Although these numbers do look a little like the variable number of FFT points in digital speech signal processing, they are actually something completely different: they represent the number of scientific publications per decade over the last 100 years in which articulation and prosody were jointly addressed (Google Scholar, 8th Jan 2021). Of course, the search results depend heavily on the indexing and digitization of publications as well as on the search terms and regular expressions used. Therefore, the above numbers do not claim to be complete; nor do they have to be, because even without that they already reflect an obvious fact: the links between articulation and prosody are a subject of growing interest; perhaps even of almost exponentially growing interest, if one were to take the above figures at face value. This interest is driven, among other things, by increasingly powerful measurement, analysis and recording techniques, by the discovery of syntagmatic and paradigmatic structures in prosody and the simultaneous undermining of strictly linear-segmental models in articulation, as well as the by rapid rise of speech technology and the associated increasing relevance of the emotions, speaking styles, attitudes, social hierarchies, social-role marking, etc. But, how far have we really come in understanding the links between articulation and prosody? What can we as speech scientists learn from the findings, concepts and experiences of other specialist areas, especially from the applied sciences and real practitioners? This book explores the nature of tones in Zhangzhou, an under-described Southern Min variety, based on quantitative analyses of data from 21 native speakers. It will interest students and linguists studying tone in languages of China and elsewhere in the world, in particular as an exemplar in the use of statistical methods to test and establish phonological categories in language. The study finds that realisations of Zhangzhou tones are multidimensional and that Zhangzhou has eight tones, overturning previous studies of seven tones based on the preservation of Middle Chinese tonal categories. The results presented here also suggest that the nature of Zhangzhou tones is morphological. The relationship between sandhi and citation tones is shown to be morphophonemic, while the relationship between phrase-final and citation tones is allophonic.

Informed by instrumental examinations of the laryngeal articulatory mechanism, it revises our understanding of articulatory postures to explain the actions, vibrations and resonances generated in the epilarynx and pharynx. This book combines theoretical and experimental approaches to provide a comprehensive account of glottalization in word-final syllables in Italian. The speech production study at the heart of the book sheds light on the source of glottalization, the contextual factors determining its occurrence, and the acoustic correlates which characterize its production. Acoustic analysis of words presenting evidence of glottalization is carried out through visual inspection of the acoustic signal together with spectral analysis of voice quality. Statistical analysis of the data in the study is performed using mixed effects models, as well as tree-based methods including conditional inference trees and random forests. Results of the study have implications for cross-linguistic studies on voice quality.

In recent years, speech prosody research in Brazil has grown significantly, mainly due to a series of events organized through the support of the Brazilian government. The two most important of these events are the biennial Brazilian Colloquium on Speech Prosody and School of Prosody, both of which attract a number of prominent Brazilian and international researchers.Due to the success of the 1st Brazilian Colloquium on Speech Prosody, the Luso-Brazilian Association of Speech Sciences (LBASS) was created in 2007 to support the organization of the Speech Prosody 2008 Conference, which was held in Campinas in May of that year. This international conference, organized by Dr Plínio Barbosa, Dr César Reis, and Dr Sandra Madureira, followed the success of the previous avenues of study, and brought together prosodic researchers from all over the world.The primary motivation for this book is the dearth of textbooks dealing directly with speech prosody methodology and data. As such, this volume offers a selection of the most attended prosody courses provided during the II School of Prosody at the Federal University of Espirito Santo in 2012. This book presents the first field-work based phonetic study focussing such extraordinary phonatory outcomes as occur in the context of South-Siberian throat singing. In throat singing specific voice production types serve as source, which are subject to various ways of formant shaping, merging, adjustment, and reinforcement, all of which function to enhance individual harmonics. Two main types are proposed for voice production in South-Siberian throat singing: a voice production by means of the vocal folds featuring a constriction of the aryepiglottic sphincter, and a voice production with involvement of the ventricular folds. Furthermore a simple schematic model for the articulation types in throat singing is suggested. One of the basic questions throughout this study is whether the phenomenon of throat singing shows fairly clear regional variants in different parts of southern or whether the variation is chiefly a matter of individual styles.

Phonology and Phonetics have had a tumultuous, if not always unequivocal, relationship in the past. This relationship between natural partners is now being invigorated from both sides and novel research techniques and methodologies are fostering new interdisciplinary questions. Consequently, a major issue today is whether it is necessary to draw a line between phonology and phonetics at all. This series aims to stabilize and strengthen the rapport and, by facing the big challenges, to ensure that phonetically grounded phonology and phonologically informed phonetics will have a sound future. The series is intended as a forum for the interaction of phonology and phonetics within linguistics. It welcomes joint phonological-phonetic ventures as well as initiatives from either discipline, as long as they are made with a view of the other.
