The aim of the book is to encourage discussion among experts on De ira, a text of philosophical nature, by reading it page by page, from a philosophical, philological, and literary perspective (a multidisciplinary choice which is the conditio sine qua non of all judicious research on Seneca). Moreover, the way in which each of these close readings is conducted adds an additional value: they each deal with a section of the text, presenting all the data necessary for its understanding. All together, they cover the whole work. Each of them is also an attempt at a global interpretation of the treatise, examined through the particular framing of the textual passage around which the “Lectures plurielles” are conceived. Around this “polyphonic” analysis of the text, we have built a structure that aims to offer the reader a complete reference work on all the issues of the De ira. Sources, manuscript tradition, images, political and philosophical concepts, posterity – in short, all the aspects that a traditional commentary of the text would not have allowed us to distinguish so clearly – find their place here. This book is therefore aimed at specialists as well as students or anyone interested in the thought of emotions in antiquity.

Going beyond exclusively national perspectives, this volume considers the reception of the ancient Greek poet Sappho and her first Latin translator, Catullus, as a literary pair who transmit poetic culture across the world from the early 20th century to the present. Sappho's and Catullus'reception has shaped a transnational network of poets and intellectuals, helping to define ideas of origins, gender, sexuality and national identities. This book shows that across time and cultures translations and rewritings of Sappho and Catullus articulate modernist poetics of myth and fragmentation, forms of confessionalism and post-modern pastiche. The inquiry focuses on Italian and North American poetry as two central yet understudied hubs of Sappho's and Catullus'modern reception, also linked by a rich mutual intellectual exchange: key case-studies include Giovanni Pascoli, Ezra Pound, H.D., Salvatore Quasimodo, Robert Lowell, Rosita Copioli and Anne Carson, and cover a wide range of unpublished archival material. Texts are analysed and compared through reception and translation theories and inserted within the current debate on the Classics as World Literature, demonstrating how sustained transnational poetic discourse employs the ancient pair to expand notions of literary origins and redefine poetry's relationship to human existence.

The theme of Medea in Portuguese literature has mainly given rise to the writing of new plays on the subject. The central episode in the Portuguese rewritings in the last two centuries is the one that takes place in Corinth, i.e., the break between Medea and Jason, on the one hand, and Medea's killing of their children in retaliation, on the other. Besides the complex play of feelings that provides this episode with very real human emotions, gender was a key issue in determining the interest that this story elicited in a society in search of social renovation, after profound political transformations – during the transition between dictatorship and democracy which happened in 1974 – that generated instability and established a requirement to find alternative rules of social intercourse in the path towards a new Portugal.

The Fifth International Conference on the Ancient Novel, which was held in Houston, Texas, in the fall of 2015, brought together scholars and students of the ancient novel from all over the world in order to share new and significant developments about this fascinating field of study and its important place in the field of Classical Studies. The essays contained in these two volumes are clear evidence that the ancient novel has become a valuable part of the Classics canon and its scholarly attempts to understand the ancient Graeco-Roman world.

This volume sets out to explore the complex relationship between Horace and Seneca. It is the first book that examines the interface between these different and yet highly comparable authors with consideration of their œuvres in their entirety. The fourteen chapters collected here explore a wide range of topics clustered around the following four themes: the combination of literature and philosophy; the ways in which Seneca's choral odes rework Horatian material and move beyond it; the treatment of ethical, poetic, and aesthetic questions by the two authors; and the problem of literary influence and reception as well as ancient and modern reflections on these problems. While the intertextual contacts between Horace and Seneca themselves lie at the core of this project, it also considers the earlier texts that serve as sources for both authors, intermediary steps in Roman literature, and later texts where connections between the two philosopher-poets are drawn. Although not as obviously palpable as the linkage between authors who share a common generic tradition, this uneven but pervasive relationship can be regarded as one of the most prolific literary interactions between the early Augustan and the Neronian periods. A bidirectional list of correspondences between Horace and Seneca concludes the volume.

Lustrum Band 57 besteht aus Berichten über den römischen Lyriker Catull und den römischen Fabeldichter Phaedrus. Ihre Verfasserinnen, Marilyn B. Skinner und Ursula Gärtner sind international ausgewiesene Expertinnen, die die Forschungsdiskussion zu den beiden Dichtern in den letzten Jahrzehnten maßgeblich mitbestimmt haben. Marilyn B. Skinner bespricht umfassend und kritisch die Forschungsliteratur über Catull der Jahre 1985-2015, Ursula Gärtner die über Phaedrus der Jahre 1975-2014. Die kritische Diskussion übergeordneter Fragestellungen (z. B. des Problems des Autobiographischen) kommt bei beiden Berichten ebenso zur Geltung wie die Diskussion einzelner Gedichte.

Der Untersuchung liegen Hexenszenen und magische Ritualschilderungen in Schlüsseltexten aus der hellenistisch-alexandrinischen Epoche bis in die julisch-claudische Kaiserzeit zugrunde: Dabei schlägt das Buch die Brücke zwischen den Begebenheiten realer antiker Magiepraxis und der literarischen Darstellung durch die Dichter. Zur Untersuchung einer jeden Zauberszene gehört deswegen die grundsätzliche Erklärung des magischen Motivschatzes – z. B. von Zauberarten, -prinzipien, -termini und Ingredienzien –, eine sorgfältige Analyse des rituellen Prozederes in seinen einzelnen Schritten, eine Gegenüberstellung mit den griechischsprachigen Zauberpapyri als fassbarer Realienquelle für antike Zauberrituale sowie eine ausgiebige Deutung des magischen Geschehens unter Beachtung der Funktion der Magie im jeweiligen literarischen Werk. Die erzielten Ergebnisse fügen sich dabei zu einem stimmigen Urteil über die Entstehung und Veränderung der antiken Zauberszene und des Hexenbildes, ja lassen dabei eine zunehmend fiktionalisierte und immer stärker gewertete Darstellungsweise des Magischen durch die Dichter erkennen. Eine stilistisch ansprechende Übersetzung und eine dem übergeordneten Verständnis dienende gliedernde Inhaltsangabe ist einer jeden Zauberszene beigegeben.

This volume contains the papers of the colloquium Protohistory of the Text, which took place on 28 and 29 November 2013 at the Universitat de Barcelona. Each paper is devoted to the transmission of a major classical Latin text. The contributors are distinguished scholars from around the world such as Paolo Fedeli, Peter Kruschwitz, Marc Mayer, Stephen Oakley, Oronzo Pecere, Antonio Ramírez de Verger and Richard Tarrant. They discuss texts ranging from the comedies of Plautus and Terence through the writings of Cicero, Livy and Virgil to the Historia Augusta. Their papers review existing scholarship and offer new insights into the transmission of these texts and especially into their protohistory, the phase of their history that precedes the earliest surviving manuscripts.

Die Römische Tragödie der archaischen Epoche, der augusteischen Klassik und der frühen Kaiserzeit ist mit Ausnahme der Tragödien Senecas nur in zahlreichen Fragmenten erhalten. In über 30 Aufsätzen aus den Jahren 1972 bis 2014, von denen eine Reihe unpubliziert ist, zeigt der Verfasser, dass die politische Grundierung ein durchgehendes Charakteristikum der Römischen Tragödie ist. Die Sagen von den zahlreichen griechischen Helden, die seit Homers Zeit nach Italien kamen, lieferten dankbare Stoffe, um die römische Frühgeschichte aufzubessern. Diese aitiologischen Tendenzen verliehen der republikanischen und augusteischen Tragödie einen panegyrischen Grundzug. Es ist durch die politischen Verhältnisse der Kaiserzeit bedingt, dass die Panegyrik vielfach in Opposition umschlug. Weiterhin wird herausgestellt, dass aufgrund dieser Entwicklung Seneca aus stoischem Blickwinkel den Einzelnen in den Mittelpunkt rückte und einerseits seine Unfähigkeit zu einer disziplinierten Lebensweise, andererseits seine Fähigkeit, ein widriges Schicksal souverän zu meistern, zur Darstellung brachte.

In this book, a sequel to Traditions and Contexts in the Poetry of Horace (Cambridge, 2002), ten leading Latin scholars provide specially commissioned in-depth discussions of the poetry of Catullus, one of ancient Rome's most favourite and best loved poets. Some chapters focus on the collection as a whole and the interrelationship of various poems; others deal with intertextuality and translation, and Catullus'response to his Greek predecessors, both classical and Hellenistic. Two of the key subjects are the communication of desire and the presentation of the real world. Seneca was a man of many facets: statesman, dramatist, philosopher, prose stylist. His life was marked by extremes of fortune - extremes that are reflected in much of his writing, and in the vicissitudes of his reputation in later centuries. This volume brings together some outstanding essays written about him over the past four decades, and illustrates the diversity of approaches by which modern critics have attempted to understand this multifaceted figure. Just as Seneca's writings often reflect his times, so current critical approaches often reflect issues in contemporary thought and society. Several of the essays have been revised by their authors for this volume, and two of them are translated for the first time. A new introduction places the articles within the context of recent academic thought and criticism. All Latin has been translated.

Important research in recent decades, along with the publication of P.Mil.Vogl. VIII 309 ('the Milan Posidippus papyrus') in 2001, have reinvigorated the study of Hellenistic epigram. Yet, scholarship on this genre often remains fragmented according to disciplinary sub-specialty and approach: some scholars focus on poets of Meleager's Garland, others on Philip's; some on inscriptional epigram, others on literary; each approaching the genre with different motives and questions. In this volume, expert scholars offer those less familiar with the genre an introduction to all aspects of Hellenistic epigram—from models and forms inherited from inscriptional epigram to poetology, sub-genera, epigrammatic intertexts, and ancient and modern reception. Even specialists will find here fresh explorations of epigram, along with new directions for scholarship.

The lives of Catullus and Horace overlap by a dozen years in the first century BC. Yet, though they are the undisputed masters of the lyric voice in Roman poetry, Horace directly mentions his great predecessor, Catullus, only once, and this reference has often been taken as mocking. In fact, Horace's allusion, far from disparaging Catullus, pays him a discreet compliment by suggesting the challenge that his accomplishment presented to his successors, including Horace himself. In Poetic Interplay, the first book-length study of Catullus's influence on Horace, Michael Putnam shows that the earlier poet was probably the single most important source of inspiration for Horace's Odes, the later author's magnum opus. Except in some half-dozen poems, Catullus is not, technically, writing lyric because his favored meters do not fall into that category. Nonetheless, however disparate their preferred genres and their stylistic usage, Horace found in the poetry of Catullus, whatever its mode of presentation, a constant stimulus for his imagination. And, despite the differences between the two poets, Putnam's close readings reveal that many of Horace's poems echo Catullus verbally, thematically, or both. By illustrating how Horace often found his own voice even as he acknowledged Catullus's genius, Putnam guides us to a deeper appreciation of the earlier poet as well.
