In Paper Monsters, Samuel Fallon charts the striking rise, at the turn to the seventeenth century, of a new species of textual being: the serial, semifictional persona. When Thomas Nashe introduced his charismatic alter ego Pierce Penilesse in a 1592 text, he described the figure as a'paper monster,'not fashioned but'begotten'into something curiously like life. The next decade bore this description out, as Pierce took on a life of his own, inspiring other writers to insert him into their own works. And Pierce was hardly alone: such figures as the polemicist Martin Marprelate, the lovers Philisides and Astrophil, the shepherd-laureate Colin Clout, the prodigal wit Euphues, and, in an odd twist, the historical author Robert Greene all outgrew their fictional origins, moving from text to text and author to author, purporting to speak their own words, even surviving their creators'deaths, and installing themselves in the process as agents at large in the real world of writing, publication, and reception.In seeking to understand these'paper monsters'as a historically specific and rather short-lived phenomenon, Fallon looks to the rapid expansion of the London book trade in the years of their ascendancy. Personae were products of print, the medium that rendered them portable, free-floating figures. But they were also the central fictions of a burgeoning literary field: they embodied that field's negotiations between manuscript and print, and they forged a new form of public, textual selfhood. Sustained by the appropriative rewritings they inspired, personae came to seem like autonomous citizens of the literary public. Fallon argues that their status as collective fictions, passed among writers, publishers, and readers, positioned personae as the animating figures of what we have come to call'print culture.'

The Pickwick Papers is Charles Dickens's first novel is a sequence of loosely related adventures. The novel's main character, Samuel Pickwick, Esquire, is a kind and wealthy old gentleman, and the founder and perpetual president of the Pickwick Club. To extend his researches into the quaint and curious phenomena of life, he suggests that he and three other'Pickwickians'(Mr. Nathaniel Winkle, Mr. Augustus Snodgrass, and Mr. Tracy Tupman) should make journeys to places remote from London and report on their findings to the other members of the club. Their travels throughout the English countryside by coach provide the chief theme of the novel. A distinctive and valuable feature of the work is the generally accurate description of the old coaching inns of England. Its main literary value and appeal is formed by its numerous memorable characters. Each character in The Pickwick Papers, as in many other Dickens novels, is drawn comically, often with exaggerated personality traits. Alfred Jingle, who joins the cast in chapter two, provides an aura of comic villainy. His devious tricks repeatedly land the Pickwickians in trouble. These include Jingle's nearly-successful attempted elopement with the spinster Rachael Wardle of Dingley Dell manor, misadventures with Dr. Slammer, and others. Further humor is provided when the comic cockney Sam Weller makes his advent in chapter 10 of the novel. First seen working at the White Hart Inn in The Borough, Weller is taken on by Mr. Pickwick as a personal servant and companion on his travels and provides his own oblique ongoing narrative on the proceedings. The relationship between the idealistic and unworldly Pickwick and the astute cockney Weller has been likened to that between Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Other notable adventures include Mr. Pickwick's attempts to defend a lawsuit brought by his landlady, Mrs. Bardell, who (through an apparent misunderstanding on her part) is suing him for breach of promise. Another is Mr. Pickwick's incarceration at Fleet Prison for his stubborn refusal to pay the compensation to her — because he doesn't want to give a penny to Mrs. Bardell's lawyers, the unscrupulous firm of Messrs. Dodson and Fogg. The generally humorous tone is here briefly replaced by biting social satire (including satire of the legal establishment). This foreshadows major themes in Dickens's later books.

How do poems and novels create a sense of mind? What does literary criticism say in conversation with other disciplines that addresses problems of consciousness? In Paper Minds, Jonathan Kramnick takes up these vital questions, exploring the relations between mind and environment, the literary forms that uncover such associations, and the various fields of study that work to illuminate them. Opening with a discussion of how literary scholarship's particular methods can both complement and remain in tension with corresponding methods particular to the sciences, Paper Minds then turns to a series of sharply defined case studies. Ranging from eighteenth-century poetry and haptic theories of vision, to fiction and contemporary problems of consciousness, to landscapes in which all matter is sentient, to cognitive science and the rise of the novel, Kramnick's essays are united by a central thematic authority. The calculated use of media by those in power is a phenomenon dating back at least to the seventeenth century, as Harold Weber demonstrates in this illuminating study of the relation of print culture to kingship under England's Charles II. Seventeenth-century London witnessed an enormous expansion of the print trade, and with this expansion came a revolutionary change in the relation between political authority—especially the monarchy—and the printed word.Weber argues that Charles'reign was characterized by a particularly fluid relationship between print and power. The press helped bring about both the deconsecration of divine monarchy and the formation of a new public sphere, but these processes did not result in the progressive decay of royal authority. Charles fashioned his own semiotics of power out of the political transformations that had turned his world upside down.By linking diverse and unusual topics—the escape of Charles from Worcester, the royal ability to heal scrofula, the sexual escapades of the'merry monarch,'and the trial and execution of Stephen College—Weber reveals the means by which Charles took advantage of a print industry instrumental to the creation of a new dispensation of power, one in which the state dominates the individual through the supplementary relationship between signs and violence. Weber's study brings into sharp relief the conflicts involving public authority and printed discourse, social hierarchy and print culture, and authorial identity and responsibility—conflicts that helped shape the modern state.

This study of the literary culture in Britain in the years after Waterloo begins with an account of two fatal duels, the famous duel of 16 February 1821, in which John Scott, editor of the London Magazine, fell, and the less well known duel of 26 March 1822, in which Alexander Boswell, son of Johnson's biographer, was killed. These duels, Richard Cronin suggests, bring into sharp focus the distinctive features of literary culture in the years after Waterloo. The book ranges widely but at its centre are the three literary phenomena that best define the period: Walter Scott's novels, Byron's Don Juan, and the new literary magazines. It was a culture constituted not by the doctrine of sympathy that its leading writers held in common but by the antagonisms that divided them, a culture in which England vied with Scotland, literary and political principles converged, and there was a volatile relationship between the public and the private. These were the years in which publishing became an industry serving a mass readership, and literature came to be decisively identified with print rather than with manuscript. Its most prized cultural products were miscellaneous. Superficial, even heartless, responses to the world were valued. Male writers responded aggressively to the threat that literature might be a kind of writing largely consumed by women and increasingly produced by them. This was the culture that writers such as Wordsworth repudiated, but the relationship between the culture that Wordsworth represented and the culture that he opposed, like the relationship between duellists, was at once violently aggressive and mutually supportive: each, as many writers of the period recognized, was dependent on the other.

Woolf Writing the World addresses such themes as the creation of worlds through literary writing, Woolf's reception as a world writer, world wars and the centenary of the First World War, and natural worlds in Woolf's writings. The volume explores the ways that 20th and 21st century art, drama, fiction and philosophy have been influenced and inspired by the work of the Bloomsbury Group and their London milieu. By comparing and contrasting the artistic, philosophical and literary works of the Bloomsbury Group with later artists, writers and thinkers, such as the Singh Twins, Harold Bloom, C. K. Stead, Jeanette Winterson and Ali Smith, amongst many others, each essay examines how, in T. S. Eliot's words, the past has been “altered by the present as much as the present is directed by the past”.

In the summer of 2008, the twelfth in a series of biennial conferences on the Literature of Region and Nation was held at Aberdeen University in the North-East of Scotland. Over fifty scholars, representing no fewer than twenty different countries, convened for the occasion; and twenty-two of the papers presented are included in this volume.As at previous conferences in the series, the papers range widely in approach, in subject-matter and in geographical coverage: readers of this book will find explorations of literature from all five continents. The Old Story, with a Difference: Pickwick's Vision explores in radically different ways from most approaches to nineteenth-century studies the tropes and metaphors of vision in Dickens'first novel, The Pickwick Papers. Julian Wolfreys provides a close reading of Dickens'Pickwick Papers and argues that this novel is an exemplary text for the re-consideration of concepts such as literature, history, the novel, and the whole notion of Victorian studies. True to the purpose of the Victorian Critical Interventions Series, Wolfreys challenges scholars to rethink the use of a canonical text in Victorian literature. Challenging the commonplaces of historicist criticism, and demonstrating the need for a return to close reading, The Old Story, with a Difference presents a reading of the novel grounded in the twinned rigors of materialist historiography and theoretical inflections tending toward attentiveness to epistemological and linguistic concerns. Through such an orientation, Wolfreys unpacks the relation between the tropes of visuality and matters of memory, history, and the necessity of fiction to bear witness to the cultures, past and present, from which literature becomes generated and which it mediates. In doing so, he situates an argument for rethinking Dickens'novel as the inaugural novel of Victorian fiction par excellence, in that novel's efforts to remain open to the traces of the past in particular ways. The Old Story, with a Difference holds profound implications for the study not only of Dickens'works but Victorian literature and culture in general. Provocative and inventive, this ambitious analysis will challenge, goad, and invite the reader to return to acts of materialist reading informed by ethical and ideological urgency, rather than relapsing into the commonplaces of humanist cliché.

To mark the centenary of Mervyn Peake's birth, the Sussex Centre for Folklore, Fairy Tales and Fantasy (University of Chichester) organized an international conference in July 2011 entitled “Mervyn Peake and the Fantasy Tradition.”Papers were presented by scholars, artists, and writers from all over the world, and here we have a selection of them. No other comparable collection of essays on Peake has ever been published.The contributors take a wide variety of approaches to Peake's work – not just the Gormenghast trilogy but also his books for children, his poetry, and his art. They compare Peake with other writers, explore the world of Gormenghast, and examine his characters and his poetical prose style. Two essays approach the graphic side of Peake's oeuvre: the drawings he made in the manuscripts of the Titus books, and his illustrations for Household Tales by the Brothers Grimm.The book contains 60 illustrations and two tables.

Sibylle Bergs Werke wurden erstmals im Zusammenhang mit der Diskussion um die so genannte Popliteratur der 1990er Jahre einem größeren Publikum bekannt. Inzwischen ist sie eine der renommiertesten Autor/innen des deutschsprachigen Literaturbetriebs, auch wenn sie in diesem eine spezielle Position einnimmt. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bands bestimmen ihre spezifische Position «am Rande des Populären». Anlässlich des 20-jährigen Jubiläums eines fulminanten Debüts – das heute als Kultbuch geltende «Ein paar Leute suchen das Glück und lachen sich tot» (1997) – wird das seither entstandene Werk Sibylle Bergs erstmals literaturwissenschaftlich umfassend untersucht und liefert damit einer künftigen Forschung zum Œuvre Bergs die maßgebliche Grundlage.

This collection unites 21 papers mainly presented at the 21st IAUPE (International Association of University Professors of English) Conference held at the Valetta Campus of the University of Malta in mid-July 2010. Most periods of world-wide literature in English from Anglo-Saxon to the present day were represented as well as many aspects of language and linguistics. One section «Writers and the Mediterranean» was of particular local interest.

This is a study of the politics, the commerce, and the aesthetics of heritage culture in the shape of authors'manuscripts. Draft or working manuscripts survive in quantity from the eighteenth century when, with the rise of print, readers learnt to value'the hand'as an index of individuality and the blotted page, criss-crossed by deletion and revision, as a sign of genius. Since then, collectors have fought over manuscripts, libraries have curated them, the rich have stashed them away in investment portfolios, students have squeezed meaning from them, and we have all stared at them behind exhibition glass. Why do we trade them, conserve them, and covet them? Most, after all, are just the stuff left over after the novel or book of poetry goes into print. Poised on the boundary where precious treasure becomes abject waste, litter, and mess, modern literary manuscripts hover between riches and rubbish. In a series of case studies, this book explores manuscript's expressive agency and its capacity to provoke passion--a capacity ever more to the fore in the twenty-first century now that books are assembled via word-processing software and authors no longer leave in such quantity those paper trails behind them. It considers manuscripts as residues of meaning that print is unable to capture: manuscript as fragment art, as property, as waste paper. It asks what it might mean to re-read print in the shadow of manuscript. Case studies of Samuel Johnson, James Boswell, Walter Scott, Frances Burney, and Jane Austen--writers from the first great period of manuscript survival--are interspersed with discussions of William Godwin's record keeping, the Cairo genizah, Katie Paterson's'Future Library'project, Andy Warhol's and Muriel Spark's self-archiving, Cornelia Parker's reclamation art, and more.

Tolkien's work in today's Fantasy literature. It is an indisputable fact that The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) is one of the most influential works of the 20th century and remains culturally relevant to this day. Today's Fantasy literature and popular culture is so saturated and full of LOTR's influence that it is difficult to imagine a culture without it. Even a person who has never read the original work or consumed any other adaptation of it will most likely recognise the names of Frodo, Gollum and Gandalf; and any modern reader of Fantasy literature and its branching genres like Science Fiction or Horror will know Tolkien's name. Yet it is not just the readers who were influenced by Tolkien, on the contrary, following LOTR's wake a whole array of authors began to write their own works, featuring fantastical worlds filled with trolls, wizards, elves, dwarves and the like. Most novels on today's Fantasy best-seller and classics lists such as George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire, Terry Pratchett's Discworld or Ursula Le Guinn's Earthsea Chronicles, to name just a select few, share definite traces of Tolkienesque elements, and, it can be argued that even those who actively dislike Tolkien and his work and thus went on to create something decidedly different are still influenced by him, even if in a spiteful sense. So, it is not a question of if there are traces of Tolkien's work in today's Fantasy literature, but rather to what extent. Thus, after explaining the chosen methodology and theoretical approach this paper will take to this subject, there will be a section dedicated to a pre-Tolkien world and the state of literature at the time, in an effort to fully understand the scope of Tolkien's influence. Thereafter, a quick summary of both works will be given to introduce still unfamiliar readers to the subject matter that will later be analysed in detail. The next two chapters will deal with the analysis of all shared aspects and differences between the two works chosen, before lastly presenting a conclusion of all findings and offering a final verdict on the state of modern Fantasy literature.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Bonn, language: English, abstract: This paper aims to point out how the authenticity of Disney's depiction of cultures differing from white American culture in Mulan and Moana can influence the perception of represented cultures by analysing raised criticism with respect to the postcolonial concepts of white supremacy, othering and cultural appropriation. At the same time it shall be shown if, by means of Mulan and Moana, Disney manages to promote gender equality with its representation of male and female roles in both films by examining it from a feminist perspective. In order to do so, this paper subdivides into four main parts. The following chapter will offer a brief introduction to feminist theory and gender roles by focusing on feminist theory and intersectionality, the role of women as members of society and family and the representation of women in media. The third chapter will concentrate on the representation of cultures and ethnicities in media and take a look at postcolonial concepts in order to critically analyse the authenticity of the representation of Chinese and Polynesian culture through an American film studio. Chapter four, the first part of the actual analysis, will be provided in three subchapters dealing with aspects of gendered representation. Thereafter, the fifth chapter will scrutinise the authenticity of cultural representations in the two films with the aim of pointing out what has improved and what aspects still require closer research by Disney. The final chapter will then synthesise the findings to draw a comparison of the two movies and find out how the representations of gender, culture and ethnicity in Disney movies have changed from 1998 to 2016. This shall offer a conclusion about the authenticity of the cultural representation and portrayal of gender roles for each movie.

Master's Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Freiburg (English Department), language: English, abstract: This paper uses both distant and close reading methods to analyse reader reception of Bernardine Evaristo's works “The Emperor's Babe”, “Mr. Loverman” and her Booker Award winning publication “Girl, Woman, Other”. Through experimental form and style, approachable characters and humorous style of writing, Evaristo successfully draws the contemporary reader into the story world and educates her on the constructedness of cognitive borders and social categorizations (sex, gender, age, race, class et cetera). After the reader crosses the border into the story world, she follows the individual journeys of the fictional characters with the help of mind-reading and narrative empathy and leaves the story world with differences in cognitive processing” followed by effects on “cognition, perception and action. To empirically analyse the educational, border-crossing effect of a literary work that reaches beyond the reading experience, this paper uses reception data from Goodreads in the form of reader profile information and reviews on “The Emperor's Babe”, “Mr. Loverman” and “Girl, Woman, Other”. After a theoretical introduction to the historic development of the academic interest in both border and (empirical) reception studies, the results section will outline the major findings of a descriptive statistical analysis of the retrieved data for the reception of all novels. Each novel's reception will then be looked at individually through distant and close reading of the respective book's narrative techniques. A discussion section will compare the findings of the distant and close readings of all three books under discussion. The paper will close with a critical summary of the findings in the conclusion and give an outlook on the advantages and opportunities provided by the study of the subversive, border-crossing effects of literature in general. The influence of fiction on a reader's personal life and social cognition has been of interest to academia ever since the beginnings of reader-response criticism and the cognitive turn of the 1980s. Literature, after all, has the power to serve as a springboard for subversive thought, the precursory movement of a transformation of social and cultural structures. Reader response and reception theorists, cognitive literary critics and empirical receptionists have thus been trying to empirically explain the transformative, subversive powers of literature.

Does it matter when and where a poem was written? Or on what kind of paper? How do the author's ideas about inspiration or how a poem should be written precondition the moment of putting pen to paper? This monograph explores these questions in offering the first full-length study of Ted Hughes's poetic process. Hughes's extensive archives held in the UK and US form the basis of the book's unique exploration of his writing process. It analyses Hughes's techniques throughout his career, arguing that his self-conscious experimentation with the processes by which he wrote profoundly affected both the style and subject matter of his work. The book considers Hughes's changing ideas about how poetry ‘ought'to be written, discussing how these affect his creative process. It presents a fresh exploration of Hughes's major collections across the span of his career to build a detailed illustration of how his writing methods altered. The book thus restores the materiality of paper and ink to Hughes's poems, reading their histories, the stories they tell of their composition, and of the intellectual and creative environments in which they were gestated, born and matured. In the process, it offers a template for new approaches in authorship studies, reframing one of the twentieth century's most iconic literary figures through the unseen histories of his creative process.

Looking at the early modern period in Europe, magic used to have another meaning for people. Its aim was not to entertain others, nor was it something fictional. Magic was real and existing. Today, magic is still something people are surrounded by whether through performances or by being addressed in fantasy books, magic is entertaining people today. Joanne Rowling is a British author who is best known for the Harry Potter series. With more than 500 million sold copies worldwide, the Harry Potter series is the bestselling book series of all time. The fantasy series consists of seven books and they allow the reader to discover the magical world that Rowling created. This paper will show that early modern ideas of magic can be found in the Harry Potter series and that on this basis, J.K Rowling reframes the fight between good and evil, which gives her the opportunity to humanize and demonize characters. The focus will be on the characters Hermione Granger and Bellatrix Lestrange. Focusing on the Harry Potter series, this paper will analyse how Hermione and Bellatrix are presented compared to the image of early modern practitioners of magic. First, a general overview of the early modern concepts of magic and religion will be given. After that, the focus will be on the early modern concepts of white magic and black magic, addressing the key concepts that will be important for the analysis. Lastly, the theory part of this paper will have a look at the specific concepts of witches that were present in the early modern period.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,8, TU Dortmund, language: English, abstract: This thesis will examine the ways that different intercultural issues are represented in picture books and talk about how these representations may affect the reader. Therefore, several approaches will be used. As this paper primarily focuses on the picture book format, the text itself, along with the illustrations, will be closely examined. It is a fact that the illustrations in picture books not only represent the story that is put into words, but also add additional messages and background information to the written text. One of the goals of this paper is to find the messages based on the interanimation of text and illustrations and interpret them according to the concept of interculturality. The authors and illustrators of the discussed books are another part to focus on. It is important to note whether they are part of the culture they write about and illustrate, or not. It is crucial to take a closer look at the cultural background of authors and illustrators, as this paper examines picture books in connection to cultural issues. As much as possible, it will be examined in how far the biographies of the author and the illustrator have influenced the picture book. This knowledge then can give the book new aspects of meaning and might slightly change the message that is meant to be delivered. Also, it helps the reader to locate the story within a certain cultural range. This background information is closely linked to the context the book was written and illustrated in. In addition to that, the context in which the story is being perceived also needs to be examined to gain an overall analysis. Finally, this paper will consider the recipient and how he or she perceives the words and the illustrations. Therefore, and in compliance to reception aesthetics and reader-response criticism, potential meanings of the text will be considered and compared to each other. Important aspects to be considered here are the desired target group along with their age range and their cultural background, and the time of the first publishing of the picture book.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Wuppertal, language: English, abstract: The representation of love and marriage in Charlotte Brontë's'Jane Eyre'and Elizabeth Gaskell's'North and South'does not seem to be fundamentally different when looking at the story level, the content level of what is narrated (cf. Fabian 172), alone. The female and male characters of both novels struggle in achieving a marriage bond at first due to the class relation between the both of them, but after the heroines inherited a sum of money they return to the heroes'aids. Of course this is just a brief summary of the novels'plots to show the similarities both share in their plot structure. This paper, however, will look at the discourse level of both novels thus looking at the presentation level of how the story is narrated (cf. Fabian 172) in order to measure whether or not the novels by Brontë and Gaskell are as similar as a plain summary suggests. For this purpose this paper will perspectivise love and marriage in Gaskell's North and South and Brontë's Jane Eyre, meaning it will analyse the narration, the focalization, the representation of speech, and the representation of thought presented in both novels. The analyses of these categories will, of course, focus on the relevant love couples of both narratives, Margaret Hale and John Thornton in'North and South'and Jane Eyre and Edward Rochester in'Jane Eyre'. The first chapters will present the tools and techniques that will be used later for the analyses of both novels, presenting first the tools for the analysis of narration and focalization and after that the techniques for the representation of speech and thought. The following chapters will use these tools for the analysis of Charlotte Brontë's'Jane Eyre', focussing initially on the narration and focalization in the novel before turning to the representation of speech and thought. The chapters after that will be concerned with Elizabeth Gaskell's'North and South'similarly; it will at first analyse the narration and focalization prior to the analysis of the representation of speech and thought. The last chapter will recapitulate the findings of the analyses of both novels in order to evaluate if both can be said to shape the same type of love and marriage, like a brief look on the story level suggests, or if there are differences that can be observed on the discourse level.

After general and specific review regarding the importance of listening, this paper addresses the frustrations for the L2 student, and then offers teacher strategies to calm student learning/listening anxieties. The purpose of this paper is to remind everyone about the importance of listening, to remind ordinary people, students, professors. This paper will make them rethink; also, it will help them with the solutions. “Listening” has its own frustrations and anxieties. So additionally, this paper will have us consider these frustrations and anxieties and arrive at smart simple solutions to facilitate listening for everyone. Listening is a complex process and the reason why students face difficulties even if they have high language competence. This paper looks at these difficulties that students face during academic listening and listening the anxiety and its theories. Also, reviews the relation of student- professor during the listening process. Students learning a second language confront different stages; there are shown five stages of listening comprehension, and the advance of listening during the five stages. There are the techniques of reduction of anxiety and students help in listening activities. In this paper are given the best listening strategies, methods, modification of language process, and the effects of four types listening support.

As digital humanities in recent years have been taking roots in major international research centers, this edited volume consisting of ten papers including the introduction seeks to examine the current state of the digital/data-driven research in history and neighboring disciplines dealing with Southeast Europe as well as with the Ottoman Empire and to give an interdisciplinary impetus by bringing together international scholars working with various digital approaches. The included papers give a broad introduction into the field and follow various methods of digital analysis and visualization incorporating approaches like corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis,GIS (Geographic Information Systems), agent-based modelling, computationalstatistics etc.
