This Handbook offers a comprehensive grounding in key issues of corpus-informed translation studies, while showcasing the diverse range of topics, applications, and developments of corpus linguistics.In recent decades there has been a proliferation of scholarly activity that applies corpus linguistics in diverse ways to translation studies (TS). Applying the framework of the Prosodic Model to naturalistic data, this book presents a systematic study of the phonological structure of Shanghai Sign Language (SHSL). It examines the handshape inventory of SHSL in terms of its underlying featural specifications, phonetic realization and phonological processes such as assimilation, epenthesis, deletion, coalescence, non-dominant hand spread and weak drop. The authors define the role of the prosodic hierarchy in SHSL and analyze the linguistic functions of non-manual markers. This systematic investigation not only contributes to our understanding of SHSL itself, but also informs typological research on sign languages in the world.

Natural human communication is multimodal. We pair speech with gestures, and combine writing with pictures from online messaging to comics to advertising. This richness of human communication remains unaddressed in linguistic and cognitive theories which maintain traditional amodal assumptions about language. What is needed is a new, multimodal paradigm. This book posits a bold reorganization of the structures of language, and heralds a reconsideration of its guiding assumptions. The majority of deaf Nepalis, however, use what NSL signers call natural sign. Natural sign involves conventional and improvisatory signs, many of which recruit semiotic relations immanent in the social and material world. These features make conversation in natural sign both possible and precarious. Sense-making in natural sign depends on signers'skillful use of resources and on addressees'willingness to engage. Natural sign reveals the labor of sense-making that in more conventional language is carried by shared grammar. Ultimately, this highly original book shows that emergent language is an ethical endeavor, challenging readers to consider what it means, and what it takes, to understand and to be understood.

Reading to Learn, Reading the World showcases a range of Reading to Learn (R2L) projects from around the world in a variety of educational settings in many different languages. This pedagogy emerged over two decades from a coalescence of idealism, academic research and teachers'experience. One ideal shared by everyone involved in R2L has been to become a more effective teacher, and to help others do so. Underlying this drive to excel is the democratic ideal that education should be equally available, inclusive and effective for every student. In the first chapter David Rose recounts the origins of R2L in work with Indigenous Australian children, informed by genre writing and scaffolded reading pedagogies. Three following chapters celebrate the impact of the methodology in settings of educational disadvantage in Australian schools. Further chapters describe the efficacy of the methodology around the world in a variety of languages, often in very challenging educational settings. Stories from Africa detail the successes of R2L pedagogy in South Africa, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. In Europe, a ground-breaking project to adapt the methodology for the education of deaf and hearing-impaired students working in Swedish Sign Language is described. Also in Sweden, a long-term project to train teachers working in disadvantaged schools grew out of the success of the EU-funded project, Teacher Learning for European Literacy Education (TeL4ELE). Following chapters describe how the TeL4ELE project unfolded and spread R2L to Portuguese and Spanish schools and teacher education. Chapters from the Americas provide stories of success from a US community education project with Spanish-speaking mothers learning English, a tertiary setting in Colombia where the methodology has been used as a cross-faculty initiative, and a literacy outreach program from a university in Argentina for teachers from disadvantaged local schools. The final chapters include an evaluation of the R2L methodology in comparison with other literacy methods used in Argentina, an analysis of the R2L methodology for teaching mathematics in Chile, and a project to teach scientific literacy with Indonesian school students, in Indonesian and English.

It is hardly an overstatement to say that Soviet linguists had a monopoly over Tajik linguistics before the dissolution of the Soviet Union, when most studies on the language were accessible exclusively through Russian and Tajik. Today, however, linguists dealing with Tajik are diverse not only in terms of their location but also in terms of their disciplinary orientation within linguistics, making it difficult for the general linguist to work out the state of the art of the linguistic study of Tajik. This book focuses on the role size plays in grammar. Under the umbrella term size fall the size of syntactic projections, the size of feature content, and the size of reference sets. This Volume II discusses size effects in movement, agreement, and interpretation while the contributions in Volume I focus on size and structure building. Part I of Volume II investigates how size interacts with head movement and various phrasal movement including left branch extraction, object shift, tough movement, and multiple wh movement. Part II of this volume discusses the role size plays in agreement and morphology-related matters like allomorphy. Contributions in Part III focus on semantic-oriented issues, in particular the size of reference domains and NPI licensing. Person and number are two basic grammatical categories. However, they have not yet been exhaustively documented in many sign languages. This volume presents a thorough description of the form and interpretation of person and number in Catalan Sign Language (LSC) personal pronouns. This is the first book exploring together the two categories (and their interaction) in a sign language.Building on a combination of elicitation methods and corpus data analysis, this book shows that person and number are encoded through a set of distinctive phonological features: person is formally marked through spatial features, and number by the path specifications of the sign. Additionally, this study provides evidence that the same number marker might have a different semantic import depending on the person features with which it is combined.Results of this investigation contribute fresh data to cross-linguistic studies on person and number, which are largely based on evidence from spoken language only. Furthermore, while this research identifies a number of significant differences with respect to prior descriptions of person and number in other sign languages, it also demonstrates that, from a typological standpoint, the array of distinctions that LSC draws within each category is not exceptional.

The book examines the category Number from a variety of linguistic perspectives. Typological aspects of co-plurals and singulatives are introduced and number marking is analysed for three individual languages: Kamas (Samoyedic), Welsh (Celtic) and Wagi (Beria, Saharan). For each language, the focus lies on a different aspect of number marking: In the Wagi dialect of Beria, different tonal patterns are discovered. The extinct Kamas language is analysed in terms of language contact with Russian. Number categories can also serve as a measure of loanword integration, as the study about spoken Welsh shows.
