Surgical pathologists play a central role in patient surveillance and treatment by surgeons, radiation oncologists, and medical oncologists. Although salivary gland tumors are uncommon overall, their histopathologic diversity and challenge command the attention of practicing surgical pathologists. Atlas of Salivary Gland Pathology focuses on the diagnostic approach to salivary gland neoplasia—one of the more challenging fields within surgical pathology—emphasizing the need to understand downstream implications with respect to patient surveillance and treatment. The presence of formidable histologic mimicry in salivary gland neoplasia is well-documented in the pathology literature and has also been observed in the consultation practice of the volume editor. This textbook is designed with the needs of practicing surgical pathologists and pathologists-in-training in mind, providing a comprehensive overview of both common and rare salivary gland neoplasms. The primary educational objectives for readers include the following: 1) distinguish benign from low-grade malignant salivary gland neoplasms, 2) effectively use histochemical, immunohistochemical, and cytogenetic studies in challenging cases, 3) understand which diagnoses merit additional surgery and/or adjuvant therapy (radiation, chemotherapy), and 4) enhance pathologist-to-clinician communication in the setting of salivary gland disease.

This book provides a comprehensive description of the pathology of the head and neck region, concentrating especially on those pathologic entities that are unique to or characteristic of the head and neck. The new edition retains the ten chapters of the first edition, all updated and improved, and additionally contains seven entirely new chapters and a more detailed subject index. The number of illustrations has been substantially increased, and various lesions absent in the original edition have been included. Throughout, attention is paid to correlation of pathology with epidemiology, clinical features, pathogenesis, and molecular genetics. Differential diagnosis is addressed, and information is also provided on staging, prognosis, and therapy. The authors include foremost experts in the field, some of whom are senior members of the Working Group on Head and Neck Pathology of the European Society of Pathology.

This book, now in its third edition, aims to promote a deeper understanding of the scientific and clinical basis of nuclear medicine and the new directions in medical imaging. The new edition has been revised and updated to reflect recent changes and to ensure that the contents are in line with likely future directions. The book starts by providing essential information on general pathophysiology, cell structure and cell biology as well as the mechanisms of radiopharmaceutical localization in different tissues and cells. The clinical applications of nuclear medicine are then presented in a series of chapters that cover every major organ system and relate the basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology to the clinical utilization of various scintigraphic modalities. The therapeutic applications of nuclear medicine are discussed in a separate chapter, and the final chapter is devoted to the biologic effects of ionizing radiations, including radiation from medical procedures.

Over the last 25 years it has become more and more evident that salivary gland pathology is by far the subject within head and neck pathology that causes most diagnostic challenges and problems for general pathologists. During courses the author has given, consultants and trainees alike have expressed the lack of a comprehensive, useful book on salivary gland pathology. Such a book needs to be broad and to illustrate almost every variant of all tumor entities. Another important feature to incorporate is the newly gained knowledge about genetics in salivary gland tumors, a knowledge that has emerged during the last 3-4 years only (and is growing continuously). A mapping of the immunophenotypes of salivary gland tumors is neither available today and will greatly benefit in routine diagnostic work.

Metastases determine malignancy. The main attention so far has been focused upon organ metastases. The molecular mechanisms thereof, while far from being totally elucidated, are increasingly well understood. Modern diagnostic tools now enable detection and precise localization of small lesions. In contrast, our knowl­ edge and diagnostic capabilities regarding metastatic spread to the'lymphatic system are rather limited. However, there have re­ cently been a number of interesting advances. It is the aim of this volume to submit these developments to detailed analysis. The therapeutic relevance of enhanced sensitivity in detection of lymph node metastases has to be considered in the light of in­ creased morbidity versus eventual prognostic improvements by modification of therapy. An interesting concept which might im­ prove diagnostic accuracy while reducing operative morbidity is the'sentinel node'technique. Surgical standards are lacking, however, and many fundamental questions pertaining to precise lymphatic mapping remain unanswered. Whether the sentinel node concept is of general relevance or whether it is applicable in only a few organs remains to be determined. This book offers intensive discussion of the concept from methodological and tu­ mor biological viewpoints. World-renowned experts with long­ term involvement in related basic and clinical research provide the reader with a broad survey of actual knowledge together with a critical appraisal of recent and future developments. We sincerely hope this book succeeds in providing an outlook as a reference for all clinicians on future prospects and serving and researchers in this extremely important field.

I wrote the first edition of this work in 1987 with the object of providing a review of the aetiology, pathogenesis and morphological basis of diseases of the ear, nose and throat. Since that time important changes have taken place in the disciplines of both histopathology and otorhinolaryngology. Pathology has shifted its research orientation towards a molecular one; notable successes with new medical and surgical treatments in ENT have resulted in a striking expansion of that field. To provide a precis of the scientific principles of a subject lying between two such mobile territories was a daunt­ ing prospect. Help was indeed necessary and I welcome Henrik Hellquist as the co­ author of this second edition. He has had a longstanding interest in both head and neck and molecular pathology and has not only produced scholarly publications, but has also played an important role in enhancing international cooperation in this combined field.

Nach Organkapiteln geordnet sind alle in der Zytodiagnostik relevanten Erkrankungen übersichtlich dargestellt. Sämtliche Gebiete der Exfoliativ- und Aspirationszytologie unter Einbeziehung der neueren Entwicklungen auf zytotechnischem und diagnostischem Gebiet finden ihren Raum. The second edition of this book has been significantly expanded to meet the demands of the increasing new trend of molecular imaging. A separate chapter on the basis of FDG uptake has been added. Head and neck pathology is increasingly becoming an attractive field for the new generations of pathologists, fully aware that in the era of specialization the information contained in the treatise of general surgical pathology, although extremely valuable to create the basis of their knowledge, does not provide in its full picture the specific knowledge required to meet current diagnostic and prognostic requirements. The book Pathology of the Head and Neck presents in a single volume the most pertinent and updated information needed by the interested readers. Its contents have been divided into ten chapters. The first one covers the spectrum of precursor and neoplastic lesions of the squamous epithelium. It is followed by chapters devoted to nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, maxillofacial skeleton and teeth, salivary glands, nasopharynx and Waldeyer`s ring, larynx and hypopharynx, ear and temporal bone, neck and neck dissection, as well as eye and ocular adnexa. The sentinel lymph node concept is meeting with steadily growing interest and is being extended to the different sites of the primaries. In addition, the concept is being applied in an increasingly sophisticated manner. In this book the practical application of the sentinel node concept is evaluated from the points of view of pathology, radiodiagnosis and nuclear medicine diagnostics, surgical treatment and clinical oncology. The concept is analyzed for breast cancer, malignant melanoma, tumors of the face, oropharynx, lung, gastrointestinal and urogenital tract. The first part of the book describes the function and use of the nuclear medicine equipment, the tracers used, colloid solutions and modern developments in histological and immunohistochemical lymph node investigations, as well as possible pitfalls. The consequences of false-negative results are clearly delineated. In the second part, specific tumor-related problems are described.
