The response of the international community to the pressing socio-ecological problems has been framed around the concept of ‘sustainable development'. The ecological pressure, however, has continued to rise and mainstream sustainability discourse has proven to be problematic. It contains an instrumental view of the world, a strong focus on technological solutions, and the premise that natural and human-made ‘capitals'are substitutable. Human-induced climate change is emerging as the most critical issue of the modern era. Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists now confirm that human extraction and burning of fossil fuels, along with rampant deforestation, is causing a rapid build-up of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in air and water. These emissions heat up the planet and may be pushing Earth's capacity beyond the threshold at which equilibrium can be restored. Global warming is sustained by a global capitalist economy dependent upon the fossil fuel industry and agribusiness, both of which are unsustainable. The toxic effects of air pollution, ocean acidification, and soil degradation are harming the health of all species. Through an interdisciplinary approach that brings in the perspectives of the physical sciences, psychology, anthropology, economics, cultural history and spirituality Homesick investigates the evolutionary path by which human beings have arrived at this precarious juncture. It proposes that this perilous detour in human cultural evolution arises from a fallacious belief that the human species, unlike other species, is not bound by ecological laws but has a special right to control and master the natural world. Human beings suffer from the illusion that they are separate from the Earth, their planetary home, which is perceived as an object— a commodity— to exploit through technology. They have forgotten what indigenous peoples still remember: humanity is part of, not apart from, the natural world. Homesick argues that cultural transformation towards a sustainable future is possible when human beings reawaken to Nature as partner and provider. As memory of their embeddedness in the natural world is aroused, they will experience love and respect for the interdependent web of life that sustains them. This reawakening incrementally induces a radical change in thinking within society and sets in motion a paradigm shift. Cultural institutions are then reshaped to match this new benign worldview.

The Green Light ('Le Feu Vert') offers an original and profound exploration of the roots of environmental philosophy and the Anthropocene. Siting Noxious Facilities explains and illustrates processes and criteria used to site noxious manufacturing and waste management facilities. It proposes a framework that integrates economic location analysis and risk analysis, emphasizing the reduction of uncertainty. This book begins by defining noxious facilities and considers the important role of manufacturing in the world economy, before going on to describe the historical practices used in locating these facilities for much of the twentieth century. It then shifts focus to analyze the complex set of considerations in the twenty-first century that mean that any facility that produces annoying smells and sounds, is unsightly and emits hazardous substances has had the bar of acceptability markedly raised for economic, environmental, social and political acceptability. Drawing on case study examples that highlight pollution prevention, choosing locations at major plants (CLAMP), negotiations, and surrendering control of an activity, Greenberg presents a hybrid framework that advocates the amalgamation of industrial location processes with human health and environmental-oriented risk analysis. In this compilation, the authors begin by investigating the particularities of the Chilean water framework zooming on a case study, the “SuizAgua project” launched by the Fundación Chile. This project was aimed at achieving a compromise between the State, the civil society and the enterprises to overcome conflicts on water management. The SuizAgua project as developed by the Fundación Chile is illustrated as a solution to the conflicts pervading the Chilean debate on water. In the following chapter, the authors present a study with the objective of evaluating spatial displacements of sea turtle nesting sites on beaches where restorative and protective actions have been taken using physical barriers. Changes in nesting behavior and nesting location are also assessed. Following this, the authors provide field and laboratory data from multiannual studies on the phototactic behavior of zooplankton organisms collected in freshwater and marine ecosystems of Greece using chemical light and improvised light trap designs. The results reveal that chemical light aids in attracting and capturing aquatic organisms. Light traps also have the advantage of being low cost, having passive sampling and retaining living specimens. This book also includes a study carried out by the Italian association for geographical explorations La Venta, lasting up to summer 2017. The goal of this study was to define the carrying capacity of The Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR); review cave exploration and multidisciplinary studies such as biology, paleontology, and hydrogeology; and search for alternative caves to aid in managing the increasing tourism and limiting the impact on the natural environment of the PPUR and its surrounding areas. In the following work, dark pixel and atmospheric correction concepts using Landsat images were used to develop algorithms to generate spatial distribution maps for estimated ambient PM2.5, PM10 and SO2 concentrations over selected areas of Saskatchewan, Canada. Results show that the dark pixel concept works well for water surfaces while the atmospheric correction concept can be effectively applied for any surface with known spectral reflectance. The authors discuss the flora of the Mladezhki Halm, which have been quite isolated from anthropogenic activity. Today, some of these include autochthonous species as Pistacia terebinthus, Celtis australis, Fraxinus ornus, Ulmus minor, Robinia pseudoacacia, Quercus robur, and Ziziphus jujube. In the following chapter, a modified ADM1-model was used to simulate the transformation of a mixture of complex substrates to biogas in a biogas plant fed with manure and food waste as substrates.ADM1-model. The general structure of the ADM1 was not modified except for changes in the disintegration and hydrolysis of the anaerobic process. Since complex substrates degrade only slowly, the disintegration was described by a Contois-kinetics, while considering disintegration to be the time limiting step of the anaerobic process.

Ecological integrity is concerned with protecting the planet in a holistic way, while respecting ethics and human rights. Over recent years it has been introduced directly and indirectly in several legal regimes, culminating in international law with the 2016 expanded remit of the International Criminal Court, which now includes'environmental disasters'. This book celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Global Ecological Integrity Group (GEIG), which includes more than 250 scholars and independent researchers worldwide, from diverse disciplines, including ecology, biology, philosophy, epidemiology, public health, ecological economics, and international law. Oberholster, Christoff Truter, and Anna-Maria Botha present a study that examines the link between river phosphorus sensitivity, self-purification capacity, and benthic algae biomass downstream from waste water treatment plants in the middle Olifants River sub catchment in South Africa. Then, Huynh Viet Khai presents a study on organic vegetables and customer willingness to pay for them in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta. Huynh Viet Khai also presents a study based in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta in the following chapter, focusing on rice farmers and their attitudes towards pesticides. Ending the book, Marco Costa and Magda Monteiro analyze long-term time series of monthly mean air temperatures in several European cities with suitable statistical time series models in order to accommodate statistical properties of this type of correlated data. The results allow for better monitoring of the climate change in Europe.

Environmental harms exert a significant toll and pose substantial economic costs on societies around the world. Although such harms have been studied from both legal and social science perspectives, these disciplinary-specific approaches are not, on their own, fully able to address the complexity of these environmental challenges. Many legal approaches, for example, are limited by their inattention to the motivations behind environmental offences, whereas many social science approaches are hindered by an insufficient grounding in current legislative frameworks. This edited collection constitutes a pioneering attempt to overcome these limitations by uniting legal and social science perspectives. Together, the book's contributors forge an innovative socio-legal approach to more effectively respond to, and to prevent, environmental harms around the world. Chapter One discusses their socio-economic benefits and downsides, as well as why the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) require periodic levee inspections and evaluations. Chapter Two focuses on the Mississippi River levee system, which is one of the largest levee systems in the world, in order to better understand the levee-delta interaction and its impact on the loss of vast expanses of coastal land on deltas around the globe. Chapter Four focuses on boron, an important element affecting bio-synthesis and cell metabolism, yet one that is harmful when it exceeds its critical limit. A model for the analysis of concentration polarization and the degree of rejection of boric acid, borate anions and monovalent ions is proposed. Chapter Five investigates the relationship between coral calcification rate and four different controlling factors: seawater pH, aragonite saturation state (Ùarag), temperature, and light intensity. Seawater temperature, pH, andÙarag are all being directly affected by the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide occurring. Chapter Six discusses pollution caused by mineral oil. The use of mineral oil in a great variety of products is a basic necessity for an industrialized country; however, the authors say we cannot turn our backs on the responsibilities for the incorrect use of this product, or the damage caused by dumping untreated mineral oil waste products into water bodies. In Chapter Seven, the results of geomorphological research in the Ejina Basin (Inner Mongolia) are presented with regard to identifying the main landforms and the contemporary geologic processes. Chapter Eight focuses on the study of geomorphology and landscape evolution in Namibia, southwestern Africa. The relationship between geomorphology and climate in Namibia reveals the degree and extent to which its landscapes are determined by changing environmental conditions. Finally, Chapter 9 is an analysis of the current global logging activities. The authors explore the major drivers of logging and the logging processes which range from large-scale commercial timber plantations to individual harvesting. The chapter also gives a review of logging operations at a global scale and its underlying effects on the environment and the economy.

In the eleventh and final chapter, Xiaofeng Yang and Xingping Wen present a study determining the effect of sky view factor to land surface temperature using remote sensing imaging.

Collective Action is now recognized as central to addressing the water governance challenge of delivering sustainable development and global environmental benefits.
