After more than a decade of successful application of cardiac pace­ makers in the therapy of cardiac rhythm disorders, technological and clinical experience has reached a level, at which a technical survey of this field should be of general interest and might promote the further improvement of pace­ maker therapy. The papers contained in this book were presented at the International Symposium on Advances in Pacemaker Technology, held at Erlangen on Sep­ tember 26 and 27,1974 under the auspices of the Societas Physica Medica Erlangensis. One of the traditional aims of the Societas has been the advance­ ment of diagnosis and therapy by the adaptation of medical skill to modern technology and scientific engineering conceptions. The major objective of this book is to present, in expanded form, the lectures given by internationally known basic and clinical researchers in the field of artificial pacing of the heart and to make that information available to a wider public. The experience discussed covers the principles and main methods of pacing using implantable and external, fixed rate, R-wave or P-wave triggered pacemakers with electrodes placed in the myocardium either surgically or transvenously, and powered by zinc-mercury oxide or rechargeable batteries. Particular emphasis was put on problems of pressing importance at the present time, such as the increase of pacemaker longevity with lithium­ iodide and nuclear-powered batteries or improved electrodes, as well as the postoperative management of a steadily increasing number of pacemaker patients.

The 4th International Workshop on Adaptive Optics for Industry and Me- cine took place in Munster, ¨ Germany, from October 19 to October 24, 2003. The series of International Workshops on Adaptive Optics for Industry and Medicine beganwiththe?rstworkshopinShatura/Russiain1997,thesecond workshop took place in Durham/England in 1999, and the third workshop was held in Albuquerque/USA in 2001. The workshop series started out as a true grassroots movement and kept an informal spirit throughout all four workshops. Many personal friendships and scienti?c collaborations have been formed at these meetings. This fourth workshop was supposed to be held in Beijing, China. H- ever, the program committee decided in May 2003 to move the workshop to Munster ¨ due the general perception that the SARS (Severe Acute R- piratory Syndrome) cases reported in China could lead to a large epidemic. Despite this rather short notice the workshop in Munster ¨ was attended by about 70 people. Incidentally, the workshop coincided with the 50th anniv- sary of adaptive optics, because it was October 1953 when Horace Babcock published his famous paper “The possibilities of compensating astronomical seeing” in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Paci?c.

Gait analysis is valuable in medical research and diagnosis, by delivering information that helps in choosing methods of intervention and rehabilitation that are beneficial for a patient. In gait laboratories, cameras or IMUs are often used to gather gait patterns. This thesis explores the possibility of using sensors below the floor as a gait data source. These sensors measure changes in the electrical capacitance to recognise steps. The construction is designed for indoor environments and is hidden under common flooring layer types. Therefore, it is very robust and suitable for practical use in daily clinical routine. A formal framework was developed to represent the measurements, considering the special characteristics of this floor sensor. The data were then used as input for artificial neural networks that were applied on classification and regression tasks. In a feature construction and extraction approach, the spatial spread of footfalls was derived and used with a feed-forward neural network. Then, in a feature learning approach, the time series data was transformed into a local receptive field, and used with a recurrent neural network. Three studies were conducted for the goals to distinguish between people with low and high risk of falling, to estimate age, and to recognise walking challenges as an external gait intervention. The combination of a robust and hidden floor sensor and machine learning opens up the prospect of future applications in health and care.

Orphan diseases pose diagnostic challenges due to complex pathologies, limited epidemiological data, and clinical experience. The development of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods has the potential to enhance the accuracy of decision support systems, improving diagnosis outcomes for rare disease patients. This research aims to create a repository for characterizing rare diseases by collecting past experiences of diagnosed patients, reducing gaps in symptom interpretation. This interdisciplinary study, in collaboration with medical experts, has resulted in a computer-aided diagnostic support system utilizing statistical analysis and machine learning algorithms. The system incorporates disease profile aggregation, pattern recognition, and information comparison. An interactive data visualization platform has been established to promote intuitive understanding and evaluate system diagnosis with graphics-based disease feature comparison. It supports medical practitioners during the diagnostic process by presenting visually appealing information. The patient-oriented inquiry mechanism efficiently reduces unnecessary questions while providing a reliable diagnosis based on probability. By combining statistical learning with the visualization module, the system can discover disease-related symptom patterns, offering new means for diagnosing rare disorders. The supplementary diagnosis prediction mechanism can be applied effectively to analyze different groups in surveyswith closed-ended questions.

This book presents a comprehensive theory of the ethics and political philosophy of public health surveillance based on reciprocal obligations among surveillers, those under surveillance, and others potentially affected by surveillance practices. Training for research is only available in a few places in the world, so that usually the researcher has to learn to master every step by himself. This entails planning the research, finding out how to obtain funds, searching the literature, analysing the data statistically, preparing visual material and slides, speaking about it in public, writing it up for journals and so on. Books on various aspects of this subject are readily obtain­ able but this is an attempt to deal with all the steps that are necessary from the start to the finish, and chapters have been planned sequentially with this in mind. Although most of the authors are doctors of medicine, it should help those in any area of science where the undertaking and publishing of research is important. Marco Sorgi conceived the idea of the book and, during an appointment in the University of Birmingham, invited Clifford Hawkins to help in achieving its delivery. May the effort be found to be worthwhile.

The publication of proceedings of conferences has often been so delayed that they are useless both to active workers in the field and for cur­ rently appropriate teaching. Rapid publication on the other hand may impose very difficult conditions upon authors and demand unwelcome sacrifices. We wish to thank the many speakers at ESCAT for their co­ operation in providing manuscripts and to apologise to those unable for reasons beyond their control to fall in with the rigorous editorial policy. The previous edition of this directory extended its coverage of the Far East, Australasia and Latin America, areas previously under-represented. For this new edition emphasis has been given to increasing the number of entries for organizations from Britain, the United States and Australia, and particular attention has been paid to new political organizations in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The number of entries included has gone up to over 68,000 of which over 9,000 are new or amended. Cross-references from defunct organizations in the previous edition have been deleted, and references (indicated by ex and now) added for organizations which have changed their name since the previous edition. As before, the range of organizations included is broad and only purely local organizations have been excluded. This directory therefore lists official and unofficial organizations, national and international, on all SUbjects: political, economic and social. Acronyms of parent bodies of subsidiary organizations are given where appropriate and equivalencies are used to link acronyms in different languages for the same organization. Further information about the organizations listed can be found in the sources listed in the bibliography. Philosophen, Naturwissenschaftler und Mediziner – von der Biographie zur Idee….Anthropologie ist der Versuch des Menschen, sein Herkommen und seine Möglichkeiten zu ergründen und nach seinem Wesen und seiner Natur zu fragen. In den letzten zweieinhalb Jahrtausenden waren es in der Regel die Philosophen, die anthropologischen Ehrgeiz zeigten und das menschliche Wesen erkennen und in Worte fassen wollten. Immanuel Kant erachtete es geradezu als die hauptsächliche Aufgabe seiner Zunft, die Frage „Was ist der Mensch“ lösen zu helfen.Im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert gesellten sich zu den Philosophen anthropologisch interessierte Ärzte und Naturforscher wie Lichtenberg, der postulierte, dass der Mensch geistig und materiell zugleich ist. Und dass es sich bei ihm um ein zutiefst seltsames Geschöpf handelt, das auf prekären Grenzlinien existiert, wird nach den turbulenten und erschütternden gesellschaftlich-historischen Ereignissen des 20. Why write this book? Of all the intricate components of the human body, the central nervous system is the most responsive to the environment, detecting and responding to changes immediately. Its complexity, however, also means that it is still one of nature's best-kept secrets. Considering that the exploration of space is often thought of as the final frontier in the discovery of our origin and the preparation for our future, Neuroscience in Space is a book addressing the last, and greatest, scientific frontier. All living things on Earth have evolved in the presence of gravity and all of their biological systems have anatomical and physiological mechanisms designed to interpret and measure the force of gravity. However, in the near weightlessness of space, the sensory systems that provide basic information regarding linear acceleration no longer function as they did on Earth. As a result, most if not all, physiological systems dependent on the body's central nervous system are in flux until a new microgravity state is realized. This includes adaptation of basic life sustaining functions such as blood pressure control and cardiac function, as well as other critical functions for everyday activities including balance, coordinated movement in three-dimensional space, and the regulation of sleep. Bones that supported body weight on the ground no longer have that load to bear. They begin to lose mass and strength, as do weight-bearing and postural muscles in the legs.

This book makes a strong case for taking advantage of the best of two disciplines—health care and operational systems engineering (a combination of science and mathematics to describe, analyze, plan, design, and integrate systems with complex interactions among people, processes, materials, equipment, and facilities)-to improve the efficiency and quality of health care delivery, as well as health care outcomes. Those most interested in pursuing this approach include leaders in the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of Veterans Affairs, who are committed to finding ways of improving the quality of care for military personnel, veterans, and their families. Intrigued by the possibilities, DOD decided to sponsor a series of workshops to explore the potential of operational systems engineering principals and tools for military health care, beginning with the diagnosis and care of traumatic brain injury (TBI), one of the most prevalent, difficult and challenging injuries suffered by warriors in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Observations Plus Recipes It has been said that science is the orderly collection of facts about the natural world. Scientists, however, are wary of using the word ‘fact.'‘Fact'has the feeling of absoluteness and universality, whereas scientific observations are neither ab- lute nor universal. For example, ‘children have 20 deciduous [baby] teeth'is an observation about the real world, but scientists would not call it a fact. Some children have fewer deciduous teeth, and some have more. Even those children who have exactly 20 deciduous teeth use the full set during only a part of their childhood. When they are babies and t- dlers, children have less than 20 visible teeth, and as they grow older, children begin to loose their deciduous teeth, which are then replaced by permanent teeth. ‘Children have 20 deciduous [baby] teeth'is not even a complete scientific sta- ment. For one thing, the statement ‘children have 20 deciduous teeth'does not tell us what we mean by ‘teeth.'When we say “teeth,” do we mean only those that can seen be with the unaided eye, or do we also include the hidden, unerupted teeth? An observation such as ‘children have 20 deciduous teeth'is not a fact, and, by itself, it is not acceptable as a scientific statement until its terms are explained: scientifically, ‘children have 20 deciduous teeth'must be accompanied by definitions and qualifiers.

In the years since the 9/11 attacks—and the subsequent lethal anthrax letters—the United States has spent billions of dollars on measures to defend the population against the threat of biological weapons. But as Lynn C. Klotz and Edward J. Sylvester argue forcefully in Breeding Bio Insecurity, all that money and effort hasn't made us any safer—in fact, it has made us more vulnerable. In the 21st century, academic medical centers across the United States continue to make scientific breakthroughs, to make improvements in patient care, and to p- vide the most advanced information and guidance in matters affecting public health. The signs of growth are everywhere—in new research buildings, new pa- nerships with industry, new forms of molecular medicine, and new sensitivity to the role of the human spirit in healing. This growth is due in large part to the dedication and productivity of our faculty, who are providing more patient care, more research, more teaching, and more community service than ever before. Today, there are roughly 135,000 physicians, scientists, and other faculty wo- ing at approximately 125 academic medical centers around the country. Increasingly, they are asked to do more with less. Since the 1990s, academic medical centers in the United States have lost the financial margin they once enjoyed, thereby putting new pressures on research, education, and clinical care. Medical school faculty, previously given funded time for teaching and research, are increasingly drafted to bring in clinical revenues to cover their salaries. Dedicated to the missions of research, teaching, and care, our faculty have responded well to these challenges and perform at a very high level. However, we are beginning to see the results of ongoing stress.
