This book provides an overview of the metabolism of dietary compounds by the intestinal microbiota, and on the consequences of such metabolic activity on host metabolism and physiological functions; both in intestinal and peripheral tissues.Over the last years, our understanding of the causal links between microbiota metabolic activity towards dietary and endogenous substrates and human health status has evolved extensively. In this context, the book starts with a comprehensive introduction devoted to the physiological and metabolic functions of the intestinal epithelium, followed by a part dedicated to the way intestine offers board and lodging for microbes being on a short- or long-term stay. The next chapters focus on the utilization of the available substrates from diet by the intestinal bacteria to produce numerous bacterial metabolites, and on the impact of such microbial activity, in the first place for communication between microbes, and for communication between microbes and lodging host. As will be detailed, this latter process of interkingdom communication leads to either beneficial or deleterious effects on intestinal physiology and metabolism. Special attention is given to selected pathophysiological processes namely chronic intestinal inflammation, colorectal carcinogenesis, and diarrhea. This book highlights novel and pragmatic health promotion efforts being adopted with boys and young men of colour (BYMOC) globally that apply a strengths-based approach. Men's adoption of risky health practices and reluctance to seek help and engage in preventive health behaviours have frequently been used to explain their poorer health outcomes, particularly among adolescent boys and young men, and disproportionately affecting BYMOC. Emerging literature on equity and men's health has conveyed that intersections among age, race, sexuality, socioeconomic status and geography contribute to a complex array of health and social inequities. This book aims to explore technology solutions and systems to help people in remote areas in order to improve medical care. Access to health care services is critical to good health, but residents of remote areas face a variety of access barriers. The obstacles faced by health care providers and patients in rural areas are very different from those in urban areas. This could be caused by economic factors, cultural and social differences, educational deficiencies, lack of recognition by legislators, and the sheer isolation of living in inland areas, all of which conspire to create health care disparities and hinder people living in inland areas in their struggle to lead normal, healthy lives. Based on available analyses, further progress is needed to promote appropriateness of care, address geographic imbalances in health care use, and prevent the spread of risk factors including chronic diseases and regular health problems. To eradicate these problems, it is essential to develop a telemedicine system with ICT integration that will help patients in inland areas by using contemporary technologies: it would thus be possible for patients to meet their goals using these systems even without the presence of a physician since authenticated prescriptions are generated by doctors and can be transmitted to patients electronically. Das Projekt «Soziale Arbeit in der Suchtprävention und Suchthilfe der Deutschsprachigen Schweiz» hat die Professionalisierung der Sozialen Arbeit in der Suchtarbeit zum Ziel. In einem ersten Schritt soll mittels dieser Open Access Fachpublikation eine Bestandsaufnahme zur Sozialen Arbeit in den Arbeitsfeldern der Suchtprävention und Suchthilfe gemacht werden. Darauf aufbauend wird in einem nächsten Schritt eine Tagung organisiert und die Resultate zur Diskussion gestellt und erste Empfehlungen formuliert. Anschliessend sollen weitere (forschungsbasierte) Entwicklungsschritte zum Thema lanciert werden.In diesem Buch werden die Arbeitsfelder der Sozialen Arbeit sowohl im ambulanten, aufsuchenden wie auch stationären Setting der Suchthilfe und der Suchtprävention in der deutschsprachigen Schweiz dargestellt und diskutiert
