This textbook introduces the widely used numerical technique FEM in various engineering disciplines for the analysis of structures, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and other physical phenomena. The use of difference matrices and high-level MATLAB® commands to implement finite difference algorithms is pedagogically novel. This unique and concise textbook gives the reader easy access and a general ability to use first and second difference matrices to set up and solve linear and nonlinear systems in MATLAB which approximate ordinary and partial differential equations. Prerequisites include a knowledge of basic calculus, linear algebra, and ordinary differential equations. Some knowledge of partial differential equations is a plus though the text may easily serve as a supplement for the student currently working through an introductory PDEs course. Familiarity with MATLAB is not required though a little prior experience with programming would be helpful. It includes the three standard approaches to numerical PDE, FDM, FEM and CM, and the two most common time stepping techniques, FDM and Runge-Kutta. The supporting mathematical theory includes the general convergence theory. This material should be readily accessible to students with basic knowledge of mathematical analysis, Lebesgue measure and the basics of Hilbert spaces and Banach spaces. This book describes the contemporary state of the theory and some numerical aspects of inverse problems in partial differential equations. The topic is of sub­ stantial and growing interest for many scientists and engineers, and accordingly to graduate students in these areas. Mathematically, these problems are relatively new and quite challenging due to the lack of conventional stability and to nonlinearity and nonconvexity. Applications include recovery of inclusions from anomalies of their gravitational fields; reconstruction of the interior of the human body from exterior electrical, ultrasonic, and magnetic measurements, recovery of interior structural parameters of detail of machines and of the underground from similar data (non-destructive evaluation); and locating flying or navigated objects from their acoustic or electromagnetic fields. Currently, there are hundreds of publica­ tions containing new and interesting results. A purpose of the book is to collect and present many of them in a readable and informative form. Rigorous proofs are presented whenever they are relatively short and can be demonstrated by quite general mathematical techniques. Also, we prefer to present results that from our point of view contain fresh and promising ideas. In some cases there is no com­ plete mathematical theory, so we give only available results. We do not assume that a reader possesses an enormous mathematical technique. In fact, a moderate knowledge of partial differential equations, of the Fourier transform, and of basic functional analysis will suffice.

In Douglas Adams'book'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy', hyper-intelligent beings reached a point in their existence where they wanted to understand the purpose of their own existence and the universe. Furthermore, because human beings are too impatient and not ready to wait for such a long pe­ riod, high-performance computing techniques have been developed, leading to much faster answers. Based on these developments in the last two decades, scientific and engineering computing has evolved to a key technology which plays an important role in determining, or at least shaping, future research and development activities in many branches of industry. Development work has been going on all over the world resulting in numerical methods that are now available for simulations that were not foreseeable some years ago. However, these days the availability of supercomputers with Teraflop perfor­ mance supports extensive computations with technical relevance. A new age of engineering has started.

Scaling is a mathematical transformation that enlarges or diminishes objects. The technique is used in a variety of areas, including finance and image processing. This book is organized around the notions of scaling phenomena and scale invariance. The various stochastic models commonly used to describe scaling — self-similarity, long-range dependence and multi-fractals — are introduced. These models are compared and related to one another. Next, fractional integration, a mathematical tool closely related to the notion of scale invariance, is discussed, and stochastic processes with prescribed scaling properties (self-similar processes, locally self-similar processes, fractionally filtered processes, iterated function systems) are defined. A number of applications where the scaling paradigm proved fruitful are detailed: image processing, financial and stock market fluctuations, geophysics, scale relativity, and fractal time-space.

In 8 years after publication of the?rst version of this book, the rapidly progre- ing?eld of inverse problems witnessed changes and new developments. Parts of the book were used at several universities, and many colleagues and students as well as myself observed several misprints and imprecisions. Some of the research problems from the?rst edition have been solved. This edition serves the purposes of re?ecting these changes and making appropiate corrections. I hope that these additions and corrections resulted in not too many new errors and misprints. Chapters 1 and 2 contain only 2–3 pages of new material like in sections 1.5, 2.5.
