Over the last few years, in the field of sports science and medicine, empirical theories about the treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes have been gradually sup­ ported by a rapid growth of research data and scientific literature. This has permit­ ted a better knowledge of the healing process from injury and/or surgery, and a more appropriate understanding of the biomechanical behavior of several biological structures to load and exercise. We agree with the opinion that development and advancement through a rehabil­ itation program should be based on the type and severity of the lesion, healing time of the injured structures, individual pain tolerance level, possible adopted surgical procedure, and sport-specific biomechanical demands. Currently, the most re cent theories on rehabilitation of the injured athlete em­ phasize the concepts of a multidisciplinary approach, a functional recovery instead of symptomatic improvement, and an early mobilization with the implementation of an individualized program treating the entire body kinetic chains. Among different methods of rehabilitation, the physician should choose those re­ vealing their clinical appropriateness, founded on a validated scientific data and/or proven clinical efficacy. Our goal has been to provide a comprehensive coverage of principles and practi­ cal applications of the rehabilitation methods of the most common sports injuries, and we have tried to combine the variety of expertise and backgrounds of a multidis­ ciplinary group of contributing authors.

This issue of Clinics in Sports Medicine focuses on anatomy and biomechanics and includes exam and imagine, surgical timing, and covers a variety of conditions. Internal impingement, multi-directional instability, bone loss, revision surgery, posterior instability, and a variety of other clinical conditions are thoroughly addressed. In addition, there are also chapters on both contact and non-contact athletes, instability in pediatric patients and rehabilitation.

Patienten mit Fußproblemen nehmen in der Praxis des Orthopäden einen breiten Raum ein. Behandlungen von Fußdeformitäten stellen ein ureigenes Gebiet der konservativen und operativen Orthopädie sowie des orthopädischen Schuhhandwerks dar. In dem Buch wird sowohl auf diagnostische Verfahren, auf konservative und operative Behandlung der einzelnen Krankheitsbilder wie auch auf die Versorgung mit orthopädischem Schuhwerk eingegangen. Eigene Kapitel sind dem rheumatischen Fuß und dem Fuß des Diabetikers gewidmet.

Back in September of 1974, I acquired much valuable information while attending the International Conference on Total Knee Replacement in London, which was organized by The Medical Engineering Working Party and the Tribology Group of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the British Orthopaedic Association. I was greatly inspired by the conference, and it formed the beginning of my studies on total knee replacement. The co-editors of this proceedings, Prof. J. Paul and Dr. S. Yamamoto, are both acquaintances made originally at that conference. The International Symposium on Total Knee Replacement held in Nagoya, Japan, on 18-19 May 1987 was attended by many participants, including Prof. Walker, who had presented his studies earlier in London. During the past decade and a half, remarkable technical progress has been made in total knee prostheses. In this symposium, cemented total knee replacement (TKR), noncemented TKR, design considerations of total knee prostheses, problems concerning the patello­ femoral joint, and the newly developed total knee prosthesis were the main topics discussed. I believe that much new information, including that about the challenges which still remain, along with a fresh view towards continuing studies, are presented here for the reader. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the support of the Knee Joint Research Society in Japan and to the participants in the symposium for their great help in publishing this book.
