This handbook brings together 42 contributions by leading narratologists devoted to the study of narrative devices in European literatures from antiquity to the present. Each entry examines the use of a specific narrative device in one or two national literatures across the ages, whether in successive or distant periods of time. Through the analysis of representative texts in a range of European languages, the authors compellingly trace the continuities and evolution of storytelling devices, as well as their culture-specific manifestations. In response to Monika Fludernik's 2003 call for a'diachronization of narratology,'this new handbook complements existing synchronic approaches that tend to be ahistorical in their outlook, and departs from postclassical narratologies that often prioritize thematic and ideological concerns. ‘Philosophical Meta-Reflections on Literary Studies: Why Do Things with Texts, and What to Do with Them?'takes up key meta-questions in the humanities, with focus on contemporary literary studies, philosophically examines the nature of knowledge therein as well as the implications of certain popular critical approaches, and addresses the effervescent question of ‘relevance'. Jasmin Humburg provides evidence of naturalist narrative strategies, tropes, and character variations in six contemporary American television series: The Wire, Tremé, Shameless, Ozark, Orange is the New Black and 2 Broke Girls. The author investigates how poverty is negotiated through classic literary naturalism and contemporary televisual articulations, and how the latter may have been influenced by the former in the age of the Great Recession. By connecting literary studies, television studies, and concepts of social mobility, this project contributes to the field of new poverty studies.

Bislang sieht die Wissenschaftsforschung in der Literaturwissenschaft keinen besonders zu beachtenden Gegenstand; das bevorzugte Untersuchungsfeld sind die Naturwissenschaften. Um solche Konstellationen zu verändern, sind Initiativen aus den vernachlässigten Disziplinen notwendig. Dieser Band dokumentiert die Beiträge und Diskussionen eines interdisziplinären und internationales Symposions. Ausgehend von Problemen der germanistischen Literaturwissenschaft erkunden die Autoren/innen die Möglichkeiten einer disziplinspezifischen Wissenschaftsforschung, erarbeiten entsprechende Modelle und Kategorien, erproben die Verfahrensweisen in abgrenzbaren Fallstudien und berücksichtigen normative Aspekte, die sich aus der Wissenschaftsforschung für die Wissenschaftsentwicklung ergeben.

Es geht um die Rückkehr zu einer beschreibenden analytischen Verfahrensweise, die den literarischen Gegenstand, statt ihn als das Werk eines Autorwillens zu interpretieren und nach dessen verborgenen Intentionen, Wünschen und Kritiken zu fahnden, als das Archiv verschiedener kontingenter Aussagen auffasst. Das Programm der Foucaultschen Verfahrensweise besteht daher nicht mehr in einer Interpretation, die nur erfindet, sondern in einer Amplifizierung ihrer Archivalien, die in Erscheinung treten lässt, was sie nur verschweigen können.
