This volume explores illusionism as a much larger phenomenon than optical illusion, magic shows, or special effects, as a vital part of how we perceive, process, and shape the world in which we live. Considering different cultural practices characterized by illusionism, this book suggests a new approach to illusion via media theory. Each of the chapters analyses a specific kind of illusionistic practice and the concept of illusionism it entails in a given context, including philosophy, perception and cognitive theory, performance magic, occultism, optics, physiology, early cinema, cartomancy, spiritualism, architecture, shamanic rituals, and theoretical physics, to show the diversity of shapes that illusionism and illusions can take. The book provides detailed analyses of illusions within performance and ritual magic, philosophy, art history and psychology as well as a first approach to the study of illusions outside of these established fields. It aims to find ways of identifying and analysing a wider range of illusions in the humanities. In der Geschichte der Philosophie waren Bilder oft dem Verdacht des Lügens ausgesetzt. Dieser Vorwurf unterstellt nicht, dass jemand beim Gebrauch eines Bildes die Unwahrheit sagt, sondern dass die Bilder selbst agieren. Wenn sie lügen können, können sie dann auch die Wahrheit sagen? Viele Kulturtechniken unterstellen eine Wahrheitsfähigkeit der Bilder – ihr Potential der Verifi zierung und Bezeugung. In Bildern wird etwas anschaulich, auf das sich visuelle Formen der Wahrheitsgewinnung stützen können. Das vorliegende Buch versucht eine systematische Bestimmung dieser »pikturalen Evidenz«, auf der die Wahrheitsfähigkeit der Bilder beruht: Bilder »sagen« die Wahrheit nicht, aber sie können Sachverhalte richtig, wahrhaftig, detailreich und überprüfbar präsentieren. Vor allem können sie Aspekte der Wirklichkeit vor Augen stellen, die außerhalb des pikturalen Objekts nicht wahrnehmbar sind. Um diese Wahrheitsfähigkeit präzise zu erfassen, gilt es deshalb, die gemeinsamen Gestaltungseigenschaften von Zeichnungen, Gemälden, Standbildern, Fotos, Filmen etc., sowie ihre Funktionen und Wirkungsweisen ins Zentrum der Analyse zu stellen. Dann zeigt sich, dass die pikturale Evidenz weniger aus der Bezugnahme auf ein Vorbild herrührt, noch aus den ästhetischen Qualitäten der Abbildung, sondern vor allem aus einer Anschaulichkeit, die nur das Bild als ein gestaltetes Ding eröffnet.

Although current debates in epistemology and philosophy of mind show a renewed interest in perceptual illusions, there is no systematic work in the philosophy of perception and in the psychology of perception with respect to the concept of illusion and the relation between illusion and error. This book aims to fill that gap.
