Neue Einblicke und Einsichten in das Werk von Peter Rühmkorf.'Wo ich gelernt habe'ist der Titel einer Rede, die Peter Rühmkorf 1999 als Poetik-Dozent an der Universität Göttingen hielt. Kein anderer deutschsprachiger Schriftsteller des 20. Jahrhunderts stand bewusster und kundiger in der Tradition deutschsprachiger Dichtung, schrieb darüber und lebte in und mit ihr. Die Göttinger Rede ist der programmatische Ausgangspunkt für die Fragestellung, mit der sich dieser Band beschäftigt: Peter Rühmkorfs Verhältnis zur Tradition. Dargestellt wird u. a. Rühmkorfs Rezeption von Gottfried Benn, Carl Michael Bellman, Walt Whitman, Arno Schmidt und Justinus Kerner. Weitere Beiträge widmen sich dem Einfluss von Bertolt Brecht und Wolfgang Borchert auf Rühmkorfs Dramatik und seine'Jazz & Lyrik'-Auftritte, seiner Romantikrezeption, der Bedeutung mittelalterlicher Minnesang-Tradition, der Funktionsweise von Verweltlichung in Rühmkorfs religiöser Bildsprache sowie der Übernahme von frühexpressionistischen Inszenierungsgesten in der Zeitschrift'Zwischen den Kriegen'. Peter Rühmkorf (1929 -2008) war einer der herausragenden deutschsprachigen Schriftsteller des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er arbeitete zudem als Lektor für den Rowohlt Verlag und war Gastprofessor an deutschen, US-amerikanischen und britischen Universitäten. Die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung nannte ihn den bedeutendsten deutschen Lyriker der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts.

The American poet and essayist Louise Imogen Guiney was a prominent figure of the Boston literary circle of her day. The reasons for this retraction include the serious doubts that have been raised in the years following the publication of this edited volume about the provenance of the newest Sappho papyri (P. Sapph. Obbink and P GC. inv.105). In The Newest Sappho Anton Bierl and André Lardinois have edited 21 papers of world-renowned Sappho scholars dealing with the new papyrus fragments of Sappho that were published in 2014. This set of papyrus fragments, the greatest find of Sappho fragments since the beginning of the 20th century, provides significant new readings and additions to five previously known songs of Sappho (frs. 5, 9, 16, 17 and 18), as well as the remains of four previously unknown songs, including the new Brothers Song and the Kypris Song. The contributors discuss the content of these poems as well as the consequence they have for our understanding of Sappho's life and work.

The definitive collection of works by one of the Tang Dynasty's most eccentric (and badly-behaved) poets, now back in print for the first time in decades.Li He is the bad-boy poet of the late Tang dynasty. He began writing at the age of seven and died at twenty-six from alcoholism or, according to a later commentator, “sexual dissipation,” or both. An obscure and unsuccessful relative of the imperial family, he would set out at dawn on horseback, pause, write a poem, and toss the paper away. A servant boy followed him to collect these scraps in a tapestry bag. Long considered far too extravagant and weird for Chinese taste, Li He was virtually excluded from the poetic canon until the mid-twentieth century. Today, as the translator and scholar Anne M. Birrell, writes, “Of all the Tang poets, even of all Chinese poets, he best speaks for our disconcerting times.” Modern critics have compared him to Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Keats, and Trakl. The Collected Poems of Li He is the only comprehensive selection of his surviving work (most of his poems were reputedly burned by his cousin after his death, for the honor of the family), rendered here in crystalline translations by the noted scholar J. D. Frodsham.

This volume contains a collection of papers by an international team of scholars covering the subject of literary character in Roman poetry. The list of authors discussed in the book includes the most prominent poets of Augustan and Imperial period like Horace, Vergil, Propertius, Ovid, Lucan and an epigrammatist of the 6th century A.D., Maximianus Etruscus. Problems treated vary from theoretical through poetical to historical questions. Different points of view presented in the book give a deep insight into modern discussion on both theory and practice of literary character in ancient Roman literary tradition.

This volume is born out of two years of academic presentations on laments in the Biblical Hebrew Poetry Section at the Society of Biblical Literature (2006-2007). Aphrodite's famous ribbon known as the cestus, the irresistible love charm that she loaned to Hera in the Iliad, was, thanks to a fruitful early misreading, transformed by ancient, medieval, and Renaissance authors into a symbol of honorable feminine chastity: in Maurice Scève's 1560 Microcosme, an epic rewriting of Genesis, Eve first appears before an astonished Adam wearing the virginal cestus as a symbolic guarantee of her sexual innocence. This book traces the history of this curious development from Homer to the end of the sixteenth century in France. Through analyses of both famous and little-known texts, it illustrates the complexity and fecund liberty of Homeric reception.

The book examines the myth of Hercules and Omphale/Iole which became an important topic in the visual arts in the period 1500–1800. It offers an analysis of the iconography from the perspective of the history of emotions, classical and Neo-Latin philology, reception studies, and gender studies. The early modern inventions of the myth excel in a skilful display of mixed and compound emotions, such as the male character's psychopathology, and of the theatrical performance of emotions by the female character.

This edition of Nawāḍir al-Ayk fī Nawādir al-Nayk by the Islamic scholar Jalāl al-Dīn al-Suyūṭī, which has often sparked controversy in scholarly and popular circles alike, is very important from several aspects. It is not only the first scholarly edition of popular erotic works written by or attributed to al-Suyūṭī, but also an in-depth study of these works and some of their sources that most of which are understudied. The genre of premodern Arabic erotic literature has long been neglected by serious scholars and many of the existing works are flawed, but now it is rapidly expanding, and there is a critical need of reliable editions and studies. Dalā'il al-Nubuwwa literature that is centered on narratives from the Prophet Muḥammad's life has most commonly been viewed, or even dismissed, as the product of popular veneration. Building extensive research on biographical and bibliographical sources, this book demonstrates that Dalā'il al-Nubuwwa literature emerged among the circles of early ḥadīth scholars of the late 2nd/8th century. By analyzing extant texts of Dalā'il al-Nubuwwa regarding their sources, structures, methodological approaches, and selection of contents, it showcases that these works were part of epistemological discourses on prophecy that transcended religious boundaries as well as the dividing lines between various Muslim scholarly disciplines.

The Latin Poems of Manilius Cabacius Rallus of Sparta presents the poetic oeuvre of a forgotten poet of Renaissance Rome. A Greek by birth, Manilius Cabacius Rallus (c. 1447–c. 1523) spent most of his life far from his motherland, unable to return. For more than a millennium, Kālidāsa's poem “Lineage of the Raghus” (Raghuvaṃśa) has been acknowledged as one of the masterpieces of Sanskrit literature. Thousands of manuscripts transmit it, and dozens of pre-modern commentaries expound the text. This is the second volume (out of three) of the earliest surviving commentary, that of the tenth-century Kashmirian Vallabhadeva. The text that he had before him of Kālidāsa's poems differs in many places from that printed in other editions, which generally follow the readings of the commentator Mallinātha, who wrote four centuries later. Notes discuss the text and report the readings of three other hitherto unpublished commentaries that predate Mallinātha, namely those of Śrīnātha, Vaidyaśrīgarbha and Dakṣiṇāvartanātha.

This collection of papers follows on from a conference, held in Sherborne in June 2005, marking the thirteen-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the bishopric by Aldhelm of Malmesbury. This volume looks at the work of Aldhelm and the foundation of the see of Sherborne in the wider context of his career and his world. Scholarship has tended to assume that Luther was uninterested in the Greek and Latin classics, given his promotion of the German vernacular and his polemic against the reliance upon Aristotle in theology. But as Athens and Wittenberg demonstrates, Luther was shaped by the classical education he had received and integrated it into his writings. He could quote Epicurean poetry to non-Epicurean ends; he could employ Aristotelian logic to prove the limits of philosophy's role in theology. This volume explores how Luther and early Protestantism, especially Lutheranism, continued to draw from the classics in their quest to reform the church. Ovid's Tragic Heroines expands our understanding of Ovid's incorporation of Greek generic codes and the tragic heroines, Phaedra and Medea, while offering a new perspective on the Roman poet's persistent interest in these two characters and their paradigms. Ovid presents these two Attic tragic heroines as symbols of different passions that are defined by the specific combination of their gender and generic provenance. Their failure to be understood and their subsequent punishment are constructed as the result of their female'nature,'and are generically marked as'tragic.'Ovid's masculine poetic voice, by contrast, is given free rein to oscillate and play with poetic possibilities. Jessica A. Westerhold focuses on select passages from the poems Ars Amatoria, Heroides, and Metamorphoses. Building on existing scholarship, she analyzes the dynamic nature of generic categories and codes in Ovid's poetry, especially the interplay of elegy and epic. Further, her analysis of Ovid's reception applies the idea of the abject to elucidate Ovid's process of constructing gender and genre in his poetry. Ovid's Tragic Heroines incorporates established theories of the performativity of sex, gender, and kinship roles to understand the continued maintenance of the normative and abject subject positions Ovid's poetry creates. The resulting analysis reveals how Ovid's Phaedras and Medeas offer alternatives both to traditional gender roles and to material appropriate to a poem's genre, ultimately using the tragic code to introduce a new perspective to epic and elegy.
