This volume results from two programs that took place at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore: Aspects of Computation — in Celebration of the Research Work of Professor Rod Downey (21 August to 15 September 2017) and Automata Theory and Applications: Games, Learning and Structures (20-24 September 2021).The first program was dedicated to the research work of Rodney G. Downey, in celebration of his 60th birthday. The second program covered automata theory whereby researchers investigate the other end of computation, namely the computation with finite automata, and the intermediate level of languages in the Chomsky hierarchy (like context-free and context-sensitive languages).This volume contains 17 contributions reflecting the current state-of-art in the fields of the two programs.

The book is intended as an invitation to the topic of relations on a rather general basis. It fills the gap between the basic knowledge offered in countless introductory papers and books (usually comprising orders and equivalences) and the highly specialized monographs on mainly relation algebras, many-valued (fuzzy) relations, or graphs. This is done not only by presenting theoretical results but also by giving hints to some of the many interesting application areas (also including their respective theoretical basics).This book is a new — and the first of its kind — compilation of known results on binary relations. It offers relational concepts in both reasonable depth and broadness, and also provides insight into the vast diversity of theoretical results as well as application possibilities beyond the commonly known examples.This book is unique by the spectrum of the topics it handles. Problem solving is an essential part of every scientific discipline. It has two components: (1) problem identification and formulation, and (2) the solution to the formulated problem. One can solve a problem on its own using ad hoc techniques or by following techniques that have produced efficient solutions to similar problems. This requires the understanding of various algorithm design techniques, how and when to use them to formulate solutions, and the context appropriate for each of them.Algorithms: Design Techniques and Analysis advocates the study of algorithm design by presenting the most useful techniques and illustrating them with numerous examples — emphasizing on design techniques in problem solving rather than algorithms topics like searching and sorting. Algorithmic analysis in connection with example algorithms are explored in detail. Each technique or strategy is covered in its own chapter through numerous examples of problems and their algorithms.Readers will be equipped with problem solving tools needed in advanced courses or research in science and engineering.

This book introduces oriented version of metrics and cuts and their multidimensional analogues, as well as partial metrics and weighted metrics. It is a follow-up of Geometry of Cuts and Metrics by Deza and Laurent which presents rich theory of classical binary and symmetric objects — metrics and cuts.Many research publications on this subject are devoted to different special aspects of the theory of generalized metrics. However, they are disconnected one from other, often written in different mathematical language, consider the same objects from different points of view without analysis of possible connections, etc. In this book we will construct full theory of main classes of finite generalized metrics and their polyhedral aspects.

In the past 50 years, discrete mathematics has developed as a far-reaching and popular language for modeling fundamental problems in computer science, biology, sociology, operations research, economics, engineering, etc. The same model may appear in different guises, or a variety of models may have enough similarities such that same ideas and techniques can be applied in diverse applications.This book focuses on fields such as consensus and voting theory, clustering, location theory, mathematical biology, and optimization that have seen an upsurge of new and exciting works over the past two decades using discrete models in modern applications. Featuring survey articles written by experts in these fields, the articles emphasize the interconnectedness of the mathematical models and techniques used in various areas, and elucidate the possibilities for future interdisciplinary research. Additionally, this book discusses recent advances in the fields, highlighting the approach of cross-fertilization of ideas across disciplines.

The Pacific Symposium on Biocomputing (PSB) 2010 is an international, multidisciplinary conference for the presentation and discussion of current research in the theory and application of computational methods in problems of biological significance. Presentations are rigorously peer reviewed and are published in an archival proceedings volume. PSB 2010 will be held on January 4 - 8, 2010 in Kohala Coast, Hawaii. Tutorials and workshops will be offered prior to the start of the conference.PSB 2010 will bring together top researchers from the US, Asia Pacific, and around the world to exchange research results and address pertinent issues in all aspects of computational biology. It is a forum for the presentation of work in databases, algorithms, interfaces, visualization, modeling, and other computational methods, as applied to biological problems, with emphasis on applications in data-rich areas of molecular biology.The PSB has been designed to be responsive to the need for critical mass in sub-disciplines within biocomputing. For that reason, it is the only meeting whose sessions are defined dynamically each year in response to specific proposals. PSB sessions are organized by leaders of research in biocomputing's “hot topics”. In this way, the meeting provides an early forum for serious examination of emerging methods and approaches in this rapidly changing field.

Industrial mathematics is evolving into an important branch of mathematics. Mathematicians, in particular in Italy, are becoming increasingly aware of this new trend and are engaged in bridging the gap between highly specialized mathematical research and the emerging demand for innovation from industry. This invaluable book contains 19 papers selected from those submitted to a conference held in Hong Kong in July 2000 to celebrate the 70th birthday of Professor Steve Smale. It may be regarded as a continuation of the proceedings of SMALEFEST 1990 (”From Topology to Computation”) held in Berkeley, USA, 10 years before, but with the focus on the area in which Smale worked more intensively during the'90's, namely the foundations of computational mathematics.

As the theory of computation is a subject based on mathematics, a thorough introduction to a number of relevant mathematical topics, including mathematical logic, set theory, graph theory, modern abstract algebra, and particularly number theory, is given in the first chapter of the book. The book can be used either as a textbook for an undergraduate course, for a first-year graduate course, or as a basic reference in the field.
