Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), are a set of more than 30 health disorders associated with both the temporomandibular joints and the muscles and tissues of the jaw. TMDs have a range of causes and often co-occur with a number of overlapping medical conditions, including headaches, fibromyalgia, back pain and irritable bowel syndrome. TMDs can be transient or long-lasting and may be associated with problems that range from an occasional click of the jaw to severe chronic pain involving the entire orofacial region. Everyday activities, including eating and talking, are often difficult for people with TMDs, and many of them suffer with severe chronic pain due to this condition. Common social activities that most people take for granted, such as smiling, laughing, and kissing, can become unbearable. This dysfunction and pain, and its associated suffering, take a terrible toll on affected individuals, their families, and their friends. Individuals with TMDs often feel stigmatized and invalidated in their experiences by their family, friends, and, often, the health care community. Misjudgments and a failure to understand the nature and depths of TMDs can have severe consequences - more pain and more suffering - for individuals, their families and our society. Temporomandibular Disorders: Priorities for Research and Care calls on a number of stakeholders - across medicine, dentistry, and other fields - to improve the health and well-being of individuals with a TMD. This report addresses the current state of knowledge regarding TMD research, education and training, safety and efficacy of clinical treatments of TMDs, and burden and costs associated with TMDs. Chronically ill people have to find ways of living with their illness and overcoming the multifarious challenges they face in everyday life that suit their individual needs. In the field of medicine, the use of self-management and its corresponding programmes is becoming increasingly important. Indeed, the first approaches to promoting self-management have already been implemented in the German healthcare system. This anthology provides an overview of the current debate on this issue and describes the implementation of the INSEA initiative, which aims to promote self-management and active living among the chronically ill in Germany. The contributions from different European countries that it contains present various national self-management strategies and how they can be applied. By outlining appropriate training programmes in this regard as examples, the book also highlights the range of potential approaches that can be used to promote self-management among the chronically ill.

Poor health literacy has many negative consequences for achieving the quadruple aim of better care, improving the health of the community and the population, providing affordable care, and improving the work life of health care providers, and those consequences disproportionately affect those individuals with disabilities and those who experience health disparities. To better understand how health literacy, health equity, and health disparities intersect for individuals living with disabilities, the Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity and the Elimination of Health Disparities and the Roundtable on Health Literacy jointly sponsored a workshop that was held on June 14, 2016, in Washington, DC. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Despite sustained debate and progress the evolving thing that is evidence based nursing or practice (EBP) continues to dangle a variety of conceptual and practical loose threads. Moreover, when we think about what is being asked of students and registered or licenced practitioners in terms of EBP, it is difficult not to concede that this ‘ask'is in many instances quite large and, occasionally, it may be unachievable. EBP has and continues to improve patient, client and user care. Yet significant questions concerning its most basic elements remain unresolved and, if nurses are to contribute to the resolution or reconfiguration of these questions then, as a first step, we must acknowledge their existence. From a range of international standpoints and perspectives, contributors to this book focus on aspects of EBP that require development. This focus is always robust and at times it is unashamedly provocative. Contributors challenge readers to engage with anomalies that surround the subject and readers are asked to consider the often precarious assumptions that underpin key aspects of EBP. While both conflict and concord are evident among the various offerings presented here, the book nonetheless creates and sustains a narrative that is bigger or more substantial than the sum of individual parts. Health Promotion in Nursing Practice

In the United States, chronic diseases currently account for 70 percent of all deaths, and close to 48 million Americans report a disability related to a chronic condition. Today, about one in four Americans have multiple diseases and the prevalence and burden of chronic disease in the elderly and racial/ethnic minorities are notably disproportionate. Chronic disease has now emerged as a major public health problem and it threatens not only population health, but our social and economic welfare. Living Well with Chronic Disease identifies the population-based public health actions that can help reduce disability and improve functioning and quality of life among individuals who are at risk of developing a chronic disease and those with one or more diseases. The book recommends that all major federally funded programmatic and research initiatives in health include an evaluation on health-related quality of life and functional status. Also, the book recommends increasing support for implementation research on how to disseminate effective longterm lifestyle interventions in community-based settings that improve living well with chronic disease. Living Well with Chronic Disease uses three frameworks and considers diseases such as heart disease and stroke, diabetes, depression, and respiratory problems. The book's recommendations will inform policy makers concerned with health reform in public- and private-sectors and also managers of communitybased and public-health intervention programs, private and public research funders, and patients living with one or more chronic conditions.

Strategies in the evaluation of psychosocial health care interventions for people with physical and/or mental health problems are useful and important to practitioners and researchers. However, there is limited evidence in health care journals and information in books about this important topic. The purposes of this edited book are two-fold. First, the book will highlight and discuss a variety of methods used in evaluation research, which are mainly categorized as process and outcome-based evaluation. Second, it will disseminate up-to-date research evidence on a variety of psychotherapeutic, educational and supportive models of psychosocial interventions for people with physical or mental health problems, including those with cancer, heart failure and cardiovascular diseases, schizophrenia, dementia, first-time pregnancy, and pediatric surgery, as well as for their family caregivers. Most of research studies included in this book were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with repeated measures design. However, a few are focused on not only health outcomes but also the process of the intervention or study. Interestingly, the study populations in these research reports consisted of people in different stages of lifespan development, ranging from young children undergoing surgery (Chapter 2), adolescents and adults with schizophrenia (Chapter 4), women with first-time pregnancy (Chapter 5), to older people with dementia (Chapter 7), as well as their adult family members and parents. Discussion and evaluation of strategies for multi-component psychosocial interventions are limited. This edited book, which reports research using different study methods and designs of approaches to psychosocial interventions for different groups of people with physical and/or mental health problems, and also for their family caregivers, offers highly useful empirical evidence, or can be used as a reference guide, for health care practitioners and researchers. Another two valuable aspects of this book are to inform health care professionals and researchers that some effective models of psychosocial intervention commonly used in Western countries can be adopted, with or without modifications, for people in Asian populations. Also, the book will enhance evidence-based practice and research in Chinese populations, which comprise the largest population in the world but, have received limited attention in terms of health care and interventions.

In January 2004, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) hosted the 1st Annual Crossing the Quality Chasm Summit, convening a group of national and community health care leaders to pool their knowledge and resources with regard to strategies for improving patient care for five common chronic illnesses.
