Development of new-generation vaccines is now more challenging than ever, as identifying, purifying and evaluating vaccine antigens is a complex undertaking. Most importantly, once the relevant antigens have been identified, key focus then shifts to the development of suitable delivery systems and formulations to achieve maximum in vivo potency with minimum potential side effects. For 10 years the book series Acute Leukemias has been providing updates on the rapid progress being made internationally concerning this group of diseases. th th This volume comprizes articles presented at the joint IX International and 6 Euro­ pean Symposium on Purine and Pyrimidine Metabolism in Man held in Gmunden, Austria, June 1 through 7, 1997. Since the first of this series of meetings was held in Israel in 1973, conventions were organized every three years in different parts of the world including the USA, Japan, and Europe. The different aspects of purine and pyrimidine metabolism bring together re­ searchers working in molecular genetics, biochemical pharmacology, biochemistry, devel­ opmental biology, immunology, epidemiology and the clinics. Oriented research in the field has been seminal for the development of potent anticancer and antiviral drugs. As the number of genes which are cloned, grows, the understanding of metabolism is increas­ ingly enlarged and might provide leads to further improve therapeutic concepts and to bet­ ter understand mechanisms responsible for the development of resistance against these drugs. In certain diseases purine and pyrimidine analogs represent not only the drugs of choice but in fact are the sole therapeutic alternative at present. The field has also taken an early lead in attempting to correct inborn errors of purine and pyrimidine metabolism by gene therapy. The organization of this meeting involved a large number of people who dedicated their time in an effort to make this symposium a success. We thank the Abstract Review Committee, the International Advisory Board and in particular the Symposium Secretariat for doing a wonderful job.

Members of the phylum Echinodermata are among the most familiar marine invertebrates. Forms such as the sea star have become virtually a symbol of sea life. Used in ancient oriental medicine as a source of bioactive compounds, sea cucumbers, sea stars and sea urchins are now used for the extraction and purification of cytotoxic, haemolytic, antiviral, antifungal, antifouling, antimicrobial and even anti-tumoural activities. In addition, of the five extant classes, sea urchins and sea cucumbers are important economic resources for current fishery and aquaculture. Molecular and cell biological techniques described in this book are, on the one hand, indicative of the improvements made over the years and, on the other, stress the need of their further exploitation for the sustainable production of bioactive compounds and their application in biomedicine.

It is with great pleasure that I write this Foreword to the Proceedings of the International Conference on Behçet's Disease which was held in Berlin in June 2002. This was the first International Conference held under the auspices of the International Society for Behçet's Disease which was founded in 2000 in Seoul. First, I congratulate our colleagues in Berlin, led by Professor Christos Zouboulis of the Department of Dermatology at the Free University of Berlin, for having organised a most successful conference and for having compiled these proceedings so rapidly. It will be realised immediately on scanning the contents of this book that the conference was truly international with 210 participants from 26 countries, as Professor Zouboulis has noted in his preface. These included basic scientists, epidemiologists, pathologists, clinicians and, importantly, representatives from patient organisations. The latter held their own conference alongside the scientific-medical conference to mutual benefit. The combined session of patients and doctors (abstracts on pp 601 – 626) gave the opportunity for an exchange of information and fruitful discussion. The wide ranging scope of the communications is evident from the index and it was most encouraging to see their origin – from all parts of the world, from senior and junior colleagues and, from many different disciplines. Many communications may be regarded as preliminary reports of research in progress and we look forward to seeing the definitive publications in appropriate journals in due course.
