This volume is the seventh in the series “Collected Papers of John Milnor.” Together with the preceding Volume VI, it contains all of Milnor's papers in dynamics, through the year 2012. Most of the papers are in holomorphic dynamics; however, there are two in real dynamics and one on cellular automata. Two of the papers are published here for the first time. The papers in this volume provide important and fundamental material in real and complex dynamical systems. Many have become classics, and have inspired further research in the field. Some of the questions addressed here continue to be important in current research. In some cases, there have been minor corrections or clarifications, as well as references to more recent work which answers questions raised by the author. The volume also includes an index to facilitate searching the book for specific topics.

The Ahlfors–Bers Colloquia commemorate the mathematical legacy of Lars Ahlfors and Lipman Bers. The core of this legacy lies in the fields of geometric function theory, Teichmüller theory, hyperbolic geometry, and partial differential equations. However, the work of Ahlfors and Bers has impacted and created interactions with many other fields of mathematics, such as algebraic geometry, dynamical systems, topology, geometric group theory, mathematical physics, and number theory. Recent years have seen a flowering of this legacy with an increased interest in their work. This current volume contains articles on a wide variety of subjects that are central to this legacy. These include papers in Kleinian groups, classical Riemann surface theory, translation surfaces, algebraic geometry and dynamics. The majority of the papers present new research, but there are survey articles as well.

This volume contains state-of-the-art survey papers in complex analysis based on lectures given at the Second Winter School on Complex Analysis and Operator Theory held in February 2008 at the University of Sevilla, Sevilla, Spain. Complex analysis is one of the most classical branches of mathematical analysis and is closely related to many other areas of mathematics, including operator theory, harmonic analysis, probability theory, functional analysis and dynamical systems. Undoubtedly, the interplay among all these branches gives rise to very beautiful and deep results in complex analysis and its neighboring fields. This interdisciplinary aspect of complex analysis is the central topic of this volume. This book collects the latest advances in five significant areas of rapid development in complex analysis. The papers are: Local holomorphic dynamics of diffeomorphisms in dimension one, by F. Bracci, Nonpositive curvature and complex analysis, by S. M. Buckley, Virasoro algebra and dynamics in the space of univalent functions, by I. Markina and A. Vasil'ev, Composition operators $\heartsuit$ Toeplitz operators, by J. H. Shapiro, and Two applications of the Bergman spaces techniques, by S. Shimorin. The papers are aimed, in particular, at graduate students with some experience in basic complex analysis. They might also serve as introductions for general researchers in mathematical analysis who may be interested in the specific areas addressed by the authors. Indeed, the contributions can be considered as up-to-the-minute reports on the current state of the fields, each of them including many recent results which may be difficult to find in the literature.

This volume is a collection of papers reflecting the conference held in Nahariya, Israel in honor of Professor Lawrence Zalcman's sixtieth birthday. The papers, many written by leading authorities, range widely over classical complex analysis of one and several variables, differential equations, and integral geometry. To mention just some of those areas addressed within the theory of functions of one complex variable, there are studies on complex dynamics, elliptic functions, Kleinian groups, quasiconformal mappings, Tauberian theorems, univalent functions, and value distribution theory. Taken together, the papers in this volume provide a snapshot of activity in complex analysis at the beginning of the twenty-first century and testify to the continuing vitality of the interplay between classical and modern analysis.

With the publication of this volume, the Chinese mathematical community is attempting to renew communication with the rest of the world. This collection of papers on complex analysis is a survey of the work of key researchers in China. It is only the first in a series of mathematical monographs which will keep western mathematicians abreast of research in modern China. It is hoped that this and subsequent volumes will promote scientific exchange between east and west. Requiring as background only an upper-level undergraduate course in complex analysis, these expository papers survey the achievements and contributions of Chinese mathematical researchers distinguished in this field. Some new methods and trends are presented, as well as generalizations of many known results. Of particular note are the papers by Chuang and Yang on the distribution of values of meromorphic functions, Shen on approximation in the complex domain, and Wen on applications to nonlinear systems of partial differential equations.

The papers in this volume cover a wide variety of topics in differential geometry, general relativity, and partial differential equations. In addition, there are several articles dealing with various aspects of Lie groups and mathematics physics. Taken together, the articles provide the reader with a panorama of activity in general relativity and partial differential equations, drawn by a number of leading figures in the field. The companion volume (Contemporary Mathematics, Volume 553) is devoted to function theory and optimization.

This book contains contributions from the participants of an international conference on complex analysis and dynamical systems. The papers collected here are devoted to various topics in complex analysis and dynamical systems, ranging from properties of holomorphic mappings to attractors in hyperbolic spaces. Overall, these selections provide an overview of activity in analysis at the outset of the twenty-first century. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in complex analysis and related problems of dynamics. With this volume, the Israel Mathematical Conference Proceedings are now published as a subseries of the AMS Contemporary Mathematics series.

We study features of the longtime behavior and the spatial continuum limit for the diffusion limit of the following particle model. Consider populations consisting of two types of particles located on sites labeled by a countable group. The populations of each of the types evolve as follows: Each particle performs a random walk and dies or splits in two with probability $\frac{1}{2}$ and the branching rates of a particle of each type at a site $x$ at time $t$ is proportional to the size of the population at $x$ at time $t$ of the other type. The diffusion limit of “small mass, large number of initial particles” is a pair of two coupled countable collections of interacting diffusions, the mutually catalytic super branching random walk. Consider now increasing sequences of finite subsets of sites and define the corresponding finite versions of the process. We study the evolution of these large finite spatial systems in size-dependent time scales and compare them with the behavior of the infinite systems, which amounts to establishing the so-called finite system scheme. A dichotomy is known between transient and recurrent symmetrized migrations for the infinite system, namely, between convergence to equilibria allowing for coexistence in the first case and concentration on monotype configurations in the second case. Correspondingly we show (i) in the recurrent case both large finite and infinite systems behave similar in all time scales, (ii) in the transient case we see for small time scales a behavior resembling the one of the infinite system, whereas for large time scales the system behaves as in the finite case with fixed size and finally in intermediate scales interesting behavior is exhibited, the system diffuses through the equilibria of the infinite system which are indexed by the pair of intensities and this diffusion process can be described as mutually catalytic diffusion on $(\mathbb{R}^+)^2$. At the same time, the above finite system asymptotics can be applied to mean-field systems of $N$ exchangeable mutually catalytic diffusions. This is the building block for a renormalization analysis of the spatially infinite hierarchical model and leads to an association of this system with the so-called interaction chain, which reflects the behavior of the process on large space-time scales. Similarly we introduce the concept of a continuum limit in the hierarchical mean field limit and show that this limit always exists and that the small-scale properties are described by another Markov chain called small scale characteristics. Both chains are analyzed in detail and exhibit the following interesting effects. The small scale properties of the continuum limit exhibit the dichotomy, overlap or segregation of densities of the two populations, as a function of the underlying random walk kernel. A corresponding concept to study hot spots is presented. Next we look in the transient regime for global equilibria and their equilibrium fluctuations and in the recurrent regime on the formation of monotype regions. For particular migration kernels in the recurrent regime we exhibit diffusive clustering, which means that the sizes (suitably defined) of monotype regions have a random order of magnitude as time proceeds and its distribution is explicitly identifiable. On the other hand in the regime of very large clusters we identify the deterministic order of magnitude of monotype regions and determine the law of the random size. These two regimes occur for different migration kernels than for the cases of ordinary branching or Fisher-Wright diffusion. Finally we find a third regime of very rapid deterministic spatial cluster growth which is not present in other models just mentioned. A further consequence of the analysis is that mutually catalytic branching has a fixed point property under renormalization and gives a natural example different from the trivial case of multitype models consisting of two independent versions of the fixed
