Der 90. Geburtstag im Jahr 2019 hat Michael Ende (1929-1995) erneut in die Öffentlichkeit gerückt und auch die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit seinem literarischen Schaffen beflügelt. In dessen Zentrum steht die Unendliche Geschichte (1979) mit ihrer Idee einer Rettung des mythologischen Menschheitserbes. Aufmerksamkeit erlangen auch Endes Erzählbände allein für Erwachsene mit ihrer Nähe zu Franz Kafka und Jorge Luis Borges. Beachtung findet ebenfalls das musikdramatische Schaffen und Endes Werkgemeinschaft mit dem Komponisten Wilfried Hiller. Dass Ende zu den weltweit rezipierten deutschen Schriftstellern gehört, belegen elf Länderartikel, die einen Bogen von Japan über die arabische Welt und Europa bis nach Brasilien schlagen.

The Philosophical Transactions and the letters preserved in the Royal Society's archives provide precious insights into the making of science and the workings of the Republic of Letters in the early and late modern periods. This book investigates the Royal Society's relations with Italy through a socio-historical and critical linguistic analysis of the papers concerning Italian research published in the Transactions and of the epistolary exchanges between the Society's Fellows and Italian scholars. The aim, from the linguistic perspective, is to describe the features and development of papers based on Italian research published in the journal, as well as the discursive aspects that characterise the exchanges between the two countries. Ultimately, from the historical and cultural point of view, the study will provide a picture of the development of Anglo-Italian relations in scientific context from the seventeenth to the end of the nineteenth century.

The volume consists of fifteen papers discussing a vast array of issues and aspects relating to the concept of cultural memory. Taking as a standpoint the Halbwachs/Assman critical tradition, the individual contributions trace the relevance of the concept in the context of a wide range of areas, from medieval studies, through Victorian culture, up to multifold examples from the contemporary literary scene, especially speculative fiction. The collection of papers is designed as an informative and exhaustive overview tracing the relevance of the notion of cultural memory as a reference point in the discussion of cultural continuity and transformations in the diachronic context of the evolution of European culture.

As digital humanities in recent years have been taking roots in major international research centers, this edited volume consisting of ten papers including the introduction seeks to examine the current state of the digital/data-driven research in history and neighboring disciplines dealing with Southeast Europe as well as with the Ottoman Empire and to give an interdisciplinary impetus by bringing together international scholars working with various digital approaches. The included papers give a broad introduction into the field and follow various methods of digital analysis and visualization incorporating approaches like corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis,GIS (Geographic Information Systems), agent-based modelling, computationalstatistics etc.

This volume is a collection of papers presented at the 60th International Academic Week organized by the Southeast Europe Association in October 2022. The event brought together scholars to discuss the various facets of international return migration from diverse destination countries back to Southeast Europe. Within this volume, the concept of return takes on a dynamic and multifaceted character. It is seen not as a one-way journey but as an ongoing, non-linear, and reversible process consisting of multiple stages. This approach recognizes that migration is a journey with many dimensions, involving mobility in various directions. The volume sheds light on a variety of migration practices to and from Southeast Europe, revealing a complex interplay of movements over time.

In our world, where information and communication technologies are reshaping and continuing to shape every field, it is clear that enterprises that can follow the flow of information, grind the information they collect in information mills, and provide intelligence by using their internal and external information, can adapt to changing conditions in a timely and effective manner in proportion to its power. At this point, the aim is to automate the realization of this whole process to the greatest possible extent. In this context, the important developments in the last 20 years have been focusing on business intelligence, big data, deep learning, reinforcement learning, data intelligence, decision intelligence, automated decision-making, and other concepts and the development of application tools. From this point of view, under the title of “Data-driven decisions in enterprises – implications for business education and cases,” papers collected from various universities worldwide are included in this conference proceedings.

The Festschrift volume consists of 42 contributions by 55 authors from 13 countries. The papers, written in Catalan, English, French, Russian and Spanish, treat data from these and some other languages (Arabic, BCS [Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian], Czech, Finnish, Hebrew, Korean, Upper Kuskokwim Athabaskan [Alaska], Shughni [Pamir]). What is identity and how do we construct identity? Why do we have to deconstruct identities again? And what is the role that language policy measures and anti-discriminatory actions play in this process? This volume deals with the topic of identity formation in the Slavic region. It opens with an extensive general introduction to the topic of identity. In its core part, measures meant to enable politically correct speech and anti-discriminatory language are presented for different Slavic languages and cultural spheres. Political correctness, antidiscrimination, and antisexism play an important role in the Slavic region when it comes to influencing language and the use of language. Three additional papers concern Ukrainian-Russian mixed speech and textology of literary works in Russian.

This book focuses on the question of relationality. Despite the numerous motifs introduced to the discourse pertaining to Margaret S. Archer's concept, we notice that some often reappear. What frequently appears is the concept of agency, closely related to the matter of the subject's reflexivity. We also include papers that refer to methodological dilemmas. However, all collected texts directly consider the essence of the concept of the human person and society in reaction to the ontology of the person proposed by Archer. The common thread and horizon of these elaborations is Archer's concept and Pierpaolo Donati's relational sociology. Thus, this publication seeks to gain broader public and open new research perspectives in sociology.

The contributions in this book focus on U.S. migration policies, receiving society, ethnic communities and return migration. The authors analyze various aspects of migratory history ranging from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century. They cover such topics as the times when Eastern European immigrants in the USA encountered hostility and marginalization, the efforts to create American Polonia military formations during the WWI, the problem of ethnic mobilization among Ukrainian political migrants in the U.S. as well as how state policies influence the movement of people. All the contributions are extended and revised versions of the papers presented at the 7th Workshop American Ethnicity and Ethnic Community Building.

This transdisciplinary study gathers research papers that reveal the multifarious facets of the concept of «persuasion». It is argued that regardless of its degree of intentionality, the act of persuasion underlying each information item prompts the interlocutors to cross the borders of political, historical, linguistic, narrative, psychotherapeutic, and even marketing configurations. This volume comprises articles by scholars from three disciplines – literary studies, TEFL methodology, and history – from three universities – University College Cork (UCC), Katholieke Universiteit Leuven/Leuven Centre for Irish Studies (KU Leuven/LCIS), and Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg/Irish Studies Würzburg (JMU/ISWÜ) – in three European countries – Ireland, Belgium, and Germany. The contributors explore Irish ‘history in stories'from the vantage point of their national and disciplinary contexts, emphasizing cultural knowledge and historical lessons to be drawn from ‘texts'from and about the Irish past.

The 21st-century story economy is grounded on the premise that everyone – from individual social media users to political parties and multinational corporations – needs to become storytellers. At the same time, we witness the erosion of borders between fact, fiction, truth and lies within the public sphere. This book by literary researchers helps different audiences understand and analyse the rhetorical uses and potential dangers of narratives and fictionality. The contributors deal with various contemporary storytelling environments, ranging from social and news media to literary autofiction, and from documentary narration to sexual fantasy. Narratives and fictionality are an asset in today's communication environments, but awareness of their rhetorical and ethical pitfalls will make us better readers.

One of the most important drivers of the Anthropocene was a radical shift in what and how people eat. Industrial agriculture and meat production, new ways of processing, packaging, and distributing food, and the globalization of culinary habits not only upended traditional lifeways around the world but also continue to play a key role in climate change, biodiversity loss, and various other processes that are transforming the Earth system –now rendering food production increasingly precarious. Nowhere have these changes been more dramatic or consequential than in Asia.The essays in this volume examine how literary works from the Asian continent have responded to the profound changes in the region's foodscapes. They cover poetry, prose fiction, and literary non-fiction from China, India, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, and Taiwan.

The study focuses on spatio-temporal relations and their dependence on literary genres in Paul Auster's fiction. The author examines how selected novels reflect and redefine both the representation of space and formulaic patterns of genres they can be categorised as. Semiotic spaces created by Auster share some common features, such as dislocation, diversity or incongruity. Read as the postmodern ones, they are remodellings of novelistic chronotopes defined by, for instance, the tradition of detective fiction or the road novel. As such, Auster's dialogue with tradition in terms of genre-specified features and models of space has led to the emergence of generic variants exhibiting tenets slightly or extensively altered in comparison to their predecessors.

The book proposes a new category – heterotopia of affect – which builds upon Michel Foucault's typology. The category refers to changes of the places that accumulate contents of ideological, historical, religious, and national character. The book tells the history of a very Polish edifice as well as its surrounding cultural milieu and the history-creating role of the scientific community. The author focuses on the Staszic Palace whose fate reveals how – at different times in history – it catalyzed activities in search of radical changes in the mental landscape of the Polish community.

This book contributes to various political debates about Central Europe in terms of its literary-symbolic geography. The author contends that the research about Central Europe must, first of all, be exempted from its mythicisation. The idealisation of a past of monarchical and tolerant coexistence represents a dangerous stereotype to be deconstructed, rather than resurrected. The monograph offers an up-to-date critical view of Central Europe that takes into account various historical, geopolitical, and, above all, cultural-spiritual standpoints.

This book addresses the dynamics of normativity and resilience through the lens of translation. Engaging with both domestic and foreign cultural, social, economic, and ethical frameworks, the act of translation emerges as a dual force: it uncovers subtle and implicit pressures that encourage adherence to the dominant norm and has the capacity to question, disrupt or even subvert this norm. The concept of resilience, considered in its multifaceted roles as an aspect of the norm, as a means to withstand normative pressures, and as a normative demand in itself, further complicates the relationship between individual agency, systemic constraints, and collective expectations. Essays in this book explore how translation not only reflects but also contests the dynamics of power and identity within the fabric of societal and cultural norms.

The main focus of volume 51 is the analysis of an array of literary texts - all being different with regards to its themes and content. These include the tower poems of Friedrich Hölderlin, novels that explore human-animal relations, texts that historically contributed towards the portrayal of travel and tourism, works that represent Iceland in German literature, and memoires in which cross-cultural eco-criticism is expressed. Beyond the literary analyses, the notion of the Herero genocide is considered as discursive event, the Bundestag election slogans examined from a sociolinguistic perspective, and the teaching of collocations and the importance of phraseological competence in foreign languages investigated. Special contributions conclude the volume - all with a focus on belonging. Contributions here explore comparisons between forms of belonging in the Namibian, French and German cultures, narratives of mobility and belonging, belonging as conceptual tool for the analysis of autobiographies and music videos, the ways in which belonging is narrated, and the construction of Afropean identities.

This volume of “Neuere Lyrik” contains a selection of texts on Latin American poetry that focuses on its encounter – at times direct and dialogic; at times indirect or even oppositional – with foreign texts and traditions. The question it therefore raises is what constitutes the borders – cultural, medial, discursive, linguistic, etc. – of a poetic tradition to begin with, particularly today. While each text replies uniquely, their approaches can be broadly assigned to three distinct areas of inquiry: transcultural and transhistorical discourse; intermedial experimentation; and translation. Their attention to these liminal modes, moreover, prompts a remapping of poetry itself by asking how, in continually becoming foreign to itself, poetry is returned to its proper home.

This book challenges narratives of one-directional cultural flows from Europe to the Americas. This book examines the processes of symbolic cultivation of identity promoted by Armenian cultural elites in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, focusing on the transmission of positive language ideologies and emotional elements related to collective memory. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and a range of primary materials, this work sheds light on the role of the Armenian alphabet in legitimizing collective visions of ‘distinctiveness'and of the Armenian Genocide remembrance in shaping non-exclusive, transnational patterns of belonging. Die Beiträge des Sammelbands behandeln innovativ und vergleichend Fragen zu zeitgebundenen Phänomenen der periodischen Presse. Der zeitliche und mediale Rahmen spannt sich von Andreas Gryphius'Perikopendichtung über Zeitschriften und Kalender sowie das im Mittelpunkt stehende Zeitungswesen des 18. Jahrhunderts bis zum Feuilletonroman des Vormärz. Geographisch liegt der Fokus auf Mitteleuropa, dessen periodisches Pressewesen im behandelten Zeitraum eine wesentliche Ausweitung und Differenzierung erfuhr. Vor allem die Berichterstattung wird im Hinblick auf zentrale Phänomene wie Nachrichtenübermittlung, Aktualität, Periodizität, Beschleunigung und Entschleunigung in ihren materiellen und immateriellen Dimensionen untersucht, aber auch Wissensvermittlung und Räsonnement sowie das Anzeigenwesen und Paratexte kommen ins Blickfeld. This book presents a broad international and interdisciplinary perspective on the role of religion in American politics (both domestic and international). It is a result of cooperation between Jagiellonian University scholars and an international group of academics, including renowned American specialists, who study the interactions between religion and American politics. Coming not only from the USA, but also from Israel, Spain, Hungary, Poland, and the Palestinian territories, they provide a unique international perspective on how the USA deals with issues on the intersection of religion and politics. The book covers a variety of topics, including civil religion, legal issues, religious liberty, the public role of Black churches, religious influences on U.S. politics and on public attitudes toward a number of domestic and international policy issues.

Thus, they wish to emphasize that the Slovenes'ancestors did not settle an empty territory, but rather coexisted with other peoples and cultures ever since their arrival in the Eastern Alps. This has enabled them to build a community shaped by countless influences stemming from a long period of living alongside German, Romance, and South Slav neighbors in a melting pot of languages, cultures, and landscapes. The same reasons have most probably also contributed to the perception of their land as a “land in between.” Constituting a link between Eastern and Western Europe, Slovenia has recently also been increasingly perceived as the meeting point of Central Europe and the Balkans. Today, history still occupies the central position in the life of the Slovenes. The heroic period of emancipation has been completed and the Slovenes will be bracing themselves for a no less turbulent period of challenging “essentialist” notions of identity in order to create a thoroughly open society.

This book explores the influence and reception of Witold Gombrowicz's works in Argentina, where he spent over two decades and wrote much of his oeuvre. It examines the'Gombrowicz effect'in Argentinian literature, investigating who read his works, how his themes were integrated or ignored, and his impact on Argentinian culture and literature. Using comparative literature methods, the author analyses the case of Gombrowicz's literary appropriation. The study starts with key Spanish translations of Gombrowicz's texts and then assesses a series of Argentinian critical essays on his works. It focuses significantly on Argentinian writers, such as Ricardo Piglia, César Aira, and Osvaldo Lamborghini, who were influenced by Gombrowicz and engaged critically with his literature and his legendary life in Argentina.

The book addresses the theme of the advent of a ‘Matrix Land'as a pervasive environment of digital (virtual) reality in which humanity is destined to live increasingly distant from its original natural condition. The challenge posed by the Matrix Land is that of a future society in which lifeworlds and social relations lose the classic notions of time and space. Time and space become illusions and come to depend on algorithms. Virtual reality will prevail over human nature, so much so that human beings will think that what previously appeared real to them was instead pure imagination if not an illusion. Digital logic will replace analog thinking. What will remain of the human? According to the Author, the underlying sociological problem is not whether or not it will be possible to build AI and robots capable of emulating the human mind in whole or in large part. The sociological question is how new technologies change human life to the extent that, by modifying knowledge and communication, they modify people's relational life, social forms and therefore the entire society. The technologies that lead humanity towards the post/transhuman must be analyzed and evaluated based on the criteria of which human relationships they assume and which they produce. We need to see whether they support solutions that increase the ethical and empathetic sense of social relationships or, vice versa, fuel relationships devoid of human meaning.

This book is the first sustained scholarly effort to analyze reflections of Far Eastern, especially Buddhist-inspired, aesthetics, culture, and philosophy in the poetry and criticism of Robert Hass. Three main concerns of his work can be examined through Hass's reception of Buddhist ideas. Firstly, poetic-ontological perspectives on the self and desire, influenced by the concepts of anatta (non-self) and tanha (craving). Secondly, appreciations of the sublime in the near-at-hand, i.e., a Buddhist understanding of interdependence. Lastly, Hass's negative capability in the face of philosophical discussions concerning the limits of language. These concerns manifest themselves in an idealistic understanding of the haiku and in a Buddhist-Romantic effort to foster a more intimate relationship with nature. Additionally, they become evident in an ecopoetic desire to combat the abstractions and aberrations of modernity through Far Eastern aesthetics, as well as in a Buddhistderived understanding of paradox as a means of transcendence.

With few exceptions, the unsurpassable inequality between cultures on the literary field and in the imaginary Republic of Letters remains underemphasized and a more radical reconsideration is needed with regard to vernacular and peripheral forms of understanding cosmopolitan principles. The contributors voice insufficiently acknowledged cosmopolitan networks, frames, authorial positions, and cultural and literary practices, whose links to the nation-building process of Romanian literature are interwoven with their involvement in creating transnational routes and bridges. The book develops a systemic analysis of the legitimizing mechanisms and evolutionary paths by which semiperipheral literary cultures influence and transform the central ones, but also undermine the privileged position of the latter within the global literary field.

This collection brings together the short fictions published in Peter Motteux's The Gentleman's Journal, one of the main Restoration periodicals running from 1692 to 1694. These proto-novelistic fictions are accompanied by a scholarly introduction as well as notes and comments to make them more accessible to twenty-first-century readers. Published at a time when there was no firm agreement on the generic nature of short narrative prose fiction, this text corpus forms an important moment in the history of the novel. In the closing years of the seventeenth century, following major political revolutions, periodical culture in England began to develop. It nurtured an interest in all forms of reading material, including reading for pleasure in the form of narrative prose fiction. The generic and topical ranges included in the texts offered contemporary authors-to-be inspiration. This edition allows anybody interested in the history of the novel to see a genre being formed.

This study proposes an epistemological model on the basis of a streamlined and heavily modified German Idealism. With an analytical focus on the French Second Empire, the underlying research question is rather straightforward: how is knowledge created in material modernity? Using my epistemological model as a methodology for cultural criticism, a second research question emerges: how does the creation of knowledge in material modernity affect human existence? In this context, my argument revolves around the work of Charles Baudelaire, who, as the first poet of modernity, serves as a cultural-critical gateway. I conclude that the specific conditions of material modernity eventually produce an epistemological darkness ultimately leading to fatalism in the guise of a materialist teleology.

Based on the analytical framework of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ernest Becker, Controlling Animals makes use of the notion of the heroic ideal to exposedysfunctional attempts at immortality through the interpretation of three works of fiction. In this work, the author demonstrates to readers the flawed pursuit of attempting to avert death through the subjugation of animals. This pursuit is often orchestrated under the guise of the biblical concept of dominion from the Book of Genesis. In short, readers will gain a deeper understanding of the inextricable bond to the natural world and the fragile and tenuous existence in which humans live. The text also underscores the impending need for humans to make meaningful choices that are useful to the world while maintaining respect and deference to their animal co-inhabitants.

The book is an attempt at a monographic approach to the problem of the reception of 17th-century Dutch painting in modern literature. However, the author deals not only with contemporary works but also with the texts of 19th-century writers and critics, most often French, who shaped the so-called myth of the Dutch Golden Age. Readers learn the historically conditioned models of perception of 17th-century Dutch painting. The original achievement is the genre key, which is a consequence of the thesis on the mediation of the 20th-century reception of Dutch Golden Age painting in 19th-century European literature and art criticism. Contemporary writers are revising the concept of realism; they cannot talk about Vermeer's View of Delft without referring to Proust's petit pan de mur jaune. They read still lifes through Chardin and Cézanne or revive the myth of Rembrandt – a self-portraitist who analyzed himself. Also noteworthy is the section devoted to the little Dutch masters – Willem Dyster, Pieter de Hooch, Hendrick Avercamp, Hercules Seghers and Pieter Saenredam.

The book explores a newly compiled corpus of American Gulf War captivity narratives, their claim to truth and their construction of identity and ideology, as well as concepts of heroism and anti-heroism. Moreover, it probes the texts'complex authorship, uncovers their role in promoting cultural stereotypes and in propagating violence. Hence, this study is deeply involved with uncovering narrative strategies of othering and with the construction of orientalist alterities. The findings are then connected to broader social debates in the USA. Unpacking themes of alterity, heroism, and violence, the research underscores the Gulf War captivity narratives'role in justifying aggression and in shaping U.S. American national identity, underscoring the need for continued scrutiny.

This book retrieves the narrative and social context of Brazilian historical performances and artistic movements to restore, with the support of a vast literature review, aesthetic analysis and the debate around engagement, the due complexity to the multifaceted concept of political theatre. Broadening the perspective, it addresses one of the most significant contemporary resonances of such an itinerary: Augusto Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed, challenging canons of the role of performers and spectators. The research also seeks, by refusing pamphleteering or professorial responses, to shed light on the contested actuality of theatre's social function, especially after the extreme right wave that has been testing the usefulness of traditional institutions.

The book is the first academic study of Henry Beissel's bilingual poetic autobiography. The Canadian poet going back through memories to his childhood in Nazi Germany, wrote a long poem in English and reinterpreted it in German – his mother tongue, neglected for decades. The study offers a comparative reading of the two distinctly different versions of the poem, juxtaposing various perspectives, voices and recollections. Beissel's bilingual project is depicted as'memory workshop', that mediates between cultures. The work examines Beissel's biography and the theories of memory, autobiography and bilingualism. It refers to metafiction, the poetic child's figure and writing trauma, as well as explores poetic complexities of memory and identity.
