El síndrome de Sjögren es una enfermedad autoinmune sistémica que afecta principalmente a las mujeres luego de la cuarta década de la vida. Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a multi-system exocrinopathy. Its etiology remains unknown and it has an autoimmune pathogenesis. Although SS has been reported in young children and men, it is more frequent in middle-aged women. SS may occur alone, defined as primary SS, or in association with another autoimmune disease, defined as secondary SS. SS has a wide variety of glandular and extra-glandular manifestations affecting almost every organ. Despite its apparently inoffensive initial manifestations, SS can become a disabling and potentially life-threatening disease. This book discusses Sjögren's syndrome in detail, and provides further insight on topics that include the clinical manifestation and management of SS; the symptoms and diagnosis; health related quality of life in patients with SS; the involvement SS has in the central nervous system; and new aspects of mechanism of salivary glans dysfunctions in SS.

The pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases is multifaceted, and the complexity of symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options associated with these diseases reflects this. Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disorder affecting up to 4 million Americans, and results from autoimmune reactions in secretory glands (primary SS) and other tissues (secondary SS). Current treatment options for SS are aimed largely at amelioration of symptoms, but without functional restoration in the secretory glands. Prescribed medications for salivary hypo-function or xerostomia are often associated with severe side effects, typically due to the effects of systemically administered muscarinic cholinergic receptor agonistis. This book presents research on novel agents for treatment of autoimmune disorders.
