This book tracks changes in the use of metadiscourse in Chinese scholars'English and Chinese research articles, discusses how these changes reflect changes in Chinese scholars'interactions with their peers in China and outside China, and analyzes how Chinese scholars are responding to changes in the academic context that embrace and shape rhetorical practices in the academic world. Around the turn of the twenty-first century, the Chinese government declared the goal of “enhancing international soft power,” and one important way to achieve this goal is to promote China's global academic influence. China has indeed made remarkable strides in terms of academic output by publishing Chinese scholars'research papers and monographs around the world. However, “international soft power” means more than just the export of papers or books; it means connecting to and participating in the academic world. For this to happen, Chinese scholars must get to know their international counterparts, understand their rhetorical preferences, and be willing (and able) to accommodate their needs.

This book focuses on abstract entity anaphora in argumentative texts with Asher's (1993) Segmented Discourse Representation Theory (SDRT) as the theoretical framework, investigating its pragmatic features and exploring its referent interpretation. The data sources include more than 160,000-word argumentative texts (80,000-word English texts and 80,000-word Chinese ones) selected from newspapers, journals, and books in China and America. At first, a comparative study was done between Chinese and English argumentative texts so as to compare the pragmatic features of abstract entity anaphora in the two languages. Then, referent interpretation is explored within the SDRT framework. Although SDRT can account for most of the instances of abstract entity anaphora, it appears incompetent in dealing with some phenomena in the data of our study. Seven problems in SDRT were found, and corresponding solutions were proposed in an attempt to improve this theory. In general, this book hasthree aspects of significance. Firstly, it establishes abstract entity anaphora as an independent and a special kind of anaphora. Secondly, the research methods are the combination of empirical study and theoretical hypotheses as well as the coalescent of dynamic study and static study. Thirdly, the book is not limited to the application of SDRT to Mandarin Chinese and backward anaphora. Instead, based on the linguistic phenomena in the data, it challenges and improves the theory, and it even negates some aspects and meanwhile brings forward new solutions.

What can baseball teach us about language, culture, and society? This book explored interpreters'role when interpreting for Chinese government press conference and discovered the role deviation of conference interpreters in Chinese–English conference interpreting, by taking corpus-based approach to analyze hedges in interpreting discourse. So far, the discovery of role deviation for conference interpreters in this book is relevantly fresh in conceptual, empirical, and methodological aspects, against the background that conference interpreters are traditionally assumed to be invisible and passive “non-person.” Arguably, this book revisited and renewed the concept of interpreters'role, offered a role theory-based theoretical framework in some potential issues in future studies, designed a novel empirical route by using hedges as the intervening points to gain insight into interpreters'role, and applied Python-a new natural language processing programming in data extraction. Thus, this book is believed to contribute some new conceptual, theoretical as well as methodological significance to the future studies on interpreters'role and performance. Applying a critical and holistic framework, International Students in Higher Education: Language, Identity, and Experience from a Holistic Perspective explores the lived experiences of four multilingual international students at a Canadian University. This volume explores how linguistic and cultural diversity in Greece, caused by various waves of emigration and immigration, has transformed Greek society and its educational system. This book is the result of intensive and continued discussions about the social role of language and its conceptualisations in societies other than Northern (European-American) ones. Language as a means of expressing as well as evoking both interiority and community has been in the focus of these discussions, led among linguists, anthropologists, and Egyptologists, and leading to a collection of essays that provide studies that transcend previously considered approaches. Its contributions are in particular interested in understanding how the attitude of the individual towards societal processes and strategies of norming is negotiated emotionally, and how individual interests and attitudes can be articulated. Discourses on public spaces are in the focus, in order to analyse those strategies that are employed to articulate dissent (for example, in the sense of face-threatening acts). This raises a number of questions on the spatial and public situatedness of emotions and language: How is the public space dealt with and reflected in language as property, heritage, and as a part of ascribed identities? Which role do emotions play in this space? How is emotion employed there as part of place making in relation to identity constructions? What is the connection between emotion, performance and emblematic spaces and places? Which opportunities of the violation of norms and transgression do such public spaces offer to actors and speakers? At the turn of the century, Germany, which defined itself as a mono-ethnic and mono-racial society, has become a country integrating various immigrant groups. Among those, there are three different types of Russian immigrants: Russian Germans, Russian Jews and ethnic Russians, all three often perceived as “Russians” by the host country. The three groups have the same linguistic background, but a different ethnicity, known as “nationality”, a separate entry in Russian official documents. This defined the immigration paths and the subsequent integration into German society, where each group strives to position itself in relation to two other groups in the same migrant space. The book discusses the complexities of belonging and (self-/other) assignment to groups as well as the attitude to language maintenance among young Russian-speaking immigrants.

This book explores the use of English within otherwise local-language conversations by two continental European social media communities. The analysis of these communities serves not only as a comparison of online language practices, but also as a close look at how globalization phenomena and ‘international English'play out in the practices of everyday life in different non-English-speaking countries. The author concludes that the root of the distinctive practices in the two communities studied is the disparity between their language ideologies. This book investigates the cultural and intercultural aspects of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). Narratives of Second Language Identity in Study Abroad brings together three important research areas by exploring the impact of study abroad on second language identities through narrative research. It outlines a new model of second language identity that incorporates a range of language and personal competencies. The three main dimensions of this model are explored in chapters that begin with students'study abroad narratives, followed by the authors'in-depth analysis. Further chapters use narratives to assess the impact of programme type and individual difference. Die der Studie zugrundeliegenden Daten stammen zum einen aus ethnographischen Beobachtungen, die über drei Jahre durchgeführt wurden; zum anderen aus Interviews mit interkulturellen Paaren, genauer mit Personen englischer Muttersprache, die mit deutschsprachigen SchweizerInnen verheiratet sind und in einer diglossen Sprachregion in der Zentralschweiz leben. Die Studie nimmt eine interdisziplinäre Perspektive ein, welche sich dem soziokulturellen linguistischen Zugang zu Identität und der sozialpsychologischen Theorie des'Positioning'bedient. Der neuartige theoretische Ansatz dieses Buches besteht aus der Rekonzeptualisierung von Identität, da die emische Perspektive der UntersuchungsteilnehmerInnen miteinbezogen wird. Diese können sich nämlich nicht von der sozial konstruierten Idee einer stabilen Identität trennen, obwohl sie zugeben, Teil gewisser soziokultureller Darstellungen zu sein. Die Analyse zeigt, wie Individuen ihre statischen und dynamischen Identitäten diskursiv konstruieren. Weiter wird die Bedeutung expliziter wie auch impliziter Identitätsansprüche individueller TeilnehmerInnen hervorgehoben und durch die Unterscheidung zweier Arten von Identität - situated und situationalidentities - illustriert. Die Ansichten der TeilnehmerInnen selbst fügt eine weitere Ebene zu jeglicher soziologischen, anthropologischen und linguistischen Analyse von Menschen in Diasporas hinzu. Während postmoderne Definitionen Identität als multivalent betrachten und die interaktionale Soziolinguistik Identität als emergent versteht, wird hier für eine Auseinandersetzung mit Identität argumentiert, welche essentialistische Vorstellungen nicht verwirft, da sich Individuen selbst mehrheitlich als gefestigte und einheitliche Persönlichkeiten verstehen. This book presents an empirical study that examines individuals'reasons for specific language practices and investigates the negotiation and performances of hybrid identities within the most intimate community of practice (CofP), the marital unit. The data stem from ethnographic observation over a three-year period as well as recorded conversations with intercultural couples, namely Anglophones married to native German-speaking Swiss, who reside in central Switzerland, where a diglossic situation prevails. This study is placed within an interdisciplinary framework that draws on the sociocultural linguistic approach to identity and the social psychological theory of positioning. The novel approach on which this book focuses is the re-conceptualization of identity by considering participants'emic perspectives since individuals cannot part with the idea of a socially constructed notion of a stable identity despite admitting to engaging in certain socio-cultural practices. The analysis shows how individuals discursively construct their static and dynamic identities. It emphasizes the importance of individuals'explicit identity claims as well as their implicit identity claims illustrating a clear distinction between two types of identities, termed situated and situational. This book argues that participants'views add another level to any sociological, anthropological and linguistic analyses of diasporic individuals. While post-modern definitions of identity are understood as multivalent and interactional sociolinguistic studies view identity as emergent, this study shows that any discussion of identity should not discard the notion of essentialism since individuals more often construct themselves and each other as stable and unitary beings within the context of social interaction.

La médiation interculturelle cherche à établir des liens de sociabilité entre des individus issus de diverses cultures, tout en prenant en compte leurs traditions et leurs identités nationales différentes. Cet ouvrage invite à une réflexion sur la diversité culturelle, sur le plurilinguisme, sur la transculturalité ainsi que sur les enjeux scientifiques, politiques, artistiques, historiques et économiques de la médiation interculturelle.
