Esta captura es más evidente en las decisiones de política económica, y expresa la acumulación de poder material de las corporaciones en las últimas décadas, que ha sido posible por la debilidad de la sociedad civil y las dificultades de la izquierda para ser una alternativa de gobierno.

Réfléchir au vote blanc reste transgressif en 2018, mais quand on voit l'ampleur que le bulletin blanc a pris dans les urnes lors de la dernière élection présidentielle, qui pourrait prétendre qu'une telle réflexion n'est pas largement légitime? L'auteur, de juillet 2016 à juillet 2017 a effectué sept rencontres de quinze invités (parmi lesquels se trouvaient des personnalités politiques, universitaires, et journalistiques) pour réfléchir à cette question et nous offre aujourd'hui dans son ouvrage la synthèse de ses échanges.

Democratic institution-building experiences, innovative forms of social organization, and the development of multiple state-society interfaces represent a significant political phenomenon in Latin America in the last half-century. By comparing the two largest countries of the subcontinent, Brazil and Mexico, Democratizing the State examines social accountability and social control regimes. These regimes are conceived configurations of relationships between actors, organizational structures, norms, and resources, all arranged in a stable and institutionalized manner to exert social control over state actors and functions. The book addresses the contrasting characteristics and different functions through which the citizenry and civil society exert control over state action in both countries. Characterizing these experiences broadly as regimes is novel and enlightening regarding the work of practitioners and scholars on political participation, social accountability, and democracy in the global South and the global North.

Le fatalisme exprime ainsi une conception de l'ordre du monde qui serait le résultat d'une concaténation de mécanismes déterminants et contraignants sur lesquels les dirigeants, comme les citoyens n'auraient aucune prise. Pourtant, les imaginaires fatalistes sont aussi porteurs de destins heureux, d'alternatives possibles et d'espérances prometteuses à accomplir, telle celle relative au fatalisme révolutionnaire. Le fatalisme se donne ainsi à voir comme une sorte de monnaie d'échange entre les détenteurs du pouvoir (gouvernants) et les décerneurs de pouvoir (gouvernés) qui, en fonction des intérêts, situations et enjeux politiques, s'inscrivent dans une rationalisation ou une déconstruction du fatalisme par le biais des imaginaires qui les fécondent.

Cette progression remarquable ne saurait être analysée comme le simple effet de quelque soudaine « fascisation » de la société française, ce qui négligerait la stratégie de « guerre culturelle » mise en œuvre entre ces deux époques par les extrêmes droites.Au tout début du XXIe siècle en effet, les extrêmes droites ont su anticiper le développement des nouveaux moyens de communication, d'Internet aux réseaux sociaux, et bousculer les façons de faire de la politique dans un champ d'intervention ainsi démultiplié. Reprenant la vieille préconisation du théoricien d'extrême droite Dominique Venner de « combattre plus par l'astuce que par la force », elles ont développé une stratégie d'influence qui n'hésitait pas à faire usage de toutes sortes de manipulations, et préfigurait ainsi l'« ère des fake news » actuelle.

Corona, the Lockdown, and the Media investigates media influence on policies to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Bernhagen and Kybelka propose that news reporting on the pandemic pitches human impact against economic consequences of the virus and of restrictive policy measures designed to contain it. They argue that the use of these frames influences governments'decisions to enact or lift lockdown measures. Using time series data from England, France, and Germany, the authors show that news reporting on COVID-19 was indeed characterized by these media frames. However, there is no evidence of media influence on government policy. Instead, the authors find that anti-pandemic policy decisions were responsive to public opinion in these countries.

The vision and discourse of Kingdom of God has many a time been confined within a logic of power where we are prone to valorize God's power in order to valorize our own power on Earth, especially the logic of sovereignty at the level of self and society, rather than realize God's mercy. El discurso político no es hoy un objeto de estudio novedoso, aunque no por ello su campo ha sido completamente discernido; de hecho, incluso el concepto “discurso político” podría incardinar cierto pleonasmo pues, ¿qué discurso escapa realmente a la naturaleza política de las interacciones humanas?, ¿cuál de las formas políticas que practica una comunidad escapan de lo discursivo? En rigor, no hay hecho político que prescinda de la discursividad que lo significa y que lo realiza, del mismo modo en que no hay discurso que no tenga una dimensión política.Este libro es producto del seminario de investigación constituido a partir del I Coloquio “De la emoción a la lógica en el discurso político”, evento celebrado entre el 21 y el 23 de septiembre de 2022 como parte del proyecto “Ethos, logos o pathos: análisis retórico de la argumentación política” (Conahcyt, México, 2022). En dicho seminario, se discutieron diferentes aspectos del discurso político, inicialmente a partir de una perspectiva retórica centrada en la argumentación y desde presupuestos clásicos; porque, en definitiva, ¿es conveniente un análisis del discurso de espaldas a los conceptos retóricos de la Antigüedad? The Populist Logic on the Environment provides a framework that draws from populism's essence to explain populist politicians'approaches to the environment.Over the past few decades, populism has spread across the world – particularly in Europe, but also notably in the US, South America, and Asia. Its essential features – especially its ideological'thinness'– mean that we can observe considerable variations across populists in their environmental stances. This holds across the political spectrum from the left to the right, despite the traditional tendency of right-wing parties to be skeptical of pro-environmental positions and of left-wing parties to subscribe to them. Regardless of variations, however, ‘true populists'can be expected to consistently anchor environmental stances in people-centrism and anti-elitism – in ways linked to additional party-specific factors. This book systematizes analytically what the literature observes, corrects some of its empirical limitations, and allows for reflection on the commitment by any one populist party to the environment. Much attention has been focused on how states produce knowledge about the people they govern; far less has been written about those aspects of society that states choose to keep obscure. This book makes an original contribution to understanding state ignorance by focusing on one of the most complex and contested social issues of our day: the governance of irregular migrants. Tracing the evolution of state monitoring and control of irregular migrants from the 1960s to the present day across France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the authors develop a theory of'state ignorance', setting out three complementary ways of understanding such oversights: ignorance as omission, ignorance as strategy, and ignorance as ascription. The findings upend dominant approaches, which tend to assume that states are preoccupied with producing knowledge about their populations, and argues that states have actually been keen to sustain ignorance about their unauthorised populations.

The European question has divided the Labour Party and the progressive left for over 50 years. The contemporary left-wing antithesis to the EU harks back to Bennite anti-marketeer narratives: a neoliberal EU undermines the potential for national progressive policies in relation to labour markets, state intervention and finance. However, many make the case that the EU's four freedoms support a progressive politics: the single market project embeds social and workers'rights, challenges member state support for large corporate interests and facilitates free movement for EU citizens. There is, in short, a progressive dilemma for the British left in relation to the European issue, which the authors navigate through the analysis of four policy issues that arose during the Brexit debate and remain significant for British politics and for the left in particular: free trade and the single market, industrial policy and state aid, free movement of persons and finance. Crucially, they point to a route beyond this dilemma for both Europe and the British left.
