The purpose of this series of volumes is to present a comprehensive view of the complications that result from the use of acceptable diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Individual volumes will deal with iatrogenic complications involving (1) the alimentary system, (2) the urinary system, (3) the respiratory and cardiac systems, (4) the skeletal system and (5) the pediatric patient. The term iatrogenic, derived from two Greek words, means physician-induced. Originally, it applied only to psychiatric disorders generated in the patient by autosuggestion, based on misinterpretation of the doctor's attitude and com­ ments. As clinically used, it now pertains to the inadvertent side-effects and com­ plications created in the course of diagnosis and treatment. The classic categories of disease have included: (1) congenital and developmental, (2) traumatic, (3) infectious and inflammatory, (4) metabolic, (5) neoplastic, and (6) degenerative. To these must be added, however, iatrogenic disorders-a major, although gen­ erally unacknowledged, source of illness. While great advances in medical care in both diagnosis and therapy have been accomplished in the past few decades, many are at times associated with certain side-effects and risks which may result in distress equal to or greater than the basic condition. Iatrogenic complications, which may be referred to as'diseases of medical progress,'have become a new dimension in the causation of human disease.

The advent in recent years of several new imaging modalities for the application in diag­ nosis and patient management has had an unprecedented impact on patient care. By per­ mitting the acquisition of information without intervention, these new modalities have made the diagnostic process more humane. They have also made possible the treatment of many disorders of the upper and lower urinary tract by means of interventional tech­ niques, replacing a number of surgical procedures. The editor of this volume has engaged international experts in radiology to describe the state of the art of radio log y of the upper urinary tract. Local and regional abnormalities are covered, but so too is the involvement of urinary structures in systemic disease. The radiologic approach and interpretation are combined with the presentation of pertinent clinical observations and important pathophysiologic concepts. The text is concise and the illustrations are appropriate. Up-to-date international bibliographies are provided. Both the text and the illustrations will serve as sources of information for the radiologists, urol­ ogists, nephrologists, gynecologists, and oncologists. Most importantly, the material is presented in such a way that practicing specialists dealing with urologic disorders, as well as physicians in training will benefit. We feel that it is timely to publish a present day treatise on urinary tract radiology in order to convey the contributions made by various newer imaging modalities to the diagnosis of urinary disorders.

The publication of this volume, which is based upon presentations made to the Third European Symposium on Radiopharmacology at Noordwijkerhout, April 22 - 24, 1982, is indicative of the continued interest in this sub-branch of Nuclear Medicine. The transactions of the first two meetings were published as Progress in Radiopharmacology, Volumes 1 and 2 by Elsevier/North-Holland Bio­ medical Press. We are particularly pleased to have reached an agreement with Martinus Nijhoff Publishers to include Progress in Radiopharmacology 3 in the series Developments in Nuclear Medicine. This not only ensures the continuity of the series but by including it in a series of Nuclear Medical Monographs the availability of the text to more general readers, for background information, is greatly enhanced. As with the previous two volumes each of the three topics has been so treated as to relate the biodistribution of the radiopharmaceuticals to normal and pathophysiological conditions to provide background information for the practising nuclear medical specialist. Special attention has been given to European activities but these have been clearly placed in context in relation to developments from outside Europe. The Third European Symposium on Radiopharmacology was held under the auspices of the European Joint Commitee on Radiopharmaceuticals of the European Nuclear Medicine Society and the Society of Nuclear Medicine Europe. Carcinoma of the prostate increasingly dominates the attention of urologists for both scientific and clinical reasons. The search for an explanation and the prediction of the variable behaviour of the malignant prostatic cell continues unabated. The search for more precise tumour staging and more effective treatment is equally vigorous. Editors Andrew Bruce and John Trachtenberg have assembled acknowledged leaders in prostate cancer to present those areas of direct interest to the clinician.
