En los últimos años, debido a la gran influencia de las redes sociales y empujados por la crisis del COVID-19, los movimientos negacionistas, las pseudociencias y diversas actitudes anticientíficas han cobrado una visibilidad insólita. Para contrarrestar las críticas que provienen desde estos sectores, Antonio Diéguez se propone una defensa de la ciencia alejada de los tópicos habituales, que se han consolidado en una imagen poco acorde con el modo en que hoy se practica la investigación y que suele provenir de ideas filosóficas que, aunque hayan sido útiles en el pasado, conviene revisar. This open access book addresses the epistemological and ontological significance as well as the scope of new mechanism. In particular, this book addresses the issues of what is'new'about new mechanism, the epistemological and ontological reasons underlying the adoption of mechanistic instead of other modelling strategies as well as the possibility of mechanistic explanation to accommodate a non-trivial notion of emergence. Arguably, new mechanism has been particularly successful in making sense of scientific practice in the molecular life sciences. But what about other sciences? This book enlarges the context of analysis, addressing the issue of the putative compatibility between the current ways of conceiving new mechanism and actual scientific practices in quantum physics, chemistry, biochemistry, developmental biology and the cognitive sciences.

This book addresses the urgent need for a large and systematic analysis of current interdisciplinary (ID) research and practice. It demonstrates how ID is essentially a cognitive phenomenon, something different from the frivolous and inconsequential attempt of trying to overcome the disciplinary competencies and exigencies. By ID, the authors show that it is a manifestation of the transversal rationality that underlies current scientific activity. It is the very progress of specialized disciplines that requires interdisciplinary new research practices and new forms of articulation between domains, something that has a strong impact on the traditional disciplinary structure of scientific and educational institutions. Divided into two parts, the book presents a conceptual framework as well as several case studies on ID practices. The book aims at covering three main themes. It contributes to the stabilization of ID meaning and characterizes the main ID theorizations whichhave been proposed until now. It builds an innovative and broad understanding of the several ID determinations as an essentially cognitive phenomenon and of its institutional implications at the level of disciplinary structures and curricular organization. Finally, it distinguishes and maps the diversity of ID procedures and practices which are being used and tested by contemporary scientific and educational institutions. This edited volume presents papers on this alternative philosophy of biology that could be called “continental philosophy of biology,” and the variety of positions and solutions that it has spawned. In doing so, it contributes to debates in the history and philosophy of science and the history of philosophy of science, as well as to the craving for ‘history'and/or ‘theory'in the theoretical biological disciplines. In addition, however, it also provides inspiration for a broader image of philosophy of biology, in which these traditional issues may have a place. The volume devotes specific attention to the work of Georges Canguilhem, which is central to this alternative tradition of “continental philosophy of biology”. This is the first collection on Georges Canguilhem and the Continental tradition in philosophy of biology. This text provides an extensive exploration of the relationship between the thought of Otto Neurath and Rudolf Carnap, providing a new argument for the complementarity of their mature philosophies as part of a collaborative metatheory of science. In arguing that both Neurath and Carnap must be interpreted as proponents of epistemological naturalism, and that their naturalisms rest on shared philosophical ground, it is also demonstrated that the boundaries and possibilities for epistemological naturalism are not as restrictive as Quinean orthodoxy has previously suggested. Both building on and challenging the scholarship of the past four decades, this naturalist reading of Carnap also provides a new interpretation of Carnap's conception of analyticity, allowing for a refutation of the Quinean argument for the incompatibility of naturalism and the analytic/synthetic distinction. This highly interdisciplinary book, covering more than six fields, from philosophy and sciences all the way up to the humanities and with contributions from eminent authors, addresses the interplay between content and context, reductionism and holism and their meeting point: the notion of emergence. Much of today's science is reductionist (bottom-up); in other words, behaviour on one level is explained by reducing it to components on a lower level. Chemistry is reduced to atoms, ecosystems are explained in terms of DNA and proteins, etc. This approach fails quickly since we can't cannot extrapolate to the properties of atoms solely from Schrödinger's equation, nor figure out protein folding from an amino acid sequence or obtain the phenotype of an organism from its genotype. An alternative approach to this is holism (top-down). Consider an ecosystem or an organism as a whole: seek patterns on the same scale. Model a galaxy not as 400 billion-point masses (stars) but as an object inits own right with its own properties (spiral, elliptic). Or a hurricane as a structured form of moist air and water vapour. Reductionism is largely about content, whereas holistic models are more attuned to context. Reductionism (content) and holism (context) are not opposing philosophies — in fact, they work best in tandem. Die Arbeit setzt die 1978 von L.-M. Alisch und L. Rössner gemeinsam begonnene und dann weit vorangetriebene Forschung zu Technologischen Theorien in der Erziehungswissenschaft fort. Inzwischen erfreuen sich die Resultate dieser Forschung der Beachtung durch Fachkollegen, aber auch durch Interessierte in den Bereichen Psychologie, Sozialpsychologie, Soziologie und Philosophie. Neben der technologischen Fragestellung greift die Arbeit auch die der verhaltens- und handlungstheoretischen Fundierung Technologischer Theorien auf. Nachdem eine Zeitlang von einer Krisensituation im Hinblick auf das Selbstverständnis der Pädagogik gesprochen worden ist, neigt man neuerdings dazu, dies als »Krisenlamento« zurückzuweisen. Die Pädagogik hatte sich bis gegen Ende der 70er Jahre als praxisorientierte, manchmal auch technologische Wissenschaft verstanden und dann selbst mit der Frage nach ihrer praktischen Relevanz konfrontiert. Seitdem wird dem Urteil, die Pädagogik hätte im Anschluß an die stürmische Phase ihrer im Zuge der Bildungsreform stattgehabten Expansion die ihr gebotene wissenschaftliche Chance verpaßt und die Behauptung ihrer praktischen Relevanz nicht eingelöst, mit unterschiedlichen Vorschlägen zur Neuorientierung entgegengetreten. Die Vorschläge beziehen sich dabei überwiegend auf die Reflexion des Theorie-Praxis-Bezuges. Während einerseits das Problem auf das Lancieren des wissenschaftlichen Wissens in die Praxis reduziert wird, wird es andererseits in inadäquater Methodologie lokalisiert. Die Vorschläge zur Überwindung mangelnder Praxisrelevanz der Erziehungswissenschaft deuten an, daß man eher einer tatsächlich vorliegenden Krisensituation noch nicht Herr geworden ist, als daß man es nur mit einem zu überwindenden Lamento zu tun hat. In der Arbeit wird gezeigt, daß die Krisensituation tief in den Grundlagen der Erziehungswissenschaft wurzelt und zunächst nur durch eine Grundlagenanalyse aufgedeckt und überwunden werden kann. Dabei wird die Erziehungswissenschaft als technologische Disziplin aufgefaßt, der im Zuge modernster Wissenschaftsentwicklungen zwar hohe Bedeutung zukommt, der aber auch eine Reihe von Herausforderungen entgegentritt.

Trasegar por la complejidad requiere un pensamiento abierto y flexible que permita comprenderla: el pensamiento complejo. Existen varios caminos para llegar a él. El pensamiento es una visión que ayuda en la comprensión de las situaciones complejas; lo plantea Edgar Morin respecto del estudio de los sistemas sociales, en los que el método científico no encuadra por completo pues precisa que el todo, para su análisis, sea dividido en partes, y que estas sean analizadas independientemente. El pensamiento complejo es una visión que induce a seguir diferentes caminos aceptando las posibles incertidumbres, emergencias, dinámicas y contradicciones y considerándo- las para tener resultados globales. Su aplicabilidad varía de un entorno a otro y de una situación a otra, ya que, aunque la organización sea similar, existen elementos que determinan cuál es el camino más adecuado para comprender los distintos problemas.

Der Autor liefert eine Erörterung zentraler rechtsphilosophischer Fragestellungen auf Grundlage der Erkenntnisse der von Carl Gustav Jung begründeten Analytischen Psychologie und der von ihm vertretenen »erneuerten Ethik«. Insbesondere die Archetypenlehre, die das zentrale Element des Jungschen Werkes darstellt, verspricht, einen »dritten Weg« jenseits von Naturrecht und Positivismus, im Sinne eines im Unbewußten verankerten und tradierten Rechtsempfindens, zu eröffnen. Da C. G. This book provides both an introduction to the philosophy of scientific modeling and a contribution to the discussion and clarification of two recent philosophical conceptions of models: artifactualism and fictionalism. These can be viewed as different stances concerning the standard representationalist account of scientific models. By better understanding these two alternative views, readers will gain a deeper insight into what a model is as well as how models function in different sciences.Fictionalism has been a traditional epistemological stance related to antirealist construals of laws and theories, such as instrumentalism and inferentialism. By contrast, the more recent fictional view of models holds that scientific models must be conceived of as the same kind of entities as literary characters and places. This approach is essentially an answer to the ontological question concerning the nature of models, which in principle is not incompatible with a representationalistaccount of the function of models. The artifactual view of models is an approach according to which scientific models are epistemic artifacts, whose main function is not to represent the phenomena but rather to provide epistemic access to them. It can be conceived of as a non-representationalist and pragmatic account of modeling, which does not intend to focus on the ontology of models but rather on the ways they are built and used for different purposes. The different essays address questions such as the artifactual view of idealization, the use of information theory to elucidate the concepts of abstraction and idealization, the deidealization of models, the nature of scientific fictions, the structural account of representation and the ontological status of structures, the role of surrogative reasoning with models, and the use of models for explaining and predicting physical phenomena.

The Integration of Knowledge explores a theory of human knowledge through a model of rationality combined with some fundamental logical, mathematical, physical and neuroscientific considerations. Sind die Wirtschaftswissenschaften eine Wissenschaft? Benedikt Fait stellt sich auf Grundlage kausaltheoretischer Überlegungen dieser Sichtweise entgegen und kommt zu einem überraschenden Ergebnis.Ziel des Buches ist die Anwendung der zurzeit viel diskutierten interventionistischen Kausaltheorie (James Woodward) auf die Ökonomik. Diese Anwendung kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass Kausalurteile in der Ökonomik nur unzureichend zu begründen sind. La aparición de anomalías como resultado de un abrumador aumento de los datos debido a la irrupción de innovaciones en los instrumentos tecnológicos de detección produce un aumento drástico de la complejidad necesaria para dar cuenta de los fenómenos de cierta parte de la naturaleza conocidos hasta el momento –incluyendo las novedades inesperadas– y coloca a la teoría vigente en una situación de fragilidad en la que deben realizarse ajustes en sus herramientas de cálculo so pena de ser abandonada en favor de otras teorías o modelos que afronten la situación exitosamente y con un coste de menor complejidad. Wegen der vermeintlichen Schwierigkeiten bei der Erklärung der Entstehung und des Wandels von Institutionen wird vielfach die Verwendung eines breiteren handlungstheoretischen Ansatzes gefordert. Ein Blick hinter die Kulissen offenbart aber, daß die Forderung häufig auf unwissenschaftlichen und erkenntnistheoretisch nicht haltbaren Positionen beruht: nämlich auf induktivistischen. In der Arbeit wird auf Grundlage der Wissenschafts- und Erkenntnistheorie Poppers dagegen ein deduktiv-nomologischer Weg beschritten. Das Ergebnis ist eine neue Propensitätstheorie von Institutionen. Deren zentrales Element ist die propensitätstheoretische Sichtweise von Wahrscheinlichkeiten, die eine objektive Interpretation des erkenntnistheoretischen Kerns einer Institution, ihre Erwartungskomponente, ermöglicht und die induktivistische »Erklärung« mittels Wiederholungen ersetzt. Zudem löst dies das Erklärungsproblem der Glaubwürdigkeit, denn das Vertrauen in Institutionen kann als vernünftig und rational erklärt werden.

In this first volume of The Sylvan Jungle, the editors present a scholarly edition of the first chapter,'Exploring Meinong's Jungle,'of Richard Routley's 1000-plus page book, Exploring Meinong's Jungle and Beyond. Going against the Quinean orthodoxy, Routley's aim was to support Meinong's idea that we can truthfully refer to non-existent and even impossible objects, like Superman, unicorns and the (infamous) round-square cupola on Berkeley College. The tools of non-classical logic at Routley's disposal enabled him to update Meinong's project for a new generation.This volume begins with an Introduction from Dominic Hyde, “The ‘Jungle Book'in Context,” an essay that situates Exploring Meinong's Jungle and Beyond historically. We provide the original Preface by Routley, followed by Chapter 1: “Exploring Meinong's Jungle and Beyond.” In Chapter 2, Nicholas Griffin argues that Sylvan's project was insufficiently radical with his essay, “Why the Original Theory of Items Didn't (Quite) Go Far Enough.” Sylvan revisits his position from this time in Chapter 3, with his article, “Re-Exploring Item-Theory.” Filippo Casati, who has worked in the Routley Archives then takes up the question of the future of Sylvan's research program in his essay, “The Future Perfect of Exploring Meinong's Jungle.”Iconic and iconoclastic Australian philosopher Richard Routley (né Sylvan) published Exploring Meinong's Jungle and Beyond in 1980. This work has fallen out of print, yet without great fanfare it has influenced two generations of philosophers and logicians.

Podejmowane tu problemy nie wyczerpują – rzecz jasna – wszystkich ważnych zagadnień ontologicznych (chociaż większości chyba „dotykają”); z pewnością jednak są to problemy – jak na filozofię pierwszą przystało – fundamentalne. This second volume continues Richard Routley's explorations of an improved Meinongian account of non-referring and intensional discourse (including joint work with Val Routley, later Val Plumwood). It focuses on the essays 2 through 7 of the original monograph, Exploring Meinong's Jungle and Beyond, following on from the material of the first volume and explores its implications of the Noneist position. Pourquoi l'activité scientifique est-elle conflictuelle?Brisant l'image idéale de la science consensuelle, les controverses scientifiques sont aujourd'hui devenues un sujet privilégié de la sociologie et de l'histoire des sciences. Elles sont par ailleurs impliquées au cœur des débats sur les méthodes des sciences sociales. Contemporary philosophy of science analyzes psychology as a science with special features, because this discipline includes some specific philosophical problems – descriptive and normative, structural and dynamic. Some of these are particularly relevant both theoretically (casual explanation) and practically (the configuration of the psychological subject and its relations with psychiatry). Two central aspects in this book are the role of causality, especially conceived as intervention or manipulation, and the characterization of the psychological subject. This requires a clarification of scientific explanations in terms of causality in psychology, because characterizations of causality are quite different in epistemological and ontological terms. One of the most influential views is James Woodward's approach to causality as intervention, which entails an analysis of its characteristics, new elements and limits. This means taking into account the structural and dynamic aspects included in causal cognition and psychological explanations. Psychology seen as special science also requires us to consider the scientific status of psychology and the psychological subject, which leads to limits of naturalism in psychology.

The present book is a book on epistemology with the special and new focus on the relation of different types of knowledge and a differentiated comparison to both scientific and religious belief. The present book distinguishes seven types of knowledge and compares them with both scientific and religious belief. The ususal view is that scientific and religious belief have nothing or not much in common. Although there are important differences, in contradistinction to this widespread view it is shown that there are also many similarities between them. There are similarities concerning the reasons for belief, with respect to the action of believing, concerning a similar voluntary component, or even concerning properties of the content of belief. A detailed discussion of many types of knowledge and a differentiated comparison to scientific and religious belief is an important new contribution to the scientific literature in epistemology.

Offering an overall insight into the French tradition of philosophy of technology, this volume is meant to make French-speaking contributions more accessible to the international philosophical community. The first section, “Negotiating a Cultural Heritage,” presents a number of leading 20th century philosophical figures (from Bergson and Canguilhem to Simondon, Dagognet or Ellul) and intellectual movements (from Personalism to French Cybernetics and political ecology) that help shape philosophy of technology in the Francophone area, and feed into contemporary debates (ecology of technology, politics of technology, game studies). In spite of a powerful tradition, more than two thousand years old, that in a valid argument the premises must be relevant to the conclusion, twentieth-century logicians neglected the concept of relevance until the publication of Volume I of this monumental work. In Using Knowledge: On the Rationality of Science, Technology, and Medicine Ingemar Nordin analyses the philosophical problems and nature of science, technology, and medicine. The main focus of the book is on the structure and dynamics of technological change. What implications do the goals of technology have for its rationality? How can the pragmatic problem of induction be solved within a fallibilistic and skeptical context? Nordin shows that the social context is of vital importance for the goal of technology (usefulness) and its rational development, with important consequences for how to design a techno policy in society. A rational technological development needs technological pluralism since knowledge of what is useful is scattered among millions of users.

This monograph offers a fresh perspective on the applicability of mathematics in science. Chapters cover: mathematics as a formal science, mathematical ontology: what does it mean to exist, mathematical structures: what are they and how do we know them, how different layers of mathematical structuring relate to each other and to perceptual structures, and how to use mathematics to find out how the world is.The book simultaneously develops along two lines, both inspired and enlightened by Edmund Husserl's phenomenological philosophy. One line leads to the establishmentof a particular version of mathematical structuralism, free of “naturalist” and empiricist bias. The other leads to a logical-epistemological explanation and justification of the applicability of mathematics carried out within a unique structuralist perspective. This second line points to the “unreasonable” effectiveness of mathematics in physics as a means of representation, a tool, and a source of not always logically justified but useful and effective heuristic strategies.
