This volume contains the proceedings of the Ninth Meeting of the'International Study Group for Tryptophan Research'(lSTRY), held at the University of Hamburg, Germany, from October 10 to 14, 1998. At this meeting the recent developments in the field of tryptophan research were presented by leading researchers from all over the world in 81 oral and 48 poster contri­ butions. Research on tryptophan and its derivatives provides an inexhaustible subject. At the conference we tried to compose a multifacetted picture of the recent investiga­ tions through contributions from the major disciplines involved. Thus, we tried to strike a balance between basic research topics and clinical, nutritional or industrial applica­ tions. We offered workshops on tryptophan (in sleep and mood), melatonjn, IDO-acti­ vation and the eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) as a platform for intensive discussion for the participants. In these proceedings many contributions are multidisciplinary and have practical or theoretical implications for different research fields. Hence, we have organized this volume in nine main chapters according to basic disciplines and subjects. We are aware that this classification is artificial, but we hope that it is the best compromise for contributors and readers.

Dermatology is a complex and puzzling world of itching bumps, pim­ ples, and rashes. The multitude of clinically distinct skin diseases, their frequently unresolved pathogenesis, and the exponentially in­ creasing amount of scientific information add to the confusion about skin diseases. The great prevalence of skin diseases makes them an urgent priority for intensive research effort, and although many scientists and academic clinicians are vigorously trying to uncover we are only at the very brink of understanding the etiol­ their secrets, ogy of most dermatoses. The principle mechanisms of general organ pathology (physical, chemical, microbial, ischemic, degenerative, and neoplastic disturb­ ances) are believed to be relatively well understood. In contrast to skin pathomorphology, however little is known regarding the bio­ chemistry and physiology of dermatoses. The difficulty in under­ standing skin diseases may be overcome partially by finding biome­ dical simplifications, and the concept of'oxidative injury in dermatopathology'is just such a simplification. It should, of course, always be kept in mind that no single mechanism alone can explain the pathogenesis of a disease and that there may be a danger of over­ looking other important biological determinants.

Fish oils contain the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), precursors of eicosanoids that are known to reduce inflammation throughout the body, and are thought to have many health benefits. In this book, the authors present topical research in the study of the production, consumption and health benefits of fish oil, including polyunsaturated fatty acids and their dietary implications during pregnancy; plant-derived antioxidants as potential omega-3 pufa stabilizers; stability and behavior of omega-3 food emulsions; the combined effects of omega-3 fatty acids and exercise on cardiovascular disease risk and mortality and fish oil and male fertility.

Tamoxifen has persisted as a widely accepted and administered drug for almost 25 years. Following the many scientific papers and books on the subject, it has remained a very intriguing substance. This, perhaps, is the reason for another monograph on Tamoxifen. It is regrettably true that overviews, even when up to date after exhaustive research - the shibboleth of our cultures -, rapidly lose relevance with the passage of time. Scientists can sometimes be pictured as deep sea divers, who plunge into the unknown in search of a hitherto unknown world. Their descent is exciting, but eventually they must come up for air and integrate their experiences with others who also had to resurface. This book intends to collect and, where possible, to collate recent, but sometimes seemingly unrelated information. To quote Stephane Mallarme:'Everything in the world exists to end up in a book'. Even if this is a tad cynical, it might not be far from the truth. If a little knowledge is a dangerous commodity, one can also add - tongue in cheek - that a vast amount of knowledge can be truly hazardous. It is likely that what might seem as entangled data is confusing, especially for those satisfied with the comfortable interpretation of Tamoxifen as an antiestrogen which has long been found insufficient. The complexity of its mechanisms and effects defies simple explanations and may even seem capricious, but only because of our ignorance.

Wide and fascinating is the field of research on tryptophan, a most versatile amino acid, transformed, as it is, in our organism into many biologically active substances. This volume contains the proceedings of the Eighth International Meeting on Tryptophan Research, held at the University of Padova, Padova, Italy, from June 25 to 29 1995, under the auspices of the University of Padova, National Research Council, Italian Chemical Society-Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Region ofthe Veneto and City of Padova. The meeting was held in Padova to commemorate Prof. Luigi Musajo twenty years after his death and the editors dedicate this book to him in recognition of his pioneering work in tryptophan metabolism. Prof. Osamu Hayaishi delivered the Musajo Memorial Award Lecture: Tryptophan oxygenase. and sleep. Figure I shows the ISTRY President Prof. Simon N. Young presenting the Musajo Memorial Medal to Prof. Hayaishi during the Opening Ceremony. Two hundred scientists from twenty two countries participated in the meeting. These proceedings contain 121 papers encompassing a variety of topics and disciplines.

The first part gives an insight into the mechanisms of substances relevant to antioxidants and food supplements in relation to eye diseases. The consequences and relevance of selenium, one of the most important trace elements, are considered in a separate section. Further, vitamins E and C as well as lutein and zeaxanthin, the physiological macular pigment, are discussed. The second part focuses on both anterior and posterior segment diseases which might be influenced by food supplementation and/or antioxidants. Cytokines had been characterized in the early eighties as communication mole­ cules between immune cells, and between immunocytes and other peripheral cells, such as fibroblasts and endothelial cells. They play a key role in the regulation of the immune response and the coordination of the host response to infection. Based on these biological properties, nobody would have predicted that one decade later cytokines would burst upon neurosciences and permeate into several avenues of current research. In neurology, the connection between cytokines and inflammation, and the demonstration of a pivotal role of some of these molecules in cell death by apoptosis, prompted the investigation of their involvement in several neurological diseases involving an inflammatory component, including multiple sclerosis, brain trauma, stroke, and Alzheimer's disease. This movement started in the late eighties, and the corresponding field of research, known as neuroimmunology, is presently booming. In psychiatry, however, the relationship between cytokines and mental disorders was much less evident and took longer to materialize. The first indication that cytokines might be involved in psychopathology came from cancerology and internal medicine.
