As cognitive scientists continue to probe into the nature of the human mind, it is increasingly clear that research into cognition cannot be dissociated from the context in which our mental activity occurs. The papers collected in this book testify to the growing interest in adopting a broad characterisation of what counts as relevant context. The vices of seeking essences behind complex phenomena should not go unnoticed, the primary, and possibly the most crucial, downside of this approach being a reductionist treatment of the human mind. With this book, the authors want to show that humans are not merely brains, minds, speakers, learners, readers, etc., but, first and foremost, complex beings who communicate within and beyond the contexts of their own cultures.

In this volume, questions at the intersection of mental representations and their verbal and non-verbal means of expression are discussed, using embodiment theory as a basis. Focus is placed on establishing interdisciplinary relationships between linguistics, philosophy, psychology, anthropology, cultural studies, literary studies and translation studies. The theoretical reflections are studied in a vast catalogue of different culture-specific phenomena from the world's most diverse European, Asian, African and Ancient American cultures. The book is divided into three parts: 1. The Relation of Body, Mind and Language, 2. Culture-Specific Concepts and their Linguistic and Ideographic Expression, and 3. Embodiment, Disembodiment, Intercorporeality and Physical Expression.

Politicamente corretto, linguaggio inclusivo,'lingua facile', sessismo linguistico, hate speech: nella maggior parte dei casi di discriminazione un ruolo determinante spetta (anche) al linguaggio. Pur non limitandosi a fatti linguistici, la discriminazione viene spesso trasmessa attraverso la lingua, per mezzo di espressioni volutamente spregiative, ma anche nascosta in usi idiomatici apparentemente innocui. D'altro canto però proprio la lingua può servire a combattere le discriminazioni, p.e. ricorrendo a un linguaggio inclusivo che non perpetri stereotipi di genere, oppure semplificando testi istituzionali per renderli accessibili alle persone con disabilità intellettive. Questo volume analizza da un punto di vista diacronico e sincronico alcune espressioni e locuzioni discriminatorie sulla base di materiali eterogenei (dizionari, raccolte di proverbi, trattati e testi letterari, articoli di giornale, social network, canzoni) e secondo diversi approcci metodologici. Il focus è sull'italiano, con excursus su francese, inglese e tedesco.

El segundo volumen de Enotradulengua recoge los trabajos de varios integrantes del GIRTraduvino y colaboraciones internacionales en torno a los géneros y tipos textuales que se dan en el ámbito vitivinícola. A lo largo de 12 capítulos, se desgranan aspectos lingüísticos y extralingüísticos para caracterizar una amplia variedad de textos, desde la nota de cata – paradigma de género vitivinícola – hasta los tratados, pasando por géneros a caballo entre dos esferas de actividad, como son las guías y los folletos enoturísticos, y géneros emergentes, como la conversación guasap en la negociación comercial, sin olvidar el mundo de la publicidad.

Esta monografía colectiva profundiza en las fórmulas de saludo y de despedida en diferentes lenguas románicas. Los dieciséis capítulos que constituyen el libro ofrecen novedosas aportaciones sobre el funcionamiento de estas unidades discursivas –en principio, rutinarias– en latín, español, friulano, francés, italiano y rumano desde varios puntos de vista: sincrónico, diacrónico, diatópico, diafásico y diastrático. Asimismo, se tiene en cuenta su aplicación a la enseñanza y al aprendizaje de las citadas lenguas romances como idiomas extranjeros.

Die enge Verbindung zwischen Sprache und Kultur ist eine Grundidee der kulturwissenschaftlich-interkulturellen Linguistik sowie der Fremdsprachendidaktik. Ausgehend von kommunikationstheoretischen Ansätzen untersucht die Autorin, wie genau sich die Brennpunkte dieser Verflechtung ausgestalten. Darauf basierend erfasst sie systematisch die Voraussetzungen für erfolgreiche, sozial erfolgreiche und selbstbestimmte Kommunikation – auch unter Bedingungen der Fremd- und Mehrsprachigkeit. Die entwickelte interkulturell orientierte Theorie der Kommunikation bildet schließlich die Grundlage für den anwendungsbezogenen Teil der Studie. Dieser zeigt klare Perspektiven für die Sprach- und Kulturvermittlung auf.

Migrationen verändern bestehende Sprach- und Kulturräume. Nur mithilfe genauerer migrationswissenschaftlicher Kenntnisse der Bedingungen des individuellen und sozialen Sprachgebrauchs können kleinere Sprachgemeinschaften von Migranten gegenüber konkurrierenden Nationalsprachen geschützt werden. This book aims to expose a panchronic outlook on motivation behind the word within the paradigm of cognitive linguistics. On the example of girl and woman used in'Dubliners', the author emphasises the impact of culture on human conceptualisation which, in turn, can be traced in language. The results of her analysis reveal that the linguistic sign is not an arbitrary pairing of form and meaning, but rather a language unit motivated by culture. This book provides a comprehensive view of intercultural specifics resulting from the translation and reception process of precedent phenomena (precedent names, texts, statements, situations) in different linguistic and socio-cultural spaces – Russian, Slovak and German. The author analyses language and translation itself as a phenomenon of culture in form of interdisciplinary research and thus links translation studies with philosophy, literary science, culture, and intercultural psychology. His comparative research provides a detailed analysis of precedent phenomena in the work Moscow to the End of the Line by V. Erofeev (Russian-Slovak-German comparative aspect). His conclusions and commentaries enrich the sphere of translation and reception of intercultural units.

This book consists of scientific chapters devoted to innovative approaches to examination of anthropocentrism. It depicts human beings as physical, spiritual, social and cultural creatures perceived through the lingual and literary lens. The publication has an intercultural foundation, as it examines Slovak, Russian, German, English and Romanian languages. The authors of the book discuss issues which transcend the boundaries of philological research. They apply knowledge from various fields, such as psychology, communication theory, aesthetics, mass media and other social sciences in order to obtain relevant scientific results. The authors present critical analyses and interpretations of contemporary theoretical and practical problems occurring in the selected areas of expertise, and outline the perspective research possibilities.

Das Buch präsentiert Ergebnisse der Forschungsarbeit aus vielen Bereichen der germanistischen Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaft. Ein gemeinsamer Nenner ist die Verwendung der deutschen Sprache in Kommunikation, im DaF-Unterricht, in Erinnerungskultur mit ihren semantischen Phänomenen, sowie unter pragmatischem Aspekt. Erörtert werden Fragestellungen zu parlamentarischen Zwischenrufen, Funktionsverbgefügen in den Online-Zeitungen, der DDR-Geschichte und ihrer Rezeption, zur Höflichkeit unter den Studenten von heute, zu Phrasemen im modernen Fremdsprachenunterricht, semantischen Relationen in Komposita anhand von deutscher Küche bis hin zu bevor- und ehe-Subjunktoren sowie Zeitverlaufsstrukturen.

Die im Buch versammelten Beiträge stellen Ergebnisse eines internationalen Symposiums zu sprachlichen und kulturellen Identitäten der Slavia im Wandel der Zeit dar und setzen sich vornehmlich anhand zahlreicher Beispiele aus der Geschichte und Gegenwart mit der Rolle slawischer Minderheiten in der Staatenlandschaft Europas auseinander. Neben theoretischen und methodologischen Fragestellungen werden insbesondere auch philologische und kulturwissenschaftliche Probleme erörtert.

Speech practices as discursive practices for meaning-making across domains, genres, and social groups is an under-researched, highly complex field of sociolinguistics. This field has gained momentum after innovative studies of adolescents and young adults with mixed ethnic and language backgrounds revealed that they «cross» language and dialectal or vernacular borders to construct their own hybrid discursive identities. The focus in this volume is on the diversity of emerging hybridizing speech practices through contact with English, predominantly in Europe. Contributions to this collected volume originate from the DFG funded conference on language contact in times of globalization (LCTG4) and from members of the editor's funded research group «Discursive Multilingualism».

Este trabalho discute língua, cultura e sociedade. Interessa à sociolinguística, mas também a outros campos do saber nas ciências sociais. A composição multiétnica da população brasileira é profundamente marcada por traços culturais de diversos povos, entre os quais o italiano. A imigração italiana deixou marcas culturais importantes em seus descendentes, tornando-os sujeitos transculturais. O aporte teórico se fundamenta em estudos de Contato de Línguas, Redes Sociais, Comunidades de Prática, Identidade, «Belonging» e Transculturalidade. A metodologia utilizada constitui-se de aplicação de entrevistas semiestruturadas a descendentes de italianos analisadas sob a perspectiva da Ecolinguística. O ecossistema cultural desses indivíduos revela a manifestação da etnicidade em movimento.

This book illustrates the problems connected with the body and the sign: the real body and the body of the text, somaticism and semiology (both as a general sign theory and in the medical sense as «symptomatology»). The author seeks to derive a more general principle from these two words, referring to the representation of experience in different literary texts. If we are talking about the representation of experience, we cannot, by any means, ignore the body that becomes the essential point of reference for human experience. This general principle aims at creating a matter of concept, a somatic criticism project, which is closely related to the issue of rhythm in literary texts - a rhythm understood as an intermediary between the body and the sense of the text.

This monograph aims to stimulate thinking and increase consciousness about the cultural dimension of foreign language teaching.　The author draws from the theoretical framework of Schmidt's «ABCs of Cultural Understanding and Communication» (Schmidt, 1998; Schmidt & Finkbeiner, 2006) to support and advocate for expanding awareness in relation to the influence of culture on the perception of self and other. She interrogates how language learners acquire interpretative skills to gain a deeper reflexive understanding of different cultures and how electronic communication can be effectively utilised in teaching for intercultural learning. Learning how to interrogate diverse cultural practices using multiple cultural frameworks has been shown to facilitate authentic engagement with the complexities of diverse pluralistic societies. This qualitative research study explores how culture can be taught in the foreign language classroom and school setting.

El objetivo del estudio es doble: por una parte, analizar el origen de las fórmulas honorificas con el sufijo superlativo –ísimo y, por otra, con ayuda de un corpus amplio, compuesto mayoritariamente por textos latinos (siglos V-IX) y españoles (siglos XV-XIX), estudiar cómo llegaron a lexicalizarse. Los resultados de la investigación ofrecen novedosas aportaciones sobre aspectos pragmáticos, semánticos y léxicos de la deixis social.
