This collection of eleven papers covers a broad spectrum of topics in analysis, from the study of certain classes of analytic functions to the solvability of singular problems for differential and integral equations to computational schemes for the partial differential equations and singular integral equations.

This volume contains nine papers presented as 45-minute or one-hour addresses at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berkeley in 1986. In the original proceedings volume of ICM-86, published by the AMS in 1988, these papers appeared in the Russian. They have since been translated and collected in the present volume, to insure their broad dissemination. Among the topics represented here are stochastic processes, logic, number theory, functions of a complex variable, functional analysis, Fourier analysis, numerical analysis, and theoretical computer science.

This book contains the doctoral dissertations of three students from Novosibirsk who participated in the seminar of L. A. Bokut‴. The dissertation of Gerasimov focuses on Cohn's theory of noncommutative matrix localizations. Gerasimov presents a construction of matrix localization that is not directly related to (prime) matrix ideals of Cohn, but rather deals with localizations of arbitrary subsets of matrices over a ring. The work of Valitskas applies ideas and constructions of Gerasimov to embeddings of rings into radical rings (in the sense of Jacobson) to develop a theory essentially parallel to Cohn's theory of embeddings of rings into skew fields. Nesterenko's dissertation solves some important problems of Anan‴in and Bergman about representations of (infinite-dimensional) algebras and categories in (triangular) matrices over commutative rings.

A seventh paper, written exclusively for this volume, attempts to unify certain themes that emerged after major discoveries in 1967 and 1968 in the areas of Lie algebras, strong interaction physics, statistical mechanics, and nonlinear partial differential equations—discoveries that may at first glance appear to be independent, but which are in fact deeply interrelated.

This book presents reviewed and revised papers from the fifth and sixth DIMACS Implementation Challenge workshops. These workshops, held approximately annually, aim at encouraging high-quality work in experimental analysis of data structures and algorithms. The papers published in this volume are the results of year-long coordinated research projects and contain new findings and insights. Three papers address the performance evaluation of implementations for two fundamental data structures, dictionaries and priority queues, as used in the context of real applications. Another four papers consider the still evolving topic of methodologies for experimental algorithmics. Five papers are concerned with implementations of algorithms for nearest neighbor search in high dimensional spaces, an area with applications in information retrieval and data mining on collections of Web documents, DNA sequences, images and various other data types. This book, the second in the series of proceedings of Soviet Regional Conferences, contains papers presented at the Second Siberian Winter School: Algebra and Analysis, held at Tomsk State University in 1989. The papers touch on a variety of topics, including Lie algebras and Lie groups, sheaves, superalgebras, graded Lie algebras, Teichmüller theory, nonstandard functional analysis, hyperbolic geometry, $p$-adic $L$-functions, automorphic forms, and resolution of singularities.

The authors consider the nonlinear equation $-\frac 1m=z+Sm$ with a parameter $z$ in the complex upper half plane $\mathbb H $, where $S$ is a positivity preserving symmetric linear operator acting on bounded functions. The solution with values in $ \mathbb H$ is unique and its $z$-dependence is conveniently described as the Stieltjes transforms of a family of measures $v$ on $\mathbb R$. In a previous paper the authors qualitatively identified the possible singular behaviors of $v$: under suitable conditions on $S$ we showed that in the density of $v$ only algebraic singularities of degree two or three may occur. In this paper the authors give a comprehensive analysis of these singularities with uniform quantitative controls. They also find a universal shape describing the transition regime between the square root and cubic root singularities. Finally, motivated by random matrix applications in the authors'companion paper they present a complete stability analysis of the equation for any $z\in \mathbb H$, including the vicinity of the singularities.

Asymptotic methods constitute an important area of both pure and applied mathematics and have applications to a vast array of problems. This collection of papers is devoted to asymptotic methods applied to mechanical problems, primarily thin structure problems. The first section presents a survey of asymptotic methods and a review of the literature, including the considerable body of Russian works in this area. This part may be used as a reference book or as a textbook for advanced undergraduate or graduate students in mathematics or engineering. The second part presents original papers containing new results. Among the key features of the book are its analysis of the general theory of asymptotic integration with applications to the theory of thin shells and plates, and new results about the local forms of vibrations and buckling of thin shells which have not yet made their way into other monographs on this subject.

The fame of the Polish school at Lvov rests with the diverse and fundamental contributions of Polish mathematicians working there during the interwar years. In particular, despite material hardship and without a notable mathematical tradition, the school made major contributions to what is now called functional analysis. This chronicle of the Lvov school—its legacy and the tumultuous historical events which defined its lifespan—will appeal equally to mathematicians, historians, or general readers seeking a cultural and institutional overview of key aspects of twentieth-century Polish mathematics not described anywhere else in the extant English-language literature.

This book contains papers presented at the Third Siberian School: Algebra and Analysis, held in Irkutsk in the summer of 1989. Drawing 130 participants from all over the former Soviet Union, the school sought to acquaint Siberian and other mathematicians with the latest achievements in a wide variety of mathematical areas and to give young researchers an opportunity to present their work. The papers presented here range over topics in algebra, analysis, geometry, and topology.

This book is another publication in the recent surveys of ordered sets and lattices. The papers, which might be characterized as “reviews of reviews,” are based on articles reviewed in the Referativnyibreve Zhurnal: Matematika from 1978 to 1982. For the sake of completeness, the authors also attempted to integrate information from other relevant articles from that period. The bibliography of each paper provides references to the reviews in RZhMat and Mathematical Reviews where one can seek more detailed information. Specifically excluded from consideration in this volume were such topics as algebras of logic, Boolean functions, vector lattices, ordered algebraic systems (including ordered topological spaces), and semigroup properties of semilattices, as well as papers in which such topics as nonlattice-theoretical properties of congruence lattices and subalgebra lattices were considered.

Two closely related topics, higher order Bohr sets and higher order almost automorphy, are investigated in this paper. Both of them are related to nilsystems. In the first part, the problem which can be viewed as the higher order version of an old question concerning Bohr sets is studied: for any $d\in \mathbb{N}$ does the collection of $\{n\in \mathbb{Z}: S\cap (S-n)\cap\ldots\cap (S-dn)\neq \emptyset\}$ with $S$ syndetic coincide with that of Nil$_d$ Bohr$_0$-sets? In the second part, the notion of $d$-step almost automorphic systems with $d\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$ is introduced and investigated, which is the generalization of the classical almost automorphic ones.

This volume contains the Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations, held June 11–15, 2012, in El Escorial, Madrid, Spain. Included in this volume is the written version of the mini-course given by Jonathan Bennett on Aspects of Multilinear Harmonic Analysis Related to Transversality. Also included, among other papers, is a paper by Emmanouil Milakis, Jill Pipher, and Tatiana Toro, which reflects and extends the ideas presented in the mini-course on Analysis on Non-smooth Domains delivered at the conference by Tatiana Toro. The topics of the contributed lectures cover a wide range of the field of Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations and illustrate the fruitful interplay between the two subfields.

The Ahlfors–Bers Colloquia commemorate the mathematical legacy of Lars Ahlfors and Lipman Bers. The core of this legacy lies in the fields of geometric function theory, Teichmüller theory, hyperbolic geometry, and partial differential equations. However, the work of Ahlfors and Bers has impacted and created interactions with many other fields of mathematics, such as algebraic geometry, dynamical systems, topology, geometric group theory, mathematical physics, and number theory. Recent years have seen a flowering of this legacy with an increased interest in their work. This current volume contains articles on a wide variety of subjects that are central to this legacy. These include papers in Kleinian groups, classical Riemann surface theory, translation surfaces, algebraic geometry and dynamics. The majority of the papers present new research, but there are survey articles as well.

This volume contains state-of-the-art survey papers in complex analysis based on lectures given at the Second Winter School on Complex Analysis and Operator Theory held in February 2008 at the University of Sevilla, Sevilla, Spain. Complex analysis is one of the most classical branches of mathematical analysis and is closely related to many other areas of mathematics, including operator theory, harmonic analysis, probability theory, functional analysis and dynamical systems. Undoubtedly, the interplay among all these branches gives rise to very beautiful and deep results in complex analysis and its neighboring fields. This interdisciplinary aspect of complex analysis is the central topic of this volume. This book collects the latest advances in five significant areas of rapid development in complex analysis. The papers are: Local holomorphic dynamics of diffeomorphisms in dimension one, by F. Bracci, Nonpositive curvature and complex analysis, by S. M. Buckley, Virasoro algebra and dynamics in the space of univalent functions, by I. Markina and A. Vasil'ev, Composition operators $\heartsuit$ Toeplitz operators, by J. H. Shapiro, and Two applications of the Bergman spaces techniques, by S. Shimorin. The papers are aimed, in particular, at graduate students with some experience in basic complex analysis. They might also serve as introductions for general researchers in mathematical analysis who may be interested in the specific areas addressed by the authors. Indeed, the contributions can be considered as up-to-the-minute reports on the current state of the fields, each of them including many recent results which may be difficult to find in the literature.

This volume contains the proceedings of a conference held in Cagliari, Italy, from September 7–10, 2009, to celebrate John C. Wood's 60th birthday. These papers reflect the many facets of the theory of harmonic maps and its links and connections with other topics in Differential and Riemannian Geometry. Two long reports, one on constant mean curvature surfaces by F. Pedit and the other on the construction of harmonic maps by J. C. Wood, open the proceedings. These are followed by a mix of surveys on Prof. Wood's area of expertise: Lagrangian surfaces, biharmonic maps, locally conformally Kähler manifolds and the DDVV conjecture, as well as several research papers on harmonic maps. This volume contains the Proceedings of the 8th International Conference on Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations, held in El Escorial, Madrid, Spain, on June 16–20, 2008. Featured in this book are papers by Steve Hoffmann and Carlos Kenig, which are based on two mini-courses given at the conference. These papers present topics of current interest, which assume minimal background from the reader, and represent state-of-the-art research in a useful way for young researchers. Other papers in this volume cover a range of fields in Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations and, in particular, illustrate well the fruitful interplay between these two fields.

This volume contains the proceedings of the International Workshop on Banach Space Theory, held at the Universidad de Los Andes in Merida, Venezuela in January 1992. These refereed papers contain the newest results in Banach space theory, real or complex function spaces, and nonlinear functional analysis. There are several excellent survey papers, including ones on homogeneous Banach spaces and applications of probability inequalities, in addition to an important research paper on the distortion problem. This volume is notable for the breadth of the mathematics presented.

This volume is a collection of papers reflecting the conference held in Nahariya, Israel in honor of Professor Lawrence Zalcman's sixtieth birthday. The papers, many written by leading authorities, range widely over classical complex analysis of one and several variables, differential equations, and integral geometry. To mention just some of those areas addressed within the theory of functions of one complex variable, there are studies on complex dynamics, elliptic functions, Kleinian groups, quasiconformal mappings, Tauberian theorems, univalent functions, and value distribution theory. This book brings together ten papers presented at the Conference on Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations, held in April 1988 at Florida Atlantic University. The papers illuminate the relationship between harmonic analysis and partial differential equations and present results of some of the foremost experts in these areas. Among the topics covered are: application of fully nonlinear, uniformly elliptic equations to the Monge Ampère equation; estimates for Green functions for the purpose of studying Dirichlet problems for operators in non-divergence form; an extension of classical potential theory to the case of nonsmooth domains; the relation between Riesz potentials and maximal fractional operators due to Muckenhoupt and Wheeden; and the Lax-Phillips scattering theory applied to the double Hilbert transform. Directed at research mathematicians and graduate students, the papers require knowledge of the classical tools of analysis, such as measure theory, Sobolev spaces, and potential theory.

This volume contains contributions by participants in the AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference on Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems, held at the University of Colorado in June 1984. The conference brought together researchers from a wide spectrum of areas in Hamiltonian dynamics. The papers vary from expository descriptions of recent developments to fairly technical presentations with new results. Collectively, they provide an excellent survey of contemporary work in this area. The field of Hamiltonian dynamics has its roots in Newton's application of the science of dynamics to the emerging problems of orbital mechanics and in the development of celestial mechanics. Indeed, many of the talks at the conference emphasized topics directly concerned with such questions as the Newtonian $n$-body problem, the three-body problem, and the artificial earth satellite. Some speakers focused on those dynamical issues—such as integrability, KAM, and extensions of the Poincaré-Birkhoff results—that emerged from celestial mechanics and extend to wider classes of dynamical systems. Other topics covered include periodic orbits with variation methods, twist and annulus maps, stable mainfold theory, almost periodic motion, and heteroclinic and homoclinic orbits. By bringing together papers from such a diverse range of topics, this book may serve to stimulate further development in this area.

This volume contains papers presented at the University of Iowa 1985 Summer Conference in honor of H.-J. Borchers, N. M. Hugenholtz, R. V. Kadison, and D. Kastler and gives a systematic, up-to-date treatment of the fruitful interaction that the last two decades have brought between operator algebras and mathematical physics. Special attention is paid to an overview of the algebraic approach to quantum field theory and in particular, to quantum statistical mechanics. More than half the papers culminate with a presentation of new results which have not appeared previously in journals, and with a few exceptions, these new results are presented with complete proofs. This book is addressed to graduate students and researchers working in a broad spectrum of areas in mathematics and mathematical physics. Functional analysis, operator algebras, operator theory, differential geometry, cyclic cohomology, $K$-theory, and index theory are applied to questions in the quantum theory of fields and statistical mechanics. The individual papers are self-contained, but the reader should have some familiarity with the basic concepts of functional analysis and operator theory, although no physics background is assumed.
