This book lays the foundations for an exciting new area of research in descriptive set theory. It develops a robust connection between two active topics: forcing and analytic equivalence relations. This in turn allows the authors to develop a generalization of classical Ramsey theory. Given an analytic equivalence relation on a Polish space, can one find a large subset of the space on which it has a simple form? Galois connections provide the order- or structure-preserving passage between two worlds of our imagination - and thus are inherent in hu­ man thinking wherever logical or mathematical reasoning about cer­ tain hierarchical structures is involved. Order-theoretically, a Galois connection is given simply by two opposite order-inverting (or order­ preserving) maps whose composition yields two closure operations (or one closure and one kernel operation in the order-preserving case). Thus, the'hierarchies'in the two opposite worlds are reversed or transported when passing to the other world, and going forth and back becomes a stationary process when iterated. The advantage of such an'adjoint situation'is that information about objects and relationships in one of the two worlds may be used to gain new information about the other world, and vice versa. In classical Galois theory, for instance, properties of permutation groups are used to study field extensions. Or, in algebraic geometry, a good knowledge of polynomial rings gives insight into the structure of curves, surfaces and other algebraic vari­ eties, and conversely. Moreover, restriction to the'Galois-closed'or'Galois-open'objects (the fixed points of the composite maps) leads to a precise'duality between two maximal subworlds'.

The main requirement for these articles has been that they should give a reasonably complete up-to-date account of the current state of affairs in these areas and that they should be maximally accessible. Was ist Geometrie? Eine junge Dame, so gefragt, antwortet ohne Zögern:'Oh, das ist das, wo etwas bewiesen wird.'Gedrängt, ein Beispiel flir so ein zu beweisendes Etwas zu geben, mußte sie passen. Auch war ihr entgangen, warum es eine gute Sache war, etwas zu beweisen. Die Reaktion der Dame ist typisch für viele Menschen, die meinen, auf der Schule Geometrie gelernt zu haben. Sie vergessen alle die Hauptsache und ver­ gegenwärtigen sich nicht, warum dieser Stoff durchgenommen worden ist. Das Vergessen der Sätze ist keine Tragödie. Wir vergessen vieles von dem, was wir während unserer Schulzeit lernten - oder sollte ich sagen, was uns dort begegnete? Nichtsdesto­ weniger ist es bedauerlich, wenn ein ganzer Unterricht so langweilig ist, daß es nicht gelingt, irgendetwas daraus in dem Gedächtnis der Schüler einzuprägen. Zugegeben, die traditionelle Geometrie war selbst an diesem Mangel schuld (und ist es noch). Und warum wurde sie gelehrt? Weil man meinte, dem jungen Menschen ein einheitliches logisches System auf einem ihm gemäßen Niveau bieten zu müssen. Vermutlich erreichten einige Schüler das gewünschte Ziel, aber viele andere wurden so durch die Einzelheiten abge­ lenkt, daß sie den Blick für die Hauptsache verloren.

This is the second supplementary volume to Kluwer's highly acclaimed eleven-volume Encyclopaedia of Mathematics. This additional volume contains nearly 500 new entries written by experts and covers developments and topics not included in the previous volumes. These entries are arranged alphabetically throughout and a detailed index is included. This supplementary volume enhances the existing eleven volumes, and together these twelve volumes represent the most authoritative, comprehensive and up-to-date Encyclopaedia of Mathematics available.

Combinatorics and graph theory have mushroomed in recent years. Many overlapping or equivalent results have been produced. Some of these are special cases of unformulated or unrecognized general theorems. The body of knowledge has now reached a stage where approaches toward unification are overdue. To paraphrase Professor Gian-Carlo Rota (Toronto, 1967),'Combinatorics needs fewer theorems and more theory.'In this book we are doing two things at the same time: A. We are presenting a unified treatment of much of combinatorics and graph theory. We have constructed a concise algebraically­ based, but otherwise self-contained theory, which at one time embraces the basic theorems that one normally wishes to prove while giving a common terminology and framework for the develop­ ment of further more specialized results. B. We are writing a textbook whereby a student of mathematics or a mathematician with another specialty can learn combinatorics and graph theory. We want this learning to be done in a much more unified way than has generally been possible from the existing literature. Our most difficult problem in the course of writing this book has been to keep A and B in balance. On the one hand, this book would be useless as a textbook if certain intuitively appealing, classical combinatorial results were either overlooked or were treated only at a level of abstraction rendering them beyond all recognition.

Band III der Hausdorff-Edition enthält Hausdorffs Band „Mengenlehre', seine veröffentlichten Arbeiten zur deskriptiven Mengenlehre und Topologie sowie zahlreiche einschlägige Studien aus dem Nachlaß. Sein Buch „Mengenlehre'erlangte besonders dadurch historische Bedeutung, als darin erstmals eine monographische Darstellung des damals aktuellen Standes der deskriptiven Mengenlehre gegeben wurde. Es ist hier von Spezialisten dieses Gebietes sorgfältig kommentiert worden. Auch die veröffentlichten Arbeiten sind mit ausführlichen Kommentaren versehen. Besonders umfassend ist in diesem Band der Edition der Nachlaß Hausdorffs berücksichtigt. Hingewiesen sei insbesondere auf seinen zahlreichen originellen Studien zu Themen der deskriptiven Mengenlehre und auf seine damals sehr originelle Vorlesung über algebraische Topologie vom Sommersemester 1933.

Orders: Description and Roles

Surveys in General Topology presents topics relating to general topology ranging from closed mappings and ultrafilters to covering and separation properties of box products. Ordered topological spaces and the use of combinatorial techniques in functional analysis are also considered, along with product spaces and weakly compact subsets of Banach spaces. Applications of stationary sets in topology are presented as well. SET THEORY

This book is a systematic treatment of barrelled spaces, and of structures in which barrelledness conditions are significant. It is a fairly self-contained study of the structural theory of those spaces, concentrating on the basic phenomena in the theory, and presenting a variety of functional-analytic techniques.Beginning with some basic and important results in different branches of Analysis, the volume deals with Baire spaces, presents a variety of techniques, and gives the necessary definitions, exploring conditions on discs to ensure that they are absorbed by the barrels of the space. The abstract theory of barrelled spaces is then presented, as well as local completeness and its applications to the inheritance of the Mackey topology to subspaces. Further discussed is the abstract study of bornological and ultrabornological spaces; B- and Br-completeness; inductive limits; strong barrelledness conditions; characterizations of barrelled, bornological and (DF)-spaces in the context of spaces of type C(X); the stability of barrelledness conditions of topological tensor products and the related questions of commutability of inductive limits and tensor products; and the holomorphically significant properties of locally convex spaces as developed by Nachbin and others.
