The second edition of this book (updated to February 24, 2024) presents a comprehensive evaluation of the strategy implemented by China to manage its modernization process. The author evaluates to what extent the economy has been developed, whether the imbalances due to the priority given to economic development have been corrected, and whether the improvements of science and technology have allowed China to develop world class high-tech sectors and a modern defence. Clearly, the end of the XX Century saw the fulfilment of Zhou En Lai ‘four modernizations', i.e. the acquisition of power resources that fulfilled Mao's proud 1949 statement: ‘we stood up', thereby projecting China into the international arena as a re-emerging world power. The author insists on the fundamental difference between American and Chinese ideologies as the main drivers of their foreign policy, i.e., the extreme rigidity of the former compared to the remarkable flexibility and adaptability of the latter. He further explains the consequences of the increasingly aggressive American foreign policy, i.e. the US pretence to act as the leader of the existential struggle between ‘democracy and dictatorship'. This posture reached its apex during the Ukrainian and the Middle East crises, that unveiled the irreversible decline of the West, and have become two formidable accelerators of the transition from the unipolar world ‘América made'to the multipolar world promoted by China, Russia and the BRICS.

Scholarship on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) has often portrayed mining regions as ‘informal'zones that suffer from environmental degradation problems. Water pollution and degraded landscapes, for example, have long been noted as the inevitable consequence of the operations of ASM. Such insistence on the institutional absences of ASM zones has dovetailed with a lack of academic attention to some of the ‘golden'mining practices taking place there. Thus, this work seeks to (re)examine the topic of ‘development'in ASM. The findings suggest that small-scale miners, contrary to popular perception, could be caretakers of the environment. In addition, emphasizing how the dynamic interplay between resources and environmental demands may come to support public policy, the findings illustrate, contrary to the dominant narrative, how the activities of small-scale mining operators can engender a win-win situation for both mining companies and local mining communities.

This edited book is written by six authors from Asia and Africa. The individual authors focus on their own country's case or cases that they have been working on. The book features local conflicts in six countries in Asia and Africa and identifies how the local conflicts are affected by the forces of globalization. Cases include Nigeria's oil-related conflicts, the Democratic Republic of Congo's timber conflicts, continuing instability in Mozanbique, Thailand's conflict with regard to AIDS medicine, Myanmar's local conflicts after its reforms, and the Afghanistan's conflicts over minerals. From these diverse case studies, the book examines how globalization and international politics affect local politics and conflicts, and vice versa. Even seemingly internal conflicts are shown to be significantly influenced by globalization forces and to create new dynamism in local politics.
