Sex/gender-specific medicine (SGM) is defined as the practice of medicine based on the understanding that biology and social roles are important in men and women for prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Current research demonstrates differences in disease incidence, symptomatology, morbidity, and mortality depending on sex and gender. Sex/gender-specific medicine is a fundamental aspect of tailored therapy and precision medicine. Therefore, the variables must be considered in medical education and practice as well as in research models ranging from human participants, animals and cells. This concept could be applied in the whole clinical areas from Neuroscience, Psychiatry, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and Rehabilitation, etc. Nowadays estrogen is known to play a key role in the prevention of colon cancer and in the resistant progression of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, especially in women. This book covers the sex/gender-specific medicine in the whole clinical areas in the adults as well as in the pediatrics. In addition, research results of basic science are also introduced in the colon cancer and Alzheimer's disease.

First published in 1967, Human Guinea Pigs is a report by a consultant physician on the implications of medical research on both the medical profession and on the men, women and children who are the subjects of medical experiments. It suggests that there are limits to the permissibility of experiments on humans. It points out how it has become a common occurrence for medical investigators to take risks with patients of which the patients themselves are frequently unaware, and to submit them to mental and physical distress and possible hazards which in no way are necessitated by or have connection with the treatment of the disease from which are suffering. The author describes a number of experiments which, in his opinion, raise important problems. In his view, medical research must go on, but there must be acknowledged and observed safeguards for patients. This book will be of interest to students of medicine, ethics, law, politics and social work.

Current knowledge concerning both morphological and functional cryptorchid-related alterations in the various testicular compartments is summarized in this valuable new publication. Damage to the germinal epithelium and resulting infertility in both humans and experimental animals as well as the degree of damage to the different stages of germ cell development is discussed. In addition, information concerning hormonal therapy and orchidopexy to reverse cryptorchid-related damage is provided. Disopyramid erwies sich bei unseren Untersuchungen als effektives, evtl. dramatisch wirkendes Antiarrhythmikum bei ventrikulärer Extrasystolie. In 30% unserer Fälle blieb es jedoch wirkungslos, ohne daß dies mit dem Blutspiegel zu erklären wäre. Bei supraventrikulärer Extrasystolie zeigte sich keine Wirkung. Der Einfluß auf die Schrittmacherreizschwelle bei Patienten mit Herzschritt­ macher lag bei Anwendung therapeutischer Dosen im Rahmen dessen, was auch bei anderen Antiarrhythmika beobachtet wird (Chinidin, Ajmalin, Prokainamid). This is the story of steroid-protein interactions as one investigator sees it. Following the general concept of this monograph series, it emphasizes the results and interpretations obtained in the author's laboratory, and is therefore a subjective account. Recognizing, how­ ever, that the discussion of the subject would be incomplete if the material were limited to one scientist's work, the essential achieve­ ments of other investigators have been incorporated. An effort has thus been made to give a balanced presentation and to enable the reader to see in perspective the varied facets of the interactions between steroids and proteins. Since this is the first comprehensive treatment of the topic, it seems appropriate to go to the roots, and try to find out how it all started. The first chapters, therefore, take the reader to the laboratories of those who very early conceived the significance of the attachment of dyes, drugs, and other conspicuous molecules to those colloids called proteins. The discovery of the steroid hormones set the stage for meaningful investigation of their interaction with proteins of various origins and functions - a process which is continuing today with increasing vigor.

This volume was planned to provide a comprehensive survey of the role of the anabolic-androgenic steroids in the vital economy exclusive of the androgenic (sexual) functions. It seemed appropriate to bring together all of this information in an organized fashion in one volume at this time not only to serve as a source of information but also to indicate and suggest areas that need further exploration. The anabolic action of the steroid hormones has gone through a period of great activity in both basic and clinical research. A complete understanding of the manifold anabolic effects still remains to be elucidated and the art of clinical application is only gradually becoming apparent. This volume should be useful not only to the experienced investigator in both basic and clinical research but also for the novice. Furthermore, it should serve as a source of information for the careful use of these steroids in certain metabolic diseases. These steroids have had wide clinical application with variable results. In many instances further careful exploration is suggested. Other instances have demonstrated varying degrees of usefulness.

Somewhere I heard a story of a bridge and a painter. The bridge was enormous and was made all of metal, and the painter's job was to keep it from rusting. He would start at one end and slowly proceed, day by day, month by month, toward the other end, painting the bridge. But no sooner would he finish with the painting than the bridge would begin to rust again. The rust, too, would start at one end and slowly proceed toward the other end, systematically destroying the painter's endeavor. And so the painter would return to where he had started, and begin painting again, slowly proceeding toward the other end of the bridge, always just one step ahead of the rust. And if the story is true, the painter might still be painting that bridge-a modern Sisyphus! During the writing of this book, the story of the painter and his bridge kept coming to mind. The field the book covers has been developing so rapidly that, like the painter, I too had to return to where I had started and fight the rust of obsolescence. But unlike the painter, I had a deadline to meet, which constituted a point of no return. And so, sending off this manuscript, I have no choice but to watch the fruits of my endeavor be overtaken by the rust.
