This monograph offers a self-contained introduction to the regularity theory for integro-differential elliptic equations, mostly developed in the 21st century. This class of equations finds relevance in fields such as analysis, probability theory, mathematical physics, and in several contexts in the applied sciences. The work gives a detailed presentation of all the necessary techniques, with a primary focus on the main ideas rather than on proving all the results in their greatest generality. The basic building blocks are presented first, with the study of the square root of the Laplacian, and weak solutions to linear equations. Subsequently, the theory of viscosity solutions to nonlinear equations is developed, and proofs are provided for the main known results in this context. The analysis finishes with the investigation of obstacle problems for integro-differential operators and establishes the regularity of solutions and free boundaries. The content of the book collects some contributions related to the talks presented during the INdAM Workshop'Fractional Differential Equations: Modelling, Discretization, and Numerical Solvers', held in Rome, Italy, on July 12–14, 2021. All contributions are original and not published elsewhere. The main topic of the book is fractional calculus, a topic that addresses the study and application of integrals and derivatives of noninteger order. These operators, unlike the classic operators of integer order, are nonlocal operators and are better suited to describe phenomena with memory (with respect to time and/or space). Although the basic ideas of fractional calculus go back over three centuries, only in recent decades there has been a rapid increase in interest in this field of research due not only to the increasing use of fractional calculus in applications in biology, physics, engineering, probability, etc., but also thanks to the availability of new and more powerful numerical tools that allow for an efficient solution of problems that until a few years ago appeared unsolvable. The analytical solution of fractional differential equations (FDEs) appears even more difficult than in the integer case. Hence, numerical analysis plays a decisive role since practically every type of application of fractional calculus requires adequate numerical tools. The aim of this book is therefore to collect and spread ideas mainly coming from the two communities of numerical analysts operating in this field - the one working on methods for the solution of differential problems and the one working on the numerical linear algebra side - to share knowledge and create synergies. This book highlights the applications of stochastic differential equations in white noise probability space to chemical reactions that occur in biology. Maybe for the first time in the existing literature, we investigate here the almost periodic type solutions to the abstract Volterra difference equations depending on several variables. We also investigate the generalized almost periodic type sequences and their applications in a rather detailed manner as well as many new important spaces of (metrically) generalized almost periodic type spaces of sequences and functions. We essenitally apply some results from the theory of C-regularized solution operator families to the abstract Volterra integro-differential-difference equations, contributing also to the theory of fractional calculus and fractional differential equations. The theory of abstract Volterra integro-differential equations and the theory of abstract Volterra difference equations are very attractive fields of research of many authors. The almost periodic features and the asymptotically almost periodic features of solutions to the abstract Volterra differential-difference equations in Banach spaces have been sought in many research articles published by now. The main aim of this monograph is to continue the work collected in my monographs published with W. de Gruyter recently by providing several new results about the existence and uniqueness of almost periodic type solutions to the abstract Volterra integro-differential-difference equations which could be solvable or unsolvable with respect to the highest derivative (order). We would like to particularly emphasize that this is probably the first research monograph devoted to the study of almost periodic type solutions to the abstract Volterra difference equations depending on several variables. We also consider here many new important spaces of (metrically) generalized almost periodic type spaces of sequences and functions, and their almost automorphic analogues. It is also worth noting that this is probably the first research monograph which concerns the generalized almost periodic type sequences and their applications in a rather detailed manner; for the first time in the existing literature, we also present here some applications of results from the theory of $C$-regularized solution operator families to the abstract Volterra difference equations. Fractional calculus and discrete fractional calculus are rapidly growing fields of theoretical and applied mathematics, which are incredibly important in modeling of various real phenomena appearing in different fields like aerodynamics, rheology, interval-valued systems, chaotic systems with short memory and image encryption and discrete-time recurrent neural networks. Many important research results regarding the abstract fractional differential equations and the abstract fractional difference equations in Banach spaces have recently been obtained by a great number of authors from the whole world. In this monograph, we also contribute to the theories of (discrete) fractional calculus, fractional differential-difference equations and multi-dimensional Laplace transform. Although the monograph is far from being complete, we have decided to quote almost eight hundred and fifty research articles which could be of some importance to the interested readers for further developments of the theory established here.

This book is focused on modeling with linear differential equations with constant coefficients. The author starts with the elementary natural growth equation and ends with the heat equation on the real line. The emphasis is on linear algebra, Fourier theory, and specifically data analysis, which is given a very prominent role and is often the book's main driving force. All aspects of modeling with linear differential equations are illustrated by analyzing real and simulated data in MATLAB®. These modeling case studies are of particular interest to students who anticipate having to use differential equations in their fields. Fixed point theory is a powerful tool in nonlinear analysis, with applications in fractional differential equations and other areas. The most prominent application/conclusion of this theory is the Banach contraction principal. The notion of invisible graphs, introduced here for the first time, will find applications in different areas of science.The book examines the classical techniques of this theory with a critical approach, along with the emergence of various generalizations in its evolution. Using the latest theories of the philosophy of science, the author aims to provide a philosophical explanation for the gaps in the fixed point theory and introduce the reader to profound mathematical-philosophical challenges.

Several important problems arising in Physics, Differential Geometry and other topics lead to consider semilinear variational equations of strongly indefinite type and a great deal of work has been devoted to their study. From the mathematical point of view, the main interest relies on the fact that the tools of Nonlinear Functional Analysis, based on compactness arguments and non-degenerate structure, in general cannot be used, at least in a straightforward way, and some new techniques have to be developed. This book discusses some new abstract methods together with their applications to several localization problems, whose common feature is to involve semilinear partial differential equations with a strongly indefinite structure. This book deals with a variety of partial differential equations, including nonlinear Dirac equation from quantum physics (which is of first order), coupled system of multi-component incongruent diffusion and spinorial Yamabe type equations on spin manifolds. The unified framework in this book covers not only the existence of solutions to these PDEs problems, but also asymptotic behaviors of these solutions. In particular, the results for the nonlinear Dirac equations show several concentration behaviors of semiclassical standing waves under the effect of external potentials and the results for the spinorial Yamabe type equations show the existence of conformal embeddings of the 2-sphere into Euclidean 3-space with prescribed mean curvature. This book explores the fundamental concepts of derivatives and integrals in calculus, extending their classical definitions to more advanced forms such as fractional derivatives and integrals. The derivative, which measures a function's rate of change, is paired with its counterpart, the integral, used for calculating areas and volumes. Together, they form the backbone of differential and integral equations, widely applied in science, technology, and engineering. However, discrepancies between mathematical models and experimental data led to the development of extended integral forms, such as the Riemann–Stieltjes integral and fractional integrals, which integrate functions with respect to another function or involve convolutions with kernels. These extensions also gave rise to new types of derivatives, leading to fractional derivatives and integrals with respect to another function. While there has been limited theoretical exploration in recent years, this book aims to bridge that gap. It provides a comprehensive theoretical framework covering inequalities, nonlinear ordinary differential equations, numerical approximations, and their applications. Additionally, the book delves into the existence and uniqueness of solutions for nonlinear ordinary differential equations involving these advanced derivatives, as well as the development of numerical techniques for solving them.

This open access book focuses on the Ginibre ensembles that are non-Hermitian random matrices proposed by Ginibre in 1965. Since that time, they have enjoyed prominence within random matrix theory, featuring, for example, the first book on the subject written by Mehta in 1967. Their status has been consolidated and extended over the following years, as more applications have come to light, and the theory has developed to greater depths. This book sets about detailing much of this progress. Themes covered include eigenvalue PDFs and correlation functions, fluctuation formulas, sum rules and asymptotic behaviors, normal matrix models, and applications to quantum many-body problems and quantum chaos. There is a distinction between the Ginibre ensemble with complex entries (GinUE) and those with real or quaternion entries (GinOE and GinSE, respectively). First, the eigenvalues of GinUE form a determinantal point process, while those of GinOE and GinSE have the more complicated structure of a Pfaffian point process. Eigenvalues on the real line in the case of GinOE also provide another distinction. On the other hand, the increased complexity provides new opportunities for research. This is demonstrated in our presentation, which details several applications and contains not previously published theoretical advances. The areas of application are diverse, with examples being diffusion processes and persistence in statistical physics and equilibria counting for a system of random nonlinear differential equations in the study of the stability of complex systems.

This book explores Lieb's Simplified approach to the ground state of systems of interacting bosons. While extensive research has delved into the behavior of interacting bosons, persistent challenges, such as proving Bose-Einstein condensation, remain. Introduced by Lieb in 1963, the Simplified approach has been the object of renewed attention in recent years, revealing surprising and promising results. Notably, this approach provides ground state energy predictions that agree with many-body systems asymptotically at both low and high densities. It further predicts a condensate fraction and correlation function that agree with Bogolyubov theory at low densities, and numerical predictions match quantum Monte Carlo simulations across all densities. This suggests that Lieb's Simplified approach could serve as a potent tool for reimagining the study of interacting bosons. This book discusses the generalized Duffing equation and its periodic perturbations, with special emphasis on the existence and multiplicity of periodic solutions, subharmonic solutions and different approaches to prove rigorously the presence of chaotic dynamics. Topics in the book are presented at an expository level without entering too much into technical detail. It targets to researchers in the field of chaotic dynamics as well as graduate students with a basic knowledge of topology, analysis, ordinary differential equations and dynamical systems. The book starts with a study of the autonomous equation which represents a simple model of dynamics of a mechanical system with one degree of freedom. This special case has been discussed in the book by using an associated energy function. In the case of a centre, a precise formula is given for the period of the orbit by studying the associated period map. The book also deals with the problem of existence of periodic solutions for the periodically perturbed equation. An important operator, the Poincaré map, is introduced and studied with respect to the existence and multiplicity of its fixed points and periodic points. As a map of the plane into itself, complicated structure and patterns can arise giving numeric evidence of the presence of the so-called chaotic dynamics. Therefore, some novel topological tools are introduced to detect and rigorously prove the existence of periodic solutions as well as analytically prove the existence of chaotic dynamics according to some classical definitions introduced in the last decades. Finally, the rest of the book is devoted to some recent applications in different mathematical models. It carefully describes the technique of “stretching along the paths”, which is a very efficient tool to prove rigorously the presence of chaotic dynamics.

This book is intended to review some recent developments in quantum field theories and integrable models. The ODE/IM correspondence, which is a nontrivial relation between the spectral analysis of ordinary differential equations and the functional relation approach to two-dimensional quantum integrable models, is the main subject. This correspondence was first discovered by Dorey and Tateo (and Bazhanov, Lukyanov, and Zamolodchikov) in 1998, where the relation between the Schrodinger equation with a monomial potential and the functional equation called the Y-system was found. This correspondence is an example of the mysterious link between classical and quantum integrable systems, which produces many interesting applications in mathematical physics, including exact WKB analysis, the quantum Seiberg–Witten curve, and the AdS–CFT correspondence. In this book, the authors explain some basic notions of the ODE/IM correspondence, where the ODE can be formulated as a linear problem associated with affine Toda field equations. The authors then apply the approach of the ODE/IM correspondence to the exact WKB periods in quantum mechanics with a polynomial potential. Deformation of the potential leads to wall-crossing phenomena in the TBA equations. The exact WKB periods can also be regarded as the quantum periods of the four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in the Nekrasov–Shatashvili limit of the Omega background. The authors also explain the massive version of the ODE/IM correspondence based on the affine Toda field equations, which also has an application to the minimal surface, and the gluon scattering amplitudes in the AdS/CFT correspondence.

The main challenge in the study of nonautonomous phenomena is to understand the very complicated dynamical behaviour both as a scientific and mathematical problem. The theory of nonautonomous dynamical systems has experienced a renewed and steadily growing interest in the last twenty years, stimulated also by synergetic effects of disciplines which have developed relatively independent for some time such as topological skew product, random dynamical systems, finite-time dynamics and control systems. The book provides new insights in many aspects of the qualitative theory of nonautonomous dynamical systems including the spectral theory, the linearization theory, the bifurcation theory. The book first introduces several important spectral theorem for nonautonomous differential equations including the Lyapunov spectrum, Sacker-Sell spectrum and finite-time spectrum. The author also establishes the smooth linearization and partial linearization for nonautonomous differential equations in application part. Then the second part recalls the multiplicative ergodic theorem for random dynamical systems and discusses several explicit formulas in computing the Lyapunov spectrum for random dynamical systems generated by linear stochastic differential equations and random difference equations with random delay. In the end, the Pitchfork bifurcation and Hopf bifurcation with additive noise are investigated in terms of change of the sign of Lyapunov exponents and loss of topological equivalence. The roots of the modern theories of differential and $q$-difference equations go back in part to an article by George D. Birkhoff, published in 1913, dealing with the three “sister theories” of differential, difference and $q$-difference equations. This book is about $q$-difference equations and focuses on techniques inspired by differential equations, in line with Birkhoff's work, as revived over the last three decades. It follows the approach of the Ramis school, mixing algebraic and analytic methods. While it uses some $q$-calculus and is illustrated by $q$-special functions, these are not its main subjects. After a gentle historical introduction with emphasis on mathematics and a thorough study of basic problems such as elementary $q$-functions, elementary $q$-calculus, and low order equations, a detailed algebraic and analytic study of scalar equations is followed by the usual process of transforming them into systems and back again. The structural algebraic and analytic properties of systems are then described using $q$-difference modules (Newton polygon, filtration by the slopes). The final chapters deal with Fuchsian and irregular equations and systems, including their resolution, classification, Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, and Galois theory. Nine appendices complete the book and aim to help the reader by providing some fundamental yet not universally taught facts. There are 535 exercises of various styles and levels of difficulty. The main prerequisites are general algebra and analysis as taught in the first three years of university. The book will be of interest to expert and non-expert researchers as well as graduate students in mathematics and physics.

A fundamental question in the theory of discrete and continuous-time population models concerns the conditions for the extinction or persistence of populations – a question that is addressed mathematically by persistence theory. For some time, it has been recognized that if the dynamics of a structured population are mathematically captured by continuous or discrete semiflows and if these semiflows have first-order approximations, the spectral radii of certain bounded linear positive operators (better known as basic reproduction numbers) act as thresholds between population extinction and persistence. This book combines the theory of discrete-time dynamical systems with applications to population dynamics with an emphasis on spatial structure. The inclusion of two sexes that must mate to produce offspring leads to the study of operators that are (positively) homogeneous (of degree one) and order-preserving rather than linear and positive. While this book offers an introduction to ordered normed vector spaces, some background in real and functional analysis (including some measure theory for a few chapters) will be helpful. The appendix and selected exercises provide a primer about basic concepts and about relevant topics one may not find in every analysis textbook.
