Mycotoxins, toxic metabolites of molds elaborated during their colonization of foods and feeds, pose a threat to human and animal life. Molds are the diverse group of fungi, which grow in compatatively dry and warm environments, produce copious amount of spores and promote the elaboration of these mycotoxins. Depression is one of the commonest problems in old age. Yet until recently, old people were systematically exduded from participating in drug trials and similar investigations. As a result, knowledge regarding incidence, natural history and management of depression in the elderly are somewhat limited. It is now well-established that old people are sensitive to most psychotropic drugs and they tend to suffer from adverse effects and side effects of antidepressant drugs more frequently than any other age group. These are considered to be due to age-related physiological changes. In addition, because of the frequent association with multiple pathology, the elderly are likely to receive polypharmacy which further complicates the management of antidepressant drug therapy. The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive guidance on the drug therapy of depression for the dinicians involved in the health care of the elderly. In the first section, epidemiology, presentations and assessment of depression in old age and neuroendocrine abnormalities observed in patients with depression are briefly discussed. However, it mainly deals with the problems of antidepressant drug therapy, such as which antidepressant to prescribe, how to monitor efficacy and side effects, what is the adequate dose, how long to treat a single episode of depression and who requires long term medication. This second volume continues the description of the psychotropic agents and discusses anxiolytics, gerontopsychopharmacological agents, and psychomotor stimulants. Of these groups of substances, most of this volume has been devoted to anxiolytics as the authors have endeavored to convey as complete a picture as possible. The editors are of the opinion that particular attention should be given to anxiolytics with regard to their range of administration as this is the most frequently prescribed group of psychotropic drugs. In contrast to neuroleptics and thymoleptics, anxiolytics are a class of psychotropic drugs whose therapeutic effect can be recognized in animal experiments to some extent. This, together with the analysis of the biochemical mechanisms of their actions, permits a better understanding of material processes in the brain accompanying the emotions: anxiety and tension. For the first time in the history of the Handbook the editors have devoted a whole chapter to gerontopsychopharmacological agents. In doing so they are also aware of the risk they are taking, at least from a pharmacological point of view, as gerontopsychopharmacological agents are an insufficiently defined and extremely heterogeneous group of substances. Mycotoxins in Foodstuffs—3 is a collection of invited lectures presented at the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry's Third International Symposium on Mycotoxins in Foodstuffs, held in Paris, France, on September 16-18, 1976. The papers explore the health hazards posed by mycotoxins found in foodstuffs, including aflatoxins and trichothecenes, as well as ways of addressing the problem.
