Cohesion in English is concerned with a relatively neglected part of the linguistic system: its resources for text construction, the range of meanings that are speciffically associated with relating what is being spoken or written to its semantic environment. A principal component of these resources is'cohesion'. This book studies the cohesion that arises from semantic relations between sentences. Reference from one to the other, repetition of word meanings, the conjunctive force of but, so, then and the like are considered. Further, it describes a method for analysing and coding sentences, which is applied to specimen texts.

This volume contains selected papers from the Eight World Congress of Applied Linguistics held in Sydney in 1987. Volume I starts off with an overview of the field by G. Richard Tucker in which he identifies two areas: innovative language education and language education policy. The overal focus of the papers to follow focus on the individual language learner, how that individual, in given contexts or in interaction with specific others, develops a command of a first language, of two or more first languages, or of a second language, in home and in classroom settings. At the same time, cutting across these variables, there is a gradual shifting of attention from investigations of the language learning process to proposals for language teaching curricula and syllabuses.

The subject of this book is how human beings construe their experience of the world. The construction of experience is usually thought of as knowledge, represented in the form of conceptual taxonomies, schemata, scripts and the like. The authors offer an interpretation that is complementary to this, treating experience not as knowing but as meaning; and hence as something that is construed in language. In other words, the concern is with the construal of human experience as a semantic system; and since language plays the central role not only in storing and exchanging experience but also in construing it, language is taken as the interpretative base.The focus of the book is both theoretical and descriptive. The authors consider it important that theory and description should develop in parallel, with constant interchange between the two. The major descriptive component is an account of the most general features of the ideational semantics of English, which is then exemplified in two familiar text types (recipes and weather forecasts).
