Curtas-metragens feitos por diretoras brasileiras (1966-1985) Este livro analisa o cinema feito por mulheres a partir do levantamento e análise dos curta-metragens feitos por diretoras brasileiras na ditadura civil-militar. Como contribuição à historiografia do cinema brasileiro, é apresentado o levantamento de uma filmografia, que conta com 222 filmes feitos por 121 cineastas diferentes, além da análise fílmica de dez curtas. Ao longo do livro, as análises das obras e dos dados encontrados são entrelaçadas pelo contexto social e cinematográfico, relacionando, por exemplo, a circulação do pensamento feminista nos filmes e em jornais pertencentes à imprensa alternativa. A partir da análise comparada destes dois meios de comunicação, a autora investiga lacunas deixadas pela historiografia, como as relações entre o trabalho das cineastas e as pautas do movimento feminista de Segunda Onda, um aporte original deste livro. São examinados também os impactos da abertura das escolas de cinema no Brasil na produção das diretoras brasileiras no período, além de avanços e manutenções de desafios relativos ao acesso das mulheres ao fazer cinematográfico. Por fim, são apresentadas algumas iniciativas feministas desenvolvidas pelas cineastas, no contexto estudado, para pensar as desigualdades de gênero dentro do meio audiovisual e propor soluções. Percebendo a história como construção de mais um dos espaços de poder, faz-se aqui uma revisão crítica, resistência frente a um processo ativo de esquecimento das contribuições das mulheres para o cinema brasileiro. -------------------------------------------------- Neste estudo inovador, que contribui para a revisão da história do cinema brasileiro, Nayla Guerra coloca em primeiro plano aquilo que foi apagado da história: filmes de curta-metragem dirigidos por mulheres no período da ditadura civil-militar. O resultado da busca incansável e minuciosa em textos e acervos foi o mapeamento de mais de 200 curtas-metragens, a maioria desconhecidos, muitos danificados ou destruídos. Ao questionar se existe uma história das mulheres, Michelle Perrot sugere que a presença das mulheres na história foi frequentemente apagada por conta da falta de vestígios e de interesse público em guardar e preservar documentos que mostrassem como elas viviam, pensavam e sentiam os tempos em que viveram. Nayla vai em busca desses vestígios (em filmes, documentos, livros, textos jornalísticos) para traçar as trajetórias até então invisíveis de cineastas brasileiras. O método adotado na pesquisa consiste na busca de nomes de mulheres que realizaram filmes entre os anos de 1964 e 1985. Os nomes ganham rostos e histórias na medida em que novos dados são coletados e descobertas são realizadas. A partir do mapeamento e análise dos filmes, revelam-se trajetórias de resistência e de militância feminista. Com os filmes de baixo orçamento – que davam visibilidade às questões relativas ao contexto político, econômico e social da época –, as cineastas faziam um contraponto ao projeto moral da ditadura (família, valores heteronormativos e submissão das mulheres). Ao trazer essas realizadoras para o primeiro plano, o livro tece uma ponte entre o individual e o coletivo, o pessoal e o político e as histórias das mulheres no cinema e do curta-metragem no Brasil. Mulheres na luta armada: protagonismo feminino na ALN (Ação Libertadora Nacional), de Maria Cláudia Badan Ribeiro, chega preenchendo algumas lacunas importantes para o estudo e compreensão dos anos e atos de resistência à ditadura de 1964. Marked by significant efforts toward the democratization of Brazil's highly unequal society, this period also witnessed the documentary's rise to unprecedented vitality in quantity, quality, and diversity of production-which includes polished auteur films as well as rough-hewn collaborative works, films made in major metropolitan regions as well as in indigenous villages and in remote parts of the Amazon, intimate first-person documentaries as well as films that dive headfirst into struggles for social justice. The transformations of Brazilian society and of filmmaking coalesce and become entangled in this cinema's preoccupation with archives. Historically linked to the exercise and maintenance of power, the concept of the archive is critical for the documentary as a cultural practice that preserves images from the present for the future, unearths and repurposes visual materials from the past, and is historically invested in filmic images as records of the real. Contemporary films incorporate, reflect on, and rework a variety of archives, such as documents produced by official institutions, ethnographic images, home movies, and photo albums-and engage not only with what is preserved but also with lacunas in the record and with alternate forms of remembering, retrieving, and transmitting the past. Through its interaction with archives, this book argues, the contemporary documentary reflects on and intervenes in the distribution of visibilities and invisibilities, centers and margins, silences and speech, living memory and its preservation in the record-thus locating the documentary on archival borders that concern Brazilian society and filmmaking alike.

The massacre of Canudos In 1897 is a pivotal episode in Brazilian social history. Looking at the event through the eyes of the inhabitants, Levine challenges traditional interpretations and gives weight to the fact that most of the Canudenses were of mixed-raced descent and were thus perceived as opponents to progress and civilization.In 1897 Brazilian military forces destroyed the millenarian settlement of Canudos, murdering as many as 35,000 pious rural folk who had taken refuge in the remote northeast backlands of Brazil. Fictionalized in Mario Vargas Llosa's acclaimed novel, War at the End of the World, Canudos is a pivotal episode in Brazilian social history. When looked at through the eyes of the inhabitants of Canudos, however, this historical incident lends itself to a bold new interpretation which challenges the traditional polemics on the subject. While the Canudos movement has been consistently viewed either as a rebellion of crazed fanatics or as a model of proletarian resistance to oppression, Levine deftly demonstrates that it was, in fact, neither.Vale of Tears probes the reasons for the Brazilian ambivalence toward its social history, giving much weight to the fact that most of the Canudenses were of mixed-race descent.
