This first volume of The Collected English Papers of Wolfgang Giegerich takes its title from Giegerich's ground-breaking paper, On the Neurosis of Psychology, or The Third of the Two, originally published in Spring Journal in 1977. The third referred to in the title is psychology itself as the theory in which the two, patient and analyst, are contained as they engage with one another in the analytic process. By applying to psychology itself the ideas that analytical psychology draws upon when thinking about the patient, Giegerich establishes the basis for a psychology that defines itself as the discipline of interiority. Topics include Neumann's history of consciousness, Jung's thought of the self, the question of a Jungian identity, projection, the origin of psychology, and more.

Helene Deutsch was one of the most famous psychoanalysts to emerge from Freud's immediate circle in Vienna. Best known for her writings on female psychology, she was also one of the great teachers of psychoanalysis. As the founding president of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Training Institute, she confirmed her stature in the history of psychoanalysis by cultivating a whole younger generation of influential analysts. Deutsch was tolerant and open-minded, both as a theoretician and teacher, but, as Paul Roazen remarks in his introduction, independence and an absence of fanaticism can mean a temporary fading out of influence. For the first time, Deutsch's major professional contributions are brought together for permanent consideration. This volume documents her enduringly valuable exploration of the complexities of the psychology of women's experience.Deutsch remained essentially faithful to the Freudian canon. Nonetheless, and throughout these writings, she developed ideas on the subject of femininity that were often at odds with those of her mentor. Her use of Freud's theories aimed to encourage toleration of human diversity and to modify his model of sexuality according to the particular circumstances of women's lives. It was Deutsch who introduced motherhood as a central concern of psychoanalysis by stressing how the psychological dimension of reproduction was different for men and women and how this uniquely feminine capacity had its effects on the entire psychology of women.The same commitment to human diversity informs her much-misunderstood work on the clinical problems of female sexual dysfunction. While accepting the Freudian goal of sexual gratification, Deutsch argues that sublimation through work was a key value in its own right This is illustrated in'George Sand: A Woman's Destiny,'a brilliant early example of psychobiography. This volume of Deutsch's classic papers, several appearing in English for the first time, will be of interest to psychologists, intellectual historians, and women's studies specialists.

The idea of the International Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences (IPBN) was born as a result of the many occasions where, in the course of working on review articles or meta-analyses (MA) the author frequently encountered papers that needed to be included but were never translated into English. Usually an English abstract is available but this is never sufficient for the purposes of a detailed critical review or a close examination of the data as in meta-analyses. Most researchers simply ignore the published work and is observes the review or the MA uses English as a limiting term in the initial searches for relevant literature, thus weeding out all works done all over the world in other languages. While this is unfortunate, it is understandable as it is usually very expensive to accurately translate such data papers. Furthermore, while working on reviews or MAs one rapidly discovers the very many important works that were not published in English.

This paper reviews data on the prevalence of sexual assault among servicemembers, predictors of disclosure, efforts to improve disclosure, victim needs, and DoD efforts to provide necessary resources in the immediate aftermath of a sexual assault.

Military personnel (Regular, Reserve, National Guard) are deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq for various lengths and number of tours, leaving jobs, family and college for extended periods to serve our country. While deployed, they are in harm's way 24/7. Some are severely wounded physically. Many others are wounded emotionally and behaviorally. Family members are all affected by deployments. They are supported through Family Services groups during deployment. Veterans and families receive assistance upon return into the community. Veterans organizations provide additional support. Increasing numbers of Veterans return with PTSD, anxiety, depression, somatic problems and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), directly affecting relations among spouses, children, friends, relatives and fellow employees in our communities. Particularly disturbing is the number of suicides occurring among military personnel. Most affected is the returning veteran. Adjusting to changed lives and re-adjusting to families and community is not always smooth. How can communities better understand these adjustments, support returning veterans and become involved in re-integrating them back into communities? What resources are available? What is the role of mental health professionals? Who do they network and interact with? Do they have a role with other healthcare providers, public health, hospitals, veterans organizations, veterans administration, military support groups, etc? How can these groups strategically plan how to address and respond to needs in a combined effort? What issues need to be addressed? The First Episode Psychosis Services Fidelity Scale (FEPS-FS 1.0) is a highly reliable scale that assesses the degree to which mental health teams deliver specialized evidence-based care to people experiencing a first episode psychosis. The scale comprises 35 components each rated on a 1 to 5 scale. It has been used in the United States, Canada and Europe. It can be used for on site fidelity reviews, remote fidelity assessment or self-report. Published papers document its psychometric features and allow comparisons with a representative sample of US programs. It is suitable for research, quality improvement and accreditation.The Manual provides a practical guide for scoring a FEPS program against the criteria set out in the fidelity scale. It is designed to increase the reliability and consistency of ratings across different sites and assessors. Who will step up to meet the challenge of the next rural crisis? Rural practice presents important yet challenging issues for psychology, especially given uneven population distribution, high levels of need, limited availability of rural services, and ongoing migration to urban centers. It is critical that mental health professionals and first responders in rural areas become aware of recent research, training and approaches to crisis intervention, traumatology, compassion fatigue, disaster mental health, critical incident stress management, post-traumatic stress and related areas in rural environments. Critical issues facing rural areas include: Physical issues such as land, air, and water resources, cheap food policy, chemicals and pesticides, animal rights, corruption in food marketing and distribution, and land appropriation for energy development. Quality of life issues such as rural America's declining share of national wealth, problems of hunger, education, and rural poverty among rural populations of farmers and ranchers. Direct service issues include the need to accommodate a wide variety of mental health difficulties, client privacy and boundaries, and practical challenges. At the request of the Health Resources and Services Administration, the National Academies Forum on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders hosted a public workshop in April 2024 to explore mental health care services related to anxiety and mood disorders in women. Evidence from two highly regarded three-decade NIMH follow-up studies of schizophrenia and other psychoses, conducted by Courtenay Harding and her research team, have revealed that one half to two-thirds of even the most disabled schizophrenia patients achieved significant improvement, and even recovery, over time. These findings are consistent with those from nine other decades'-long studies from across the world, as well as many shorter-term investigations as well. But the field of psychiatry has nevertheless largely failed to accept that recovery is possible for most psychotic patients. Existing systems are not prepared to provide the mental health care services needed by the growing population of older adults.
