This second e-book dedicated to medical leadership highlights a strong movement, world-wide, to explore, investigate, and improve the role of the medical profession in shaping health reform-- and what needs to be done in order to prepare members of the profession for an enhanced role in that regard. It is a natural assumption that authors who have published numerous scientific papers have also acquired mastery of the written word. Yet sadly this is not always the case. Talk to many journal editors and they will say that a number of the submissions they receive fail because an interesting finding has simply been presented in a poor way. The Cambridge Orthopaedic Writing Prize was created to allow freedom of written expression and to encourage trainees, authors, writers - call them what you will - to have fun, to play with their language and, at the same time, to compete. The end game, of course, is for the quality of scientific submissions to improve; for entrants to realise that you can influence a reviewer's judgment simply by improving the language and presentation of submitted research. There are no prizes for hopeless complexity. How can one expect a reviewer to focus on a paper that is badly written? Not a hope. Reviewers are human, too.For the 2013 prize, the judges were bowled over with the professionalism and content of the submissions. Each one, in their view, was utterly brilliant.

The impact of information technology on the management of healthcare has been enormous in recent years, and it continues to grow in scope and complexity. On 26th and 27th April 2010, the Muhammad bin Hamad Center for Muslim Contribution to Civilization held a conference to launch the English edition of The Key to Medicine and a Guide for Students (Garnet Publishing, Reading, 2010), by Abu al-Faraj'Ali ibn al- Ḥusayn Ibn Hindu. The proceedings contain rich discourses and studies of this eleventh-century introductory book to medicine. As the title indicates, The Key to Medicine and a Guide for Students was written as an introduction to medicine, intended for students. After extolling the virtues of having a profession in general and of medicine in particular, Ibn Hindu (d. 423/1032) discusses various disciplines that a medical student should be familiar with, including a lengthy digression into philosophy and logic. He then deals with matters specifically medical, devoting separate sections to anatomy, diseases, pulse, and names of medicinal substances. During the conference, specialists in medicine, psychiatry, pharmacy, Islamic studies, and academicians, presented valuable research papers, documented with accurate information and evidenced with scientific analysis. The book contains two parts, one in Arabic and one in English. Although not necessarily identical in their content, they each focus on the study of the text and Ibn Hindu himself. The authors of these papers have studied this valuable medieval book from various perspectives, authenticating its treatises, analysing its content and evaluating its relevance to modern medicine.

Biomedical informatics is becoming increasingly important as healthcare organizations worldwide implement biomedical informatics applications as part of their continued effort to improve the effectiveness of patient care and the efficiency of service delivery. This book presents the full papers delivered at the 2013 International Conference on Informatics, Management and Technology in Healthcare (ICIMTH 2013), held in Athens, Greece, in July 2013. The scope of biomedical informatics is very broad, including a number of technologies such as imaging, sensors, biomedical equipment and even organ transplant technology. The main theme of this special issue is a collection of research articles or papers on the evaluations of a wide variety of complex educational and supportive, psychosocial interventions for people with physical or mental health problems/needs such as those with heart failure, schizophrenia, depression, and cancers, as well as for their family caregivers. The papers will also report the findings of and discuss the effective strategies in evaluation of complex health care interventions, which have been conducted by mainly nurse researchers, and/or other health care professionals. Complex interventions, consisting of multiple behavioural, technological, and organizational components, are common and important features of health care practice and research. However, they pose special evaluation problems because their components may act independently or interdependently, and it is often difficult to tease out the relationships between them. This has led to well documented difficulties in evaluating such interventions. Discussion papers and literature or systematic reviews on recent effective strategies in complex health care interventions and major considerations for their implementation and evaluation will also be included. Therefore, the book will provide high level of scientific evidence on the care of diverse client populations and be useful reference materials to wide range of nursing and health care professionals. Most of the articles expected to be the research reports with experimental design or randomized controlled trials for outcome evaluation of innovative psychosocial interventions; and one or two of them will be the case controlled or process-focused evaluation research. Another major section in the special issue will consist of two or three literature or systematic reviews on important complex health care interventions recently used and across cultures.

The International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC) classifies asbestos as a proven human carcinogen. No amount of asbestos exposure is safe for human health. Consequently, the use of all forms of asbestos has been banned in most of the developed countries. Unfortunately, India has failed to impose such a ban. Despite the fact that a ban on mining in India is being placed for more than 20 years, mines in the private sector of India are still in operation and asbestos continues to be used in large quantities. The official reason given by both industry and government is that it is a material for the poor as it is cheap and has many good properties. Generally, people in the slum area often cook their food in the open wood fire under asbestos roofing. This results in cracking of asbestos cement roofs exposing asbestos, making it friable as the height of most rural houses roofed with asbestos cement is too small to have effective air circulation. In addition, on the roofs of Indian slums, where it is sawn and fixed by hand, it's difficult to avoid releasing a large number of dangerous fibers. The inhabitants paint their asbestos roofing with emulsion paint which also deteriorates it, rapidly resulting in discoloration and mould growth. As a result, Asbestos related diseases are more common in the slum area. In this study, an asbestos cement sample was randomly scanned at various magnifications to identify asbestos fibers and determine how asbestos fibers are mixed with construction materials. Laboratory analyses were performed on the asbestos cement sample to establish a relationship between: i) morphology (shape of the crystals), ii) the asbestos cement mineralogical composition using SEM analyses and iii) high magnification structure of the individual fibers (fibrils), as well as iv) energy dispersive x-ray analysis of the fiber chemistry by comparison to a standard. Also, quantification analysis of fiber length and thickness was performed due to the reason that fibrogenicity and carcinogenicity of asbestos fibers are both dependent on several fiber parameters including fiber dimensions. There are several standards specified under the Factories Act and Mines Act including limits of exposure. But standards in India are only on paper. All forms of asbestos pose grave to human health. All are proven human carcinogens. There is no continued justification for the use of asbestos. Ist production and use should be banned worldwide. A global ban on asbestos is needed.

The pages of this book reveal a truly uncommon life obtained from a highly credible and competent source. The author of the recollections, Tamás Kornfeld, i.e. Thomas DeKornfeld, M.D, was born into one of the richest families in Hungary in 1924. The young man clearly had practically unlimited opportunities but chose a medical career in order to help poor people. These plans came to naught after the German occupation of Hungary in March, 1944. Fortunately he and his family were able to leave Hungary under an agreement with the Germans and were taken safely to Portugal. Thomas came to the United States in 1945 and, after some military service, resumed his education culminating eventually in a professorship in anesthesiology. He was most active in the development of education in respiratory care and is the author of some seventy papers and books. In the present volume he not only clearly demonstrates his deep obligation to his adopted country but also gives a sharp and sometimes incisive picture of his childhood, youth and extended family.

Network meta-analyses and mixed treatment comparisons represent the uppermost level in the evidence hierarchy for decision making, in medicine as well as in other scholarly fields. They combine and exploit data from direct (i.e. head-to-head) randomized trials and combine them, when appropriate, with indirect estimates, in order to obtain more precise and robust estimates of effect to determine which management strategy is the safest, most effective or cost-effective. Widespread use of health information technology, such as electronic health records (EHR), has the potential to improve the quality of care patients receive and reduce health care costs. Historically, patient health information has been scattered across paper records kept by many different providers in many different locations. When this occurs, health care professionals may lack ready access to critical information needed to make the most informed decisions on treatment options, potentially putting the patient's health at risk or leading to inappropriate or duplicative tests and procedures that increase health care spending.
