«La parresia è un'attività verbale in cui un parlante esprime la propria relazione personale con la verità, e rischia la propria vita perché riconosce che dire la verità è un dovere per aiutare altre persone (o se stesso) a vivere meglio. Nella parresia il parlante fa uso della sua libertà, e sceglie il parlar franco invece della persuasione, la verità invece della falsità o del silenzio, il rischio di morire invece della vita e della sicurezza, la critica invece dell'adulazione, e il dovere morale invece del proprio tornaconto o dell'apatia morale». Michel Foucault Chi è colui che può «dire la verità»? E quali rischi corre? Quanto gli può costare il suo «parlar chiaro»? E ancora: qual è il rapporto tra la verità e il potere? Deve coincidere, il dire la verità, con l'esercizio del potere, o deve essere un'attività del tutto indipendente e separata? Verso la fine del V secolo a.C., nella Grecia classica, la verità comincia ad essere percepita come un problema. Anzi, secondo Foucault, la problematizzazione della verità è l'elemento che caratterizza la fine della filosofia presocratica e l'inizio della filosofia così come ancora oggi noi la conosciamo. L'obiettivo dichiarato di queste lezioni, tenute a Berkeley nel 1983, è appunto quello di ricostruire, attraverso la problematizzazione del concetto di verità, «una genealogia dell'atteggiamento critico nella filosofia occidentale». Il metodo seguito è quello, rigoroso e affascinante, dell'analisi filologica. Protagonista di questo magistrale seminario foucaultiano è infatti una parola, il termine parresia, che connota, nella lingua greca, l'attività di colui che dice la verità. Seguendone il percorso nelle tragedie di Euripide, nei testi «socratici» di Platone, e poi in quelli di Aristotele e Plutarco, Epitteto e Galeno, Foucault restituisce a pieno le tensioni etiche della società greca, e insieme propone la questione centrale del suo metodo di indagine: vi sono momenti, nella storia del pensiero, in cui certe realtà – la verità, la criminalità, la follia, il sesso – diventano «un problema»; è su questi momenti che conviene addensare l'attenzione, è lì che bisogna indagare. In questa edizione le lezioni di Berkeley sono accompagnate in appendice dal testo integrale della conferenza tenuta da Foucault all'Università di Grenoble nel maggio del 1982, in cui si possono rintracciare in forma embrionale i filoni di ricerca che svilupperà nel corso del suo lavoro sulla parresia.

For it is my hope that such clues may prove helpful in freeing us from the more severe strictures of the traditional interpretive dogmas.

'Understanding Empiricism'is an introduction to empiricism and the empiricist tradition in philosophy. The book presents empiricism as a philosophical outlook that unites several philosophers and discusses the most important philosophical issues bearing on the subject, while maintaining enough distance from, say, the intricacies of Locke, Berkeley, Hume scholarship to allow students to gain a clear overview of empiricism without being lost in the details of the exegetical disputes surrounding particular philosophers. Written for students the book can serve both as an introduction to current problems in the theory of knowledge as well as a comprehensive survey of the history of empiricist ideas. The book begins by distinguishing between the epistemological and psychological/causal versions of empiricism, showing that it is the former that is of primary interest to philosophers. The next three chapters, on Locke, Berkeley, Hume respectively, provide an introduction to the main protagonists in the British empiricist tradition from this perspective. The book then examines more contemporary material including the ideas of Sellars, foundations and coherence theories, the rejection of the a priori by Mill, Peirce and Quine, scepticism and, finally, the status of religious belief within empiricism. In 1918 Lucile Berkeley Buchanan Jones received her bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado, becoming its first female African American graduate (though she was not allowed to'walk'at graduation, nor is she pictured in the 1918 CU yearbook). In Remembering Lucile, author Polly McLean depicts the rise of the African American middle class through the historical journey of Lucile and her family from slavery in northern Virginia to life in the American West, using their personal story as a lens through which to examine the greater experience of middle-class Blacks in the early twentieth century. For many, the word'pleasure'conjures associations with hedonism, indulgence, and escape from the life of the mind. However little we talk about it, though, pleasure also plays an integral role in cognitive life, in both our sensory perception of the world and our intellectual understanding. This previously important but now neglected philosophical understanding of pleasure is the focus of the essays in this volume, which challenges received views that pleasure is principally motivating of action, unanalyzable, and caused, rather than responsive to reason. Like other books in the Oxford Philosophical Concepts series, it traces the development of the focal idea from ancient times through the 20th century. The essays highlight points of departure for new lines of inquiry rather than attempting to provide a full picture of how the idea of pleasure has been explored in philosophy. The volume begins by showing how Plato, Aristotle, early Islamic philosophers, and philosophers in the Medieval Latin tradition, such as Aquinas, honed in on the challenge of unifying the variety of pleasures so that they fall under one concept. In the early modern period, philosophers shifted from understanding the logic of pleasure to treating pleasure as a mental state. As the studies of Malebranche, Berkeley and Kant show, the central problem becomes understanding the relation of pleasure to other sensory experiences, and the role of pleasure in human cognition and knowledge. Short interdisciplinary reflections interspersed between essays focus on art of 16th and 17th century textbooks and the difficult music of composers like Bach, which demonstrate translation of these concerns to cultural production in the period. As the essay on Mill shows, the 19th century development of scientific psychology narrowed the definition of pleasure, and so its philosophical focus. Two chapters contain analyses of samples from federal manuscript census schedules of 1900 and 1910, describing demographics, intermarriage patterns, and education The study also links African American and European American immigration to race relations in Creek and Cherokee history between 1880 and 1920, consulting many sources that have not been used before. The comparison between the neighboring Cherokees and Creeks in the Indian Territory shows different approaches to similar problems, documenting culture change that affected the two societies. The census figures at the beginning of the century are analyzed in terms of four population segments: black Indians, including freedmen, and post-1880 black immigrants, so-called fullbloods, and (white-Indian) mixed-bloods. The study shows how these categories became metaphors for political and social outlooks and attitudes about race and native Americans. The book ends with a detailed, comprehensive bibliography containing primary and secondary sources with guides to their locations. Deve coincidere, il dire la verità, con l'esercizio del potere, o deve essere un'attività del tutto indipendente e separata? Verso la fine del V secolo a.C., nella Grecia classica, la verità comincia ad essere percepita come un problema. Anzi, secondo Foucault, la problematizzazione della verità è l'elemento che caratterizza la fine della filosofia presocratica e l'inizio della filosofia così come ancora oggi noi la conosciamo. L'obiettivo dichiarato di queste Lezioni – tenute a Berkeley nel 1983 – è appunto quello di ricostruire, attraverso la problematizzazione del concetto di verità, «una genealogia dell'atteggiamento critico nella filosofia occidentale». Il metodo seguito è quello, rigoroso e affascinante, dell'analisi filologica. Protagonista di questo magistrale seminario foucaultiano è infatti una parola, il termine «parresìa», che connota, nella lingua greca, l'attività di colui che dice la verità. Seguendone il percorso nelle tragedie di Euripide, nei testi «socratici» di Platone, e via via in quelli di Aristotele e Plutarco, Epitteto e Galeno, Foucault restituisce a pieno le tensioni etiche della società greca, e insieme propone la questione centrale del suo metodo di indagine: vi sono momenti, nella storia del pensiero, in cui certe realtà – la verità, la criminalità, la follia, il sesso – diventano «un problema»; è su questi momenti che conviene addensare l'attenzione, è lì che bisogna indagare.

David Hume (7 May 1711– 25 August 1776) was a Scottish philosopher, historian, economist, and essayist, known especially for his philosophical empiricism and skepticism. He is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy and the Scottish Enlightenment. Hume is often grouped with John Locke, George Berkeley, and a handful of others as a British Empiricist. Beginning with his A Treatise of Human Nature (1739), Hume strove to create a total naturalistic'science of man'that examined the psychological basis of human nature. In stark opposition to the rationalists who preceded him, most notably Descartes, he concluded that desire rather than reason governed human behaviour, saying:'Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions.'A prominent figure in the skeptical philosophical tradition and a strong empiricist, he argued against the existence of innate ideas, concluding instead that humans have knowledge only of things they directly experience. Thus he divides perceptions between strong and lively'impressions'or direct sensations and fainter'ideas,'which are copied from impressions. He developed the position that mental behaviour is governed by'custom'; our use of induction, for example, is justified only by our idea of the'constant conjunction'of causes and effects. Hume held notoriously ambiguous views of Christianity, but he famously challenged the argument from design in his Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (1779).

Some might ask'Why Locke's theory of knowledge now?'Though appreciated for his social philosophy, Locke has been criticized for his work in the field of epistemology ever since the publication of the Essay. It is even as if Locke serves only as an example of how not to think. When people criticize Locke, they usually cite the hostile commen­ taries of Berkeley, Kant, Husserl, or Sellars. But, one might ask, are they not all so eager to show the excellence of their own epistemo­ logical views that they distort and underestimate Locke's thought? Russell aptly noted in his History of Western Philosophy that: No one has yet succeeded in inventing a philosophy at once credible and self-consis­ tent. Locke aimed at credibility, and achieved it at the expense of consistency. Most of the great philosophers have done the opposite. A philosophy which is not self-consis­ tent cannot be wholly true, but a philosophy which is self-consistent can very well be wholly false. The most fruitful philosophies have contained glaring inconsistencies, but for that very reason have been partially true. There is no reason to suppose that a self­ consistent system contains more truth than one which, like Locke's, is obviously more or less wrong. (B. This is a study of the Military Government of Cuba from 1898 to 1902. Tracing and explaining the actions of General Leonard Wood's adminis­ tration during those years reveals how the United States Government re­ solved the questions of independence, strategic security, and economic inter­ ests in regard to Cuba. Leonard Wood, Secretary of War Elihu Root, Senator Orville H. Platt, and President William McKinley formulated and carried out policies that had a strong influence on subsequent Cuban-American relations. The broader aspects of this study, civil-military relations and American imperialism, are topics of importance to all citizens today. This is institutional and biographical history, written in the belief that a full ac­ count of the men, action, and circumstances will add to our understanding of the period when the United States emerged as a world power. Reich Monongah: The Tragic Story of the 1907 Monongah Mine Disaster documents the events and conditions that led to the worst industrial accident in the history of the United States. This mining accident claimed hundreds of lives on the morning of December 6, 1907 and McAteer, an expert on mine and workplace health and safety, delves deeply into the economic forces and social-political landscape of the mining communities of north central West Virginia to expose the truth behind this tragedy. After nearly thirty years of exhaustive research, McAteer determines that close to 500 men and boys—many of them immigrants—lost their lives that day, leaving hundreds of women widowed and more than one thousand children orphaned.
