The aim of this book is to provide a comparative analysis of intra- and inter- linguistic features, setting a benchmark for future typological studies. It contrasts cognitive and functional aspects of causative, agent-deprofiling, and resultative constructions in two typologically distant languages: English and Urdu. The detailed nature of the contrastive analysis opens doors for future research on the complexities of each construction and, by extension, of both languages. The study is framed within the field of cognitively-oriented constructionist approaches to language, specifically within the Lexical Constructional Model (LCM), proposed by Ruiz de Mendoza and Mairal. With its cross-linguistic dimension, it develops central aspects of this model at the argument-structure level and provides evidence of the role of high-level metaphor and metonymy in the motivating grammatical phenomena.

Over the past 25 years, previously separate fields of linguistic research have moved closer together, resulting in constructive collaborations: Cognitive Sociolinguistics draws on the framework of Cognitive Linguistics to investigate social factors in linguistic variation. Linguistic Landscape studies merge Semiotics and Sociolinguistics. Critical Discourse Studies link ideological dimensions of language to general conceptual principles. Language pedagogy is constantly informed by developments in Applied Linguistics. Furthermore, there is lively communication with neighbouring disciplines such as Literary and Cultural Studies. The present volume reflects this fruitful fluidity. It is a tribute to the linguist Martin Pütz, whose work has always been guided by this interdisciplinary spirit.

This book is a collection of papers pertaining to some of the current problems of language description couched in terms of recent advances of the theory of Cognitive Linguistics. The analyses conducted by the authors examine the interrelation between culture, discourse, grammar and cognition, with a particular focus placed on the nature and role of formulaic language.

'The Gravitational Pull Hypothesis is an attempt to provide a cognitive account for features of translated language. It assumes that translated and non-translated texts in the same language exhibit distributional differences that can be regarded as translational effects. This book presents a number of studies aiming to test that hypothesis on five linguistic items: passive construal of events, diminution, verbal aspect, light verb constructions and adjective position. The studies draw on data from the COVALT corpus as well as elicitation and translation tasks performed by professional translators. The results shed light not only on the hypothesis itself but also on the mixed-methods approach adopted in the book'--

Langue et connaissances sont dans la recherche actuelle travaillées sous l'angle du discours. Son étude linguistique permet d'identifier des figements en tant qu'expressions de routines sociales et cognitives. Cette approche exploite deux outils : les constructions en tant qu'appariements de sens et de forme, et les frames en tant qu'unités minimales de connaissances partagées. Il convient alors de construire théoriquement cette association, encore inédite en analyse du discours. Un protocole méthodologique de linguistique du corpus opérationnalise l'approche développée. Puis, une analyse empirique d'un corpus de publicités du vin issues de prospectus de supermarchés autrichiens permet de valider l'intérêt du travail.

This book is a collection of chapters pertaining to some of the current problems of language description couched in terms of recent advances of the theory of Cognitive Linguistics. The analyses conducted by the authors revolve around issues belonging to the scope of, among others, discourse analysis, figurative language use, metaphorisation and metonymisation processes, as well as various approaches to grammatical constructions.

This study focuses on the concepts of similarities and differences considered within the framework of cognitive linguistics and its understanding of mental construal as our ability to form alternate conceptualisations. The author employs selected cognitive models in the analysis of a variety of verbal, visual, and verbo-visual texts from the domains of literature, art, the press, as well as internet communication. With a focus on the practical dimension, the author suggests that comparing theme-related texts, alternative conceptualisations, and variations might be used as a strategy in teaching cognitive linguistics.

Dieses Buch liefert eine neue Erkenntnisperspektive zur Deutung und Untersuchung der Fachlexik. Grundlage dafür stellen die anthropozentrische Linguistik und der epistemologische Ansatz zur Semantik dar. Aus dieser Perspektive zeigt der Autor, wie Fachlexeme entstehen und was ihnen an Prinzipien, Motiven oder Prioritäten zugrunde gelegt wird, wenn darüber entschieden wird, ein bestimmtes Fachlexem zu konstruieren und dieses als Fachneologismus durchzusetzen. Die Untersuchung stützt sich dabei auf eine empirische Studie zu Fachneologismen aus dem Fachgebiet «Byzantinische Hymnographie und Musik».

Für die Übersetzung von Rechtstexten ist der Vergleich der Rechtssysteme unabdingbar. Das Buch erläutert und vergleicht die übersetzungsrelevanten Aspekte des deutschen und polnischen Verwaltungsverfahrensrechts sowie der Rechtslehre beider Staaten. Den theoretischen Rahmen bildet dabei die Anthropozentrische Translatorik. Die Autorin untersucht mit Hilfe der Eyetracking-Analyse die kognitiven Prozesse während des Übersetzens. Sie rekonstruiert mit der Blickbewegungsmessung die kognitiven Prozesse der Versuchspersonen während des Übersetzens.

This book offers a cognitive-semiotic approach to metaphoricity of visual representations in static visual narratives referred to as comics. It implements this approach in an exploration of conventionalized visual signs depicting diegetic situations, motion events, sound events, and diverse psychological experiences in such narratives. With his focus on the intersection of comics studies, conceptual metaphor theory, and Charles Sanders Peirce's theory of signs, the author analyzes a broad array of attested data retrieved from comics exemplifying various publication formats, generic conventions, and cultural traditions. His exploration situates the metaphoricity of the analyzed visual signs against the backdrop of their overall semiotic makeup and in relation to the metaphoricity of their linguistic counterparts.

Fachsprache definiert sich als Sprachvarietät: Sie divergiert systematisch von anderen markierten Sprachstilen sowie von dem unmarkierten Neutralstil. Vor diesem Hintergrund ermittelt der Autor die fachsprachlichen Markierungen durch einen innersprachlichen Vergleich. Er arbeitet als Subsystem vier textsyntaktische Umstrukturierungen heraus. Mit dieser Analyse werden das fachsprachliche Outfit und seine Wirkung systematisch erklär-, plan- sowie machbar und fachsprachliches Redigieren, Textoptimierung und auch Fachübersetzung werden lehrbar. Zusätzlich zu den vier Umstrukturierungen ist Fachsprache konstituiert durch zwei spezifische Nominationstechniken. Dies sind die Ergebnisse der zahlreichen Textanalysen und kognitiven Unterrichtsmodelle, die hier vorgelegt werden.

The book offers an interdisciplinary discussion of the cognitive-semiotic interface between language, literature, and the arts, with a special focus on creativity and imagination. It brings together international contributors suggesting a wide range of innovative perspectives on the correlation between verbal discourse and creative artefacts. The book reveals the specificity of such phenomena as parallax, transparency, corporeal imagination, and multimodality. Alongside interpreting artistic texts, the contributors search for cognitive and semiotic manifestations of creativity in political and everyday discourse.

Cognitive linguistics provides tools to discuss identity as a process. Identity depends on the underlying conceptualisation of the present, while innovation and creation are borderline phenomena in epistemology. The two may be seen as generalised accounts of causation as a process: open-ended and closed, where time is conceptualised as real or figurative. Aristotle's epistemology builds on the conceptualisation of a subject manipulating objects in the visual field. Saint Augustine and Plotinus conceive of time and identity as real and contingent or figurative and necessary. William of Ockham builds on a simple conceptualisation of a time-point matrix as opposed to a duration matrix. British National Corpus findings relate to and comment on these expert philosophical conversations through the medium of cognitive models of «innovation» and «creation», instruments of thought and reason in English.

Again firmly rooted in Leonard Talmy's Cognitive Semantics, this new study moves beyond the analysis of single schematic systems in language contributing to the linguistic task of conceptual integration. It investigates for the first time effects of linking up Force Dynamics, a conceptual category generalizing over the traditional notion of the causative, and the Attention system of language, as detailed in Talmy's most recent extended draft version. To accommodate the conceptual and formal complexities involved at the interface of Attention, Force Dynamics, and Cognitive State and to allow for an appropriate degree of fine-grainedness the analytical framework affords, the exposition has been constrained to the golf scenario, where forces are at work in the physical and sociodynamic domains.
