Huntington's disease (HD) is a fatal, inherited, neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by chorea, motor instabilities, psychiatric manifestations and cognitive decline. This book claims that good science is often a form of betting on the outcome of research-the stakes being time and reputation and someone's money. Some scientists, to be sure, claim they avoid leaning this way or that, in the name of keeping an open mind. I recommend making expectations explicit in order to design controls against unconscious influence, formulate alternative outcomes more clearly-and to add zest. Both the immediately upcoming experiment and the expected result of many long years of work by many people after one is gone are proper subjects for betting or the most informed and serious guessing. The working title for this collection of new and old papers was for some time'Betting on how brains work'and then'Betting on brains.'It goes without saying that the book will not answer the title question but will speak to it, in particular making a series of propositions that I think are more likely to be confirmed by future research than the alternatives we can presently recognize. It follows that a significant message, implied in many chapters of the book is this.

This book is written for the clinician, students, and practitioners of neuropsychology, neuropsychiatry, and behavioral neurology. It has been my intent throughout to present a synthesis of ideas and research findings. I have reviewed thousands of articles and research reports and have drawn extensively from diverse sources in philosophy, psychol­ ogy, neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychiatry, physiology, and neuroanatomy in order to produce this text. Of course I have also drawn from my own experience as a clinician and research scientist in preparing this work and in this regard some of my own biases and interests are represented. I have long sought to understand the human mind and the phenomena we experience as conscious awareness. After many years of studying a variety of Western and Eastern psychologists and philosophers, including the Buddhist, Taoist, and Hindu philosophical systems, I began, while still an undergraduate student, to formulate my own theory of the mind. I felt, though, that what I had come upon were only pieces of half the puzzle. What I knew of the brain was minimal. Indeed, it came as quite a surprise when one day I came across the journal Brain as I was browsing through the periodicals section of the library. I was awed. An entire journal devoted to the brain was quite a revelation. Nevertheless, although intrigued by the possibilities, I resisted.

In this book we are trying to illuminate the persistent and nag­ ging questions of how mind, life, and the essence of being relate to brain mechanisms. We do that not because we have a commit­ ment to bear witness to the boring issue of reductionism but be­ cause we want to know more about what it's all about. How, in­ deed, does the brain work? How does it allow us to love, hate, see, cry, suffer, and ultimately understand Kepler's laws? We try to uncover clues to these staggering questions by con­ sidering the results of our studies on the bisected brain. Several years back, one of us wrote a book with that title, and the ap­ proach was to describe how brain and behavior are affected when one takes the brain apart. In the present book, we are ready to put it back together, and go beyond, for we feel that split-brain studies are now at the point of contributing to an understanding of the workings of the integrated mind. We are grateful to Dr. Donald Wilson of the Dartmouth Medi­ cal School for allowing us to test his patients. This volume contains the papers presented at the 15th International Symposium on Hearing (ISH), which was held at the Hotel Regio, Santa Marta de Tormes, Salamanca, Spain, between 1st and 5th June 2009. Since its inception in 1969, this Symposium has been a forum of excellence for debating the neurophysiological basis of auditory perception, with computational models as tools to test and unify physiological and perceptual theories. Every paper in this symposium includes two of the following: auditory physiology, psychoph- ics or modeling. The topics range from cochlear physiology to auditory attention and learning. While the symposium is always hosted by European countries, p- ticipants come from all over the world and are among the leaders in their fields. Patients with cancer can suffer from a bewildering variety of neurologic signs and symptoms. The neurologic symptoms are often more disabling than the primary cancer. Symptoms including confusion, seizures, pain and paralysis may be a result of either metastases to the nervous system or one of several nonmetastatic complications of cancer. The physician who promptly recognizes neurologic symptoms occurring in a patient with cancer and makes an early diagnosis may prevent the symptoms from becoming permanently disabling or sometimes lethal. This monograph, an update of the first edition published in 1995, is divided into 3 sections. The first classifies the wide variety of disorders that can cause neurologic symptoms the patient with cancer, discusses the pathophysiology of nervous system metastases, the pathophysiology and treatment of brain edema and the approach to supportive care of common neurologic symptoms such as seizures, pain, and side effects of commonly used supportive care agents. With the growth of combined clinical neurophysiology fellowship training programs and their corresponding “pan-physiology” board examinations, there has been an increased need for educational materials that span the range of clinical neurophysiology topics. The Clinical Neurophysiology Primer aims to meet this need by providing a broad and intentionally basic treatment of the most central topics within clinical neurophysiology. The Clinical Neurophysiology Primer initially took shape within the clinical neurophysiology sections at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Rhode Island Hospital, as an outgrowth of their fellowships'didactic lecture series.
