The fifth addition of this classic text that focuses on the diabetic foot continues the tradition of the previous four editions. More specifically, it includes contributions from a distinguished panel of clinicians and researchers, who have either participated in previous editions or are new, who provide up-to-date information on the pathophysiology and management of diabetic foot ulceration. As with the previous editions, it is divided into three sections: the first part focuses on clinical features and diagnosis; the second on pathophysiology; and the third on the management of diabetic foot problems. The main emphasis of the clinical part is on the multidisciplinary approach that has been mainly developed by the world-renowned Joslin-Beth Israel Deaconess Foot Center, which pioneered the management of diabetic lower extremity problems. Also like previous editions, the author panel includes diabetologists, podiatrists, vascular surgeons, infectious disease specialists,orthotists, plastic and orthopedic surgeons, the majority of whom work at the Joslin-Beth Israel Deaconess Foot Center. In addition, the fifth edition not only describes the state-of-the-art current methods in clinical practice but also includes a thorough update of all research progress during the last five years. This updated edition of this timely text will be of significant value to all physicians and researchers with interest in a comprehensive understanding of the diabetic foot.

This book, now in a revised and updated second edition, offers a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in orthopedic nuclear medicine, including the impressive recent advances in the field and the diagnosis of under-recognized conditions on the basis of their imaging patterns. The opening chapters acquaint the reader briefly with anatomic, physiologic, pathologic, and technical concepts crucial to a sound understanding of orthopedic nuclear medicine and its utilization in clinical practice. The imaging diagnosis of skeletal infections, trauma, vascular disorders, metabolic and neoplastic bone diseases, soft tissue calcifications, and joint disorders is then explained in detail. Two entirely new chapters, on bone marrow imaging and hybrid imaging of bone diseases, have been added to this edition. A separate chapter is devoted to the use of radionuclides for the treatment of bone and joint disorders. The book is richly illustrated and amply documents the effectiveness of nuclear medicine in diagnosing bone disease. It will prove invaluable to all with an interest in diagnostic and therapeutic orthopedics, including orthopedists, radiologists, rheumatologists, pediatricians, podiatrists, other clinicians, and all nuclear and molecular imaging professionals.

This atlas fills a gap in the literature by documenting in detail the role of nuclear medicine imaging of infection and inflammation. The pathophysiologic and molecular mechanisms on which radionuclide imaging of infection/inflammation is based are clearly explained, but the prime focus of the book is on the clinical relevance of such procedures. Their impact is demonstrated by a collection of richly illustrated teaching cases that describe the most commonly observed scintigraphic patterns, as well as anatomic variants and technical pitfalls. Due attention is paid to the application of recently developed techniques, including multimodality fusion imaging such as SPECT/CT and PET/CT. Emphasis is placed in particular on the ability of multimodality imaging to increase both the sensitivity and the specificity of radionuclide imaging. This atlas will be an excellent learning tool for residents in nuclear medicine and illuminating for other specialists with an interest in the field.

As chairman of the European Association of Nuclear Medi­ cine (EANM) 2001 annual meeting, I tried to reach two goals: a'universal nuclear medicine'congress where all people could speak and learn using the same language, and a full exploration of the possibility of making a diagnosis through global imaging. I am personally convinced that nuclear med­ icine techniques in the detection of infection and inflamma­ tion are essential, and in the near future their role and clinical impact will be impressive. As stated during the meeting, this topic will be one of the major and expanding fields of interest for nuclear medicine. During the post-congress meetings organized in Capri by Alberto Signore and Mauro Liberatore for each topic, there was a leading expert for the clinical, radiological and nuclear medicine aspects. This interaction was crucial for the quality of the discussion and the definition of flow charts that will be useful for all the medical community. These meetings, where for each topic there is full coverage of all the aspects of imaging, are, in my opinion, the most fruitful and useful for the progression and diffusion of nu­ clear medicine procedures. It has been several years since the nuclear medicine community was presented with an outstanding text on bone scintigraphy. Over a span of three decades the value of this enormously important clinical modality has remained undiminished, despite the introduction of new techniques for examining bone, especially magnetic re- nance imaging and positron emission tomography (PET). In fact the positron em- ting sodium fluoride-F-18 was employed as a bone imaging agent over 30 years ago and now finds new value as a potent tool in PET diagnosis. Dr. Elgazzar, a renowned nuclear medicine physician, researcher, author and teacher, has produced an important text on bone scintigraphy at a time when new concepts for use of this modality are on the horizon. His presentation is well gro- ded in the basic sciences and in pathophysiology, an approach which brings a - markable coherence to the text. Correlative imaging concepts are also carefully th- aded through these chapters. The production of a quality bone scan, which will not miss relevant clinical fi- ings because of errors in scanning technique, is not a simple matter, and Dr. Elgazzar emphasizes the caution and care with which the production of every bone scan must be approached, as well as the pitfalls in clinical interpretation. Well illustrated, and containing many tables to succinctly summarize the concepts being covered, this text is remarkably accessible despite its depth and breadth.
