The twentieth century is the period during which the history of Greek mathematics reached its greatest acme. Indeed, it is by no means exaggerated to say that Greek mathematics represents the unique field from the wider domain of the general history of science which was included in the research agenda of so many and so distinguished scholars, from so varied scientific communities (historians of science, historians of philosophy, mathematicians, philologists, philosophers of science, archeologists etc.), while new scholarship of the highest quality continues to be produced. This volume includes 19 classic papers on the history of Greek mathematics that were published during the entire 20th century and affected significantly the state of the art of this field. It is divided into six self-contained sections, each one with its own editor, who had the responsibility for the selection of the papers that are republished in the section, and who wrote the introduction of the section. It constitutes a kind of a Reader book which is today, one century after the first publications of Tannery, Zeuthen, Heath and the other outstanding figures of the end of the 19th and the beg- ning of 20th century, rather timely in many respects.

FOREWORD This book came about as a result of two events: an exhibition on the Solvay Physics Councils, held in Brussels in May 1995, and a conference on the same theme which took place at the Free University of Brussels (ULB) on May 1Oth 1995. A book was published in French in conjunction with the exhibition, and much of the present publication is taken from that book. In addition, we have included some of the papers presented at the conference, as we believe they add a further dimension to the history of the Councils. The French term, Conseil Solvay, is usually translated into English as Solvay Conference or Congress. We have elected to retain the particular connotations of the French word Conseil by translating it instead as Council. The Councils were, after all, no ordinary conferences. Only a limited number of participants was invited, hand picked by a scientific committee, who for five to six days took an active part in the sessions and the long discussions that followed. Each day, one or two physicists would present a paper on a subject that had been chosen by the committee to fit in with the overall theme of the Council. The word Conseil expressly implies the gathering of an elite to engage in debate.

'Scientists other than quantum physicists often fail to comprehend the enormity of the conceptual change wrought by quantum theory in our basic conception of the nature of matter,'writes Henry Stapp. Stapp is a leading quantum physicist who has given particularly careful thought to the implications of the theory that lies at the heart of modern physics. In this book, which contains several of his key papers as well as new material, he focuses on the problem of consciousness and explains how quantum mechanics allows causally effective conscious thought to be combined in a natural way with the physical brain made of neurons and atoms. The book is divided into four sections. The first consists of an extended introduction. Key foundational and somewhat more technical papers are included in the second part, together with a clear exposition of the'orthodox'interpretation of quantum mechanics. The third part addresses, in a non-technical fashion, the implications of the theory for some of the most profound questions that mankind has contemplated: How does the world come to be just what it is and not something else? How should humans view themselves in a quantum universe? What will be the impact on society of the revised scientific image of the nature of man? The final part contains a mathematical appendix for the specialist and a glossary of important terms and ideas for the interested layman. This new edition has been updated and extended to address recent debates about consciousness.

The conference provided a well blended program to facilitate the com­ munications between academia and the industry, and to bridge the mathe­ matical sciences, engineering, information theory, and communication com­ munities. The emphases were on design and analysis of computationally efficient algorithms to better understand the behavior and to control the wireless telecommunication networks. As an achieve, this volume presents some of the highlights of the conference, and collects papers covering a broad spectrum of topics. All papers have been reviewed.

Special functions are pervasive in all fields of science and industry. The most well-known application areas are in physics, engineering, chemistry, computer science and statistics. Because of their importance, several books and websites (see for instance http: functions.wolfram.com) and a large collection of papers have been devoted to these functions. Of the standard work on the subject, the Handbook of mathematical functions with formulas, graphs and mathematical tables edited by Milton Abramowitz and Irene Stegun, the American National Institute of Standards claims to have sold over 700 000 copies! But so far no project has been devoted to the systematic study of continued fraction representations for these functions. This handbook is the result of such an endeavour. We emphasise that only 10% of the continued fractions contained in this book, can also be found in the Abramowitz and Stegun project or at the Wolfram website!

This important new study provides a critical analysis of the foreign policies conducted during the first two terms of Tony Blair's government. It focuses upon the government's key foreign policy commitments; three of its most important international relationships (with the US, the European Union, and Africa); and how Blair's government dealt with five fundamental policy issues (political economy, defence, international development, intervention, and Iraq). It argues that throughout this period Labour's foreign policies attempted to paper over some important contradictions.

Produced water contributes to the largest volume waste stream associated with oil and gas (O&G) exploration and production (E&P) operations. It is usually a complex mixture of inorganics and organics that is formed underground and brought to the surface during O&G production. Traditionally, produced water has been considered as a waste to the O&G industry. The conventional management strategies include disposal (typically by injection into depleted wells or permitted disposal wells), recycle (direct reuse within the E&P operation), and reuse (treatment and reuse offsite for food crop irrigation, livestock watering or industrial use). The O&G industry is going through a paradigm shift, where scarcity of water, economics of water management, declining oil costs, and increasing focus on environmental and ecological stewardship are shifting the focus toward integrated water management in E&P operations. Water is no longer a problem to be delegated to a third-party disposal or treatment vendor, but is becoming a cornerstone of O&G production. In this review, we summarize produced water characteristics, regulations and management options, produced water treatment fundamentals, and a detailed discussion of process equipment and advantages/disadvantages of currently available treatment processes. These results in peer-reviewed publications could provide a guide for the selection of appropriate technologies based on the desired application. Major research efforts in the future could focus on the optimization of current technologies and use of combined treatment processes of produced water in order to comply with reuse and discharge limits, under more stringent environmental regulations.

Over the past half century, reverse osmosis (RO) has grown from a nascent niche technology into the most versatile and effective desalination and advanced water treatment technology available. However, there remain certain challenges for improving the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of RO desalination plants in various applications. In low-pressure RO applications, both capital (CAPEX) and operating (OPEX) costs are largely influenced by product water recovery, which is typically limited by mineral scale formation. In seawater applications, recovery tends to be limited by the salinity limits on brine discharge and cost is dominated by energy demand. The combination of water scarcity and sustainability imperatives, in many locations, is driving system designs towards minimal and zero liquid discharge (M/ZLD) for inland brackish water, municipal and industrial wastewaters, and even seawater desalination. Herein, we review the basic principles of RO processes, the state-of-the-art for RO membranes, modules and system designs as well as methods for concentrating and treating brines to achieve MLD/ZLD, resource recovery and renewable energy powered desalination systems. Throughout, we provide examples of installations employing conventional and some novel approaches towards high recovery RO in a range of applications from brackish groundwater desalination to oil and gas produced water treatment and seawater desalination.

This edited volume provides a biosemiotic analysis of the ecological relationship between food and medicine. Drawing on the origins of semiotics in medicine, this collection proposes innovative ways of considering aliments and treatments. Considering the ever-evolving character of our understanding of meaning-making in biology, and considering the keen popular interest in issues relating to food and medicines - fueled by an increasing body of interdisciplinary knowledge - the contributions here provide diverse insights and arguments into the larger ecology of organisms'engagement with and transformation through taking in matter. Bodies interpret molecules, enzymes, and alkaloids they intentionally and unintentionally come in contact with according to their pre-existing receptors. But their receptors are also changed by the experience. Once the body has identified a particular substance, it responds by initiating semiotic sequences and negotiations that fulfill vital functions for the organism at macro-, meso-, and micro-scales. Human abilities to distill and extract the living world into highly refined foods and medicines, however, have created substances far more potent than their counterparts in our historical evolution. Many of these substances also lack certain accompanying proteins, enzymes, and alkaloids that otherwise aid digestion or protect against side-effects in active extracted chemicals. Human biology has yet to catch up with human inventions such as supernormal foods and medicines that may flood receptors, overwhelming the body's normal satiation mechanisms. This volume discusses how biosemioticians can come to terms with these networks of meaning, providing a valuable and provocative compendium for semioticians, medical researchers and practitioners, sociologists, cultural theorists, bioethicists and scholars investigating the interdisciplinary questions stemming from food and medicine.

Dieses Buch enthält insgesamt 730 Biographien der zwischen 1803 und 1932 an der Universität Heidelberg lehrenden Ordinarien, außerordentlichen Professoren und Honorarprofessoren. Es ist die zweite Auflage des 1986 erstmals erschienenen „Heidelberger Gelehrtenlexikon 1803–1932“ und stellt den Vorläufer- sowie Fortsetzungsband der bereits publizierten Heidelberger Gelehrtenlexika 1386–1651, 1652–1802 und 1933–1986 dar. Die Eckdaten 1803 und 1932 markieren zum einen den Übergang der bisherigen pfälzischen Universität an Baden und der Reorganisation der Universität ab 1803 sowie zum anderen die nachhaltige Veränderung des wissenschaftlich-geistigen Profils der Ruperto-Carola durch die „Säuberung“ des Dritten Reichs nach 1932. Aufbau und Anlage der Biographien bleiben auch in der 2. Auflage – wie in den bereits erschienenen Gelehrtenlexika – unverändert. Dadurch sind alle Bände 1386–1986 für prosopographische Untersuchungen prädestiniert. Die Informationen zum akademischen Lebenslauf, zu Werkverzeichnis, Sekundärliteratur und über Familienangehörige der Biographierten wurden erheblich erweitert.

In vier bis fünf Jahrtausenden hat sich ein gewalti­ ges System von Praktiken und Begriffen - die Mathematik­ herangebildet, die in vielfältiger Weise mit unserem Alltag verknüpft ist. Was ist Mathematik? Was bedeutet sie? Wo­ mit befaßt sie sich? Was sind ihre Methoden? Wie wird sie geschaffen und benützt? Wo ist ihr Platz in der Vielgestalt der menschlichen Erfahrung? Welchen Nutzen bringt sie? Was für Schaden richtet sie an? Welches Gewicht kommt ihr zu? Diese schwierigen Fragen werden noch zusätzlich kompliziert durch die Fülle des Materials und die weitver­ zweigten Querverbindungen, die es dem einzelnen verun­ möglichen, alles zu begreifen, geschweige denn, es in seiner Gesamtheit zu erfassen und zwischen den Deckeln eines normalen Buches unterzubringen. Um von dieser Material­ fülle nicht erdrückt zu werden, haben sich die Autoren für eine andere Betrachtungsweise entschieden. Die Mathema­ tik ist seit Tausenden von Jahren ein Feld menschlicher Ak­ tivität. Warum ist Einstein so populär, obwohl wir seine Theorien nur schwer verstehen? E.P. Fischer nähert sich dem Genie auf ganz neue Weise: über Einsteins Sprache und die Bedeutung von Ästhetik und Sinnlichkeit bei der Entwicklung seiner Theorien. Der gesunde Menschenverstand reicht nicht aus, um Einsteins Ideen zu begreifen. Das Buch zeigt, wie dies dennoch und ganz ohne Mathematik möglich ist.

There are many unanswered questions regarding the molecular nature of antibodies, components of complement, and other substances which participate in the immune response. The list of substances which need to be analyzed chemically is increasing. Plasma cell products, of course, have long been of great interest because the most prevalent ones are immunoglobulins. Other cell types, however, are the source of the broad spectrum of additional substances which classically fall into the sanctum of the molecular immunologist. It is these substances, and especially those more recently discovered, which are responsible for the broadening investigative interests of immunologists. In this volume we have provided you with descriptions of research being done with immunoglobulins and with complement. Additionally, we have in­ cluded two reports that deal with molecules which are among the more recent acquisitions of the molecular immunologist. The components of complement are known to react in a cascading manner which results in the lysis of cellular antigens. The first step in the classical pathway requires the activation of CI by the antibody-antigen aggregates. This volume of Contemporary Topics in Molecular Immunology begins with the report of Reid and Porter which describes their investigation of the mechanism of activation of C I. Their descriptions of C I q and of the reaction of C I with immunoglobulins are especially intriguing. It is clearly apparent from their report that activation of the components of complement is a complex phenome­ non.

This book is an attempt to share some of the fascinating and exciting ideas of modern theoretical physics with a non-mathematical audience. I also hope to give some appreciation of the exceptionally creative people who have generated these ideas. I had no intention of writing a comprehen­ sive history of these ideas, however; I apologize to those physicists whose important contributions I may have omitted. Several people have contributed directly to the writing of this book, and I would like to take this chance to thank them. Bedauerlicherweise scheint es heutzutage notwendig, die Wissenschaftler vor ihren unattraktiven Klischees und Karikaturen zu retten, mit denen man sie identifiziert. Phy­ sik, die grundlegende Wissenschaft, scheint am meisten einer Humanisierung zu bedürfen. Altere physikalische Theorien erweckten den Anschein, daß die Physik von einer Ge­ wißheit zur nächsten fortschreitet, indem wesentliche, entscheidende Experimente durchgeführt und eindeutig interpretiert werden. Dies schuf den Eindruck, daß die Phy­ siker selbst dem Zweifel keinen Raum lassen, daß sie keine Emotionen und keine Zeit zum Lachen haben - kurz, daß sie unmenschlich sind. Viel zum Mißverständnis des Wissenschaftlers und seiner Arbeitsweise trägt das übliche Erscheinungsbild von Artikeln in wissenschaftlichen Zeitschriften bei. Mit ihren knappen Berichten von erfolgreichen Experimenten und wohlbegründeten Schlußfolge­ rungen zeigen sie wenig von der unsystematischen Weise der Forschung an den Grenzen des Wissens. Als eine Antwort darauf hat sich eine spöttische, gelegentlich zynische, selbstkritische Haltung bei Wissenschaftlern entwickelt, sozusagen eine Subkultur, die geographische und politische Schranken überschreitet. Experimentatoren spotten über die Nutzlosigkeit von Theoretikern, Glossare entlarven die wahre Bedeutung von oft ge­ droschenen Phrasen, der korrumpierende Effekt der Riesensummen an Geld wird deut­ lich, die sich auf die öffentlichen Forschungslabors ergießen, dies alles kann man in Arti­ keln aus Rußland oder Amerika, Großbritannien oder dem europäischen Kontinent finden.

Dieses Buch wendet sich zuallererst an intelligente Schüler ab 14 Jahren sowie an Studienanfänger, die sich für Mathematik interessieren und etwas mehr als die Anfangsgründe dieser Wissenschaft kennenlernen möchten. Es gibt inzwischen mehrere Bücher, die eine ähnliche Zielstellung verfolgen. Besonders gern erinnere ich mich an das Werk Vom Einmaleins zum Integral von Colerus, das ich in meiner Kindheit las. Es beginnt mit der folgenden entschiedenen Feststellung: Die Mathematik ist eine Mausefalle. Wer einmal in dieser Falle gefangen sitzt, findet selten den Ausgang, der zurück in seinen vormathematischen Seelenzustand leitet. ([49], S. 7) Einige dieser Bücher sind im Anhang zusammengestellt und kommen­ tiert. Tatsächlich ist das Unternehmen aber so lohnenswert und die Anzahl der schon vorhandenen Bücher doch so begrenzt, daß ich mich nicht scheue, ihnen ein weiteres hinzuzufügen. An zahlreichen amerikanischen Universitäten gibt es Vorlesungen, die gemeinhin oder auch offiziell als,,Mathematik für Schöngeister''firmieren. Dieser Kategorie ist das vorliegende Buch nicht zuzuordnen. Statt dessen soll es sich um eine,,Mathematik für Mathematiker''handeln, für Mathema­ tiker freilich, die noch sehr wenig von der Mathematik verstehen. Weshalb aber sollte nicht der eine oder andere von ihnen eines Tages den Autor dieses 1 Buches durch seine Vorlesungen in Staunen versetzen? Ich hoffe, daß auch meine Mathematikerkollegen Freude an dem Werk haben werden, und ich würde mir wünschen, daß auch andere Leser, bei denen die Wertschätzung für die Mathematik stärker als die Furcht vor ihr ist, Gefallen an ihm finden mögen.

Dieses Buch handelt von den faszinierenden und gleichzeitig gefürchtetsten Geschöpfen, die die Natur hervorgebracht hat. Seit jeher haben Menschen Schlangen mit Neugier und Angst, aber auch mit Ehrfurcht und Abscheu betrachtet. Schlangen bedeuten extreme Gefahr, Ungewissheit, jedoch auch wertvolle Nahrung. In vielen Kulturen symbolisieren sie besonders Positives: Fruchtbarkeit, Verjüngung, auch Frieden oder Heilung. Das Buch ist in drei Teile gegliedert. Meanwhile, Japanese and Chinese translations of the sec­ ond editon have been published. Once more I have taken the opportunity provided by a new edition to revise and extend the text. A new Sect. 2. 5'Complex Systems and the Self­ Construction of Materials'is included, in order to ana­ lyze the role of complex systems in the dramatic success of supramolecular chemistry, nanotechnology, and the technology of smart ('intelligent') materials. These top­ ics lie at the boundary between materials science and life science. In recent years, life science and computer science have been growing together in a common field of research called'artificial life'. A further new Sect. 5. 5'From Artificial Intelligence to Artificial Life'has been added, in which the role of complex systems in the field of arti­ ficiallife is discussed. I also use the opportunity of the new edition to make some remarks about the relationship between the Santa Fe approach to complex systems and the methods of synergetics and order parameters which are key concepts in this book. Geodynamics is an old science. Most of the basic theories have been conceived in principle during the 19th century and not many fundamen­ tal ideas have been added since. Some progress has been made in the following-up of these concepts and, in some instances, in the deter­ mination of some important facts about the Earth. Nevertheless, geo­ dynamics has been a highly speculative subject for about a hundred years and it is not likely that this situation will change during the next hundred. It is also unlikely that many basic new ideas will be added in that time interval. The reason for this lies in the extreme difficulty of obtaining really relevant data about the mechanics of the Earth, partly due to the impossibility of probing into the depths of the Earth by direct means to any considerable extent and partly due to the fact that the time in­ tervals in which'something happens'are ofthe order of millions of years, which is much too long for any human being to wait and experiment with. The situation in geodynamics is therefore much akin to that which existed when the ancient Greek philosophers were speculating about the possibly atomic structure of matter: there was, at that time, absolutely no hope to either confirm or to reject the hypothesis.
