This book constitutes the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Physiological Computing Systems, PhyCS 2016, held in Lisbon, Portugal, in July 2016.The 12 papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. They contribute to the understanding of relevant trends of current research on physiological computing systems, including brain-computer interfaces, virtual reality, psychophysiological load assessment in unconstrained scenarios, body tracking and movement pattern recognition, emotion recognition, machine learning applied to diabetes and hypertension, tangible biofeedback technologies, multimodal sensor data fusion, and deep learning for hand gesture recognition.

Machine learning (ML) is the fastest growing field in computer science, and Health Informatics (HI) is amongst the greatest application challenges, providing future benefits in improved medical diagnoses, disease analyses, and pharmaceutical development. However, successful ML for HI needs a concerted effort, fostering integrative research between experts ranging from diverse disciplines from data science to visualization. Tackling complex challenges needs both disciplinary excellence and cross-disciplinary networking without any boundaries. Following the HCI-KDD approach, in combining the best of two worlds, it is aimed to support human intelligence with machine intelligence. This state-of-the-art survey is an output of the international HCI-KDD expert network and features 22 carefully selected and peer-reviewed chapters on hot topics in machine learning for health informatics; they discuss open problems and future challenges in order to stimulate further research and international progress in this field.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Information Technology in Bio- and Medical Informatics, ITBAM 2016, held in Porto, Portugal, in September 2016, in conjunction with DEXA 2016.The 9 revised long papers presented together with 11 poster papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 26 submissions. The papers address the following topics: biomedical data analysis and warehousing; information technologies in brain science; and social networks and process analysis in biomedicine.

Prolonged life expectancy along with the increasing complexity of medicine and health services raises health costs worldwide dramatically. Whilst the smart health concept has much potential to support the concept of the emerging P4-medicine (preventive, participatory, predictive, and personalized), such high-tech medicine produces large amounts of high-dimensional, weakly-structured data sets and massive amounts of unstructured information. All these technological approaches along with “big data” are turning the medical sciences into a data-intensive science. To keep pace with the growing amounts of complex data, smart hospital approaches are a commandment of the future, necessitating context aware computing along with advanced interaction paradigms in new physical-digital ecosystems. The very successful synergistic combination of methodologies and approaches from Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD) offers ideal conditions for the vision to support human intelligence with machine learning. The papers selected for this volume focus on hot topics in smart health; they discuss open problems and future challenges in order to provide a research agenda to stimulate further research and progress.

One of the grand challenges in our digital world are the large, complex and often weakly structured data sets, and massive amounts of unstructured information. This “big data” challenge is most evident in biomedical informatics: the trend towards precision medicine has resulted in an explosion in the amount of generated biomedical data sets. Despite the fact that human experts are very good at pattern recognition in dimensions of <= 3; most of the data is high-dimensional, which makes manual analysis often impossible and neither the medical doctor nor the biomedical researcher can memorize all these facts. A synergistic combination of methodologies and approaches of two fields offer ideal conditions towards unraveling these problems: Human–Computer Interaction (HCI) and Knowledge Discovery/Data Mining (KDD), with the goal of supporting human capabilities with machine learning.This state-of-the-art survey is an output of the HCI-KDD expert network and features 19 carefully selected and reviewed papers related to seven hot and promising research areas: Area 1: Data Integration, Data Pre-processing and Data Mapping; Area 2: Data Mining Algorithms; Area 3: Graph-based Data Mining; Area 4: Entropy-Based Data Mining; Area 5: Topological Data Mining; Area 6 Data Visualization and Area 7: Privacy, Data Protection, Safety and Security.

SouthCHI is the successor of the USAB Conference series and promotes all aspects of human-computer interaction. The Workgroup Human–Computer Interaction & Usability Engineering (HCI&UE) of the Austrian Computer Society (OCG) serves as a platform for interdisciplinary - change, research and development. While human–computer interaction (HCI) tra- tionally brings together psychologists and computer scientists, usability engineering (UE) is a software engineering discipline and ensures the appropriate implementation of applications. Our 2008 topic was Human–Computer Interaction for Education and Work (HCI4EDU), culminating in the 4th annual Usability Symposium USAB 2008 held during November 20–21, 2008 in Graz, Austria (http://usab-symposium.tugraz.at). As with the field of Human–Computer Interaction in Medicine and Health Care (HCI4MED), which was our annual topic in 2007, technological performance also increases exponentially in the area of education and work. Learners, teachers and knowledge workers are ubiquitously confronted with new technologies, which are available at constantly lower costs. However, it is obvious that within our e-Society the knowledge acquired at schools and universities – while being an absolutely necessary basis for learning – may prove insufficient to last a whole life time. Working and learning can be viewed as parallel processes, with the result that li- long learning (LLL) must be considered as more than just a catch phrase within our society, it is an undisputed necessity. Today, we are facing a tremendous increase in educational technologies of all kinds and, although the influence of these new te- nologies is enormous, we must never forget that learning is both a basic cognitive and a social process – and cannot be replaced by technology.
