The First World War was a truely global event that changed the course of history in many participating as well as non-participating countries. In East Asia, the war stimulated the further rise of Japan as the leading power in the region during the war, yet also its radicalization and social protests after 1918. In China and Korea it stimulated nationalist eruptions, demanding freedom and equality for the (semi)colonized countries and the people living within their borders. All in all, the present book offers a consice introduction of the history of the First World War and its impact in East Asia.

Wars create their own dynamics, especially with regard to images and language. The semiotic and semantic codes are redefined, according to the need to create an enemy image, or in reference to the results of a war that are post-event defined as just or reasonable. The semiotic systems of wars are central to the discussion of the contributions within this volume, which highlight the interrelationship of semiotic systems and their constructions during wars in different periods of history.

Die Schlacht um Gallipoli war Großbritanniens bitterste Niederlage des Ersten Weltkrieges. Dieser Band beschäftigt sich mit der Perspektivierung des Feldzugs. Zum einen sollen die Operationen innerhalb des Ersten Weltkrieges verortet werden, zum anderen beschrieben werden, welche Rolle die „Unvollendetheit'Gallipolis gegenwärtig im nationalen Gedächtnis der Nachfolgestaaten des Britischen Empire.

War is always related to many different aspects, e.g. religion, technology etc. However, one of the aspects of central importance for the history of warfare is geography. The present volume will analyze this interrelationship from several different perspectives.Geography is not only integral to the planning of tactics and strategies, but plays an important role in the outcome of war and its longterm aftermath. Furthermore, the interplay between war and geography is not purely a modern phenomenon but can be traced back through the ages of history. Geography always had the potential of providing an advantage or disadvantage. The aim of the volume is to grant historical perspectives on that special interrelationship in different time periods and regional settings. The purpose is to provide a deeper insight and an interdisciplinary discussion, which will open new perspectives on military history in general and the history of warfare in particular.

Die Seeschlacht von Tsushima brachte die Entscheidung im Russisch-Japanischen Krieg von 1904/05. Sie hatte einen prägenden Einfluss auf die Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Dieses Buch schildert nicht nur die Hintergründe und den Verlauf der Schlacht, sondern auch, wie die Ereignisse in Ostasien die Weltgeschichte mitbestimmten.

Pferde waren lange bedeutend für die Geschichte des Menschen und wurden zu wesentlich mehr als nur zur Freizeitgestaltung genutzt. Gerade die Geschichtswissenschaft hat die Rolle von Tieren für den Lauf der Ereignisse zu lange unterschätzt. Der vorliegende Band hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, im Besonderen die Bedeutung von Pferden für historische Entwicklungslinien und geschichtliche Prozesse etwas genauer zu untersuchen und einen möglichst chronologisch wie geographisch breit angelegten Überblick über die Bedeutung dieser Vierbeiner zu geben. Dafür werden nicht nur militärhistorische, sondern auch wirtschaftliche sowie kulturelle Aspekte untersucht, um dem interessierten Leser einen guten Einblick in die Geschichte der Pferde sowie deren Rolle für die Geschichte des Menschen zu gewährleisten.

This book challenges the premise that a ‘military revolution'prompted the major European powers to enter into an era of global hegemony during the early modern period, and suggests that this theory is not supported if we closely examine contemporary historical events. The conquests of Mexico and Peru, arguably the two most important colonial acquisitions by a European power during that era, were accomplished without the technology or tactics that are usually associated with the ‘military revolution'. On the other hand, Japan, Korea, some Indian states and the Ottoman Empire implemented military reforms, both tactical and technological, that are commonly associated with what was considered an exclusively Western approach to warfare. By comparing case studies of the Western and the non-Western world, Frank Jacob and Gilmar Visoni-Alonzo show that the concept of such a ‘military revolution'is a myth perpetuated by a Eurocentric perspective on history.
