the academic community.

In this book Jan D. Sinnott synthesizes her 20 years of research on lifespan cognitive development to describe the growth of complex (or `postformal') thought in adults. She shows specifically how adults improve mentally over a lifetime and learn to think in more complex and wiser ways. Applications of postformal thought are demonstrated in such diverse areas as - family relations - adult education - personal identity - and spirituality. Chapters examine relations between postformal thought and pertinent variables such as age, health, memory, and vocabulary. Other sections deal with issues in humanistic psychology such as - guided imagery - mind - body medicine - and creative intentionality.

The life span of day treatment for children in the United States is relatively short, covering a period of about 50 years. Although the first 20 years saw little growth in the number of centers operating around the country, the concept of day treatment was recognized by the Joint Commission on Mental Illness and Health in 1961 as the most significant treatment innovation of this century. Enthusiasm for this treatment modality gained impetus from growing dissatisfaction among many mental health care providers who had no choice but to place children in a highly restrictive hospital environment. Day treat­ ment did not carry the stigma associated with inpatient placement. The children could now remain with their own families and within their own communities. The parents could be actively included in their child's treatment. This new modality avoided the short- and long-term negative effects of institutionalization, and there was a fa­ vorable cost discrepancy between day and inpatient mental health services. In more recent years, there has been growing evidence of the efficacy of day treatment as an intensive therapeutic environment for children and their parents. Despite these advantages, day treatment has continued to be underutilized in favor of inpatient treatment by both the psychiatric community and third-party payers. Only recently is it being acknowledged by some insurers as a therapeutically sound and financially advantageous alternative to inpatient services. Conse­ quently, it is showing signs of intense growth nationally.

This volume of Advances in Clinical Child Psychology, which is the second under our editorship and the sixteenth of the series, continues the tradi­ tion of including a broad range of timely topics on the study and treat­ ment of children and adolescents. Volume 16 includes contributions per­ taining to prevention, adolescents, families, cognitive processes, and methodology. The issue of prevention in child clinical psychology is no longer restricted to a few speculative sentences in the future directions part of a discussion section. Prevention research is actually being undertaken, as reflected in two contributions to the volume. Winett and Anderson pro­ vide a promising framework for the development, evaluation, and dis­ semination of programs aimed at the prevention of HIV among youth. Lorion, Myers, Bartels, and Dennis address some of the conceptual and methodological issues in preventive intervention research with children. Adolescent development and adjustment is an important area of study in clinical child psychology. Two contributors address key and somewhat related topics, social competence and depression in adoles­ cence. Inderbitzen critically reviews the assessment methods and meth­ odologies for social competence and peer relations in adolescence. Reynolds analyzes contemporary issues and perspectives pertaining to adolescent depression.

This volume of Advances in Clinical Child Psychology is the third under our editorship and the seventeenth of the series. It continues the tradition of examining a broad range of topics and issues related to the study and treatment of child and adolescent behavior problems. Over the years, the series has served to identify important and exciting new developments in the field and provide scholarly review of current thought and practices. In the openingchapter, Cichetti, Toth, and Lynch examine attachment theory and its implications for psychopathology. They provide exacting commentary on the status of the construct of attachment and its potential role in the development of diverse psychopathologies. Similarly, Richards explores the impact of infant cognitive psychophysiology and its role in normal and abnormal development in the second chapter. Both of these chapters address issues of risk for subsequent psychopathology and are deeply embedded in developmental theory. In Chapter 3/ Nottelmann and Jensen tackle the important issue of comorbidity in psychiatric diagnosis from a developmental perspective.

This volume, like its predecessors, attempts to high­ light the important emerging issues and breakthroughs that are likely to guide clinical work and research in our field of inquiry in the near future. In selecting authors to contribute to this series, we seek out those whose work is innovative, relevant, and likely to influence future work in clinical child psychology and related fields. Each author is chosen either on the basis of potentially important new information or view­ points in his or her own work, or because the author is especially well qualified to discuss a topic that is not restricted to one program of research. In this volume, a wide range of particularly important topics is addressed. White and Sprague describe an innovative program of re­ search aimed at identifying the underlying deficit in attention-deficit disorder. Schonert-Reichl and Offer summarize and integrate research on gender differences in psychological symptoms among adolescents. Borden and Ollendick offer a cogent proposal concerning the develop· ment and differentiation of subtypes of autism based on social behavior.

With this volume, Advances in Clinical Child Psychology enters its second decade. The goal of the series is to provide clinicians and researchers in the fields of clinical child psychology, child psychiatry, school psychol­ ogy, and related disciplines with an annual compilation of statements that summarize the new data, concepts, and techniques that advance our ability to help troubled children. Looking forward, the series intends to highlight the emerging developments that will guide our field of inquiry and practice; looking back, the eleven volumes in the series provide an interesting chronicle of changes in our understanding. Each year, scholars are chosen whose recent work is on the leading edge of clinical child psychology and its sibling disciplines, who offer potentially important new theoretical viewpoints, or who are well qualified to discuss topics of emerging importance that are not identified with one particular laboratory. Perhaps more than in any previous vol­ ume, the authors of the present volume have achieved fully the goals of the series. Volume 11 is a rich source of exciting ideas, important new information, and cogent analysis. The topics of these chapters, moreover, can be seen to represent the important broad themes in clinical child psychology today. The volume begins with two chapters that describe emerging theoretical perspectives.

This volume is based on a conference held at West Virginia University in April, 2000 in recognition of the career-long contributions to psychology of Hayne W. Reese, Centennial Professor of Psychology, who retired from the University at the end of the 1999-2000 academic year. Although Professor Reese may be even better known for his contributions to developmental psychology, his influential scholarly work on philosophical and conceptual issues that impact all of psychology provided the impetus for the confer­ ence. Behavior theory and philosophy was the name given by Professor Reese and one of the authors in this volume, Jon Krapfl, to a course that they developed at West Virginia University in the late 1970s. 1t seemed appro­ priate to adopt its title for both the conference and this volume as the shared theme involves the ideas that have shaped modern behavior analysis. A number of people contributed to the success of the May, 2000 confer­ ence honoring Hayne Reese and we thank them all for their efforts: Dean Duane Nellis of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at WVU offered enthusiastic support for the project both financially and through his as­ signment of staff to help with the conference. Mark Dalessandro, Relations Director for the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, served as the'point man'for the conference and made all of the local arrangements both within the university and the community.

A growing body of evidence shows that physical activity can be a cost-effective and safe intervention for the prevention and treatment of a wide range of mental health problems. As researchers and clinicians around the world look for evidence-supported alternatives and complements to established forms of therapy (medication and psychotherapy), interest in physical activity mounts. The Routledge Handbook of Physical Activity and Mental Health offers the most comprehensive review of the research evidence on the effects of physical activity on multiple facets of mental health. The fifth volume of Imagery emanates from the matrix of presentations offered after the conventions of the American Association for Mental Imagery for the years 1987 and 1988. The first meeting was held in Toronto; the second at Yale University. An overview of the presentations covered such a variety of subjects that we thought the subtitle would be most appropriately--Current Perspectives. For the first time in five volumes, two contributions are related to anthropological imagery by Caughey and Brink. John Caughey, whose book, Imaginary Social Worlds pioneered the social psychology approach to the silent inner imagination, offers a fine chapter in anthropological imagery of his own experiences with Sufi mystics in Pakistan and Micronesian Islanders in the Western Pacific compared to middle-class Americans. As in past volumes, the current volume of Advances in Clinical Child Psychology strives for a broad range of timely topics on the study and treatment of children, adolescents, and families. Volume 18 includes a new array of contributions covering issues pertaining to treatment, etiol­ ogy, and psychosocial context. The first two contributions address conduct problems. Using quali­ tative research methods, Webster-Stratton and Spitzer take a unique look at what it is like to be a parent of a young child with conduct problems as well as what it is like to be a participant in a parent training program. On an MTV special aired in 2000, young interviewees were asked to confess the worse thing they were ever told during a romantic breakup. One person tearfully responded'that I suck in bed.'More recently, an acquaintance of mine admitted to his new girlfriend that he'has a mean streak.'She decided not to date him after that. Another memorable and painful example of openness occurred years ago when I served as a member of a suicide intervention team. I was called to a very disturbing scene in an upscale neighborhood to console a woman who was threaten­ ing to take her life on the lawn in front of her children. Her husband had just confessed his long-term affair to her that morning and she felt that her world was coming apart. Fortunately, she did not take her life but was left with the humiliation of haVing her neighbors know about her private troubles. The question these examples bring to mind is,'Why do people so often reveal potentially stigmatizing personal information to others?'The reader probably has an intuitive answer to this question already. It can seem like such a burden-even torture-to keep secrets from other people. Hiding such things as feelings of discontent from a boyfriend or girlfriend, violations of the law from close friends, and indiscretions from employers can be alienating. People want others to know them; therefore they often end up disclosing self-incriminating information.
