Bourdeau Director Directorate-General for Science, Research and Development This seminar is in many ways similar to the one which we organized here in Brussels in February 1982 to present to European industry the results of the first EC R&D programme on the Recycling of Paper and Board. That seminar was in fact something of an experiment, being the first one of its kind that we had organized. At the time it was favourably received and we have since had ample proof of its success from the number of practical applications of the techniques developed during the first programme and which were presented at the seminar. The first programme on the Recycling of Paper and Board, which ran from 1978 to 1981, aroused considerable interest. It was consequently followed by a more ambitious programme launched in 1982 and which terminated officially in 1985 - although some of the contracts in fact ran until 1986. This second programme covered the complete wood chain with research carried out on wood production; wood harvest, storage and transport; wood, as a material; wood processing without modification of its basic structure; processing of wood and related organic materials into fibre products; wood as a source of chemicals.

This collection contains all my published papers, both research and expository, that were published from 1934 to 1988. The research papers arranged in chronological order appear in Volume I and II and in the first part of Volume III. The expository papers, which are mainly reports presented at conferences, appear in chronological order in the last part of Volume III. Volume I covers the period 1910 to 1947, the year I moved to Yale, Volume II covers the period 1947 to 1965 when I became Chairman of the Department at Yale and Volume III covers the period from 1965 to 1989, which goes beyond my assumption of an emeritus status in 1981. I have divided the time interval covered in each volume into subintervals preceded by an account of my personal history during this period, and a commentary on the research papers published in the period. I have omitted commentaries on the expository papers and have sorted out the commentaries on the research papers according to the principal fields of my research. The personal history has been based on my recollections, checked against written documentation in my file of letters as well as diaries. One of these was a diary I kept of my trip to the USSR in 1961; the others were diaries Florie (Florence) kept during other major visits abroad. I have also consulted Professor A. W. Tucker on historical details on Princeton during the 1930's.

We present here the mathematical papers of Hassler Whitney. This collection contains all the published papers, with the exception of some short announcements that Whitney did not wish to be included. We also include the introduction to his book Geometric Integration Theory, and one previously unpublished manuscript on the four-color problem. The papers are presented under some broad categories: graphs· and combinatorics, differentiable functions and singularities, analytic spaces, manifolds, bundles and characteristic classes, topology and algebraic topology, geometric integration theory. Whitney intended to write an introduction to this collection. Unfortunately he left us no manuscript at the time of his death, May 10, 1989. We had discussed the possibility of using his paper'Moscow 1935 - Topology moving toward America,'written for the Centennial of the American Mathematical Society, as part of his introduction to this collection, an idea which he much liked. We therefore include this paper, which contains personal information as well as mathematical reflections, as Whitney's own introduction to these volumes. Whitney's mathematical style, like his personal style, was that of an explorer and pioneer. One of the pictures included in these volumes shows him as a mountain climber. In mathematics, he preferred to work on undeveloped areas: break new ground and build foundations. During the last twenty years of his life he concentrated his efforts on developing an educational system that builds on the natural tendency in children to be explorers.

This publication, in two volumes, includes most of the scientific papers presented at the first meeting of the International Society for the Study of the Origin of Life (lSSOL), held on June 25-28, 1973 in Barcelona, Spain. The first volume contains the invited articles and the second volume the contributed papers, which also appear in the 1974 and 1975 issues, respectively, of the new journal Origins of Life, published by D. Reidel. A relatively large number of meetings on the subject of the origin of life have been held in different places since 1957. In terms of its organization, scope, and number and nationality of participants, the Conference celebrated last year in Barcelona closely followed the three international conferences held earlier in Moscow, U.S.S.R., 1957, Wakulla Springs, U.S.A., 1963, and Pont-a-Mousson, France, 1970. For this reason the first ISSOL meeting was also named the 4th International Conference on the Origin of Life.

1971 marked the first year since 1956 that the annual Cryogenic Engineering Conference was not held. Instead, the Cryogenic Engineering Conference gave its full support to the XIII International Congress of Refrigeration by working with Commissions I and II of the International Institute of Refrigeration to organize the cryogenic sessions for these two commissions. All of the papers presented at the International Congress of Refrigeration will be published by the IIR as part of the proceedings of that meeting. Even though no Cryogenic Engineering Conference was held in 1971, it became quite evident to the Conference Board that there were sufficient advances in cryogenic engineering to warrant the publication of Volume 17 of the Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. Volume 17 presents the advances in this important field by bringing together in one volume some of the significant papers that have been presented at various technical meetings across the country during the latter half of 1970 and the first part of 1971. In addition, several authoritative review papers have been prepared by invitation of the Cryogenic Engineering Conference Board.

This book offers an inside look into the notoriously tumultuous, professional relationship of two great minds: Karl Popper and Paul Feyerabend. It collects their complete surviving correspondence (1948-1967) and contains previously unpublished papers by both. An introduction situates the correspondence in its historical context by recounting how they first came to meet and an extensive editorial apparatus provides a wealth of background information along with systematic mini-biographies of persons named. Taken together, the collection presents Popper and Feyerabend's controversial ideas against the background of the postwar academic environment. It exposes key aspects of an evolving student-mentor relationship that eventually ended amidst increasing accusations of plagiarism. Throughout, readers will find in-depth discussions on a wide range of intriguing topics, including an ongoing debate over the foundations of quantum theory and Popper's repeated attempts to design an experiment that would test different interpretations of quantum mechanics. The captivating exchange between Feyerabend and Popper offers a valuable resource that will appeal to scientists, laymen, and a wide range of scholars: especially philosophers, historians of science and philosophy and, more generally, intellectual historians.

As editor of the series'Perspectives in Sexuality: Behavior, Research, and Therapy,'I consider it a major scholarly achievement to publish selected proceedings of the Second International Congress of Sexology. Never before have so many professional organizations supported such a conference or so many scholars, from so many coun­ tries, participated in such a conference. Eighteen countries were represented; over one hundred papers were presented. The Congress and these proceedings mark an historical mile­ stone for sexology in international scientific cooperation. The collaboration of so many researchers from diverse disciplines fur­ ther illuminates the interdisciplinary approach. The papers pre­ sented reflect the challenge accepted by scientists to compare varieties of techniques and programs, to develop new theories and creative approaches in their investigations, and to initiate sci­ entific study of heretofore taboo areas of inquiry. Clearly, sexology has come of age. It takes its place among the respected scientific disciplines. This monumental achievement, the Second International Congress of Sexology, signals the emer­ gence at the international level of Sexology as Science. Richard Green ix Preface The Second International Congress of Sexology was held in Montreal, Canada on October 28-31, 1976. Researchers of interna­ tional acclaim from eighteen countries presented progress reports in specialities as endocrinology, neurophysiology, infertility, contraception, sexual dysfunction, ethics in sex research and sex education. The Congress, whose theme was'international progress in sexology,'had as its scientific objective a wide range of sub­ jects concerning the interdisciplinary study of sexology from many areas of the world.

R. S. PHILLIPS I am very gratified to have been asked to give this introductory talk for our honoured guest, Israel Gohberg. I should like to begin by spending a few minutes talking shop. One of the great tragedies of being a mathematician is that your papers are read so seldom. On the average ten people will read the introduction to a paper and perhaps two of these will actually study the paper. It's difficult to know how to deal with this problem. One strategy which will at least get you one more reader, is to collaborate with someone. I think Israel early on caught on to this, and I imagine that by this time most of the analysts in the world have collaborated with him. He continues relentlessly in this pursuit; he visits his neighbour Harry Dym at the Weizmann Institute regularly, he spends several months a year in Amsterdam working with Rien Kaashoek, several weeks in Maryland with Seymour Goldberg, a couple of weeks here in Calgary with Peter Lancaster, and on the rare occasions when he is in Tel Aviv, he takes care of his many students.

The great majority of papers on brain research that have been published in Mainland China in recent years have appeared in the Chinese language (only a small fraction of the work has appeared in English in the journal Scientia Sinica), and hence they have remained inacces­ sible to other workers, since there have been no translation programs of publications in this field in Chinese of the types that have existed, for example, for Russian-language materials. Accordingly, most investigators are not aware of the work of their Chinese colleagues in this field. Yet the field has been an active if small one in China, and has covered a variety of topics that include electrophysiology, neurochemistry, neuropharmacology, neuropsychology, and in­ strumentation. Standard techniques and instruments, a number of Chinese manufacture, have been employed. Moreover, Chinese workers have been quite familiar with the publications of other investigators, as is readily apparent from the bibliographies of the papers (see Index).

The book reports on advanced topics in interactive robotics research and practice; in particular, it addresses non-technical obstacles to the broadest uptake of these technologies. It focuses on new technologies that can physically and cognitively interact with humans, including neural interfaces, soft wearable robots, and sensor and actuator technologies; further, it discusses important regulatory challenges, including but not limited to business models, standardization, education and ethical–legal–socioeconomic issues. Gathering the outcomes of the 1st INBOTS Conference (INBOTS2018), held on October 16–20, 2018 in Pisa, Italy, the book addresses the needs of a broad audience of academics and professionals working in government and industry, as well as end users. In addition to providing readers with detailed information and a source of inspiration for new projects and collaborations, it discusses representative case studies highlighting practical challenges in the implementation of interactive robots in a number of fields, as well as solutions to improve communication between different stakeholders. By merging engineering, medical, ethical and political perspectives, the book offers a multidisciplinary, timely snapshot of interactive robotics.

'I'll bet it will tum out that brains use both mechanisms, in different centers.'Much of my waking life and that of many of my friends is spent racking our brains over how brains work. This book claims that good science is often a form of betting on the outcome of research-the stakes being time and reputation and someone's money. Some scientists, to be sure, claim they avoid leaning this way or that, in the name of keeping an open mind. I recommend making expectations explicit in order to design controls against unconscious influence, formulate alternative outcomes more clearly-and to add zest. Both the immediately upcoming experiment and the expected result of many long years of work by many people after one is gone are proper subjects for betting or the most informed and serious guessing. The working title for this collection of new and old papers was for some time'Betting on how brains work'and then'Betting on brains.'It goes without saying that the book will not answer the title question but will speak to it, in particular making a series of propositions that I think are more likely to be confirmed by future research than the alternatives we can presently recognize. It follows that a significant message, implied in many chapters of the book is this.

In most countries, primary prevention programmes against the HIV / AIDS epidemic have been implemented. Broadly speaking, three levels of intervention can be identified: - national campaigns directed to the general population; most of them are multi phase campaigns aimed at providing information about HIV transmission and protective behaviour; they use the various mass media channels and are mainly directed to sexual behaviour modifi­ cation; - community-based interventions, addressed to specific target popula­ tions; these populations have been typically selected according to both the high risk of infection (gay men and prostitutes) and the difficulty to reach the members of these communities (intravenous drug users); - individual testing and counselling, often supported by public funds or large non-governmental organizations. Major efforts have been devoted to the development and the implemen­ tation of these preventive programmes, both in terms of human re­ sources and financial support. On the other hand, in most countries, far less energy has been put into the evaluation of these campaigns. This gap is not explained by the fact that evaluation of AIDS/HIV cam­ paigns is a totally new challenge in terms of methodology: there are classical methods, developed over twenty years and used in other fields of prevention.

At the close of the year 1900, motor vehicle registrations throughout the United States totaled 8000. These vehicles rode on unpaved and often dusty country roads. The only problem of traffic was an occasional pedestrian or a frightened horse or cow frenzied by the roar of this new creature. Today more than 82,000,000 registrations, representing 50% of the world's automobiles, are recorded in this country. In 1963 these vehicles traveled 798 billion miles over newly constructed modern highways, expressways, freeways, quickways, and thru­ ways, as well as improved rural and urban roads and streets. Out of all this has sprung the traffic engineer. Today's modern roadway is an engineering structure which has been developed through sound principles of design with provisions for safety and efficiency. An example of this safety factor can be found by the exacting specifications for cross sections, grades, roadside control, medians, and other design features. For many years, the responsi­ bility for controlling traffic fell naturally into the domain of the police. However, as traffic increased, many problems developed which were beyond the scope of normal police work. Since the highway system is an engineering structure which requires an engi­ neering approach to appraise operating problems and engineering techniques to solve them, the traffic engineer came into being.

Should scientific congresses take place in connection with Olympic Games, and should science be represented not only in the form of applied science engaged in the care of athletes, but also as an informing, reflecting and critical authority? The Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXth Olympiad answered this question in the affirmative, and the results have justified this decision. The invitation sent out by the Organizing Committee was accepted by numerous eminent scholars and many participants from all over the world; it was their merit that the general topic of the congress could be discussed in manifold ways under various aspects and without prejudice. For this reason, they deserve our gratitude and appreciation. By now, the congress report has been completed. It is part of the total scientific concept which includes the preparatory publication,'The Scientific View of Sport­ Perspectives, Aspects, Issues', the congress itself and the present report; and, in close connection therewith, the exhibitions,'100 Years of German Excavation Work in Olympia','Sport and Medicine'and the literary exhibition. It is to be hoped that this report will prove an important source of information and a stimulus for discussion among participants and scholars, students, teachers and coaches; and that it will safeguard the fruitful continuation of the work initiated by the Munich congress. Thanks are due to those who took pains in preparing this document. It will be an essential element within the framework of all that will remain of the Olympic Games of 1972.

It is now more than twenty years since a proposal was first mooted to hold an international tunnelling symposium in Britain. At the time of the first symposium, held in London in 1976, the Channel Tunnel pro­ ject had just been shelved. Last weekend a charity walk was held in the finished tunnel, which will be open for business later in the year. Tunnels have figured prominently, and at times spectacularly, in the development of national and international links and it is hoped that such links gather pace in the future. It is particularly pleasing that Alastair Biggart of Storebrelt has agreed to deliver the twenty-sixth Sir Julius Wernher Memorial Lecture of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, entitled'The changing face of tunnelling', at the start of this event. • Although almost every edition of the technical journals on tunnelling reports another £1 billion scheme somewhere in the world, it would be unfair of me to suggest that tunnelling is restricted to these prestigious schemes for major transport links. Much of the work that makes mod­ ern life possible receives hardly a mention outside the technical press and one suspects that society at large applies the'out of sight, out of mind'attitude even more readily to underground construction than it does to other forms of engineering. Clearly, there is a contiiming need to improve the capacity and performance of our infrastructure, while hav­ ing a careful regard for the environment.

These post-proceedings contain 27 papers that were accepted for presentation at the Fifth International Workshop on Information Hiding, held 7–9 October 2002, in Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands. The papers were selected from 78 submissions on the basis of their scienti?c excellence and novelty by the program committee. We tried to have a balanced program covering several aspects of information hiding. The program committee was composed of Ross J. Anderson (Univ- sity of Cambridge, UK), Jan Camenisch (IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, Switzerland), Ingemar J. Cox (NEC Research Institute, USA), John McHugh (SEI/CERT, USA), Ira S. Moskowitz (Naval Research Laboratory, USA), Job Oostveen (Philips Research, The Netherlands), Andreas P?tzmann (Dresden University of Technology, Germany), Mike Reiter (Carnegie Mellon University, USA), and me. We all wish to thank all the authors of submissions for o?ering their papers for consideration. This year, contrary to the four previous workshops, the call for papers - quested anonymous submissions. However, anonymity was not compulsory and we did accept some papers in which the identity of the authors was clear. Each submission was assigned to three members of the program committee. Papers submitted by program committee members were assigned to four reviewers. The program committee relied on the advice of outside colleagues. We also insisted that 12 of the 27 accepted papers should be revised according to the comments of the reviewers.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the Second International Conference on Symbolic and Numerical Scientific Computation, SNSC 2001, held in Hagenberg, Austria, in September 2001. The 19 revised full papers presented were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and improvement. The papers are organized in topical sections on symbolics and numerics of differential equations, symbolics and numerics in algebra and geometry, and applications in physics and engineering.

The refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Developments in Language Theory, DLT 2002, held in Kyoto, Japan in September 2002. The 28 revised full papers presented together with 8 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 63 submissions. Among the topics addressed are grammars and acceptors for strings, graphs, arrays, etc; efficient algorithms for languages; combinatorial and algebraic properties of languages; decision problems; relations to complexity theory, logic picture description and analysis, DNA computing, cryptography, concurrency, quantum computing, and algebraic systems.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 12th International Workshop on Logic Based Program Synthesis and Transformation, LOPSTR 2002, held in Madrid, Spain in September 2002. The 15 revised full papers presented together with 7 abstracts were carefully selected during two rounds of reviewing and revision from 40 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on debugging and types, tabling and constraints, abstract interpretation, program refinement, verification, partial evaluation, and rewriting and object-oriented development.

This collection represents the proceedings of the 1st GSFC/JPL Workshop on Radical Agent Concepts (WRAC), which was held on 16–18 January, 2002 at the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) Conference Center in McLean, VA, USA. Over the past few years, agent technologyhas emerged as a powerful force in computing. Agent technology may well form the foundation for the next gen- ation of computing systems. New and innovative agent concepts and techniques may bring further developments to this exploding area of research. Such work is often strongly inspired by theoretical or empirical studies of human behavior, social intelligence, psychology, arts, biology, computer science and philosophy. Thisworkshopaimedatbringingtogether,inaninterdisciplinaryevent,or- inal thinkers, practitioners and academics with an interest in radical (very - novative) concepts for agent-based systems. The workshop provided a forum to present the latest research?ndings in many aspects of agent technology. The - ganizers welcomed participation by those working in agent architectures, agent communities, agent communications, agent modeling, agent applications and other agent-related areas. We were particularly seeking papers on novel and - novative ideas, pushing the envelope of current agent technology. Contributions without a prototype or working system, i.e., purely conceptual contributions, were welcomed, and ”out-of-the-box” thinkers were especially encouraged to participate. The workshop was structured so as to allow the participants adequate time for discussion and interaction, to exchange ideas and re?ect on the motivations, scienti?c grounds and practical consequences of the concepts presented.

These proceedings contain a refereed selection of papers presented at the Second Annual Workshop of the Types Working Group (Computer-Assisted Reasoning based on Type Theory, EUIST project 29001), which was held April 24–28, 2002 in Hotel Erica, Berg en Dal (close to Nijmegen), The Netherlands. The workshop was attended by about 90 researchers. On April 27, there was a special afternoon celebrating the 60th birthday of Per Martin-L¨of, one of the founding fathers of the Types community. The afternoon consisted of the following three invited talks: “Constructive Validity Revisited” by Dana Scott, “From the Rules of Logic to the Logic of Rules” by Jean-Yves Girard, and “The Varieties of Type Theories” by Peter Aczel. The contents of these contributions were not laid down in these proceedings, but the videos of the talks and the slides used by the speakers are available at http://www. cs. kun. nl/fnds/MartinLoefDay/LoefTalks. htm The previous workshop of the Types Working Group under EUIST project 29001 was held in 2000 in Durham, UK. The workshops Types 2000 and Types 2002 followed a series of meetings organized in the period 1993 – 1999 whithin previous Types projects (ESPRIT BRA 6435 and ESPRIT Working Group 21900). The proceedings of these earlier Types workshops were also published in the LNCS series, as volumes 806, 996, 1158, 1512, 1657, 1956 and 2277. ESPRIT BRA 6453 was a continuation of ESPRIT Action 3245, Logical Frameworks: - sign, Implementation and Experiments.

The idea of a FAABS workshop was first conceived in 1998 at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, while the Agent Technology Development Group in the Advanced Architectures and Automation Branch (Code 588) was developing a prototype agent community to automate satellite ground operations. While developing this system, several race conditions arose within and between agents. Due to the complexity of the agents and the communications between them, it was decided that a formal approach was needed to specify the agents and the communications between them, so that the system could be checked for additional errors. A formal model of the inter-agent communications was developed, with the expectation that this would enable us to find more errors. Success in this convinced us of the importance of using formal methods to model agent-based systems. To share our own experiences and to learn how others were approaching these issues, we decided to hold a workshop on formal methods and agent-based systems. The response was overwhelming. The result was the first FAABS workshop, which was held at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Posters, paper presentations, panels, and an invited talk by J Moore stimulated much discussion and subsequent collaboration.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Digital Rights Management, DRM 2002, held in Washington, DC, USA, in November 2002, in conjunction with ACM CCS-9. The 13 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. Among the topics addressed are DES implementation for DRM applications, cryptographic attacks, industrial challenges, public key broadcast encryption, fingerprinting, copy-prevention techniques, copyright limitations, content protection, watermarking systems, and theft-protected proprietary certificates.

Over the past three decades, software engineers have derived a progressively better understanding of the characteristics of complexity in software. It is now widely recognised thatinteraction is probably the most important single char- teristic of complex software. Software architectures that contain many dyna- cally interacting components, each with their own thread of control, and eng- ing in complex coordination protocols, are typically orders of magnitude more complex to correctly and e?ciently engineer than those that simply compute a function of some input through a single thread of control. Unfortunately, it turns out that many (if not most) real-world applications have precisely these characteristics. As a consequence, a major research topic in c- puter science over at least the past two decades has been the development of tools and techniques to model, understand, and implement systems in which interaction is the norm. Indeed, many researchers now believe that in future computation itself will be understood as chie?y a process of interaction.

This book is based on a study of referees'reports and letters from journal editors on reasons why papers written by non-native researchers are rejected due to problems with English (long sentences, redundancy, poor structure etc.). It draws on English-related errors from around 5000 papers written by non-native authors, around 3000 emails, 500 abstracts by PhD students, and over 1500 hours of teaching researchers how to write and present research papers. The exercises are organized into thirteen chapters on: adjectives and adverbs (e.g. actual vs current, different vs several, continually vs continuously), link words (e.g. on the contrary vs on the other hand, despite vs nevertheless), nouns (e.g. danger vs hazard, measure vs measurement), prepositions (e.g. among vs between, in vs into, with vs within), verbs (e.g. check vs control, compose vs comprise, arise vs raise, exclude vs rule out), false friends and synonyms, spelling, useful phrases, inclusive vocabulary, emails, using Large Language Models for correcting, paraphrasing, and translating. Nearly all exercises require no actual writing but simply choosing between various options, thus facilitating self-study, e-reading and rapid progress. The exercises can also be integrated into English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Special Purposes (ESP) courses at universities and research institutes.
