In the last decade, the United States has seen a marked increase in nontraditional students, a diverse population of adult students who attend college while working, supporting families, or negotiating any number of circumstances that might delay the completion of their higher education goals. Studies have consistently shown that nontraditional students are more likely than traditional students to not complete their degree work or take longer to graduate for a variety of reasons, including outside responsibilities, difficulties adjusting to academic and campus environments, and new or different learning methodologies. Over the past fifteen years, librarians have increasingly looked to theory as a means to destabilize normative discourses and practices within LIS, to engage in inclusive and non-authoritarian pedagogies, and to organize for social justice. “Critlib,” short for “critical librarianship,” is variously used to refer to a growing body of scholarship, an intellectual or activist movement within librarianship, an online community that occasionally organizes in-person meetings, and an informal Twitter discussion space active since 2014, identified by the #critlib hashtag. Critlib “aims to engage in discussion about critical perspectives on library practice” but it also seeks to bring “social justice principles into our work in libraries” (http://critlib.org/about/). The role of theory within librarianship in general, and critical librarianship more specifically, has emerged as a site of tension within the profession. In spite of an avowedly activist and social justice-oriented agenda, critlib–as an online discussion space at least–has come under fire from some for being inaccessible, exclusionary, elitist, and disconnected from the practice of librarianship, empirical scholarship, and on-the-ground organizing for socioeconomic and political change. At the same time, critical librarianship may be becoming institutionalized, as seen in the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, the January 2015 editorial in College and Research Libraries that specifically solicited articles using critical theory or humanistic approaches, and the publication of several critical librarianship monographs by the Association of College and Research Libraries. This book features original research, reflective essays and conversations, and dialogues that consider the relationships between theory, practice, and critical librarianship through the lenses of the histories of librarianship and critical librarianship, intellectual and activist communities, professional practices, information literacy, library technologies, library education, specific theoretical approaches, and underexplored epistemologies and ways of knowing.

For the past decade, e-mail has been the preferred method of internal communication in libraries. However, relying on email for organizational knowledge management seems a bit like storing birth certificates, car titles, and deeds in a pile of junk mail: the important documents are lost amongst other items of only minimal or fleeting importance. A successful intranet can provide a secure place for information exchange and storage; however, in order to be successful, a library intranet must be easy to use, have the functionality desired by its users, and be integrated into the daily workflows of all library staff. Accomplishing this can be challenging for web librarians. The book covers, among other topics, third-party hosting; the use of freely available blog and wiki software for internal staff communication; and developing library intranets in ColdFusion, Microsoft SharePoint, and the open source Drupal content management system (CMS). More importantly, the authors examine in detail the human factors, which, when not thoroughly addressed, are more often the cause for a failed intranet than the technology platform. Diese Studie befasst sich mit der Funktionsweise, Implementierung und Evaluierung der Sacherschließungssoftware MindServer Categorizer der Firma Recommind an der Deutschen Zentralbibliothek für Wirtschaftswissenschaften. Grundlage der maschinellen Sacherschließung und anschließenden quantitativen und qualitativen Auswertung bilden rund 39.000 wirtschaftswissenschaftliche Dokumente aus den Datenbanken Econis und EconStor. Unter Zuhilfenahme des rund 6.000 Schlagwörter umfassenden Standard-Thesaurus Wirtschaft wird der ursprünglich rein statistische Indexierungsansatz des MindServer Categorizer zu einem begriffsorientierten Verfahren weiterentwickelt und zur Inhaltserschließung digitaler Informationsressourcen eingesetzt. Der zentrale Fokus dieser Studie liegt vor allem auf der Evaluierung der maschinell beschlagworteten Titel, in Anlehnung an die hierzu von Stock und Lancaster vorgeschlagenen Kriterien: Indexierungskonsistenz, -tiefe, -breite, -spezifität, -effektivität. Weiterhin wird die Belegungsbilanz des STW evaluiert und es erfolgt zusätzlich eine qualitative, stichprobenartige Bewertung der Ergebnisse seitens der zuständigen Fachreferenten und -referentinnen.
