The book offers a comprehensive overview of current research in Slavic linguistics from a theoretical and experimental perspective and from a variety of languages. The selected papers from the 11th European Conference on Formal Description of Slavic Languages (FDSL 11) that took place at the University of Potsdam in 2015, illustrate the advancement of Slavic linguistic studies and their outreach for the development of general linguistics. The guest paper by Noam Chomsky at the beginning of the book sets a clear sign in this direction and may be taken as an acknowledgement of the field.

Methods in Dialectology is a venerable institution, having started in 1972 in London, Western Ontario, Canada. This book is a collection of papers presented at Methods XVI in Tachikawa, Japan, in 2017. It was the first time Methods took place in Asia. In this volume, the emphasis is on diverse methods and diverse research questions. Many of the papers focus on language innovation, language change, corpus studies and linguistic atlas from different perspectives. At the same time, methodological innovation is very much in focus. Its emphasis meant that several papers showcased cutting-edge quantitative techniques that allow dialectologists to address questions that had been thought impossible to answer only a few years ago.

This volume is a selection of papers presented at the 10th International Conference on Middle English held at the University of Stavanger, Norway from 31 May to 2 June 2017. The collection bridges the gap between traditional ‘linguistic'and ‘literary'topics and provides a holistic view of current research within Middle English studies. The papers are organized under four main headings: The transmission of Middle English texts, Syntax and morphology, Genre and discourse and Textual afterlives. This book is a selection of papers presented at the 11th International Conference on Middle English (ICOME11), held at the University of Florence, Italy from 5 to 8 February 2019. The papers, organised under three headings “Textual Interlacing,” “Borrowing and the Lexicon,” and “Language at Different Levels,” interface different fields of linguistics, literature and philology in the context of Medieval England and offer a holistic view of current research within Middle English studies. The papers compiled in the present volume reflect the key theme of the most recent Duo Colloquium sessions – contextuality. The psychological notion of context has been central to translation research for decades, and it has evolved along with the development of translational thought, translation types and tools. The theme of contextuality can be understood at any level, from the geopolitical to the textual, and embraced by both academic and professional considerations of translational and interpreting phenomena. It is centred on context, contexts and/or decontextualisation in translation and interpreting theory and practice from a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives. This volume is a selection of papers read at the fourth international conference of the Society of Historical English Language and Linguistics (SHELL) held at Keio University, Tokyo, in 2012. The first conference was at Chiba University (Japan) back in 2005, the second at Nagoya University (Japan) in 2007, the third at Hiroshima University (Japan) in 2009. The volume consists of four plenary papers in part one, of six papers read in two symposia in part two, and individual papers on Old, Middle, Modern, American English with some diachronic studies in part three. Papers discuss syntax, lexicology, semantics, paleography, literary criticism, etc., in various historical periods of English, on the basis of both theoretical and philological studies, as the Society has aimed at the reunion of these approaches from its establishment.

This volume collects selected papers written by young translation scholars who were CETRA 2014 participants. This book analyses the heterogeneity of translational norms, diversity of cultures and the challenges of intercultural transfer. The authors analyze a wide array of source texts, from the translations of contemporary prose and audiovisual products into Brazilian, Japanese and Swedish, to renderings of texts more distant in time, such as the Bible and «Golestân» written in medieval Persian. The book also concentrates on selected meta-level issues, such as the integrity of the discipline and its language, as well as the development of translation competence. The norm-focused and culture-related framework offers considerable research potential for Translation Studies.

The topic of the book is the relationship between mind and language on all levels of linguistic research. Over the past decade, the cognitive approach to language and its methodology have started to permeate other areas of linguistic study, which, in turn, is opening up room for new types of research and resulting in new knowledge that contributes to explaining not only the linguistic phenomena, but also how they function in a linguistic community and contemporary society. The book tries to reflect these new developments. It consists of 11 chapters organized into three thematic sections: language and mind from linguistic perspective, the language and mind of the translator, and language and mind from the teacher's perspective.

This publication is dedicated to the memory of Associate Professor Pavlos Pavlou, a distinguished language testing and assessment researcher, ELT practitioner, sociolinguist and esteemed faculty member at the University of Cyprus. This volume of papers from the 14th International Conference on Methods in Dialectology, held at the University of Western Ontario (Canada), 2 to 6 August 2011, brings together recent methodological innovations and current research on the study of dialects and language variation. The research contributions are authored by a range of new and established scholars from different countries working on a number of languages and language varieties. The volume is divided into sections dealing with phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax, ethnicity and identity, dialect cartography, methods, techniques as well as variation and change.

The notion of communicative space forms the general theoretical leitmotif of this volume. Within communicative spaces of all kinds, the contributors present their views and research on language variation, language contact and language change. This volume of papers from the 13th International Conference on Methods in Dialectology, held at the University of Leeds in 2008, collects together current research and recent methodological developments in the study of dialects by new and established scholars. It is organised into themed sections reporting on historical dialectology, dialect literature, the production of dialect maps and atlases, and the collection and organisation of material for dialect dictionaries and corpora. Perceptual dialectology and dialect intelligibility are also featured, and there are linguistic analyses of dialectal data from many language varieties.

This book comprises a compilation of papers authored by researchers who took part in the 5th International Conference on Economic, Business, Financial, and Institutional Translation held at the University of Alicante in 2023. The Philosophical Transactions and the letters preserved in the Royal Society's archives provide precious insights into the making of science and the workings of the Republic of Letters in the early and late modern periods. This book investigates the Royal Society's relations with Italy through a socio-historical and critical linguistic analysis of the papers concerning Italian research published in the Transactions and of the epistolary exchanges between the Society's Fellows and Italian scholars. The aim, from the linguistic perspective, is to describe the features and development of papers based on Italian research published in the journal, as well as the discursive aspects that characterise the exchanges between the two countries. Ultimately, from the historical and cultural point of view, the study will provide a picture of the development of Anglo-Italian relations in scientific context from the seventeenth to the end of the nineteenth century.

As digital humanities in recent years have been taking roots in major international research centers, this edited volume consisting of ten papers including the introduction seeks to examine the current state of the digital/data-driven research in history and neighboring disciplines dealing with Southeast Europe as well as with the Ottoman Empire and to give an interdisciplinary impetus by bringing together international scholars working with various digital approaches. The included papers give a broad introduction into the field and follow various methods of digital analysis and visualization incorporating approaches like corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis,GIS (Geographic Information Systems), agent-based modelling, computationalstatistics etc.

The effects of language are numerous. Some are known and have been described, other effects are intuitive and are still waiting to be understood, explained and predicted, while – possibly – there might be more effects that we are still unaware of. The book brings together 16 contributions organized into two main sections: The first one relates to the issue of the effects of language in the FL classroom. The second one can, broadly speaking, be subsumed under the heading of sociolinguistics, given that it brings together a number of papers exploring the effects of language on society and/or on the individual. The answers to the questions have been provided by linguists – theoreticians and practitioners - from multiple perspectives. Thus, the conclusions and invitations for further research put forth in the papers collected in this book, should be of use to anyone with an interest in the effects of language, from cognitive scientists to FL teachers.

This volume comprises 17 papers that are dealing with European pluricentric languages where there are some issues of contact and conflict. An overview about all European languages and of those that are pluricentric is also provided. Central topics are human rights for non-dominant varieties, and conflicts in pluricentric languages on the Iberian peninsula and on the British Isles. Several papers also deal with languages from a different point of view, with languages where the status of pluricentricity is disputed (Albanian, Post-Yougoslav-languages). For the first time the pluricentricity of Finno-Ugric languages is dealt with alongside papers about the pluricentricity of Russian. This is the seventh volume that is published by the'International Working Group on non-dominant varieties of pluricentric languages'.

This volume is a collection of papers read at the International Medieval Congress at Leeds in 2017, in two sessions organized by the Institute of English Studies at the University of London and four sessions organized by the Society of Historical English Language and Linguistics. Contributions consist of poetry, prose, interlinear glosses, syntax, semantics, lexicology, and medievalism. The contributors employ a wealth of different approaches. The general theme of the IMC 2017 was ‘otherness', and some papers fit this theme very well. Even when two researchers deal with a similar topic and arrive at different conclusions, the editors do not try to harmonize them but present them as they are for further discussion.

This volume contains a collection of papers that deal with Romance linguistics from two broad perspectives: multilingualism and language acquisition. This volume presents a selection of papers from the «3rd International Conference on Non-Dominant Varieties of Pluricentric Languages» that was held in 2014 at the University of Surrey, Guildford (UK). The papers in section one deal with the theoretical aspects of pluricentricity and methods of description of the variations in pluricentric languages. Section two contains a number of papers about «new» pluricentric languages and «new» non-dominant varieties that have not been described before. Section three showcases pluricentric languages that are used alongside indigenous languages and section four deals with the pluricentricity of special languages.

The fifth volume in the series Language Competence and Language Awareness in Europe unites a collection of peer-reviewed papers delivered at the Third Conference on Language Contact in Times of Globalization (LCTG3) at the University of Greifswald in 2011. The papers are arranged in five thematic sections: Part I studies lexical and grammatical borrowing and pseudo-loans. Part II looks at code-switching and language intertwining in different contexts, while Part III is concerned with the power, political backup and use of different languages in multilingual settings. This collective volume deals with the language of adventure tourism from different approaches, such as linguistics, semantics, and pragmatics. The papers selected delve into different languages (Spanish, English, and Italian), either with a monolingual or a bilingual approach. They revolve around several parts of speech (e.g., verbs, adjectives), distinct phraseological units (e.g., collocations, compounds), and other aspects (e.g., accessibility, natural language processing) by relying on a corpus-based or corpus-driven methodology. Given the complete analysis of the main features of this language, this volume enhances the understanding of current terminology and also offers techniques that can be replicated in the study of other areas of knowledge.

This book contains an original collection of contributions that deal with the use of a methodology based on, driven, or assisted by corpora to analyse language from a gender perspective. Specialist software is also used to answer the research questions addressed in every chapter. The papers selected examine English or Spanish texts and focus on the employment of gender-related words in several types of discourse (e.g., adventure tourism promotion, the Humanities, literature, legal texts, or social media). The authors cover these topics from different approaches to identify new features on how language use portrays the female and the male genders. The aim of this book is to provide a comparative analysis of intra- and inter- linguistic features, setting a benchmark for future typological studies. It contrasts cognitive and functional aspects of causative, agent-deprofiling, and resultative constructions in two typologically distant languages: English and Urdu. The detailed nature of the contrastive analysis opens doors for future research on the complexities of each construction and, by extension, of both languages. The study is framed within the field of cognitively-oriented constructionist approaches to language, specifically within the Lexical Constructional Model (LCM), proposed by Ruiz de Mendoza and Mairal. With its cross-linguistic dimension, it develops central aspects of this model at the argument-structure level and provides evidence of the role of high-level metaphor and metonymy in the motivating grammatical phenomena.

This volume is a collection of papers presented at the 60th International Academic Week organized by the Southeast Europe Association in October 2022. The event brought together scholars to discuss the various facets of international return migration from diverse destination countries back to Southeast Europe. Within this volume, the concept of return takes on a dynamic and multifaceted character. It is seen not as a one-way journey but as an ongoing, non-linear, and reversible process consisting of multiple stages. Language pedagogy is constantly informed by developments in Applied Linguistics. Furthermore, there is lively communication with neighbouring disciplines such as Literary and Cultural Studies. The present volume reflects this fruitful fluidity. It is a tribute to the linguist Martin Pütz, whose work has always been guided by this interdisciplinary spirit.

This volume expands the discussion on the language management (LM) framework through two themes: interests and power, which are driving forces of the LM process, observable and describable at every step. It consists of thirteen contributions analyzing diverse situations in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Authors focus on a range of topics, including the role of language ideologies in various types of institutions, such as higher education institutions and language cultivation centers, the struggle to maintain minority languages, the positions of the actors involved in the process of making policies concerning foreign language teaching, or the processes that learning and choosing to use foreign languages entail. Emergent insights into the commonalities in the ways in which interests and power guide or underlie the management of language, communication, and sociocultural problems contribute significantly to the strength of LM as a sociolinguistic framework.

The Festschrift volume consists of 42 contributions by 55 authors from 13 countries. The papers, written in Catalan, English, French, Russian and Spanish, treat data from these and some other languages (Arabic, BCS [Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian], Czech, Finnish, Hebrew, Korean, Upper Kuskokwim Athabaskan [Alaska], Shughni [Pamir]). Linguistic Landscape studies examine language(s) in public spaces. This study focuses on the interplay of language, space and sociocultural context: Yaoundé's Linguistic Landscape is examined with respect to its multilingual and multimodal nature. Next to a sociolinguistic framework, a (socio)cognitive analysis is also put centre stage.

This book presents the first large-scale investigation of the structure and functions of linguistic impoliteness and impoliteness metalanguage in contemporary British children's fiction. The study ties together findings from pragmatics, language acquisition research, literary studies, and translation studies with novel data-driven insights. The study shows that children's fiction prefers direct, unmitigated impoliteness tokens to highlight key aspects of plot and characterisation. Impoliteness metalanguage is used to clarify impoliteness events to the child. The study provides a framework for the investigation of impoliteness in translation, which gives evidence of pragmatic differences, as well as differing views of children's cognitive abilities in two linguacultures.

This book contains a selection of papers on issues of current interest in syntax and morpho-syntax. Most topics pertain to the question of the relation between word order and syntactic structure. The discussion starts with a proposal of extending the theory of relativization to reason clauses. It continues with the analysis of the realization of focus in Basque and the discussion of current views on the syntax of cleft constructions. Next, an inquiry into the rigidity of sentence left-periphery is offered in a cross-linguistic perspective. The two final contributions discuss feature-free derivations in syntax applied to a single morpho-syntactic problem, and the question of gradient acceptability of Polish sentences featuring possessive items in the context of the competition between their reflexive and pronominal forms.

What is identity and how do we construct identity? Why do we have to deconstruct identities again? And what is the role that language policy measures and anti-discriminatory actions play in this process? This volume deals with the topic of identity formation in the Slavic region. It opens with an extensive general introduction to the topic of identity. In its core part, measures meant to enable politically correct speech and anti-discriminatory language are presented for different Slavic languages and cultural spheres. Political correctness, antidiscrimination, and antisexism play an important role in the Slavic region when it comes to influencing language and the use of language. Three additional papers concern Ukrainian-Russian mixed speech and textology of literary works in Russian.

The present volume contains a selection of papers presented at the Fifth International Symposium Russian Grammar: System–Usus–Language Variation, from September 22 to 24, 2021, at the University of Potsdam (Germany). The selected essays tackle the issues that arise when Russian Grammar meets new linguistic paradigms (such as corpus linguistics) and new challenges (such as heritage languages). The relevant findings are discussed with a particular focus on an updated version of the 1980 Academy grammar of Russian.

The second section focuses on applications of cultural linguistics in the field of foreign language teaching. By drawing on English as a Foreign Language and English as a Second Language contexts, the case studies presented further examine the ramification of cultural linguistics in the language classroom, enabling a better understanding of culture-specific conceptual differences between learners'first and target language(s).

The present volume is a collection of 14 papers written by several international scholars who examine a variety of descriptive and theoretical issues topical in current phonetic and phonological research. This is done through a meticulous analysis of a rich body of data, often obtained experimentally, taken from such languages as Gothic, Sanskrit, Old Chinese, Malaylam, Japanese, Polish, Hungarian, English and Portuguese as well as through theoretical considerations which carry broader implications for the study of sound systems.

This volume contributes to the fields of World Englishes, English Language Teaching and Second Language Acquisition, assessing the English(es) spoken in post-Independence Namibia beyond variety status. Based on questionnaires and corpus analysis, the author analyzes morphosyntactical structures, language use and attitudes towards English(es) in comparison to home languages. She gives new insights into the structure of spoken language and potential varieties of English in particular. Focus is put on a geographical area that only recently attracted increasing attention in the field of World Englishes. The author's work can be regarded as an attempt to bridge several aspects of the frequently discussed «paradigm gap» between World Englishes and Second Language Acquisition studies.

As cognitive scientists continue to probe into the nature of the human mind, it is increasingly clear that research into cognition cannot be dissociated from the context in which our mental activity occurs. The papers collected in this book testify to the growing interest in adopting a broad characterisation of what counts as relevant context. The vices of seeking essences behind complex phenomena should not go unnoticed, the primary, and possibly the most crucial, downside of this approach being a reductionist treatment of the human mind. With this book, the authors want to show that humans are not merely brains, minds, speakers, learners, readers, etc., but, first and foremost, complex beings who communicate within and beyond the contexts of their own cultures.
