William Lyon Phelps was born on 2nd January 1865, in New Haven, Conneticut, United States. Phelps earned a B.A. in 1887, writing his thesis on the Idealism of George Berkeley. He then gained an M.A. in 1891 from Yale and his PhD from Harvard in the same year. During his time a Yale, he offered a course in modern novels which brought the university considerable attention both nationally and internationally. Phelps published many essays on modern and European literature, including titles such as'Essays on Modern Novelists'(1910),'Some Makers of American Literature'(1923), and'As I Like it'(1923).

In 1649, a seamstress named Elizabeth Poole appeared at the Whitehall debates in London to prophesy in front of Parliament's army shortly after it had defeated the crown in the English civil wars. Invited to help deliberate the fate of Charles I, Poole advised the army to spare the king's life but to put him on trial for tyranny and to enter into a new compact with the people. After her visions proved controversial, she was defamed as a prostitute and a witch. She retaliated by printing her prophecies, along with two new defenses of her original revelations. Galt offers a robust vision of Scottish masculinity, implying that it is the solution for a multitude of English problems, ranging from the familial to the judicial and the political. As a three-volume novel, Sir Andrew Wylie provides an example of how Galt was able to bridge the difference between the earlier, shorter ‘theoretical histories'he crafted and the form of literature that was most popular at the time. English is looking back onto a long and rich history of development. Being part of the Indo-European language family, the origins of the language could be argued to date back as much as 6000 years. However, most scholars seem to agree that the'true', traceable genesis of English starts somewhere around the time of the Anglo-Saxon migration to the British Isles in in the fifth century CE. Thus, English can be understood as part of the Germanic language family tree. Today, only a relatively small part of the lexicon of English still reflects this beginning, as, over the course of many centuries, the language underwent a multitude of internally, externally and extra-linguistically motivated changes. Some followed major historical events such as the Norman Conquest in 1066 and the subsequently existing French influences or the Middle Ages and renaissance, which brought with them a great emphasis on Latin. While these mainly influenced the lexicon of English through loanwords, other developments, such as Sound Shifts (most notably the First Sound Shift, which is described by Grimm's Law that illustrates the differences between Germanic and other Indo-European languages), or the transition from Old English as an inflectional language to Middle English becoming an isolating or analytic language, had lasting influences on every major linguistic field of English.

Katherine Mansfield's complicated relationship with London began in 1903, when her parents sent her and her two older sisters from New Zealand to Queen's College in Harley Street to be educated, and where they remained until the summer of 1906. As soon as she was back in Wellington, she longed to return, her parents finally agreeing to her returning to London to forge a career as a writer, no longer ‘Kathleen Beauchamp'but ‘Katherine Mansfield'. As an adult, Mansfield had a love/hate relationship with London, but it remained central to her literary career. Mansfield became part of a literary couple with John Middleton Murry, and together they forged connections with most of the important writers in London at that time, thanks to their editorship of several little magazines and their own published work. As the symptoms of Mansfield's tuberculosis increased, and she spent more and more time away from England, seeking a healthier climate, life in London became a series of brief sojourns. It remained, however, at the heart of her literary life until her early death. This book combines a range of cutting-edge scholarship on themes including Mansfield's school life, telephony, the weather, literary sources and influences, music, and hotels, also including reviews of relevant publications in the field, a diverse range of creative writing, and the first publication of notes by Mansfield's early friend and contemporary in London, Margaret Wishart.

She published two poetic miscellanies of poems: The Copy of a Letter (1567) and A Sweet Nosegay (1573), which include her own work as well as a total of six poems by five different male authors. This edition of her writings prints modernized texts of the complete miscellanies and adds to them six poems attributed to Whitney by largely twentieth-century critics. These poems provide a rich portrait of sixteenth-century female courtship and its dangers, a unique view of class and gender in Whitney's lifetime, and a portrait of London as a burgeoning market of practical goods and luxury items from foodstuffs to imported silk.

In contrast, The Irish Revival: A Complex Vision seeks to reimagine the field by interpreting the Revival through the concept of'complexity,'a theory recently developed in the information and biological sciences. A The Spectator and Observer Book of the Year The NB column in the Times Literary Supplement, signed at the foot by J.C., occupied the back page of the paper for thirteen years. For a decade before that, it was in the middle pages. That's roughly 60,000 words a year for twenty-three years. The purpose of the initials was not to disguise the author, but to offer complete freedom to the persona. J.C. was irreverent and whimsical. The column punctured pomposity, hypocrisy and cant in the literary world – as one correspondent put it:'skewering contemporary absurdities, whether those resulting from identity politics or from academic jargon'. Readers came to expect reports from the Basement Labyrinth, where all executive decisions are made, and where annual literary prizes were judged and administered.
